  1. John F. Kennedy WASHINGTON: The US government on Thursday released a mammoth, long-awaited trove of secret files on the assassination of president John F. Kennedy, but withheld others for further review on national security grounds. In a statement, the National Archives said that on orders from President Donald Trump it had released 2,891 records related to the November 22, 1963 slaying of JFK in Dallas, Texas. Kennedy scholars have said the documents were unlikely to contain any bombshell revelations or put to rest the rampant conspiracy theories about the assassination. One of the documents included a transcript of a November 24, 1963 conversation with J. Edgar Hoover, who was FBI director at the time. Hoover said the FBI informed police of a threat against the life of Lee Harvey Oswald the night before Oswald was killed. But police did not act on it, Hoover said. The Warren Commission, which investigated the shooting of the charismatic Kennedy, 46, determined that Oswald, a former Marine sharpshooter, carried out the Kennedy assassination acting alone. The released files are vast in number and scope, covering everything from FBI directors´ memos to interviews with members of the public in Dallas who came forward trying to provide clues after that singularly unforgettable moment in US history. Some date into the 1970s and included handwritten official notes which are hard to read. Trump said in a memorandum he had agreed to hold back for further review some records relating to the killing. Administration officials who requested anonymity said the majority of those requests had come from the Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation. "Executive departments and agencies have proposed to me that certain information should continue to be redacted because of national security, law enforcement, and foreign affairs concerns," Trump said. "I have no choice -- today -- but to accept those redactions rather than allow potentially irreversible harm to our nation´s security," he said. Trump gave agencies six months -- until April 26, 2018 -- to make their case for why the remaining documents should not be made public. "At the end of that period, I will order the public disclosure of any information that the agencies cannot demonstrate meets the statutory standard for continued postponement of disclosure," he said. Full and unredacted The 2,891 records approved for release are viewable on the National Archives website, in full and unredacted form. "The president wants to ensure that there is full transparency here," an official said, but "there does remain sensitive information in the records." This includes, for example, the identities of informants and "activities that were conducted with the support of foreign partner organizations, either intelligence or law enforcement," the official said. The Warren Commission´s formal conclusion that Oswald killed JFK has done little to quell speculation that a more sinister plot was behind the murder of the 35th US president. The Warren Commission which investigated the shooting of Kennedy determined that it was carried out by a former Marine sharpshooter, Lee Harvey Oswald Hundreds of books and movies such as the 1991 Oliver Stone film "JFK" have fed the conspiracy industry, pointing the finger at Cold War rivals the Soviet Union or Cuba, the Mafia and even Kennedy´s vice president, Lyndon Johnson. The release of the documents is in compliance with an October 26, 1992 act of Congress which required that the assassination records held in the National Archives be released in full and unredacted 25 years later. Kennedy assassination experts eagerly awaited the opportunity to look at the files but sought to tamp down expectations. Gerald Posner, author of "Case Closed," which determined that Oswald did indeed act alone, said people who think the files will "have the solution to the case that everybody can settle on" are going to be disappointed. "No one´s going to abandon their belief in a conspiracy because the release of the files doesn´t prove it," Posner told AFP. "They´ll just say it must have been destroyed or hidden." Experts agreed, however, that the documents may shed some light on an intriguing chapter in Oswald´s life -- his trip to Mexico City about seven weeks before the slaying where he is known to have met with Cuban and Soviet spies. The CIA and FBI may be blocking the release of certain documents to hide their own failings, said Larry Sabato, a professor of politics at the University of Virginia and the author of "The Kennedy Half Century." "They had every indication that Oswald was a misfit and a sociopath," he said. But neither agency informed the Secret Service, which is charged with protecting the president, he said. Oswald defected to the Soviet Union in 1959 but returned to the United States in 1962. He was shot to death two days after killing Kennedy by a nightclub owner, Jack Ruby, as he was being transferred from the city jail.
