  1. Photo: Reuters BERLIN: Germany?s opposition parties on Sunday called for the abolition of a new law that aims to rid social media of hate speech, saying it was wrong for private companies to be making decisions about whether posts are unlawful. The legislation, which came into force on January 1, can impose fines of up to 50 million euros ($60.1 million) on sites that fail to remove hate speech promptly, raising fears that Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms could block more content than necessary. So far Twitter has deleted anti-Muslim and anti-migrant posts by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and also blocked satirical magazine Titanic?s account after it parodied the AfD?s anti-Muslim comments. Nicola Beer, general secretary of the liberal Free Democrats (FDP), told Welt am Sonntag newspaper that prosecuting authorities needed to be equipped with tools to enforce the law on the internet rather than leaving decisions about the legality of posts to platform operators. ?The past few days have clearly shown that private providers aren?t always able to make the right decision about whether suspected criminal statements made online are unlawful, satirical or a tasteless expression of opinion that nonetheless needs to be tolerated in a democracy,? she said. Beer added that the existing law needed to be replaced with a ?proper? one. Simone Peter, leader of the Greens, told the same newspaper that it was not acceptable that US companies such as Twitter were able to influence freedom of opinion and the press in Germany, referring to the suspension of Titanic?s account. She said networks such as Twitter need to take some responsibility for posts on their platforms but ?without being given the role of judge?. After the Titanic account was blocked a Twitter spokesman said the company did not comment on individual accounts for reasons of privacy and security. Sahra Wagenknecht, parliamentary leader of the radical Left, told the Funke group of newspapers that her party supported initiatives to abandon the law. ?The law is a slap in the face for all democratic principles because, in a constitutional state, courts rather than companies make decisions about what is unlawful and what is not,? she said. The AfD has already announced that it will consider filing a complaint against the law. On Thursday Germany?s top-selling Bild newspaper also called for the law to be scrapped, saying it was stifling free speech and making martyrs out of anti-immigrant politicians whose posts are deleted. 2. Though I was always an active kid in school, the never abolishing stigma of studying medical or engineering took me towards the worst of my health. In my childhood, I was into sports and very active. I would practice Karate and swim regularly. Apart from that, I also captained my school cricket team at the district level. Then extensive studies got the best of me. Two years of my life were just spent just eating junk and sitting on a bench or sleeping. I started expanding horizontally and hit the highest on the scale at 110 kilos. This is what I looked like. © Pratik Thakkar It was not just me being unhealthy but it also came with the name calling and teasing which usually happens when you are fat. I joined a business management degree over engineering or medical degree and had plenty of time in hand. That is when I decided that let's get to the gym and do something as I was free now. For the first couple of years, I headed to the gym six days a week and started clean eating with Sunday as a cheat day. I had little to no knowledge about how things work. Thankfully, I did not follow any fad diets or did something silly in the gym because of my ego that would lead to any injury. © Pratik Thakkar I lost a good amount of weight and came down to 75-80 Kgs with this consistency but then my ambitions rose further. I wanted to get abs and see them once. The gym trainer obviously suggested steroids with a stupid statement that 'everybody does it' and whoever has abs is on steroids. The only reason I didn't do it was because I was apprehensive of the health risks and the money involved. But that sparked a certain curiosity for me. I started reading and learning about nutrition and training, all while keeping the consistency the same. Six months forward from there, I got to see my abs - without using any drugs or fat burning supplements. So in all, this took me around 2.5 to 3 years as most of the time I was doing things without a clue but thankfully did not fall down any rabbit hole. My passion grew during this period and since then, I have done three fitness courses and helped hundreds of people get fit by co-founding GetSetGo Fitness and with online coaching. The only message I want to give out to people is do not look for a quick fix or invest a lot in supplements or try drugs because it is faster. Faster is not always the best thing. © Pratik Thakkar My goals for 2018 is to get lean for a photoshoot (no, I do not flash my abs year round because by doing that, you miss out on the opportunity to gain muscle and nor is it something that is healthy for your hormones) and then transition to a powerlifting style workout routine and do a lean bulk along with it. And of course, I will continue to coach my online clients and give them smashing results. Just keep working hard! Pratik Thakkar is the co-founder and director of GetSetGo Fitness, an online fitness company that helps people with fitness goals right from losing weight to competing in bodybuilding shows. He is an online fitness coach who is regarded as someone who will make it easy for you to understand the process by putting things in the right context and providing science-based recommendations. In his free time, Pratik likes to read about psychology or gaming on his PlayStation. You can download a free nutrition guide from his site which will nail down the basics for you. 4. LONDON: Former US president Barack Obama said the way people communicate via social media risked splintering society and leaders had to ensure the Internet did not cocoon users within their own biases. ?All of us in leadership have to find ways in which we can recreate a common space