At Microsoft’s annual event in Mumbai, dubbed ‘Future Decoded’, the company showed off their cloud and mobile technologies that are being the fundamental reason behind India’s transformation in the digital age. From large, medium and small enterprises, Microsoft has been working hand in hand with the likes of Flipkart, State Bank of India, Tata Motors and other companies as they utilise Microsoft’s cloud and mobile technologies.

At the conference, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addressed the company’s future and also announced their latest offering, Skype Lite which has been exclusively developed for the Indian mobile market. Skype Lite allows communication and collaboration over low-bandwidth networks and will bring Aadhaar integration to the app by June 2017.

Skype Lite Announced for India© Skype

The Skype Lite app is exclusively available on the Play Store and is targetted for handsets that fall in the mid to low range budget categories. The app was developed in India at the research and development centre in Hyderabad, and Microsoft is currently only looking to offer the app in the Indian market.

The strategic move was explained by Eugene Ho, Director of Product Management at Skype that even though Skype has millions of users in India, a majority of these users have access to the Internet only via mobile phones. Most of these handsets are lower-end phones due to which this app was developed. He said, “Although there has been a high-speed 4G rollout in India, you will still frequently find the speeds dropping to 3G or even 2G levels as you're out and about, and these are still used in a wide part of India. That's why we created Skype Lite."

Features

The Skype Lite app is under 13 MB and is now available on Android exclusively. Some of the features of Skype Lite include instant messaging, Skype’s Bots and audio/video calling. The app is programmed to automatically switch to high-quality calls when connected to high-speed internet however, if a user is faced with a low-speed connection, the call quality will automatically adjust to a lower compressed audio/video call.

Much like their competitor WhatsApp, Skype Lite will also compress images when shared via chat, in turn using less data and can be forwarded to other users without having to download and upload the image again. The app also has an inbuilt data tracker, which gives you details as to how much data you have been using or saving by using Skype Lite.

Aadhaar Integration

Microsoft has also integrated Aadhaar as a means to verify a user. While in a call, one can send a request to the person in a call to fill in their Aadhaar details for verification. Along with the Aadhaar number, the verification request will also send an OTP on the phone number linked to the Aadhaar card.