  2. WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said Saturday he will allow long blocked secret files on the assassination of John F Kennedy to be opened to the public for the first time. The November 22, 1963, assassination -- an epochal event in modern US history -- has spawned multiple theories challenging the official version that Kennedy was killed by a lone gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald. So the release of all the secret documents has been eagerly anticipated by historians and conspiracy theorists alike. Trump's announcement followed reports that not all the files would be released, possibly to protect still relevant intelligence sources and methods. But Trump appears to have decided otherwise. "Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long-blocked and classified JFK FILES to be opened," he said in the tweet. The files are due to be opened in their entirety Thursday nearly 54 years after Kennedy´s assassination in Dallas -- unless the US president decides otherwise. Millions of classified Kennedy files have been made public under a 1992 law passed in response to a surge in public demand for disclosure in the wake of Oliver Stone´s conspiracy-heavy movie on the assassination. But the law placed a 25-year hold on a small percentage of the files that expires October 26. Some reports put the number withheld at 3,100. Tens of thousands of files that had been released with portions blacked out are also set to be fully declassified. Traumatic turning point Kennedy was only the fourth US president to be cut down by an assassin's bullets, and his death at age 46 proved a traumatic turning point as the United States headed into a period of turbulence over civil rights and the Vietnam War. The shocking images of Jacqueline Kennedy cradling her mortally wounded husband in the back of an open presidential limousine froze the moment in the public consciousness. A ten-month investigation led by Supreme Court chief justice Earl Warren concluded that Oswald, a former Marine who had lived in the Soviet Union, acted alone when he fired on Kennedy's motorcade, hitting the president with two shots, one through the upper back and the other in the head. Oswald, arrested two hours later after murdering a Dallas police officer, was shot to death two days later by nightclub owner Jack Ruby as he was being transferred from the city jail. The Warren commission´s finding was challenged in 1979 by a special House investigative committee that concluded Kennedy was "probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy" and there were likely two shooters. Trump's conspiracy theory A welter of conspiracy theories have arisen over the years, variously blaming Fidel Castro, the Mafia, the KGB, Lyndon Johnson and the CIA. Oliver Stone's controversial 1991 movie "JFK" managed to implicate Johnson, the Mafia and the CIA. Trump himself tapped into the public fascination with the case during last year's presidential campaign, bizarrely linking Republican rival Senator Ted Cruz´s father to the Kennedy assassination. "His father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald´s being -- you know, shot," Trump said in a May 2016 telephone interview with Fox News. "I mean, what was he doing -- what was he doing with Lee Harvey Oswald shortly before the death? Before the shooting?" Trump continued. "It´s horrible." Cruz called the accusation "nuts." "Yes, my dad killed JFK, he is secretly Elvis, and Jimmy Hoffa is buried in his backyard," he said sarcastically, speaking to reporters at a campaign event in Indiana. Democratic congressman Adam Schiff recalled that history Saturday, retweeting Trump´s announcement and asking "does this mean Ted Cruz's father will be exposed?"
  3. Zubair Khan claims that Salman threatened him that he would not be able to work in the industry anymore once he leaves the house. Photo: File The eleventh season of the biggest Indian reality show, Bigg Boss, is back and it is as entertaining as ever. Spoiler ahead! A participant who was evicted from the house this week has filed a police complaint against the host of the show, Salman Khan, reports Times of India. Amid all the bickering, arguments, and abusing in the house, rumours are abuzz that a participant who was evicted from the house this week has filed a police complaint against the host of the show, superstar Salman Khan, reports Times Of India. The complaint has been registered at one of the police stations in Mumbai. Zubair Khan claims that Salman threatened him that he would not be able to work in the industry anymore once he leaves the house. According to the complaint, Salman made statements like ?I will make you my dog. Will see you after you leave the home.? So, we are giving you a heads up for a spoiler ahead, just in case you have still not watched the episode! It is not uncommon for Salman to lose his cool during the elimination weekend, and it was no different this time with Zubair in the first elimination weekend, Weekend Ka Vaar, that aired on October 9. Zubair?s frequent use of inappropriate language in the house, especially against women was apparently the reason behind Salman?s attitude and behaviour. The film star threatened people to not tick him off ?as he could be dangerous.? The contestant, who claims to have a connection with Dawood Ibrahim?s family, left the show on Sunday morning due to health issues. Bigg Boss had called him in the confession room and he was later sent out with doctors. While Salman said that Zubair was recovering, it was only by the end of the show that he announced that the participant got evicted due to a lower number of votes in comparison to other nominations.