on the Internet,? Obama said in an interview conducted by Britain?s Prince Harry, broadcast on BBC radio on Wednesday. ?One of the dangers of the Internet is that people can have entirely different realities, they can be just cocooned in information that reinforces their current biases.? Obama has previously warned that social media platforms can lead people to make snap judgments about complex decisions although he has refrained from criticizing his successor Donald Trump who regularly uses Twitter. Obama said in the interview broadcast on Wednesday that social media should promote diverse views in a way that ?doesn?t lead to a Balkanisation of our society? and moving online communities offline helped people to see that many issues were not as simple as they might seem in a chatroom. ?It?s also by the way harder to be as obnoxious and cruel in person as people can be anonymously on the Internet,? he said. ?Meet in the pub...Meet at a place of worship. Meet in a neighborhood and get to know each other.? Wedding diplomacy? Obama spoke to Harry in an interview conducted by the prince as a guest editor for BBC radio?s daily morning news show and focused on their shared interest in promoting causes. The interview took place in September. Harry was asked by the BBC whether he would invite the Obamas to his wedding next year with US actress Meghan Markle. ?I don?t know about that,? Harry said. ?We haven?t put the invites or the guest list together. Who knows whether they are going to be invited or not. I wouldn?t want to ruin that surprise.? The Sun newspaper said on Tuesday that British government officials had urged Harry not to invite the Obamas to his wedding for fear of angering Trump. In the BBC interview, Obama spoke of being able to take a longer-term view on issues such as climate change. ?Take some of the tragedies that have happened recently, with hurricanes devastating first Houston and parts of Florida and now Puerto Rico,? he said. ?Today those aren?t my direct responsibilities but I can focus over the next 20 years in making sure that we don?t have more hurricanes and natural disasters that are accelerated as a consequence of climate change and the ability to focus long term I think is a great luxury.?

  8. You?re on the web, you?re in the cloud. But don?t neglect good old-fashioned paper. That?s the advice from internet pioneer Vint Cerf, who is afraid that all our digital memories could be lost as technology moves on. ?People say: ?What should I do about my photographs?? The ones you really care about? Find some really good quality photographic paper and print them, because we know those will last at least 150 years,? Cerf told reporters on the sidelines of the Internet Governance Forum in Geneva. ?I know for a fact that I have information, in digital form, down in my basement, on 5-¼ inch floppy disks. And I know the bits are still there. But I don?t have anything that knows how to read them anymore.? Cerf, a Google vice-president and co-designer of the TCP/IP protocol that connects devices over the internet, said he managed to find a disk drive for some of his ancient disks, only to discover he lacked the software to read them. ?If we want our descendants to know something about our world we have to make sure the information is still retrievable or understandable,? he said. A white-bearded 74-year-old nicknamed ?the Father of the Internet?, Cerf jotted notes on his conference program as he spoke, and confessed that in several ways paper was better than the state-of-the-art phone he clutched in his other hand. ?First of all you can make little sketches easily on paper, and second it?s on my (Governance Forum) calendar, that means I can remember where was I, and what was I doing, when I wrote that note. So for me, this is like a plug-in extra memory,? he said, to laughter. ?Look, I also wear three piece suits. I?m just a 19th century guy in a 21st century world.?

  10. The popular adult film star August Ames passed away this Tuesday in Camarillo, California. The 23-year old, who has appeared in over 270 films and won twice at the Adult Video News Awards, had stirred up an online firestorm just a day before her death. Ames' husband, adult film director Kevin Moore, said in a statement: “She was the kindest person I ever knew and she meant the world to me. Please leave this as a private family matter in this difficult time.” A post shared by August Ames (@msmaplefever) on Dec 1, 2017 at 5:22pm PST According to IB Times, the Ventura County, Ca. Health Care Agency confirmed Grabowski's death yesterday evening, saying, “Mercedes Grabowski died of asphyxia due to hanging. Manner is suicide.” Hollywood Life reported that Ames' close friends claimed that she had been battling depression, and that online bullying may have played a part in her death. Last weekend, Ames received a lot of backlash after posting a series of tweets about how she refuses to complete a scene with a man who has previously starred in gay porn, calling it “homework for her body.” whichever (lady) performer is replacing me tomorrow for @EroticaXNews , you're shooting with a guy who has shot gay porn, just to let cha know. BS is all I can sayð¤·ð½âï¸ Do agents really not care about who they're representing? #ladirect I do my homework for my bodyð¤âï¸ð — August Ames (@AugustAmesxxx) December 3, 2017 This initial tweet caused a lot of controversy, with everyone calling her a homophobe. NOT homophobic. Most girls don't shoot with guys who have shot gay porn, for safety. That's just how it is with me. I'm not putting my body at risk, i don't know what they do in their private lives. https://t.co/MRKt2GrAU4 — August Ames (@AugustAmesxxx) December 3, 2017 She went on to explain further. How am I homophobic if I myself am attracted to women? Not wanting to have *** with gay men is not homophobic; they don't want to have *** with me eitherð so byeeeee — August Ames (@AugustAmesxxx) December 3, 2017 She continued to fight off the trolls saying she was just stating her opinion. Sorry, it was just my opinion. My body, my rules. Honestly I'm sorry if I offended anyone. — August Ames (@AugustAmesxxx) December 4, 2017 I'll keep my opinion in my head