  2. Dairy group Lactalis' logo is seen at the food exhibition Sial in Villepinte, near Paris, France, October 17, 2016. REUTERS/Charles Platiau/Files PARIS: French prosecutors have opened a probe into salmonella contamination and a major international recall of baby milk produced by dairy giant Lactalis, a legal source told AFP on Tuesday. The investigation will focus on possible charges of causing involuntary injuries and endangering the lives of others but also possible cheating and failures in carrying out a product recall, the source said. Reports of some 20 children falling sick after consuming Lactalis powdered milk ? sold under several different brand names in France and abroad, including Picot and Milumel ? first emerged in early December. The company, one of the world's largest producers of dairy products, ordered a first major recall on December 10 of nearly 7,000 tonnes of packets produced by a contaminated factory in Craon, northwest France. At the time, it said it did not know how much of the potentially dangerous powder had been consumed or was in shops around the world and it announced a second, wider recall on December 21. The group has now recalled all of its production from the Craon factory since February 15, blaming the contamination on renovation work carried out earlier this year. Lactalis could not be reached for comment on Tuesday. The product withdrawals have affected consumers in countries as far afield as China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Britain and Sudan, underlining the company's global reach and the difficulty in tracing all the potentially at-risk powder. The scare prompted Dutch value-for-money retailer Kruidvat to pull some of its own-brand infant milk off the shelves as a precaution because of the salmonella contamination at the Craon site, which produces one of the Dutch product's ingredients. Salmonella symptoms include severe diarrhoea, stomach cramps and vomiting. The illness ? caused by intestinal bacteria from farm animals ? is especially dangerous for the very young and elderly because it can cause severe dehydration. The baby milk industry was shaken by a huge scare in China in 2008 when local manufacturers were found to be bulking their product with an industrial chemical. Six babies died and around 300,000 others were made ill. The scare in the vast and growing Chinese market benefited rival companies such as Lactalis and fellow French giant Danone, which were more expensive but were seen by consumers as safe and high quality. 16 babies hospitalised A total of 35 infants have fallen sick with salmonella poisoning in France since August including 16 who were hospitalised, an unusually high number that sparked fears of an epidemic. Of these, 31 were found to have consumed Lactalis products from its factory in Craon, which was shut down on December 8 for a major cleaning. The company believes the salmonella outbreak can be traced to an evaporation tower used to dry out the milk at the factory it acquired in 2006. The plant had suffered salmonella contamination the previous year. Quentin Guillemain, the father of a three-month-old baby who drank the milk but did not fall ill, has filed a complaint against Lactalis and the UFC Que Choisir consumer association announced plans to do so. Guillemain has set up a support group for the families of infants sickened by the milk. The legal probe was opened by prosecutors in Paris specialised in public health issues.

  5. Baby survives after being born with heart outside her body. Photo: The Guardian A baby girl, Vanellope Hope Wilkins, survived being born with her heart outside her body, in a first of its kind case reported in Britain, according to The Guardian. The doctors revealed to Wilkins? parents that she was suffering from ectopia cordis, in which heart and stomach grow externally, during a nine-week scan. The parents, identified as 31-year-old Naomi Findlay, and 43-year-old Dean Wilkins, were told that ?termination? was the only option. Three weeks after her premature birth, Vanellope has survived three operations to move her heart inside her chest. The operations occurred at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester. The couple shared that first 10 minutes of Vanellope?s birth were crucial as they would determine her ability to breathe. ?But when she came out and she came out crying, that was it. The relief fell out of me,? said her mother. Her father said: ?Twenty minutes went by and she was still shouting her head off ? it made us so joyful and teary.? About five in eight million babies are born with this condition with a less than 10% chance of survival. Branko Mimic, the lead surgeon at the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre, said: ?Cases such as Vanellope?s, where everything else appears essentially normal, are even rarer, and whilst it would seem more hopeful she will do well, it is therefore almost impossible to be confident of this.?

