Wonder Woman: How DC Destroyed Everything Marvel Worked So Hard To Build With Just One Movie

If you haven’t watched Wonder Woman yet, go watch it. Right now!

This movie is easily one of the best hits of this summer. In fact, it looks on track to be the blockbuster of the summer. It more or less recovered its entire budget on the opening weekend itself and doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

While Marvel mastered the box office formula a few years ago, DC has been struggling to get positive reactions from their audiences. But, all that has changed with ‘Wonder Woman’. Don’t take our word for it; Rotten Tomatoes rates it at 93%.

Just had my world rocked by @PattyJenks and @GalGadot. Sobbing in the cinema. I'm now living a post- #WonderWoman life. #GameChanger pic.twitter.com/5zg9qMt0VY

Will it make more money than ‘Avengers’? We don’t think so. Will it make more money than the ‘Dark Knight’ franchise? A solid no there. But it did two things.

One, it cements ‘Wonder Woman’ as a bad ass with a well-developed back story and awesome super powers that enable her to go toe to toe with the likes of ‘Doomsday’. She even beat the entire Justice League single-handedly one time. More about that here:

Two, it gives DC one thing that Marvel doesn’t yet have and will most probably never have—a strong female character. Yes, Gal Gadot’s performance as Wonder Woman is probably the best iteration of the Amazon in any form of media till date.

What are the positives to take away from this film?

Excellent Casting

Gal Gadot fits the role of Wonder Woman perfectly. Many were sceptical about whether she would be able to fill the boots of heavyweight Lynda Carter who is the most recognizable Wonder Woman till date. But she pulled it off.

Chris Pine was another perfect choice as Steve Trevor. He managed to make us care about the secondary character he was playing and also did something no other Marvel or DC movie before managed to do, he brought a tear to our eyes. Kudos.

Female Badass

There’s Ironman, Batman, Superman, Captain America, Thor, Spiderman, Hulk, etc. the list goes on. What’s missing? A woman.

No words can describe how powerful @WonderWomanFilm was. So well thought with such an amazing message. @PattyJenks @GalGadot #WonderWoman pic.twitter.com/xJLCqj2PVI

Marvel is banking on Captain Marvel pulling in the numbers for them in this demographic. But no one knows Carol Danvers. Everybody knows Wonder Woman. And now that Gal Gadot has nailed the role, everyone will even know Diana Prince.

Sense Of Humour

Many complained that the DCEU lacked the sense of humour of Marvel. Yes, there were a few jokes in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, but this movie was probably just as funny as any of the solo Ironman movies. Let’s hope the trend continues.

Realism

While Marvel may use real life locations, it has kept away from addressing issues like civilian casualties when super powered individuals collide. DC doesn’t do this.

There is death and destruction all around. In ‘Wonder Woman’, it’s in your face. Also, not everyone can be saved. Yes, Marvel tried with ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and we all know how that turned out.

Villains

There’s no denying that Marvel has some awesome villains of their own. But they’ve been unsuccessful in bringing them to the big screen for some reason. Loki is the only one worth remembering to be honest. They even fucked up a character like Ultron. Yes, it’s all building up to Thanos, but that’s still months away.

On the other hand, DC has given us epic villain after epic villain. ‘Man of Steel’ had Zod. ‘Batman v Superman’ had Lex Luthor (No, Doomsday was not the villain of that story), and ‘Wonder Woman’ has somebody who is way more interesting, powerful, and has much better motives than Dr. Isabel Maru (Dr. Poison). We won’t reveal who, watch the movie if you want to find out!

This is the best gift of #WonderWoman I love u @GalGadotpic.twitter.com/ahgpKB4SPF

We expect a lot from the DCEU in the near future. Next up, Justice League!