next time and be fakeðð½ https://t.co/wRRB33DneD — August Ames (@AugustAmesxxx) December 4, 2017 As the harassment kept going on, other people also jumped to her rescue. Honestly anyone who got butthurt over this was just trying to look cool in front of peers. MOST performers don't work with crossovers, it's not new, & it's not rude OR offensive to protect yourself & others NOR is it bad to choose who you want to ****. Your body your choiceð¤ð¼ — ðð®NoelleEastonðð® (@NoelleEaston) December 4, 2017 That one initial tweet blew up so much, and she knew how much damage it had caused. My night: pic.twitter.com/GiGbWcVXun — August Ames (@AugustAmesxxx) December 4, 2017 She kept explaining. “Choose who YOU want to work with” “Don't do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable” “Share your thoughts” Hmm. Well, I did all three, and twitter took a dump on með¤·ð½âï¸ — August Ames (@AugustAmesxxx) December 4, 2017 And she knew she was just feeding the trolls by giving them attention. I fed them — August Ames (@AugustAmesxxx) December 4, 2017 The whole Twitter drama had reached another level, and she was also regretting voicing her opinions. Everything has been blown out of proportion. That is very offensive to say “aids infected dick” not cool. I'm not homophobic. I should have just stayed in beeeddddd todaaayyyyyyyy and not tweeted at all. — August Ames (@AugustAmesxxx) December 4, 2017 And, her last and final tweet after the whole drama was: **** y'all — August Ames (@AugustAmesxxx) December 5, 2017 A lot of figures in the porn industry were deeply shocked by the news of Ames' death, and a lot of them tweeted their condolences. Her fellow porn star Abella Danger tweeted: “She was the most kind-hearted person ever.” Producer/director Jules Jordan added: “Rest In Peace to August Ames, one of the best, nicest people I ever knew in the business.” A post shared by August Ames (@msmaplefever) on Nov 22, 2017 at 11:51pm PST Even though nothing is clear, a lot of people are implying that this recent Twitter controversy may have played a big role in her suicide. Fellow porn star and a friend of Ames, Annika Albrite tweeted, “Omg, I can't believe she's dead. You people should have known better than to berate her over her personal thoughts! Shame on all you for beating it into the ground. Online harassment is a real thing & it claimed another life. Someone who I liked & would have even called a friend!” A post shared by August Ames (@msmaplefever) on Nov 18, 2017 at 6:37pm PST Brazzers, a porn production based in Montreal in Canada, also paid tribute to her and chose to postpone a previously planned Ames scene. “In light of today's tragic news Brazzers has decided to postpone the release of tonight's scheduled August Ames scene,” it said. "The scene will be posted at a more appropriate time, as we come to terms with this devastating loss. Thank you for your understanding.”

  13. Are you fresh in the market, looking to scout for some potential partner suited to you? Setting up an online dating profile is similar to setting up an impressive resume to entice a potential employee. You are after all, marketing your potential and seeking validation. To nail the perfect dating profile, you need something catchy and relatable to your future partner. Some common catchphrases may not work for your profile so you have to put out the best possible version of you online. You don't have to be Robert Downey Jr. on your online dating profile but you can still floor the ladies if you keep these pointers in mind! Don't Be A Cliché Be a little more innovative with your profile and don't use the same old lingos and jargon. Like using 'looking for the girl of my dreamzzz' is a bit redundant and overused. Let's face it; the girl of your dreams doesn't exist because dreams are fictional. So look for someone more real, by being a bit more creative. For instance check this guy's profile out and draw some serious inspiration! Be Mindful Of Your Spellings And Grammar Remember how you were asked to revise your papers after you finished writing a test, before you submitted them? Yeah, do the same thing here. Revise what you have written on your profile and check if you've made any silly spelling or grammatical mistakes. Everyone dislikes a bad speller or bad grammar! Replace Crass With Class Be proper in your sentence formation and don't be crass! Sometimes you may mistake what's crass for what's cool. Well it's not! Being crass doesn't let people take you seriously. Having a good command over your language skills does. Be 'Punny' And Witty Let's face it, women love a man with good humour and great wit. Witty and funny is the new sexy. Puns are never too overrated so if you can sparingly use them, then do so. A funny and witty profile is not only boring but it breaks the monotony of having to go through all the other boring profiles. Don't Make Your Profile Purely About *** Even if you're there just for ***, don't scream *** through your online dating profile. There are other ways to get the kinda attention you want and you can be a bit subtle about it. If you're there purely for hook-up purposes, make your intentions clear and don't be crass about it! If you're sleazy on your online dating profile, you aren't getting laid for sure! Don't Brag Women hate men who brag about their assets or talents, especially on an online dating platform. Brag away all you like to your friends etc. but when you set up your profile make sure you're as humble as you can be. Showing off the cars you drive, or the expensive vacations you take or even the mansion you live in isn't gonna save your singledom! Be Real This is the most important point to keep in mind, after being eloquent. Be real and true to who you are. Put the real you out there, if you're looking for a serious relationship. Don't make up stuff about yourself that isn't true because in all honesty, it isn't fair to the other person. If you don't like who you are, then maybe don't set up a dating profile online? There are many other things you can keep in mind before setting up an online dating profile but if you adhere to these 7 crucial pointers, your success rate online is definitely gonna skyrocket!