  12. CCTV grab of a suspected blackmailer in a supermarket in Friedrichshafen, south-west Germany. FRANKFURT: German police announced Saturday the arrest of a 53-year-old man "strongly suspected" of poisoning baby food and threatening to contaminate other products in stores nationwide and across Europe. The man was detained by officers near Tubingen, south of Stuttgart, following information received from the public, police and prosecutors said in a joint statement. At a press conference, they said that the man had refused to shed light on his motives but that evidence implicating him was discovered at his home. It also appears that he acted alone. Local deputy chief of police Uwe Stuermer described the man as "eccentric" and mentally disturbed. On Thursday police alerted the public to the risk of food being poisoned, saying a blackmailer was demanding millions of euros in cash. Authorities released surveillance footage of the suspect, whom they earlier described as aged 55, wearing glasses and a white cap, which ultimately led to the arrest. To press the demand, the blackmailer had poisoned five baby food products and last week alerted police to the store they were placed in, in the southern city of Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance. The food ? which had been laced with ethylene glycol, a chemical found in anti-freeze and brake fluid ? was found and removed. But it prompted the nationwide appeal for information on the suspect and a warning about the potential of other contaminated food, which authorities repeated Saturday. Through the video surveillance of the stores where the baby jars were identified, police were able to obtain images clearly showing the face of the 55-year-old man, who has not been named.
  13. LOS ANGELES: Kim Kardashian has confirmed reports that she and husband Kanye West are having a third baby, with the couple expected to use a surrogate for the birth. Kardashian?s confirmation, in a trailer released on Thursday for the new series of reality show ?Keeping Up With the Kardashians,? means that three of the Kardashian siblings are expecting children around the same time. Multiple media reports in the past week have said that Khloe Kardashian, 33, and Kylie Jenner, at 20 the youngest member of the celebrity family, are pregnant for the first time. The women and their representatives have neither confirmed nor denied the reports. Kim Kardashian and West were rumored in June to have hired a surrogate because of serious health complications with Kardashian?s first two pregnancies and the birth of children North, 4, and one-year-old Saint. In Thursday?s trailer, Kim is seen telling her sister Khloe her good news on the phone. ?What happens every time I say, ?Guess what?'? ?The person?s pregnant?? Khloe responds. ?We?re having a baby!,? Kim announces. The reality star has given detailed accounts on her blog about the difficulties she experienced during her two labors, and has spoken about considering surrogacy for future children with West. ?Keeping Up With the Kardashians? returns for a 14th season on Sunday on the E! television network. Thursday?s trailer did not address the reported pregnancies of Khloe and Kylie.
  14. Kim Kardashian, North West and Kanye West attend the Alexander Wang Fashion Show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2015 at Pier 94 on February 14, 2015 in New York City. Photo: AFP 2 Reality television star Kim Kardashian is expecting a third child with rapper Kanye West via a surrogate, US media reported on Wednesday. "The entire family is over the moon. Kim had been looking for a surrogate for months until recently when she found the perfect candidate," an unnamed source was quoted as telling People magazine. "Given her health scares in the past, Kim felt the need to hire a surrogacy agency that helped serve as the liaison in finding a healthy woman who would be a great surrogate option for her and Kanye." Kardashian, 36, and West, 40, were married in 2014 and have a son, Saint, who is 21 months old and a four-year-old daughter, North. Celebrity gossip portal TMZ said their third child was due at the end of January. US media have been speculating for several months that the celebrity couple may have hired a surrogate. Kim Kardashian attends the 2017 Forbes Women's Summit June 13, 2017 in New York. Photo: AFP Kardashian has never confirmed this although she has wondered aloud about investigating the possibility on her E! cable reality show "Keeping Up with the Kardashians." She has blogged about having placenta accreta, a condition that can cause complications during pregnancy in which all or part of the placenta attaches to the womb. "My doctor had to stick his entire arm in me and detach the placenta with his hand, scraping it away from my uterus with his fingernails. How disgusting and painful," Kardashian said on her blog, recalling North's birth. "My mom was crying; she had never seen anything like this before. My delivery was fairly easy, but then going through that -- it was the most painful experience of my life!" Kardashian's representatives refused to comment.
