  1. Police investigators search for evidence following a gun attack on the headquarters of Greece's socialist Pasok party in central Athens, Greece, November 6, 2017. REUTERS/Costas Baltas ATHENS: Two gunmen fired a round of shots at the headquarters of Greece?s socialist Pasok party in central Athens on Monday, causing no injuries but slightly damaging a nearby clothing store, police said. The shots were fired about an hour before a televised debate among candidates to lead the broader socialist alliance. ?There were about 30 people inside the party?s headquarters when at least four shots were fired. Two men were seen leaving the scene on a motorbike,? a police official said. A police officer on duty had seen an assailant pointing a gun at him but managed to take cover, the official said, suggesting the gunmen were not targeting the party but the police outside. Pasok has often been the target of violent attacks in the past and its current leader Fofi Gennimata blamed the government for not taking action to prevent this. ?We have repeatedly been the target of attacks,? Gennimata told Skai TV. ?We have repeatedly warned the citizens protection minister in the past.? In January, attackers shot at riot police guarding the Pasok offices, slightly wounding one officer. The leftist-led government condemned the attack.

  3. Update [01:55 AM PST]: Local police took one person into custody late Saturday night in Nîmes, France; the person is reported to have been in possession of a non-lethal, alarm gun in his backpack. Update [01:46 AM PST]: Police confirmed no shots have been fired at the Nimes train station following a response to reports of armed men storming the area, sources said. While law enforcement agencies at present say the reports were unfounded, one person has been detained for "other reasons" following "suspicious activity". It is to be noted that there are no reports of any casualties at present. Initial reporting [01:20 AM PST]: Three armed men stormed a train at the Nîmes station in France, sources revealed. Reports indicated that people in the area heard shots being fired at the station and that three men allegedly exited the train afterwards. Local police have advised people to steer clear of the area surrounding the train station where gunshots were reportedly heard and which has been evacuated. However, law enforcement agencies ? which were called to the scene after an emergency call ? declined such reports.

  5. This video grab image ? obtained July 25, 2017, courtesy of the US Navy ? shows an IRGCN boat heading towards the USS Thunderbolt in the Gulf. AFP/US Navy/Handout WASHINGTON: A US Navy patrol ship fired warning shots Tuesday at an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps boat in the Persian Gulf as it closed in on the American vessel, officials said. The shots were fired after the Iranian vessel came to within 150 yards of the USS Thunderbolt and failed to respond to repeated attempts to reach it via radio, then ignored warning flares and a series of blasts on the US ship's whistle, the Navy said in a statement. "The Iranian vessel's actions were not in accordance with the internationally recognised? 'rules of the road' nor internationally recognised maritime customs, creating a risk for collision," the statement read, noting that the Iranians had conducted an "unsafe and unprofessional" interaction. The incident occurred at about 3:00 AM local time (0500 PST) in the northern Persian Gulf. After the US ship fired the warning shots, the Iranian vessel stopped, officials said, at which point the Thunderbolt continued on her way. The episode marks the latest in a series of close encounters between US ships and Iranian naval vessels. In January, the USS Mahan destroyer fired warning shots at four Iranian Revolutionary Guard vessels that approached at high speed in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps is a paramilitary force that answers directly to the Islamic republic's supreme leader. The force's boats periodically approach US warships in international waters and the Strait of Hormuz, ignoring US radio messages and giving little indication of their intentions. In January 2016, the Iranians briefly captured the crew of two small US patrol boats that strayed into Iranian waters. The 10 US sailors were released 24 hours later. Tuesday's incident comes as the US Congress votes on a new sanctions bill against Russia. The measure also includes sanctions against Iran and the IRGC navy ? which stands accused of supporting terrorism ? and North Korea, for its missile tests.
  6. A US Navy ship fired warning shots when an Iranian vessel in the Gulf came within 150 yards (137 meters) on Tuesday in the first such incident since President Donald Trump took office in January, a US official told Reuters. The last major incident was earlier in January, though there have been other instances when a US vessel fired a flare and another event in March when a US Navy ship was forced to change course after multiple fast-attack vessels from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard came too close. The US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the USS Thunderbolt fired the warning shots after the Iranian vessel approached at a high rate of speed and ignored radio calls, flares and the ship´s whistle. The Thunderbolt was accompanied by several US Coast Guard vessels. The Iranian vessel appeared to be from Iran´s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the official said, adding that it was armed but that the weapons were unmanned. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iranian Foreign Ministry could not immediately be reached for comment. Years of mutual animosity had eased when Washington lifted sanctions on Tehran last year as part of a deal to curb Iran´s nuclear ambitions. But serious differences remain over Iran´s ballistic missile program and conflicts in Syria and Iraq. The Trump administration, which has struck a hard line on Iran, recently declared that Iran was complying with its nuclear agreement with world powers, but warned that Tehran was not following the spirit of the accord and that Washington would look for ways to strengthen it. During the presidential campaign last September, Trump vowed that any Iranian vessels that harass the US Navy in the Gulf would be "shot out of the water." Such incidents occur occasionally. In January, a US Navy destroyer fired three warning shots at four Iranian fast-attack vessels near the Strait of Hormuz after they closed in at high speed and disregarded repeated requests to slow down.

  8. NEW YORK: Shots were fired inside New York City's Bronx Lebanon hospital on Friday, and police said a short time later that one suspect was dead, while local media reported several people ? including at least three doctors ? were wounded in the gunfire. Few details were immediately available about the incident from official sources. The New York Times ? citing information furnished by an unnamed city Fire Department official ? reported that three physicians had been shot, though their conditions were unknown. As least one of the wounded doctors was being treated by people inside the hospital who fashioned a tourniquet from an emergency fire hose, according to the official, the Times said. As many as five or six people may have been wounded, the Times said, citing a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Police had yet to secure the area, preventing emergency medical workers from entering, the Times said. Police swarmed the hospital searching for an assailant, the New York Daily News said. CBS News reported that the gunman, believed to be a former hospital employee, had a rifle and had barricaded himself inside the building. New York Police Department spokesman Peter Donald posted a message a short time later on Twitter, saying, "One shooter is deceased at the hospital." It was not immediately clear whether police were looking for any other suspects. On Twitter, the New York Police Department told members of the public to avoid the area around the hospital, located in the borough of the Bronx at 1650 Grand Concourse. An official who answered the phone at the hospital said she had no immediate information.