  14. Many bodybuilding products sold online are mislabeled and contain unapproved drugs and other ingredients that may not be safe, a new study suggests. Researchers tested 44 products they bought online that were marketed as nonsteroidal selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs), which mimic the effect of testosterone and help build muscle. Overall, only about half of these items actually contained SARMs, the study found. One in four products contained ingredients that weren?t on the label, including potentially dangerous drugs, and 59% had more or less than the advertised amounts of certain ingredients. ?Our findings show that people should be extremely careful about using these unapproved drugs purchased over the internet not only because these drugs can have harmful effects on their health, but also because the labels cannot be trusted and many products may contain other chemicals not listed on the label whose safety is unknown,? said study co-author Dr. Shalender Bhasin of Harvard Medical School Brigham and Women?s Hospital in Boston. Anabolic steroids are among the most frequently abused appearance- and performance-enhancing drugs, researchers note online November 28 in JAMA. Use of these drugs was once mostly limited to athletes, but they?ve gained in popularity among men seeking to build muscle and appear more fit. SARMs are designed to have effects similar to steroids, and several companies are developing SARMs as potential treatment for functional limitations associated with aging and muscle-wasting disorders. The US Food and Drug Administration hasn?t approved any SARMs to treat these medical problems. These unapproved drugs are marketed as dietary supplements even though they haven?t been reviewed for safety or effectiveness, the FDA has warned. Consumers shouldn?t use SARMs in bodybuilding products because they can have life-threatening side effects such as heart attacks, strokes and severe liver damage, the FDA has warned. SARMS, like anabolic steroids, are among the substances athletes aren?t allowed to use under rules outlined by the World Anti-Doping Agency. For the study, researchers searched online for suppliers selling SARMs and bought all of the items they found that were in stock and possible to purchase. Then, the study team had all of the products they bought tested using protocols followed by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Some products were found to contain a drug that increases growth hormone and other substances that are also banned by that agency, the study found. Four products were found to contain the breast cancer drug tamoxifen. Most undisclosed substances found in the tested products were themselves experimental. Some of the compounds ? Ostarine, Andarine, LGD-4033 and ibutamoren ? have been tested in humans even though they have not yet won approval by the FDA. Development of another compound found in tested products, GW-501516, was halted because of safety concerns. Another compound discovered in the products, SR9009, has been through some preliminary clinical trials but hasn?t yet been tested in humans. ?But people do spend millions of dollars on unregulated drugs every day ? and at their peril,? said Dr Richard Auchus, author of an accompanying editorial and a researcher at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Vitamin D and calcium are the only supplements people should buy, and even then consumers should only shop from legitimate suppliers like the website for a drugstore chain, Auchus advised. That?s because the current study highlights problems with supplements that go beyond just SARMs, which may lure a subset of the bodybuilding community with a distrust of medical professionals and a penchant for risk-taking behaviour, Anchus said by email. ?This is one of many warnings about such supplements that scam and endanger the public,? Auchus added.
  15. Black Friday and Thanksgiving online sales in the United States surged to record highs as shoppers bagged deep discounts and bought more on their mobile devices, heralding a promising start to the key holiday season, according to retail analytics firms. US retailers raked in a record $7.9 billion in online sales on Black Friday and Thanksgiving, up 17.9 percent from a year ago, according to Adobe Analytics, which measures transactions at the largest 100 US web retailers, on Saturday. Adobe said Cyber Monday is expected to drive $6.6 billion in internet sales, which would make it the largest US online shopping day in history. In the run-up to the holiday weekend, traditional retailers invested heavily in improving their websites and bulking up delivery options, preempting a decline in visits to brick-and-mortar stores. Several chains tightened store inventories as well, to ward off any post-holiday liquidation that would weigh on profits. TVs, laptops, toys and gaming consoles - particularly the PlayStation 4 - were among the most heavily discounted and the biggest sellers, according to retail analysts and consultants. Commerce marketing firm Criteo said 40 percent of Black Friday online purchases were made on mobile phones, up from 29 percent last year. No brick-and-mortar sales data for Thanksgiving or Black Friday was immediately available, but Reuters reporters and industry analysts noted anecdotal signs of muted activity - fewer cars in mall parking lots, shoppers leaving stores without purchases in hand. Stores offered heavy discounts, creative gimmicks and free gifts to draw bargain hunters out of their homes, but some shoppers said they were just browsing the merchandise, reserving their cash for internet purchases. There was little evidence of the delirious shopper frenzy customary of Black Fridays from past years. However, retail research firm ShopperTrak said store traffic fell less than 1 percent on Black Friday, bucking industry predictions of a sharper decline. ?There has been a significant amount of debate surrounding the shifting importance of brick-and-mortar retail,? Brian Field, ShopperTrak?s senior director of advisory services, said. ?The fact that shopper visits remained intact on Black Friday illustrates that physical retail is still highly relevant and when done right, it is profitable.? The National Retail Federation (NRF), which had predicted strong holiday sales helped by rising consumer confidence, said on Friday that fair weather across much of the nation had also helped draw shoppers into stores. The NRF, whose overall industry sales data is closely watched each year, is scheduled to release Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales numbers on Tuesday. US consumer confidence has been strengthening over this past year, due to a labour market that is churning out jobs, rising home prices and stock markets that are hovering at record highs.
