  1. KARACHI: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir Rao Anwar has escaped a suspected suicide attack on his vehicle in Karachi, police officials told Geo News on Tuesday. Police said an explosion took place after an object hit Anwar's armoured personnel carrier (APC) in the city's Malir Cantonment area Tuesday evening. Anwar remained unhurt in the attack, which officials said appeared to be a suicide bombing from initial information. This is not the first time Anwar has been the target of an assassination attempt. In May 2015, assailants targeted his police convoy in a gun-and-grenade attack. The police personnel escaped unhurt, while five attackers were killed in retaliatory gunfire in that incident. His convoy was again attacked near his residence in the Malir Cantt area in June 2015. The policemen remained unhurt while all attackers were again killed in retaliatory fire. In 2012, Anwar escaped a suicide bombing when he was attacked on his way to court.

Photo: File KARACHI: Intezar Ahmed, the 19-year-old who was shot dead after Anti Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) officials opened fire on his car on Khayaban-e-Ittehad road early Sunday, died from a single bullet wound behind his ear, confirmed a medico-legal report released on Tuesday. The report also disclosed that other than the aforementioned body part, there was no mark of a bullet or torture on the body of the deceased. It adds that the deceased had blood marks and sand on his clothes. Meanwhile, the girl who was allegedly accompanying Ahmed told investigators that she did not see the shooters, a source told Geo News. "The CCTV footage of the incident is with the police and eight of the nine police personnel named in the case have been arrested," DIG Police South Azad Khan told reporters at a press conference on Monday.   3. KARACHI: Anti-terrorism courts (ATCs) in Karachi Monday sentenced two men to 21 years in prison each, after they were convicted of possessing illegal arms and explosives. The ATC-II sentenced accused, Afroze alias Nakaam Guddu, for 21 years and imposed a fine worth Rs50,000 on him, a spokesman for the Pakistan Rangers Sindh said in a statement. Guddu, who was apprehended in November 2015, was affiliated with Muttahida Qaumi Movement-London (MQM-L), it said. The other accused, Shahabuddin, was also sentenced for 21 years along with a fine imposed on him worth Rs100,000 by ATC-XIII. The statement added that Shahabuddin was arrested in March 2017.

Nineteen-year-old Intezar Ahmed was killed after shots were fired at his car. The police had earlier maintained that the youth was killed in firing by unidentified assailants on motorcycles. However, it was later disclosed that the Anti-Car Lifting Cell officials opened fire at Ahmed's car after he failed to stop his vehicle despite their instructions. "There was deployment of the Anti-Car Lifting Cell there. They [ACLC personnel] opened fire on the car, which hit them. We are looking into this matter," DIG Saqib Ismail told reporters outside the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre on Sunday. Two more personnel of Anti-Car Lifting Cell had surrendered themselves for involvement in the case Sunday night. According to the police, the two personnel had donned plain clothes while conducting snap checking alongside other officials. The eyewitnesses claimed that these two personnel had fired at the youth?s car. KARACHI: The Tehreek-e-Labaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYRA) held a rally at the Bagh-e-Jinnah in Karachi on Sunday, where the leader of the religious group, Syed Khadim Hussain Rizvi, also addressed participants. Apparently criticising his political rivals, Rizvi said those who talk about religion do not climb on top of containers to ask for money. He said that those who take money leave their own people behind. He said that the time for the rule of thieves and dacoits was over. Formed in 2015, the TLYRA religious group came into the spotlight in recent months after it held a protest sit-in in the federal capital Islamabad, paralysing the twin cities for weeks. The protests in November spread to other parts of the country, and were eventually called off following the resignation of Federal Law Minister Zahid Hamid and the signing of an agreement between the government and protesters. The party has recently also found a somewhat sizeable vote-bank in parts of Punjab. In the bypolls in PP-20 Chakwal-I on Jan 10, candidate of Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan, Chaudhry Nasir Abbas, secured 16,576 votes, ranking at the third place. An independent candidate backed by the party also finished in third place in the NA-120 (Lahore) by-elections last year, winning 6 percent of the total vote.
  8. KARACHI: A man was killed in Khyaban-e-Ittehad area in the wee hours of Sunday. The police earlier maintained that the man, Intezar Ahmed son of Ishtiaq Ahmed, was killed in firing by unknown assailants, later it was disclosed that the law enforcement authorities also opened fire at his car as he failed to stop his car despite their instructions. Four policemen were taken into custody due to their alleged involvement in the case. The deceased?s father informed media that Intezar, who recently came back from Malaysia, had a fight with two men two days back, Fahad and Haider, sons of a lawyer and policeman respectively. SSP South Javed Akbar informed press that 15 bullet cases of 9MM were recovered from the crime site, adding that a girl was also with the deceased, who fled after the incident.
  9. The suspect allegedly assaulted a six-year-old boy in a bakery, police said KARACHI: Another case of sexual assault of a minor surfaced in the city on Saturday. According to police, the suspect ? a man named Tanveer ? allegedly assaulted the six-year-old boy in a bakery on January 8. The accused was arrested from the jurisdiction of the Napier Police Station, police officials said. A case was registered against the incident on the complaint of the minor?s mother, who is blind. The accused was produced before the Judicial Magistrates (South) court today, where he was remanded into police custody for two days. The incident is the latest in a string of similar incidents of child abuse which emerged just as the country reels from the brutal rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl, Zainab, in Kasur earlier this month. On Friday, a 10-year-old boy went missing but was returned home by his alleged kidnapper on Saturday morning. According to the child?s uncle, an unknown man lured the minor into going with him by offering him to buy candy. The boy reportedly has no signs of torture on his body. A wave of protests swept across the country after the discovery of Zainab?s lifeless body, as the enraged public demanded immediate justice for the victim and various circles called for implementation of child protection laws to prevent such tragedies in future.