  15. Serena Williams MIAMI: Tennis superstar Serena Williams gave birth to a baby girl on Friday, US media reported, prompting an outpouring of delight from fellow professionals, celebrities and fans of the sporting icon. Williams, who will turn 36 later this month, was admitted to the St Mary´s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida on Wednesday before going into labor overnight. There was no immediate confirmation of the birth from Williams´ representatives. Elder sister Venus Williams described herself as "super excited" after being informed of the reports concerning the baby as she walked on to the court for her third-round match at the US Open in New York. However she declined to take questions on the subject in her post-match press conference. "I´m definitely available to answer questions about tennis. That´s all right now," Venus told reporters. Earlier, a producer with the Florida-based WPBF television station cited hospital sources as saying Williams´ daughter weighed in at six pounds and 13 ounces (3.09 kilograms). Celebrity magazine US Weekly cited an unnamed source close to the tennis star confirming the birth. Williams, who is engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, was swiftly greeted with an avalanche of congratulations from well-wishers. "Congrats Serena!!! So much joy for you!!!" Spanish star Rafa Nadal wrote on Twitter. Pop diva Beyonce took to Instagram to send her message, posting a portrait of a pregnant Williams in a flowing white gown with the message: "Congratulations Serena!" Williams´ coach Patrick Mouratoglou added on Twitter: "Congratulations @SerenaWilliams for your baby girl. I am so happy for you and I feel your emotion. Recover well & enjoy without limitation." US tennis legend Chris Evert meanwhile chimed: "I´m so thrilled for her. And what a role model she´s going to be for her daughter." Media reports said 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena -- who revealed she was pregnant in April -- was induced overnight Thursday. Other fans meanwhile wasted no time in anointing the tennis star´s daughter as a future champion. "Hello to the future queen of tennis," one post on Twitter read. "A future champion is born," added another. Those sentiments sparked light-hearted alarm for Spanish star Garbine Muguruza. Told that Williams´ baby is a girl, Muguruza replied: "Well, I hope she doesn´t play tennis." ´Outrageous´ goal Williams has vowed to return to competitive tennis in January to defend her Australian Open title, which she won while newly pregnant. Williams last month told Vogue in a wide-ranging interview that she had set herself a goal of returning to play in Melbourne at next year´s Open. Williams is engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian "It´s the most outrageous plan," she said. "I just want to put that out there. That´s, like, three months after I give birth. I´m not walking anything back, but I´m just saying it´s pretty intense." Williams´ coach Mouratoglou meanwhile joked Friday that he expected to hold the tennis star to her word. "Btw @serenawilliams I wish you a speedy recovery... we have a lot of work ahead of us," Mouratoglou wrote in a Twitter post. Williams also revealed in her Vogue interview she had long suspected she would give birth to a girl. "Two weeks after we found out (about the pregnancy), I played the Australian Open. I told Alexis it has to be a girl because there I was playing in 100-degree weather, and that baby never gave me any trouble. Ride or die. Women are tough that way," Williams told the magazine. A separate article in Vanity Fair in June said Williams, who unveiled her pregnant body in a nude cover photo for the magazine, planned to tie the knot with Ohanian later this year after the birth. The couple announced their engagement in December after meeting in 2015 in Rome.
  16. Representational image/Reuters file photo ISLAMABAD: A team of doctors at Noida (India) gave a new lease of life to a three-year-old Pakistani child, who was suffering from a rare heart disease, found in one among 200,000 children. According to a health news channel, Mohammad Bilal was suffering from Uhl's anomaly, a disease related to the right ventricle of the heart. The muscles on the right chamber of his heart were weak and enlarged, which increased pressure on his heart's left chamber. "As a result, the child's heart was not functioning properly and the pumped blood was unable to reach his lungs, resulting in high risk to his life," doctors said in statement on Friday. Bilal was treated with the Fontan procedure and right ventricle exclusion from circulation method, a critical surgical procedure that took about five hours. "Under this procedure, the entire blue blood of the child's body was pumped directly into his lungs through a tube and the right chamber of the heart is removed," the doctors said. "Due to the prolonged illness, the child had become very weak; hence, he was kept on ventilator for four days post surgery? they added. The doctors further said that the child was also given medicines so that his body gained immunity and did not develop any infections. India issues medical visa to ailing Pakistani child The plea of the ailing child caught the attention of Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj Bilal was also given a high calorie, high protein and vitamin diet through feeding tube to ensure speedy recovery. The three-year-old was discharged last week, the doctor informed.
