While Manchester City has pretty much killed the excitement in the Premier League - thanks to their astronomical winning streak, all eyes are now on the January transfer window where other clubs will be looking to bolster their squads with some of the biggest footballers in the fray.

The January transfer window will open on Monday, but Liverpool has already dropped a bomb after their sensational move saw the Reds securing the services of Southampton's Virgil van Dijk. The Anfield club splurged a staggering 75 million pounds ($100 million) to bring the Dutchman to Anfield and, in the process, made him the world's most expensive defender.

Van Dijk has been linked with a move to Liverpool for several months and the Reds were even forced to issue an apology following an alleged illegal approach for the Netherlands centre-back earlier this year. However, Jurgen Klopp's determination to sign Van Dijk finally came through with a world record fee for a defender.

On Wednesday, Southampton announced that they have accepted the record fee for the move that will go through as soon as the transfer window opens on the 1st of January. Amid all the hullabaloo, Van Dijk took to Twitter and confirmed his move to Andfield.

"Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player," Van Dijk wrote on Twitter, alongside a photo of him with a Liverpool shirt. "Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football.

"I can't wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come," he added.

The 26-year-old has agreed a contract that will see him earn 180,000-pounds-a-week after setting his heart on a move to Liverpool ahead of City who were also interested in the defender. The previous world record fee for a defender was the 54 million pounds Manchester City paid Tottenham Hotspur for England right-back Kyle Walker in July this year.

A fee of 75 million pounds would also be level with Romelu Lukaku as the second most expensive transfer in Premier League history, only behind Manchester United's 90-million-pound purchase of Frenchman Paul Pogba.

Earlier in the summer window, the Brazilian Neymar became the world's most expensive player after his 200-million-pound move to Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona. Months later, Barcelona made Ousmane Dembele the second most expensive player of all time by shelling 96.8 million pounds for the Borussia Dortmund winger.