Photo: Geo News LAHORE: The Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) has moved the Lahore High Court against the Punjab government?s failure to release the judicial inquiry report into the Model Town killings despite court orders. The petition has made Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif, Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, Chief Secretary Zahid Saeed and Home Secretary Azam Suleman respondents in the case. The petition states that the LHC had asked that the report be made public but implementation on court orders has not been done yet. PAT protests outside Civil Secretariat, demands release of Model Town report PAT leader Khurram Nawaz Gandapur said with LHC?s decision, home secretary is now bound to handover the judicial commission report LHC on Thursday ordered the Punjab government to make public the judicial inquiry report into the Model Town killings. The order was read out by Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi while hearing a petition by the families of those injured in the 2014 clashes with police in Lahore to make the inquiry report public. The Punjab government in response filed on Thursday an intra-court appeal in LHC against the decision of a single-bench to make public the report. Sanaullah confirmed the filing of the appeal on Friday. The appeal states that as the matter is under review by a full-bench of the high court, the decision of the single-bench should be dismissed. Earlier, it was reported that a full bench of the court will hear all the petitions on the Model Town tragedy on September 25. Punjab govt files appeal against LHC order to release Model Town report Appeal states that single-bench order should be dismissed as matter under review of full bench A three-member bench of LHC headed by interim Chief Justice Yawar Ali will hear the different cases demanding the Model Town judicial report to be made public. Us Inc, the largest US toy store chain, filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday, the latest sign of turmoil in the retail industry caught in a viselike grip of online shopping and discount chains. Toys ?R? Us said it received a commitment for over $3 billion in debtor-in-possession financing from lenders including a JPMorgan-led bank syndicate and certain of the company?s existing lenders. The new financing, subject to court approval, is expected to immediately improve the company?s financial health and support its ongoing operations during the court-supervised process, Toys ?R? Us said. The company?s Canadian unit intends to seek protection in parallel proceedings under the Companies? Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Toys ?R? Us said in a statement. The retailer?s operations outside of the United States and Canada, including about 255 licensed stores and joint venture partnerships in Asia, which are separate entities, are not part of the Chapter 11 filing and CCAA proceedings, Toys ?R? Us said. The filing is among the largest ever by a specialty retailer and casts doubt over the future of the company?s nearly 1,600 stores and 64,000 employees. It comes just as Toys ?R? Us is gearing up for the holiday shopping season, which accounts for the bulk of its sales. Toys ?R? Us filed the petition in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia.
  8. ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has filed another review petition against the Panama case verdict in the Supreme Court, requesting that the apex court overturn the July 28 verdict. The petition argues that the petitions filed by Sheikh Rasheed, Imran Khan and Siraj-ul-Haq did not mention FZE Capital and Nawaz was disqualified over a matter which was not included in the petitions. According to income tax laws, only an amount which has been received can be termed as salary, the petition further states. Even if the salary is considered receivable, it is still not grounds for disqualification, the petition adds. Nawaz has further argued that Pakistan has forums tackling the issue of non-disclosure of assets and an individual should be provided with an opportunity to defend oneself of the matter goes to the relevant forum. Not drawing a salary and not disclosing it cannot be termed ?dishonesty?. The petition further states that the reservations raised by the PML-N were rejected and directing a trial court to reach a decision in six month time will affect the case. It is further argued in the petition that the law does not allow the monitoring of a probe by a trial court. The court orders are in violation of fundamental rights to a fair trial, says the petition. Earlier. Nawaz had filed three petitions to review the verdict. The petitions had pleaded the apex court to dismiss the petitions filed by Sheikh Rasheed, Imran Khan and Siraj-ul-Haq. Members of the Sharif's family have also challenged the July 28 verdict disqualifying Nawaz and the ordering of corruption probes against the family. The former premier's children, Hasan, Hussain and Maryam, and son-in-law MNA Capt (retd) Safdar submitted on Friday two review pleas in the apex court. Nawaz's disqualification Nawaz was disqualified under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution. Announcing its verdict, the five-member bench unanimously disqualified Nawaz for failing to disclose his un-withdrawn receivables constituting assets from UAE-based Capital FZE in his nominations papers for the 2013 General Election, stating that this meant he was not ?honest? and ?truthful?, as per the Constitution. In the verdict, all five judges ruled to send references against Nawaz Sharif, his children Maryam, Hussain and Hasan, son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar and Ishaq Dar to an accountability court. The court also ordered the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to file a reference against the accused in an accountability court in six weeks and directed for the trial to be wrapped up within six months.