  17. Charlie Gard (L) and his parents Connie and Chris Gard. (Image courtesy: BBC) LONDON: Charlie Gard ? the terminally-ill British baby whose plight drew sympathy from Pope Francis and US President Donald Trump and sparked a debate about medical ethics ? died on Friday, his mother said. His parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, had fought a lengthy legal battle to allow him to be taken to the United States for treatment for a rare genetic condition. But despite the international attention brought by his case, he died exactly one week short of his first birthday. "Our beautiful little boy has gone. We are so proud of you, Charlie," his mother Yates said in a statement. A court had ordered that the 11-month-old should be moved from hospital to a hospice, where his life support was withdrawn. Supporters around the world donated £1.35 million ($1.75 million, 1.5 million euros) via an online fundraising site to support his parents and their efforts to keep their son alive, while 350,000 signed a petition demanding that he be allowed to receive experimental treatment in the US. Following news of the boy's death, Pope Francis, who supported the campaign, tweeted, "I entrust little Charlie to the Father and pray for his parents and all those who loved him." British Prime Minister Theresa May said she was "deeply saddened" by the death while US Vice President Mike Pence wrote he was, "Saddened to hear of the passing of Charlie Gard." Mitochondrial disease Gard was born on August 4, last year, with a rare form of mitochondrial disease that causes progressive muscle weakness, including in key organs, such as the heart. He was admitted to hospital at eight weeks old and his condition progressively deteriorated. Gard's parents fought a five-month legal battle for him to be taken to the United States for experimental treatment. They lost a series of appeals in British courts and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Their campaign led to offers of help from the United States and the Vatican, leading the hospital to ask the courts for a final assessment of any new evidence. On July 2, Pope Francis called for the couple to be allowed to "care for their child until the end", saying he had followed the case with "affection and sadness". The following day, US President Donald Trump said in a tweet, "If we can help little Charlie Gard, as per our friends in the UK and the pope, we would be delighted to do so." But the boy's parents gave up their battle last week, saying "time has run out", after they were shown scans indicating that his condition had deteriorated too far. "We are so sorry that we could not save you," they said in an emotional statement at the High Court in London. 'Agony' Judge Nicholas Francis summed up the emotion involved in the case. "It is impossible for any of us to comprehend or even begin to imagine the agony to which Charlie's parents have been subjected in recent weeks and months as they have had to come to terms with the decision that they have now made," he said in a judgement. The parents then asked for Gard to be taken to their home for his final days but were overruled by the hospital, which said the ventilator keeping him alive was too bulky to fit through their front door. They finally agreed for him to be placed in a hospice. The case raised fundamental questions about whether parents or the state should have a final say on a child's well-being and whether a child's fate should be settled in a courtroom. It provoked strong reactions, with an army of supporters shouting "shame on GOSH" following this week's court hearing. The hospital issued a statement Friday, saying, "Everyone at Great Ormond Street Hospital sends their heartfelt condolences to Charlie's parents and loved ones at this very sad time."
  18. Just a few days ago, Sunny Leone put an end to the rumours that she was expecting a baby and told reporters that this was just not the right time for her to get pregnant with so much going on in her life. But she also added, “But who knows, some day I will just walk in with a baby in hand. And everyone will be shocked, where did the baby come from?” And, well, exactly that has happened. In an interview with Hindustan Times, Sunny Leone and her husband Daniel Weber revealed that they have adopted a baby girl named Nisha Kaur Weber, and according to Sunny, it was love at first sight. A post shared by Sunny Leone (@sunnyleone) on Jul 8, 2017 at 11:20pm PDT Even though it came out of the blue, isn't it such good news? “It's a responsibility for the rest of our lives. But we have been ready for that — physically, mentally and financially. We were working really hard because we wanted to start a family, and this is the way it's going to start, so it's amazing,” said Sunny Leone. They took the decision to adopt almost two years ago, when they visited an orphanage. But they soon realized the timing wasn't up to them. She said, “We didn't decide. The Indian government and Cara agency decided when we were ready (smiles). We didn't know that you don't get to choose the ashram or orphanage that you adopt from, the ministry chooses for you.” A post shared by Sunny Leone (@sunnyleone) on Jun 24, 2017 at 8:59am PDT And they didn't come up with the name Nisha. Daniel said, “That was her name. They told us that we can change and we had our minds filled with names but she is who she is. Every time, we called her by other names, it just didn't fit her.” Seems like they are pretty excited about being parents, though. A post shared by Sunny Leone (@sunnyleone) on Jul 4, 2017 at 8:13am PDT And if people question them about adoption, Daniel has the perfect response, “When people ask, ‘why did they adopt?' our counter is, ‘oh, why not?' That's normal for us.” Sunny seems to be completely in love with her new baby and, at the end of the day, that is all that matters. She said, “She is so cute. The moment she looks up at you and smiles, it just melts your heart. I look forward to her growing up to become an independent and being her own woman.” A post shared by Sunny Leone (@sunnyleone) on Jun 5, 2017 at 7:00am PDT Well, congratulations to them for finally becoming parents to the most adorable little girl!