Hearing a sotu motu case pertaining to sale of substandard packaged milk at the Karachi Registry, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar directed the relevant authorities to conduct laboratory tests of all brands of packaged milk products available in the city?s markets. The CJP expressed annoyance at the concerned authorities? failure to submit complete details to the court regarding use of injections in cows. In his remarks to a representative of dairy farmers, Justice Nisar stated that the injections administered to cows are resulting in breast cancer and other hormonal problems in women. The Chief Justice demanded to know in which districts injections are being administered to cows to increase their milk production, and summoned a report on use and confiscation of the injections, by 11 pm tonight. The CJP took notice of the sale of substandard packaged milk earlier this week.   13. KARACHI: Karachi Film Society announced on Friday to hold the first Pakistan International Film Festival, scheduled from March 29, 2018 to April 1, 2018, in Karachi. The PIFF is an initiative of the Karachi Film Society, which hosted a press conference here today. According to the press release, the festival will comprise film premieres and special screenings in the categories of feature length films, documentaries and short films. The statement said that the PIFF management is inviting the overseas delegates of filmmakers, artists and professionals, and expects many renowned names to grace the festival. The festival will hold workshops for young aspiring filmmakers where they can learn the craft from renowned mentors. The press release said that a special mobile screening programme is also included in which the PIFF teams will show selected films to young audiences at different locations of Karachi. The special panel discussions on women?s role in Film/ TV and seminars on the Pakistani film industry will also be an integral part of the agenda, said the press release.

According to details, fire brigade personnel have successfully managed to reduce the intensity of the flames. The cause of the fire is not known yet. The highest number of incidents of ATM skimming took place at a major shopping mall in Karachi's Clifton area.
  16. KARACHI: Residents of Gulbahar took the law into their own hands as they caught and killed a suspected robber early Thursday, Geo News reported. According to SSP Central Irfan Baloch, two robbers on a motorcycle crashed into a wall during a robbery attempt. Enraged residents then encircled the suspects and started beating them, after which one of the suspects died while the other was injured. The injured robber was handed over to the police, who arrested him. In another robbery attempt in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, residents managed to catch a robbery suspect, who was beaten and then handed over to the police. An accomplice of the suspect fled from the spot. In a similar incident earlier this month, two robbers were caught during an armed robbery in Saddar area. The arrested foreigners were seen suspiciously doing rounds of ATM booths on Karachi's Abdullah Haroon Road. Local shop-keepers took hold of the two and handed them over to police. "We have recovered ATM skimming devices from both the suspects," confirmed SP Saddar Tauqeer Naeem. "They had come to remove detach skimming devices from the machines," Naeem added. What is ATM skimming? ATM skimming is can be regarded as identity theft for debit cards. Fraudsters employ different techniques to record your PIN code for accessing the hard-earned money in your account. In some instances, the schemers stick a fake card-reader on the ATM, while in others they place a fake keypad on the machine to get your PIN code. Another technique employed in this crime is the use of a hidden camera, which records your PIN code and conveys it to fraudsters. A few ATM skimmers also change the entire display of the ATM.