  9. ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has filed a reference against Justice Asif Saeed Khosa in Supreme Judicial Council for calling him Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's loyalist. As per the reference, the speaker has objected over Justice Khosa's remarks made in the April 20 judgment over the Panama case. Sadiq has stated the remarks reflected the judge's bias as none from the bench passed any such statements. The reference, documents of which are available with Geo News, quotes the April 20 judgment, stating Justice Khosa attributed failure on the part of the speaker to enquire into or investigate the matter or to refer the matter to the Election Commission of Pakistan against Nawaz... Moreover, the reference adds, the speaker was elected by majority vote of the House comprising members from both the treasury and opposition benches. Therefore, it reads, to call the speaker a nominee or loyalist of the prime minister was a misstatement and contrary to the facts. In his reference, Sadiq has written that the comments were only made by Justice Khosa and no one else from the bench. "This clearly smacks of personal grudge or bias of the honourable judge." However, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Talal Chaudhry has said no such complaint has been filed yet.
  10. Passengers board a German carrier Air Berlin aircraft at Tegel airport in Berlin, Germany, June 14, 2017. REUTERS/Hannibal Hanschke/Files Air Berlin ? Germany's second-largest airline ? filed for bankruptcy protection on Tuesday after key shareholder Etihad Airways withdrew funding following years of losses, leaving valuable runway slots up for grabs. The move offers Lufthansa and rivals a chance to acquire slots at airports such as Berlin Tegel and Duesseldorf, with Germany's largest airline keen to defend its domestic position against expansion by low-cost rival Ryanair. Lufthansa confirmed it was in talks to take over parts of the business, while a source said easyJet was the second airline referred to by the government as being in talks with Air Berlin. The British budget carrier declined to comment. The insolvency comes with thousands of Germans enjoying summer holidays, and just ahead of a September general election. The German government has granted a bridging loan of 150 million euros ($176 million) to allow Air Berlin to keep its planes in the air for three months and secure the jobs of its 7,200 workers in Germany while negotiations continue. The government said it expected decisions to result from these negotiations in the coming weeks. Lufthansa has already leased Air Berlin planes to provide flights by its Eurowings budget airline and has made no secret of its interest in taking on more of Air Berlin's business while being mindful of the potential obstacles posed by debts and anti-trust issues. "Lufthansa has played a canny waiting game over a number of years and is now well placed to cherry-pick those parts of Air Berlin's operation that suit it best without buying the whole loss-making enterprise," said Jonathan Wober, an analyst at CAPA-Centre for Aviation. Record loss Ryanair said Air Berlin was being prepared for a Lufthansa takeover, which it said would breach competition laws. But German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt said he was confident there would be no anti-trust issues because the business would be sold off in bits. In a statement published after trading hours, the Irish carrier said it had lodged a complaint with the German and European competition authorities regarding "the obvious conspiracy" playing out in Germany over Air Berlin. "This manufactured insolvency is clearly being set up to allow Lufthansa to take over a debt-free Air Berlin, which will be in breach of all known German and EU competition rules," Ryanair's statement said. A spokesperson for the European Commission said it was in "constructive contact" with Germany about the Air Berlin issue. European Union state aid rules allow rescue and restructuring aid to companies that are in financial difficulty, but such aid is subject to strict conditions. Air Berlin, which became famous for its "Mallorca shuttle" services, piled up debt after a series of takeovers and bookings have been hit in recent months by concerns over its finances. It made a net loss in almost every year since 2008 and in 2016 reported a record deficit of 782 million euros ($915 million), equivalent to more than 2 million euros a day. Funding from Etihad Airways, which bought into Air Berlin in 2011, has helped keep it afloat and the Abu Dhabi-based airline provided an additional 250 million euros in April. But Etihad has been reviewing its European investments after they failed to yield the profits expected. Alitalia, another of Etihad's investments, is also in administration and is seeking bidders. Talks between Etihad and TUI, Europe's largest tour operator, about forming a joint venture holiday airline by merging TUIfly with Air Berlin's leisure airline Niki collapsed earlier this year. Shares in Air Berlin last traded down 34 percent at 0.51 euros on Tuesday, valuing the airline at about 60 million euros. Ten years ago the carrier was worth around 1 billion euros. Lufthansa shares were up 4.7 percent at 20.59 euros. Pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) blamed the shortcomings of past management at Air Berlin for its woes and expressed anger with Etihad. "It is a scandal that Etihad is dodging its responsibility and is leaving Air Berlin's staff out in the cold," VC President Ilja Schulz said in a statement.
