According to the British newspaper, 'The Sun', the 2011 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee had booked the entire New York zoo for a private tour for his then wife Robin Givens and himself in the late 1980's as a date. Their 'us' time was however interrupted by a big silverback gorilla who was bullying all the other monkeys present in and around the alpha ape's cage. “When we got to the gorilla cage there was one big silverback gorilla there just bullying all the other gorillas. They were so powerful but their eyes were like an innocent infant,” Tyson told The Sun. “I offered the attendant $10,000 (Rs. 7.1 lakh approx.) to open the cage and let (me) smash that silverback's snotbox! He declined.” Rest assured that no animals were punched that day as the zookeeper refused to take Tyson's money or let him get inside the cage with the beast. The 52-year-old is one of the iconic figures of boxing and was one of the pioneers of American boxing that made the sport so famous in the 80s. Having won back-to-back golds at the 1981 and 1982 Junior Olympics, Tyson won his first big fight against Trevor Berbick in 1986 for his first World Boxing Council (WBC) title. It is more than just four English alphabets scribbled beside the name that makes our heart skip a beat every time it is mentioned. It will catch us by surprise when we are least expecting it, and render us speechless at a moment when we would rather spill our guts out. Plaguing us with an unceasing giddy restlessness and excitement that makes going through our days a torment - made bearable only with the sighting of the person our heart seems to be beating for all of a sudden. Love is called magical simply because when we are in love, we can never be too sure what the next moment could bring to our life - while we stand powerless against its bittersweet onslaught. Varun and Pooja's journey towards love is made up of all that - the good, the bad and the ugly - and their love has come out strong, oh so strong against every test of time. Pooja recalls her first meeting like it was yesterday, “My friend told me about this guy who would be perfect for me and she wanted to set me up with him. I did not pursue it at the time, but one day when I was catching up with an ex, my friend invited Varun there without even telling me. the minute that he walked in, I could not take my eyes off him. I was intrigued to know him more. We just got to talking and started meeting every day.” However, Varun has a different (and may we add more interesting) story to share. “We met through a common friend, rather it was a set up for which I had to coax that friend for a month to introduce me to her”, shares Varun. Now that's some memorable “coincidental” meeting the two had, and while it's pretty clear that they hit it right off from the go, wait till you hear about their first “official” date. (c) Pooja & Varun “I asked him out on a date. We had been talking for a week by then, and I suggested going out for a movie. However, Varun insisted that we went out for coffee instead. I agreed thinking a movie wouldn't give us enough time to talk, but Varun made the suggestion because he felt that a movie date would only last for 3 hours, whereas a coffee date can go on an entire day. I just couldn't stop smiling after that.” Again, the first date was memorable for Varun for a totally different reason. “We went to Barista in Basant Lok Market, and personally it turned into a disaster at the end since I had forgotten to get my wallet.” Their journey only gets better from here on. They went on to date each other for the next 11 years, and sure enough, faced a number of ups and downs during this time. Their courtship had all the elements of a budding romantic relationship, but it was made a little difficult by Pooja's anxiety issues which she never imagined would turn into a full-blown disaster, coupled with panic attacks. (c) Pooja & Varun Recalling the time when she came to face her demon for the first time, Pooja says, “I had been dating Varun for 3 yrs when he decided to get a job in UAE and moved there. This posed as an unbearable change and the loneliness caused my anxiety to become full-blown panic attacks.” The distance took such toll on Pooja's mental well being that she would cry endlessly and began to fall sick. Through it all, Varun was right by her side despite the miles separating them. “He used to call me for long hours at night to calm my panic attacks. He spent half his salary on calling me long distance to pacify my fears. Once he was back, we went through a time where I could not leave my house. I used to feel ill and anxious if I did. Varun and I had our dates at home those days. He used to sit with me and my family. Watch movies all day”, shares Pooja. (c) Pooja & Varun Even when things got difficult, Varun never bailed on Pooja. He stood right beside her like a pillar of strength and helped her fight her battle all the way. Talking about all those moments that Varun made bearable for her, and ultimately helped her to get better, Pooja adds that “There were also times where I could not travel or stay away from home even for a night. Varun also sacrificed those trips with friends so that I wouldn't feel like I was missing out.” Varun decided to help Pooja deal with her reality better, and that's when “he came up with the plan to make me feel comfortable with night stays outside the house and that is when we started taking 1-day trips together. We went to Agra once and I had a severe panic attack there. He stayed awake all night long hugging me while I kept wailing the night away. No questions asked. No words were spoken.” (c) Pooja & Varun This was the moment that changed everything for Pooja. She was willing to give her all to anything that would make her better and stronger as a person. She told us, “when my partner was also missing out on things because of my disability it gave me a purpose to overcome anxiety. What got me better was his constant presence letting me know that he has my back always.” That's not all, Pooja's acknowledgement and gratitude is proof that when done right, there are lots of ways how a supportive partner and a loving relationship can help someone who is suffering from severe episodes of anxiety. “Varun gave me that space where there was no pressure to be normal. He took my anxious nature as my normal and that just gave me the time to try cognitive therapy and the will to better myself. Now we travel 3 or 4 times a year which was once a dream for me. I am still dealing with it one step at a time but we have made great progress.” (c) Pooja & Varun After 11 years of dating each other, the couple finally got married in 2017, which happens to be their most dear