NDA Cadet Runs With Injured Junior On Back & Proves That Army 'Leaves No Man Behind'

It's not every day that we hear such inspiring stories, where people go to extreme lengths or do every possible thing to help someone. So, when we come across such a story, how can we let it pass just like that? In fact, these stories and the people both command our respect for their exemplary actions.

One such story is of Chirag Arora, a sixth-term cadet of the National Defence Academy (NDA), whose commendable team spirit has earned him respect from the academy and a Ray-Ban aviator from a top army general. Lieutenant General Alok Kler, a strike corps commander was so impressed with Chirag's team spirit and camaraderie, he flew from Ambala to NDA Pune to give a pat to the cadet and as a gesture gave his Ray-Ban to him.

Every 6 months, a cross-country race among cadets is organized by NDA in Khadakwasla, Pune. This time too, a 12.5 km inter-squadron cross-country race was organized for every cadet from all the 18 squadrons to take part in, except the first term cadets.

In fact, the race is tougher than any other race, since it is without half time, timesouts or substitutions and the cadets also have to run over undulating terrains. There are no points for guessing that the one who finishes the race earns more points for his squadron.

But for Chirag, helping his junior, Devesh Joshi was more important than finishing first. And he did exactly that by carrying his injured junior on his back, just so he does not lose out on points. Chirag saw Devesh was on the verge of collapsing, so he put him on his back and ran for half a kilometer to finish the race in 55 minutes. It might look like a small gesture, but it definitely speaks volumes about Chirag's soldierly spirit.

Both Chirag and Devesh are from the same squadron, Echo Squadron. While Chirag is in the sixth-term, Devesh is in the fourth term. The Echo Squadron holds the record for the longest unbroken possession of the Glider Trophy, so clearly the pressure was high on Chirag. But, that did not deter him from doing what was right – helping his injured cadet and in the process proves as the truest example of 'leave no man behind'.

An NDA officer told the Times of India, “Chirag didn't let his squadron cadet lose out on the points. He ensured that they crossed the finish line together.”

Major Surenndra Poonia, a former Special Forces officer of the Indian Army, took to Twitter to share this incredible story.

The officer further added, “Both cadets are from Echo Squadron. Final term army cadet Chirag Arora, who is also quarter master sergeant of the squadron, saw his junior Devesh Joshi in a precarious condition and on the verge of collapse. Arora put Joshi on his back and carried him for half a km to finish the race in 55 minutes.”

Hats off to this camaraderie and Chirag's team spirit!