  11. ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday filed three appeals in the Supreme Court of Pakistan to review the Panama Papers verdict which resulted in Nawaz's disqualification. 12. Farooq Sattar entering in the Sindh High Court to file petition. Photo: Geo News KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement - Pakistan and Pakistan Muslim League? Functional have filed petitions in the Sindh High Court, challenging the new law repealing National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) 1999, The law was twice passed by Sindh Assembly. Separate petitions were filed by PML-F?s Nusrat Sehar Abbasi and MQM leader Farooq Sattar. Speaking to the press, Sattar said that Sindh Assembly and provincial government does not have the authority to repeal NAB ordinance in the province, he called the move an attempt to escape from the corruption cases. ?Many of the NAB cases are against Sindh government, leaders and ministers of Pakistan Peoples Party,? he said. No role of NAB anymore, Sindh govt tells bureaucracy Official letter reiterated that with the new law in effect, NAB will have no role in the province, as it is now mandated to only probe and hear cases related to federal institutions Meanwhile, Sindh High Court has asked the provincial and federal governments to submit their responses on petitions challenging the new law passed by Sindh Assembly, allowing the establishment of provincial accountability commission, in replacement of NAB. The governments have been asked to submit replies by August 16. Meanwhile, in a letter to respective provincial departments, commissioners and deputy commissioners, on Friday the Sindh government has stated that with the revocation of the National Accountability Ordinance 1999 (NAO), all corruption cases, inquiries, and complaints will now be probed by the provincial anti-corruption establishment. The letter reiterated that with the new law in effect, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) will have no role in the province, as it is now mandated to only probe and hear cases related to federal institutions. Earlier, the provincial government officially ended the jurisdiction of the NAO 1999 in the province on August 10. A notification issued by the law ministry directed authorities to print the NAO 1999 repeal bill 2017. On July 3, the Sindh Assembly passed the 'anti-NAB bill', which seeks to revoke NAB?s power in the province. The bill was vehemently opposed by opposition members of the house. Notification repealing NAB Ordinance in Sindh issued Sindh Assembly passed the 'anti-NAB bill' earlier last month The opposition members also staged a walkout from the provincial assembly in protest of the anti-NAB bill. MQM-Pakistan leader Faisal Subzwari, speaking to the media, rejected the bill saying it was an attempt to cover the irregularities carried out by the corrupt. ?We reject this [anti-NAB] bill and will challenge it in the court,? he vowed. Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair refused to sign the bill twice and sent it back along with an objection note to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. Regarding his concerns, Zubair had said that repealing the NAO is against public interest, adding ?it is our responsibility to ensure the elimination of corruption.? CM Sindh stands by anti-NAB bill Repealing National Accountability Ordinance within the jurisdiction of the provincial government: Murad Ali Shah Speaking in the assembly on July 26, the chief minister had addressed the opposition?s reservations regarding the repeal of the law. Shah pointed out that repealing the ordinance in question fell well within the jurisdiction of the provincial government. The commission's chairman, to be nominated by the assembly, would be independent, the chief minister assured. The chairman would put together a committee which would comprise opposition members and the speaker, he added.
