Vivo's New Concept Phone Has The Thinnest Possible Bezels And A Pop-Up Selfie Camera

As Mobile World Congress is starting to ramp up, a small trend has started to pop up. The concept phone is called Apex FullView, and its headline feature is what Vivo describes as “Half-Screen In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology.” The idea here is that instead of placing your finger on a thumbnail-sized icon to unlock the phone, you'll be able to do so in a much larger area of the display.

The technology basically means a large part of the screen is converted into a fingerprint scanner. Almost 30-35 percent of the screen is converted into a fingerprint sensor, making it easy for everyone to unlock the phone quickly. Companies have made a lot of compromises when it comes to a fingerprint scanner, Samsung kept it at a very awkward place in the S8 while Apple completely skipped it in the iPhone X to maintain aesthetics. This new technology can simply overcome this challenge and make everyone's life a lot easier.

It features the world's highest screen-to-body ratio, as well as a revamped take on the in-screen fingerprint sensor Vivo showed off earlier in the year. The top / left / right bezels measure just 1.8mm, and the bottom bezel comes in at just 4.3mm -- all industry bests by far.

The iPhone X's screen-to-body ratio is 82%. Xiaomi's Mi Mix 2 comes in at 83%. The Vivo Apex? 95%. Even though the iPhone X, Essential Phone, or even the trendsetting Xiaomi Mi Mix have been called "bezel-less," they are not quite really that. The Mi Mix and its sequel have sizable bottom bezels. The Essential Phone and the iPhone X each have a noticeable notch that cuts into the display at the top.

This is exactly why the Vivo Apex Concept has us even more excited. Vivo has given the Apex a hidden front-firing camera that pops up when needed from the top.  According to Vivo, the camera can slide out and is ready to snap a photo in less than a second. When it does pop out, it protrudes out of the top like a wide popped stylus. Otherwise, it's a normal 8-megapixel camera.

Although Vivo has incorporated all these technologies into a concept phone, the company hasn't made any announcement on whether the phone will be commercially produced.