Rangers? special powers have been extended for another 90 days from January 10 to April 10, 2018 KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has extended the special policing powers of the Rangers for another 90 days in Karachi. The current validity of the powers conferred upon the Rangers in Karachi Division under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 expires on January 10 (today). The chief minister, lauding the achievements of the targeted operation launched in the city in September 2013 against terrorists, target killers and extortionists, approved a summary to extend the Rangers? special powers for another 90 days from January 10 to April 10, 2018. Under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, Rangers can take independent actions against criminals and suspected terrorists within Karachi division for 90 days.
  20. KARACHI: At least one person was shot dead late Tuesday night here at Khayaban-e-Roomi in the city's Defence locale when unidentified persons opened fire on a vehicle, police said. A second person ? who was also riding in the same car ? remained unharmed. It is yet unknown how many assailants had shot at the car, law enforcement agencies (LEAs) stated, adding that the incident was reportedly over "personal enmity". The deceased has been identified as Imran, the LEAs noted, adding the body has been shifted to Jinnah Hospital.

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar has taken suo motu notice of condition of government hospitals in Karachi and summoned all the medical superintendents to appear before Supreme Court Karachi Registry on January 13. The chief justice also directed the medical superintendents to bring a detailed report of availability of equipment or emergency machinery i.e. ventilators, oxygen, incubators, OTs facility, angiography machines, CT scan, MRI machines and ambulances. The reports are desired to explain availability of life saving drugs and medicines that are being provided to the patients free of cost, and the ones they have to purchase from the market. Justice Nisar further sought details of availability of required qualified doctors and nursing staff. The medical superintendents have been directed to appear in person along with referred detailed reports reflecting the positions of respective hospitals. Meanwhile, the chief justice also took notice of admissions in private medical colleges in Sindh and sought a report from concerned authorities, along with notice for personal appearance, including the CEOs and owners of private medical colleges in Karachi. The matter has been fixed for hearing on January 13 at the Karachi Registry of the apex court. Justice Nisar also took notice of blockade of public roads for VVIPs' movement all over the country and has summoned reports from concerned authorities.
  22. KARACHI: Two robbers were caught on Sunday during an armed robbery in Karachi?s Saddar area. Citizens after getting hold of one of the robbers, gave him a beating, following which he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, while the other died in a shoot-out. The robbers had killed a shopkeeper earlier over resistance during the robbery. The two were running away after stealing from one of the shops in the mobile market. After people caught the first robber, the other one fled and hid inside the market. The citizens called police and Rangers who surrounded the area. The other robber was killed in an exchange of fire with security personnel. The thief, who was wounded in mob beating, was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

The suspects were taken into custody following a raid that police conducted in the said locale. On the other hand, two terrorists ? allegedly belonging to a banned extremist outfit ? were shot dead in Nawa Killi near Quetta, Balochistan. Police said they were attempting to arrest the accomplices of an arrested suspect, who, himself, was in the vehicle with the authorities in order to help in identification. But the suspect's accomplices opened fire in a bid to help their detained friend escape. In the resulting exchange, one of the attackers, as well as the under-arrest suspect, were killed. Machine cartridges recovered Security forces recovered almost 7,000 cartridges of heavy machine guns from the ground Saturday night during a raid in Gotak village of Orakzai Agency, they said. The recovered cartridges were buried underground in order to hide them from police.

Two suspects were detained during a raid in New Karachi locale, security officials stated, adding that weapons were recovered from the arrestees. On the other hand, two other suspects belonging to the Taala Torr group were arrested, Rao Anwar ? the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for Malir ? said. The two detainees are accused of robbing shops around the city by breaking the locks outside and escaping with cash, the police officer explained. Anwar added that cutters and other lock-breaking tools were recovered from the two suspects.
  25. KARACHI: A man died in a car accident in the metropolis' area of Gulbai on early Thursday morning, informed rescue sources. Meanwhile, two suspects involved in street crimes were arrested by the law enforcement authorities near Nazimabad underpass and Sharafi Goth respectively. The suspect from Nazimabad was arrested after he was injured in a police raid. Separately, two groups exchanged fire in a clash at the wedding of the nephew of Member National Assembly Afzal Khokhar; as many as two people, including Khokhar's relative, were killed and eight injured in the firing. PPP representative in Lala Musa General Councillor Chaudhry Zulfiqar along with his driver was critically injured after unknown suspects fired on his car.