  13. PTI leader Dr Yasmin Rashid ISLAMABAD: Dr Yasmin Rashid, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf?s (PTI) candidate for NA-120, on Wednesday filed a petition in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) seeking a ban on the former prime minister?s political activities. The petition, requesting that Nawaz be disqualified from holding any post in any political party, was filed ahead of Nawaz?s rally to his hometown of Lahore from Islamabad via GT Road. Following Nawaz?s disqualification under Article 62 of the Constitution, the opposition has doubled down on its demand that he step down from his continued role in the PML-N. On Tuesday, the ECP issued a notice to the PML-N for the appointment of a new party leader, stating that as per the Political Parties Order 2002, a disqualified lawmaker could not hold any office in a political party. Nawaz to begin GT Road rally shortly The PML-N leader is expected to address party workers, supporters in different cities on the way to Lahore Earlier today, PTI?s Babar Awan slammed the PML-N for the GT Road rally, lamenting that access to schools, colleges and hospitals had been blocked due to arrangements for the rally. ?Entire Punjab has been locked down today. Where is the law over this lockdown?? he questioned, vowing that he would raise questions over the money spent on the rally. Rashid is the PTI candidate for NA-120, the seat left vacant following the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif by the Supreme Court.
  14. SHEIKHUPURA: Police on Wednesday registered a First Information Report (FIR) nominating two underage children for murder and robbery. The two children, accompanied by their parents, reached the local sessions court to attain pre-arrest bail in the case. The FIR states that year and half-old Ayan used an axe in the attack while five year-old Hassan used a stick as a weapon.
  15. WASHINGTON: US House Republicans on Tuesday shot down a legislative effort by Democrats to obtain Treasury Department documents that could show any ties between the finances of President Donald Trump, his inner circle and the Russian government. The bill was rejected amid intense sparring with Democrats openly wondering whether or not Trump, a Republican, is compromised by a foreign power and Republicans dismissing it as a political stunt. Representative Jeb Hensarling, the Republican chair of the House Financial Services Committee that rejected the proposal, said the panel would not be spending any time exploring Trump's financial network. Hensarling cited open investigations by congressional committees and a special counsel into conclusions by US intelligence agencies that Russia interfered in the 2016 election campaign to help New York businessman Trump win. Moscow has denied any meddling and Trump has denied and collusion between his campaign and Russian officials. The bill, known as a "resolution of inquiry," is a rarely used legislative tool that allows Congress to formally request certain documents from the executive branch. But following Tuesday's voice vote in the committee, the bill is not expected to receive consideration by the full House of Representatives. Specifically, the bill sought documents that may have been unearthed by the Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network that could show any ties between Trump's finances and Russia. Democrats on the committee have been trying for months to obtain financial records tied to Trump. In particular, they have pressed for information involving his business dealings with foreign banks, and any potential connection to Moscow. "Clearly we have something afoot in this country that leads right to the top," said Representative Earl Perlmutter, a Democrat. "We need to make sure that this nation isn?t under the thumb of another nation because of financial leverage or whatever it might be." The resolution asked for any records of loans or credit from a number of banks to Trump, and 22 of his closest associates, including family members and top White House and campaign advisers. The banks include Deutsche Bank AG and Russian lenders Sberbank and Gazprombank. Hensarling chided Representative Maxine Waters, the top Democrat on the panel who has called for the president's impeachment, for pushing the bill. He said it was "frankly and regrettably, a procedural tool that is blatantly political of nature and one that I do not necessarily consider to be worthy of debate."