milestone. Pooja shares how the grew as a couple through the years, “we have been through every test of time. From being in a long distance to being in the same city but living far. From seeing each other every day to seeing each other once a week. From accompanying each other for our respective exams to managing to get a degree at the end of it all. From taking risks in life to being scared even to leave the house. From facing panic attacks to going FOR counselling. Every hurdle thrown our way has been faced together with an abundance of patience and we are still moving ahead and dealing with life together.” (c) Pooja & Varun For Varun, Pooja continues to be his biggest cheerleader. Someone he can trust and rely on. He shares that, “When the shit hits the roof, she is the one you need by your side. She is cool as a cucumber under pressure.” Varun also has just one an important to share with all those men who have partners who also suffer from anxiety. “Things become better with patience and perseverance”, quips Varun, and we presume that this along with his love for Pooja must have helped the couple sail through the tough situations and come out as winners in life and as lovers. And I did and am happy to share about it with the intention of it being received with love. As that's the only reason I am posting it. Love for self and gratitude for the universe. The picture might be disturbing for some, but these drains have become my dumbells for a few days. I was detected with DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) in my right breast with high grade malignant cells. Simply put stage 0 cancer/ pre-cancerous stage, with cancer cells multiplying in a contained area. The result I have become a half Indian version of Angelina Jolie (since only one breast was involved)! I told my doctor now is the time to give some competition to the Kardashians since Pamela is passé. But no one listened to me, so now I have a portion of my back tissue in my breast. Perhaps now I can do chin-ups with my breasts! Jokes apart, this obstacle has given me a new definition of life. Respect it's unpredictability and have the faith and courage to be the hero of your own drama of life. The invincible human spirit is God like, gives you the courage to endure and the will to revive. There is nothing that human spirit can't do. Also I want women of all ages to be aware. I am 35, and I was returned twice over from a mammogram. If any symptoms come up, think of it as a protective force and get yourselves examined. Also we are so obsessed with boobs. This mastectomy has left me with even more self love! Big, small, left or right inclined , gravity pulling or defying, or even none, each breast the presence or lack of it has a story to tell. Mine has made me a 2.0 version of myself! There have been days when I've been so exhausted and in so much pain that even lifting a finger hurt. I feel like sometimes it's a cycle… one that starts off with physical pain and leads to mental and emotional pain. The bad days have been many… Post chemo, post-surgery and the like… where even just laughing hurts. Sometimes it felt like it took everything I've had to push past it… a minute to minute battle with myself. I got through it knowing that even though I was fighting a long drawn out, draining battle… it was one that was worth the fight. It's important to remember that we're allowed to have those bad days. Forcing yourself to be happy and cheerful all the time serves no purpose. Who are we being fake and putting on an act for? I allowed myself to cry, to feel the pain, to indulge in self-pity… for a short while. Only you know what you're going through and it is fine to accept it. Emotions aren't wrong. Feeling negative emotions isn't wrong. But after a point, identify it, recognize it and refuse to let it control your life. It takes an immense amount of self-care to get out of that zone. Sleep always helps, or having my favourite smoothie after chemo, or just talking to my son. For now, as my treatment continues… my visual focus remains to just get better and get back home. WhatsApp will now start limiting users to forwarding a message only five times, in yet another attempt to curb down on the spread of misinformation. WhatsApp users on Android and iOS will no longer be able to forward messages to more than five individuals or groups. © Reuters The spread of misinformation has been a matter of concern for a couple of years, after multiple elections have been suspected to be swung using fake news. With the upcoming General Elections in India, WhatsApp has been under immense pressure to reduce the malicious spread. We've already witnessed multiple incidents of mob lynching based on fake news and in the end, there's hardly any accountability. © TIME WhatsApp says that the decision to limit forward messages to five chats has been taken globally after evaluating user feedback. WhatsApp released a plethora of ads to make users more aware and cautious towards the spread of fake news. The app previously allowed up to 20 forwards per message. Messages can still be forwarded to groups, with each group including up to 256 people. The company says the measures reduced forwarding by 25 per cent globally and more than that in India, which had one of the highest forwarding rates in the world. © BCCL In an update to its blog, WhatsApp said the move will help keep "WhatsApp focused on private messaging with close contacts." A text message that has been forwarded to a new recipient is marked as forwarded in a light grey text but otherwise appears indistinguishable from an original message sent by a contact. The app's end-to-end encryption allows groups of hundreds of users to exchange texts, photos and video beyond the purview of independent fact checkers or even the platform itself. Over the years, prominent names of LGBT activists such as Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, Harish Iyer et al. have become common knowledge, but there is one name that remained little-known, and that is of Siddharth Gautam, who became the face of India's first collective activism for LGBT rights, powered by AIDS Bhedbhav Virodhi Andolan (ABVA). © siddharthagautam But we know life is not always fair and decides to come at us unbeknownst. In 1992, India lost one of its prominent gay rights heroes at the tender age of 28. Siddharth did not live to see his fight come to fruition or celebrate it with his fellow other members and friends at ABVA. All About Siddharth Gautam Siddharth was a lawyer and a social activist who held degrees from Yale and Cambridge Universities. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma when he was a teenager and suffered from this cancer throughout his short life.