  16. Shoppers reach out for television sets as they compete to purchase retail items on Black Friday at a store in Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 23, 2017. REUTERS/Paulo Whitaker CHICAGO/NEW YORK: US stores offered deep discounts, entertainment, and free gifts to draw bargain hunters on Black Friday ? the traditional start of the holiday shopping season ? but some shoppers said they were just eyeing goods, reserving their cash for online purchases. A sharp rise in online sales made the overall picture more positive for traditional retailers expanding beyond brick-and-mortar, sending their shares higher. Stores had also carefully managed inventory, hoping to ward off any post-holiday liquidation that would weigh on profits. There was little of the over-the-top frenzy that had been a hallmark of Black Friday in years past and some stores appeared to be getting creative with gimmicks beyond heavy discounts. But signs pointing to muted in-store sales ? fewer cars in mall parking lots, shoppers leaving with no purchases ? do not portend a weak holiday season as US consumers are expected to spend more overall, analysts and industry executives said. Black Friday sales were off to a strong start online, at $640 million of 10 AM ET (1500 GMT) ? up 18.4 percent from a year ago ? according to Adobe Analytics. On Thanksgiving Day, US shoppers spent more than $2.87 billion online. Some stores and websites struggle to keep up. Some sites experienced brief outages, including Lowe?s, H&M, and the Gap, according to website performance monitors. And Macy?s Inc customers in states ? including Texas, Arizona, and Illinois ? took to social media to complain about the retailer?s credit card processing system. The company said payment processing was taking longer than usual in its stores and it was working to fix the problem. The hiccups dragged Macy?s shares 0.6 lower in extended trading. They had ended the regular session up 2.1 percent, boosted by comments from Chief Executive Jeff Gennette, who told CNBC Macy?s was better off this year than last, had robust online demand, and was in a good place for holiday promotions. Adobe forecast online Black Friday sales of $5 billion, which would be a record high. Online retailers will rake in an additional $6.6 billion on Cyber Monday, Adobe said. It measures 80 percent of online transactions at the largest 100 US web retailers. Macy?s and J.C. Penney Co Inc had ordered and managed inventory better this time, according to Burt Flickinger, managing director of Strategic Resources Group, a consultancy with seven researchers out in the field. ?The turnout this morning has been relatively slow but it is still the best we have seen in three years. We expect it to pick up as the day progresses,? Flickinger said, citing improving consumer confidence, a strong job market and healthy housing prices. Some shoppers were lured by the promise of spectacle, while others felt the pull of nostalgia. ?It?s like a hangout, it?s an experience,? said Jonathan Lin, 17. ?All my friends are back from college and we got together.? ?There?s something nostalgic about being at the stores this early,? Jennifer Stasiak said at Chicago?s popular Oakbrook Center. Miguel Flores, 43, an overnight security guard, visited a Target in Manhattan after his shift ended. ?I mostly shop online but decided to drop in because I haven?t been to a store in a long time,? Flores said. J.C. Penney climbed 0.6 percent and Wal-Mart Stores Inc edged higher. Amazon.com Inc closed up 2.6 percent at a record high. Target Corp did not fare as well, with analysts noting that it closed its stores for several hours overnight while many rivals kept their doors open. Its shares fell 2.8 percent. Not what it used to be The period between the US Thanksgiving holiday and Christmas can make or break a retailer, accounting for as much as 40 percent of annual revenue. More people picked up deals online and the traditional Black Friday rush was split by stores opening the night before. Godiva gave out free chocolates, while Sephora offered face masks and perfumes. Dancers entertained Bergdorf Goodman shoppers, according to the New York Post. The deepest Black Friday discounts included more than $200 off some Best Buy TVs, all bras across Victoria?s Secret Pink stores for $25, half-price video games at Target, and $50 off PlayStation 4 Pro gaming consoles at Wal-Mart. In Pearland, Texas ? a suburb of Houston ? Derrell Felix, 56, had her eye on a Sharp 50-inch LED flat screen TV for $179, down from its original price of $499. ?I know they only have 20 of them in there so I?m hoping they have some left by the time I get in,? she said. There were some signs of the chaos for which Black Friday is traditionally known. A false report of gunfire caused shoppers to evacuate the Westland Mall in Hialeah, Florida. Stores reopened less than an hour later, Silvio Pera ? a mall security supervisor ? told Reuters by phone. The Riverchase Galleria outside Birmingham, Alabama, said police broke up a fight on Thursday night between two women who might have been trying to get the same sale item in a store. The mall shut about 15 minutes early. A continued switch to online shopping, led by Amazon, has forced chains such as Toys R Us, apparel retailers True Religion, the Limited, Rue 21, and off-price retailer Payless Shoe Source to file for bankruptcy this year. Despite the explosive online growth, traditional retailers still earn the bulk of their revenue from in-store buys. Shoppers in brick-and-mortar stores can also be easier to tempt with impulse or add-on purchases than online browsers. Thursday Night, Cyber Monday Amazon began touting its sales for Cyber Monday on Friday and said shoppers using its digital assistant Alexa could score deals on Sunday. Wal-Mart, Target, Macy?s, J.C. Penney, and others opened stores on Thursday evening and most have been offering extended deals online. Some started offering in-store deals earlier this week. Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey, was crowded but not chaotic. Shoppers came for deals with nothing specific in mind. Many enjoyed the experience of trying on clothes rather than shopping online. A Macy?s employee at the mall said it was less busy on Friday because the store had been open, and packed, on Thursday. ?They?re all online,? said Sarah Jones, 42, an employee at Roosevelt Field Mall on Long Island. ?I?ve worked in retail my whole life, trust me.?