  19. Parents line up their babies to race in the NYC Triathlon's annual Diaper Derby, July 14, 2017, in New York City. AFP/Dominick Reuter NEW YORK: It's a race of laughter, false starts and wild bottle waving: New York's Diaper Derby sees 30 infants battle it out for glory in a three-meter crawling contest. There is only one real rule: trying to stumble to your feet is not allowed. From the sidelines, parents will on their progeny with bottles of milk, television remote controls, or jangling keys. There is no stopwatch, and the time it takes these cherubic racers to power down the 10-foot mat is unpredictable. One child might suddenly peg out midway. Another breaks down in tears. A third crawls off backwards. Held in the same Manhattan hotel that hosted Donald Trump's victory party last November, it has been organised for the last seven years by the New York City Triathlon, which this year holds its adult event Sunday. While most parents are after fun memories rather than the diaper-shaped trophy, Tamara Cacchione admits to warming up nine-month daughter Maya up with the theme song from the Hollywood boxing epic "Rocky." geo_embedgallery "She loves other babies? I am worried she may try to kiss the other kids," she says, having travelled from upstate with her husband, grandparents, aunt, and uncle. "This will be something fun to tell her? maybe if she has children or when she is bigger I can show that she did this." Kimi Mei, from Brooklyn, admits to subjecting 10-month-old son Hunter to a "little bit" of training by setting him against a friend in the park. But her "secret weapon" is the remote control he "is not allowed to play with and he always wants to play with". "So I brought it today and I am hoping I can light it up and he will go for it." Chris Kennel, who drove in from Georgia to take part in the triathlon, wants son Carson to become an athlete and thought "he'd have a chance to win." But in the end, 11-month-old Brooke crawled off with the trophy. An out-of-town girl from Dallas, Texas, she made a beeline for the finish line and won all the glory. "She just likes to crawl around a lot," said mother Kristy Bender as her daughter dribbled into the microphone.

REUTERS/Lucas Jackson Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's family may be growing, according to reports on Wednesday that the celebrity couple has hired a surrogate to carry their third child after a doctor advised the reality star against another high-risk pregnancy. People Magazine and E! News, citing unidentified sources, said the couple had hired a surrogate, while TMZ.com said they had agreed to pay the surrogate more than $113,000 to carry a child. It was not clear whether the surrogate was already pregnant. Kardashian's representative did not respond to a request for comment. Kardashian, 36, has two children with rapper West and has spoken openly about her medical struggles during her pregnancies with daughter North, born in 2013, and son Saint, born in 2015, on her E! reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Fans welcome back Kim Kardashian after social media silence Kardashian put up three Facebook entries late on Monday, but made no reference to the robbery at gunpoint in Paris The reality star has given detailed accounts on her blog about the difficulties she experienced during her two labours, and the TV show has followed her various surgeries and doctor consultations in a bid to resolve them. "I think I always knew that surrogacy was an option, but I didn't think it was that realistic of an option, and now I feel like that's my reality," Kardashian said in an April episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. The surrogacy reports come after a difficult year for the couple. Kardashian was the victim of a robbery in Paris last October, in which millions of dollars' worth of jewellery was stolen from her. That led her to boost security measures and to take a temporary pause from public engagements and prolific social media postings. Late last year, West cancelled a December tour and was hospitalised after an apparent mental health breakdown. The couple has embraced a more modest social media presence over the past few months, with Kardashian occasionally posting glimpses into their family life. On Wednesday, the reality star launched her own solo make-up line, which sold out within hours.