  16. A billboard of Takata Corp in Tokyo in September 2014. Photo: Reuters TOKYO: Japan's Takata Corp, the firm at the centre of the auto industry's biggest ever product recall, filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States and Japan, and said it would be bought for $1.6 billion by US-based Key Safety Systems. In the biggest bankruptcy of a Japanese manufacturer, Takata faces tens of billions of dollars in costs and liabilities resulting from almost a decade of recalls and lawsuits. Its airbags have been linked to at least 17 deaths around the world. TK Holdings, its US operations, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware on Sunday with liabilities of $10 billion to $50 billion, while the Japanese parent filed for protection with the Tokyo District Court early on Monday. Takata's total liabilities stand at 1.7 trillion yen ($15 billion), Tokyo Shoko Research Ltd estimated. Final liabilities would depend on the outcome of discussions with carmaker customers who have borne the bulk of the replacement costs, a lawyer for the company said. The filings open the door to the financial rescue by Key Safety Systems (KSS), a Michigan-based parts supplier owned by China's Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corp. In a deal that took 16 months to hammer out, KSS agreed to take over Takata's viable operations, while the remaining operations will be reorganised to continue churning out millions of replacement airbag inflators, the two firms said. The US company would keep "substantially all" of Takata's 60,000 employees in 23 countries and maintain its factories in Japan. The agreement is meant to allow Takata to continue operating without interruptions and with minimal disruptions to its supply chain. "We believe taking these actions in Japan and the US is the best way to address the ongoing costs and liabilities of the airbag inflator issues with certainty and in an organised manner," Takata CEO Shigehisa Takada said in a statement. Takada said he and top management would resign "when the timing of the restructuring is set." His family ? which still has control of the 84-year-old company ? likely would cease to be shareholders. Jason Luo, president and CEO of KSS, said in a statement the "underlying strength" of Takata's business had not diminished despite the airbag recall, citing its skilled employee base, geographic reach and other safety products such as seat belts. The companies expect to seal definitive agreements for the sale in coming weeks and complete the twin bankruptcy processes in the first quarter of 2018. The filings have, however, not resolved all issues. Honda Motor Co, Takata's biggest customer, said it had reached no final agreement with Takata on responsibilities for the recall. Honda said it would continue talks with the supplier but anticipated difficulties in recovering the bulk of its claims. Unprecedented recalls Takata faces billions in lawsuits and recall-related costs to its clients, including Honda, BMW, Toyota Motor Corp and others which have been paying recall costs to date. It also faces potential liabilities stemming from class action lawsuits in the United States, Canada and other countries. Global transport authorities have ordered about 100 million inflators to be recalled. Industry sources have said that recall costs could climb to about $10 billion. The ammonium nitrate compound used in the airbags was found to become volatile with age and prolonged exposure to heat, causing the devices to explode. Costs so far have pushed the company into the red for three years, and it has been forced to sell subsidiaries to pay fines and other liabilities. Founded as a textiles company in 1933, Takata began producing airbags in 1987 and at its peak became the world's number two producer of the safety products. It also produces one-third of all seatbelts used in vehicles sold globally, along with other components. The Tokyo Stock Exchange said its shares would be delisted on July 27. The stock has collapsed 95 per cent since January 2014 as the recalls mounted.

  18. On the flick of a flurry of switches, a studio on a gray industrial estate in East London lights up to reveal hundreds of bright neon artworks. Owned by 43-year-old artist Marcus Bracey, the gallery in Walthamstow, called 'God's Own Junkyard', houses the collection of four generations of his family who have made, bought and displayed neon works. The pieces are accompanied by kitsch memorabilia that Bracey has collected from film sets and car boot sales across Britain, leaving just enough room for a narrow winding aisle for visitors to navigate their way through the gallery. "This is my neon emporium, my museum of light, my Aladdin's cave," Bracey told Reuters from the center of the high-ceilinged studio which runs up an electricity bill of over 700 pounds ($900) a week. Some of Bracey's works have appeared in films, including "Mission Impossible" and "Eyes Wide Shut", or decorated department stores, namely London's Selfridges, while others have been bought by celebrities such as Kate Moss. Bracey recently sold a large God Save the Queen neon sign in front of a heart-shaped British, Union Jack, flag for 58,000 pounds ($74,700) at auction to a buyer in Dubai. A replica is on display at God's Own Junkyard, which Bracey opened with his father Chris in 2008 after running out of space at home to store the family's work. The earliest pieces in the showroom, often used for film shoots, date back to the 1950s when Marcus's grandfather left his job as a miner in Wales to join a lighting company and eventually make signs for carnivals across Britain. "He left the dark and came into the light," Bracey said. Bracey's new works, which take around six weeks to make with neon moulded over 800-degree burners, now sit alongside those of his 17-year-old daughter Amber, a graffiti artist and next in line to take over the family business. Bracey, however, isn't ready to step away from his neon wonderland just yet. "The buzz, the feel, the happiness. To turn it on and see what it looks like," he said of the excitement he gets every time he flicks on those switches.