  18. Photo: File LONDON: Pervasive online abuse and harassment pressure women and girls into censoring themselves on social media and fuel gender-based discrimination and violence, rights groups said. About one in four women in Britain, the United States and six other countries said in a survey they had experienced online abuse or harassment. More than 40% said the online abuse made them fear for their physical safety and more than half reported trouble sleeping, loss of self-esteem and panic attacks after the incidents, according to rights group Amnesty International. About a third stopped expressing their opinions online or withdrew from public conversations as a result, Amnesty said. ?It?s no secret that misogyny and abuse are thriving on social media platforms, but this poll shows just how damaging the consequences of online abuse are,? said Amnesty researcher Azmina Dhrodia. ?This is not something that goes away when you log off.? Online harassment starts at a young age and may be more common for girls and teenagers than adults, according to UK-based child rights group Plan International. Nearly half of girls aged 11-18 in the UK said they had experienced abuse or harassment on social media, Plan found in a survey earlier this year. Like women, most of the girls said they stopped sharing opinions or otherwise changed their online behaviour out of fear, according to Plan. ?Very young girls are learning that they need to take responsibility for harassment and abuse,? Kerry Smith of Plan told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. ?What they are saying is that they are holding themselves back.? Parents, teachers and police often respond to online abuse by taking away girls? phones or telling them to go offline, which teaches victims that they are responsible for the problem, Smith said. Online harassment, including crude comments on pictures or sexual references, teaches boys that it is okay to treat girls as sexual objects and to exercise power over them, which can lead to physical abuse and rape, she added. Social media attacks are so common for female politicians that they deter women from running for office around the world, advocates and female lawmakers have said. Companies and governments need to step up to make the internet a safe space for girls and women, campaigners said. ?Social media companies have a responsibility... to ensure that women using their platforms are able to do so freely and without fear,? said Amnesty?s Dhrodia.
  19. Swipe right, then swipe left, swipe right and then perhaps left again at every (un)attractive man who claims to be a 'sapiosexual' or a self proclaimed 'gym/fitness freak'. This activity was becoming too recreational for me after a heavy day of work, post a bad break up. It had been a while since the great 'paradigm shift' in my life and I wasn't getting any younger (or so I thought) and I took to online dating like how Piranhas take to flesh (for the lack of a better analogy). Days tuned to nights but the swipes just remained in the realms of virtuality, like that was their rightful place. © Thinkstock/Getty Images I am an old school romantic and I believe the current dating trend is ruining our chances of finding 'everlasting love'. There is a sudden urgency to get someplace in life and move on to associations with one swipe and forget everything else love stood for in that mere moment. It was all alien to me but as I mentioned before I took to a particular dating app quite relentlessly where the success rate for the app was determined by how attractive people looked in their pictures. I also realised people who were a bit too callous in their usage of colloquial English had super chances of 'hooking up'. So words like romance, everlasting or even love for that matter, didn't fathom in their virtual dictionary. It all boiled down to a fast-paced association and I began to see why our generation lacks the semblance of unconditional love and romance altogether. © Thinkstock/Getty Images I am a product of some tough everlasting love. My parents met in another city where dating was seen as a forlorn endeavour and matrimonial advances were at its peak. There was literally no 'let's go grab a few drinks' kinda scenario. If you like the girl, you take her home and make babies with her. A bit rebellious in her belief, my mother was a staunch and independent romantic at heart and certainly wanted her part of the bargain to be played right. But before she could enter this vicious gambit, my father took one look at her and fell head over heels in love. There was no looking back from there. They long distanced their way through the relationship, by making STD calls to each other every week and within three months, they were happily married. © Thinkstock/Getty Images The struggle was still real when they got married. My dad took upon an offshore job and was away most times while my mother spent her time writing letters to him about her life back home. The letters became a real source of inspiration for me and I grew up trying to preserve the sanctity of 'everlasting love'. Today, 35 years later after my parents first met, I am still trying to gather a sense of romance that has now ceased to exist. The hope to meet men organically is slowly diminishing and apps are still showing their keen existence on my phone. I sometimes feel jaded knowing that love has become too cavalier for our generation and everything is based out of an option, while dismissing and dispensing the one at hand, in a matter of a minute or a snap judgement. We don't seek love anymore, we seek an alternative to something we give up on; to satisfy the empty and hollow egos we feed through these dating apps. © Thinkstock/Getty Images Dating apps are now dark and dingy spaces where we venture to seek quick validations about the illusion we create for the world outside of our sphere. This may fill the spontaneous void we create within ourselves but in the long haul, we're always going to be lurking behind thick ghastly shadows of unfulfilling associations. Meanwhile, these apps serve as good fodder for a boring dull weekend and half baked indulgence and are here to stay for sure. But I hope and pray there will be a time where we will let go of these apps from our phones one day and maybe, just maybe fall in love organically and stay there forever, just like how the generation before us did.