  21. Photo: File MUMBAI: An Indian woman gave birth to a baby boy on an international commercial flight as it flew at 35,000 feet, the airline said on Monday. The unnamed woman, in her 20s, went into premature labour on Sunday´s Jet Airways flight between Damman in Saudi Arabia and Kochi in the southern Indian state of Kerala. "The guest delivered a baby boy at 35,000 feet," Jet Airways said in a statement, adding that a paramedic on board and airline staff helped with the delivery. The Boeing 737 flight, which had 162 passengers on board, was diverted to Mumbai where the woman and her newborn were rushed to a hospital near the airport. An official at Mumbai´s Holy Spirit hospital told AFP on Monday that both the mother and baby boy were doing well. The woman was believed to have been around 32 weeks pregnant when she gave birth. Jet Airways said it was the first time a baby had been born on one of its flights and that it had given him free travel for life on the airline. In August last year, a woman gave birth on a flight from the United Arab Emirates to the Philippines. The plane made an emergency landing in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad so the mother and newborn could receive medical attention before continuing their journey to Manila.
  22. After the gruesome terror attacks at the London Bridge, the city was struck by yet another terrible incident that shook it to its core. Last night, a massive fire broke out in London’s Grenfell Tower. As the tower was engulfed with enormous flames, there was one woman and a baby that caught onlookers’ attention. In a desperate attempt to save the baby, the woman threw it from a window on the ‘ninth or tenth floor’ and while this sends chills down our spine, it’s a miracle that the baby was caught by a man standing on the ground and is safe and sound as we type this out. © AP “People were starting to appear at the windows, frantically banging and screaming,” Samira Lamrani, a witness told The Telegraph. She said that she saw the woman try to save the baby by dropping her from the window. “The windows were slightly ajar, a woman gesturing that she was about to throw her baby and if somebody could catch her baby,” Samira further added while stating that a man ran forward and managed to catch the baby. Whether that unidentified woman managed to escape the fire is still unknown. © Facebook In fact, there was another resident called Zara who spoke to a radio station that she saw a woman throwing her five-year-old son, from a fifth or sixth floor window in a bid to escape the flames. Although the boy is said to be doing okay, he might have got some bruises and broken bones. There was another woman who was screaming “my baby, my baby, I need to get out, I need to save my baby.” The fire has already taken its toll on 12 people and the death count is expected to rise in the following hours.
  23. NEW DELHI: Indian police said Wednesday they have arrested one of three men accused of gang-raping a woman and tossing her baby from a moving auto rickshaw, killing the infant. Police released sketches of the three men -- including the rickshaw driver -- late Tuesday after registering a case of murder and gang-rape following the alleged attack last month in Gurgaon, on the outskirts of New Delhi. "We have made one arrest, yes. As far as the two others are concerned, a team is after them and we will arrest them very soon," Gurgaon´s commissioner of police Sandeep Khirwar told AFP. In her complaint to police, the woman said she got into the auto rickshaw with her nine-month-old daughter around midnight on May 29 to go to her parents´ home in Gurgaon in northern Haryana state. There were two men already in the rickshaw who started to harass her as soon as she got in and the three sexually assaulted her for several hours before dumping her by a roadside, according to her complaint. After being released from her ordeal the woman went back to look for her baby, who had died of head injuries, and took her to hospital on the subway, Khirwar said. India has a gruesome record on rape, with the capital New Delhi alone registering 2,199 rape cases in 2015 -- an average of six a day, according to most recent official figures. Nearly 40,000 rape cases are reported every year but the real number is thought to be much higher, with victims wary of how their complaints will be dealt with or the social stigma attached to *** crimes. India strengthened its laws on sexual violence after the fatal gang rape of a Delhi student in 2012 caused global outrage, but attacks on women are still widespread.

  25. CARACAS: Deaths of babies soared by 30 percent last year in Venezuela, hit by shortages of food and medicine in an economic and political crisis, the health ministry said on Wednesday. Deaths of mothers in childbirth soared by two-thirds meanwhile, according to the data published online by the ministry -- the latest such figures since 2015. It said 11,466 babies younger than one year old died in 2016, up from 8,812 the year before. The report gave no comparative rate in relation to the number of births. Among the causes of infant death it cited were septicemia, pneumonia, premature birth and breathing difficulties. The report said 756 women died in childbirth, just under 66 percent more than the previous year. Cases of malaria rose by 76 percent to more than 240,000. Medical associations thought the disease had been eradicated in Venezuela but say it has re-emerged during the past three years of crisis and reached epidemic level in 13 of the country's 24 states. The collapse in prices for Venezuela's crucial oil exports has left it short of cash to import medicine and basic goods. Deadly unrest broke out last month with the opposition demanding elections to replace President Nicolas Maduro, whom they blame for the crisis.