  19. French presidential frontrunner Emmanuel Macron filed a legal complaint Thursday after his far-right rival Marine Le Pen repeated rumours that he had an offshore account during a particularly bruising TV debate. The pro-EU centrist Macron and Le Pen battled repeatedly over terrorism, the economy and Europe in Wednesday's TV duel watched by some 16.5 million people. "I hope that we will not find out that you have an offshore account in the Bahamas," Le Pen said during the debate, which was her last chance to narrow the gap before Sunday's run-off vote. Macron would win around 60 percent to Le Pen's 40 percent if the vote were held now, surveys suggest. The 39-year-old ex-economy minister described his rival's insinuation as "defamation" and after his complaint, French prosecutors launched a probe Thursday into who started the rumour. Macron's campaign team called it a "textbook case" of "fake news", saying the information began circulating online two hours before the debate started. The rumour was based on two documents that claimed to show he has an offshore company called "La Providence" in the Caribbean, which his team said included an "outrageous falsification" of Macron's signature. Macron's team said the information was spread on Twitter by accounts close to Kremlin-friendly news sites like Sputnik and RT as well as supporters of US President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Le Pen's National Front party said her campaign website had been repeatedly targeted by a hacker close to the far-left, who was arrested last week. The probe into the anti-Macron allegations came as former US president Barack Obama threw his support behind the centrist, saying in a video he "appeals to people's hopes and not their fears". Obama said Macron had "put forward a vision for the important role that France plays in Europe and around the world" and added "Vive la France!" The day after the debate, in which Le Pen branded Macron "the candidate of the elite" and he called her "the high priestess of fear", the candidates were back at each other's throats. After the bruising confrontation, a snap poll by French broadcaster BFMTV found that nearly two-thirds of viewers thought Macron was the "most convincing" of the two, broadly mirroring forecasts for the decisive election on Sunday. "I succeeded in what I set out to do, annoy Mr Macron," she said on a campaign stop in the western town of Dol-de-Bretagne, where protesters threw eggs at her entourage, although she was not hit. At a final rally in the northern village of Ennemain the anti-immigration candidate told supporters she would given them back the keys to the Elysee Palace. "France cannot wait... five more years to hold its head high," she said. Macron, who headed to the southwestern town of Albi to meet supporters, told France Inter radio: "You can't choke off all of the lies but you can kill off some of them." At a final rally he promised cheering supporters: "We will keep our promise of change to the end". During the visit to Albi, the former economy minister was criticised by some 50 union activists who demanded the abolition of France's controversial 2016 labour reforms. 'Brutal and violent' debate The aggressive and often unruly debate shocked many observers used to a more reserved tone in French political discourse. "It is misleading to call that fist fight a debate," an editorial in the right-leaning Figaro newspaper said. Le Monde said it had been "brutal" and "violent from start to finish". The Elabe poll for BFMTV showed that Macron had convinced 63 percent of viewers compared to 34 percent for Le Pen suggested she did little to win over new voters. Le Pen tried to portray Macron as being soft on Islamic fundamentalism, playing to the concerns of many of her supporters after a string of terror attacks in France. But Macron was in combative form throughout, repeatedly portraying Le Pen's proposals as simplistic, defeatist or dangerous and targeting her proposals to withdraw France from the euro in particular. The euro policy "was the big nonsense of Marine Le Pen's programme", he said. Le Pen called the euro, shared by 19 countries in the European Union and blamed by some in France for a rise in prices, "the currency of bankers, it's not the people's currency". In the first round of the election on April 23, Marine Le Pen finished second behind Macron with 21.3 percent after softening the FN's image over the past six years -- but without fully removing doubt about the party's core beliefs. She sees her rise as the consequence of growing right-wing nationalism and a backlash against globalisation reflected in the election of Donald Trump in the United States and Britain's shock vote to leave the European Union.