  20. Co-Founder and CEO of Vivaldi, Jon Von Tetzchner, poses for a photo during the Web Summit, Europe's biggest tech conference, in Lisbon, Portugal, November 9, 2017. Photo: Reuters LISBON: People should worry about online data collection by technology companies because it gives them unparalleled insight into users lives, the creator of one of the biggest web browsers, Opera, said on Thursday. Jon von Tetzchner said the situation was already comparable to George Orwell?s dystopian novel ?1984?, since ?everyone is being followed and everyone?s information is being collected?. Lack of awareness of the amount of data harvested is ?a perfect storm of a really bad idea,? he told Reuters at the Web Summit conference in Lisbon. Von Tetzchner created Opera in 1996 and is now promoting his new browser, Vivaldi, that he says better addresses privacy concerns. Opera gained 350 million users and prominence in the mobile market but he left it in 2011 because he disagreed with the browser?s sale to a Chinese consortium. He has since launched Vivaldi, which includes functions he says bigger browsers lack. Vivaldi.net does not track searches and is based on an online community of users who recommend features, he said. It now has about a million users but von Tetzchner said it had an ?exponential growth rate? and the company will soon launch a mobile browser. Google dominates the online advertisement market and it closed Vivaldi?s advertising account. Google partnered Opera before launching the Chrome browser in 2008. ?I really wish these companies would behave,? von Tetzchner said, adding that a free internet was ?more important in the bigger picture.? He said he was increasingly concerned about data collection and tracking by tech giants like Google and Facebook. Last year?s US election showed that users can be targeted with differentiated adverts amid evidence that Russia may have manipulated the vote with political adverts on Facebook. Von Tetzchner said the next step could be a broader propaganda war.
  21. We are all privy to the latest dating trends now that are defining relationships a bit more strategically. And now, along with these trends, there is a rise of emerging class of internet predators, who seek attention through fabricating information and scamming their way into online romantic relationships. We're not kidding! And if you haven't been a target yet, you're really lucky! This trend is commonly known as 'catfishing' and it's what's been breaking hearts for a while now. Catfishers usually target the meek and vulnerable and those who have gullible traits. There are various degrees of being catfished and there isn't really a marker on how far an internet impostor will go to catfish you, to have his or her fun! It could be a light, breezy white lie or someone who promises you a future and completely disappears. Picture this: You meet this beautiful girl online on a dating site. You two really hit it off and start chatting. Chatting turns to deciding to meet on a date. You guys go out, have a wonderful evening, She opens up to you about her family, her past and everything else she wants in the future. You guys start to like each other and start spending a considerable amount of time together. Then you date and things start to become serious. You talk about a probable future and she's already talking about introducing you to her parents and you can't wait! And one day, she disappears. No phone calls, no texts, no sign of her! You are left wondering what happened and before you know it, you find out somehow, she's married! That my friend is the classic, brutal way to catfish someone. Well, most cases are not so extreme. Sometimes fibbing online to get attention from the opposite *** is also catfishing. It may seem harmless but it's posing as someone you really aren't at the end of the day. We took the liberty to ask a few men about their online dating experiences and if they were ever catfished by someone and majority of the men had ACTUAL experiences with catfishers! Here's what they had to say. 1. The 'Already Taken' I met someone on Tinder who was single. We hit it off and started chatting and I really enjoyed our conversations till I asked a common friend about her, who told me she was married! I was lucky to have found out right then and there. - Anonymous, 30 (c)Giphy 2. The 'I Don't Eat Meat' Variety This girl I met on tinder was all about 'loving animals' and she said she was a complete dog person. She even had a selfie with a dog, who I assumed was hers. When we eventually met, I figured she was actually scared of dogs. I have three dogs at home and she refused to enter my house. So much for 'loving animals'! She obviously lied. - Karan, 30 (c)Giphy 3. The 'I don't Really Exist' Girl This girl I met on a dating site was damn pretty and I kept thinking how lucky I am to be swiped right by her. We had some real conversations too. We would talk about our interests and I kept thinking how such a pretty girl is still single. So I did some research to calm my brain down. So I Google searched her pictures and it turned out that there were a few more profiles with this girls picture on it, which obviously meant she was using someone else's picture. I confronted her about the same and she unmatched me! - Mayank, 23 (c)Giphy 4. The 'Sympathy Seeker' I was once talking to this girl online who used to gain sympathy from men by telling them she lost her last boyfriend to a car crash. I fell for her act too. She would tell them how deplorable her living conditions are and she's financially unstable and she got men to actually pay for her bills and shopping etc. All that was obviously a farce and she was just pulling a fast one to get attention and money! - Gagan, 33 (c)Giphy 5. The'Idenity Theif' I have never been a victim of catfishing but I knew some guy in college who used to fake being a woman to talk to other women, on social media. I think he needed help! - Rohit, 26 (c)Giphy 6. The 'Fake Vixen' I met this girl on Tinder who was all out there with her sexuality. She posted pictures which indicated that she's on tinder just for *** and wanted to obviously give out that mysterious 'sexy' girl vibe. I fell for it obviously. She was playing hard to get from the get go and it took me a long time to agree on meeting up. I obviously wanted to just hook up. Turns out, not only was the woman very prudish where *** was concerned but she turned out to be a virgin too! She was just creating a wrong image about herself on Tinder all this while and I can't still figure why! - Anonymous, 27 (c)Giphy 7. The 'Identity Crisis' Girl I met this woman on Tinder who was an airhostess. I've always wanted to hook up with one so I started chatting her up. She used to keep stalling me telling me she's flying out and won't be back a while etc. and I would obviously believe her. A few weeks into meeting her, my company was doing a CSR programme with this NGO and it turned out this woman was the programme officer with the NGO! I was a bit taken aback. I mean, I would love to hook up with an NGO worker too! I don't know why she lied! - Gaurav, 32 (c)Giphy There are obviously many more men who get catfished by women everyday. We still haven't come across a major catfish debauchery yet but even these small fabrications count! Well, it's not just women who catfish, men do it too but women usually lie about their profession, marital status, sexual inclinations etc on online dating sites and men obviously fall for it. Make sure you have all the facts in hand before you take the next step with a probable catfisher! If you've been catfished, do tell us about it in the comment section and before you know it, we'll be back with 'how you can avoid being catfished'! Watch this space.
  22. Amazon.com Inc launched a cash payment service in Mexico on Tuesday, aiming to expand its customer base in a country where shoppers are wary of credit card fraud and often earn their living in paper currency. The strategy could also help it to win market share from rival Wal-Mart de Mexico, known as Walmex, along with other retailers pushing Mexican consumers to shop more online instead of brick-and-mortar stores that still dominate the country?s retail sector. ?It will intensify the competition of e-commerce in Mexico, not just for Amazon and Walmex but for other players,? said Luis Willard, an analyst at brokerage GBM. Amazon is the third-largest online retailer in Mexico, according to market research firm Euromonitor International. It has grown swiftly since debuting its Mexico-based website for physical goods two years ago. Still, Amazon?s 2016 Mexico sales of $253 million were well behind the market leader, Argentina?s MercadoLibre Inc, and only slightly above Walmex?s online revenues. The cash service aims to attract new customers and give existing shoppers an alternative to credit and debit cards, said Fernando Ramirez, product manager for Amazon Mexico. ?I think there could be a population of new clients that would use this as their primary form of payment,? he said. Although Amazon has accepted cash on delivery in India since launching there in 2013, pre-paying cash is a relatively new concept that the company launched for the first time in the United States in April, followed by Britain in August. In Mexico, shoppers can deposit between 100 pesos ($5.20) and 5,000 pesos per transaction at several convenience store chains throughout Mexico, including 7-Eleven, placing up to 10,000 pesos a day into Amazon accounts online. The service is not offered at Oxxo convenience stores, which compete with 7-Eleven in Mexico and accept cash for MercadoLibre shoppers. Ramirez said Amazon aims to expand its network, but declined to comment on whether Oxxo would be included. Banorte analyst Valentin Mendoza said Amazon?s cash strategy showed it recognizes the challenge of attracting customers in a culture that has resisted online shopping. ?They?re trying to pivot to compete in a much more effective way,? he said. Mexico is also on Amazon?s radar as it searches for a location for its second North American headquarters. The retailer said on Monday it had received 238 bids, including proposals from the states of Chihuahua, Hidalgo and Queretaro.
