  1. On Monday evening, Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty’s husband and businessman Raj Kundra was accused of producing pornographic films and distributing it on the internet through a mobile application. As a result, Kundra was arrested and remains in police custody until July 23, 2021. When such a big celebrity gets involved in such a controversial matter, a run-down their old social media posts is one of the most basic and common things to expect and in Kundra’s case, his online history was full of talking points, especially while interacting with other big names of the sports and entertainment industries of India. One such interaction took place between Kundra and the current vice captain of the Indian Test cricket team, Ajinkya Rahane. @TheRajKundra Sir you are doing a Great job.. — Ajinkya Rahane (@ajinkyarahane88) October 19, 2012 Back in 2012, Rahane showed his appreciation for Kundra’s “work” and said that he was doing a “great job”. Obviously, the message wasn’t about making porn but about one of the other shows that the businessman was involved with at the time. Kundra responded to Rahane’s comments happily and in fact invited him to watch the show live, which obviously given the current scenario, has to be the worst probable response the accused could ever have thought of. In the old Twitter thread, Rahane was finally seen accepting Kundra’s offer and is been trolled by the Indian people almost a decade since that conversation took place: @ajinkyarahane88 - अब underground होने का समय आ गया है pic.twitter.com/aKMaLrpSEB — सचिन तिवारी 🇮🇳🕉️ (प्राथमिक शिक्षक भर्ती याचक)🥺 (@sachintiwari4u) July 20, 2021If Ajinkya Rahane wasn't a Cricketer https://t.co/r53XLlELyC pic.twitter.com/U9ese2F0W6 — 𝐃𝐞𝐯 (@Mohali_Monster) July 19, 2021Rahane talking to Raj Kundra pic.twitter.com/DyPg1Ma35I — sudhanshu` (@whoshud) July 19, 2021Rahane to Raj Kundra : pic.twitter.com/Y5cXsmIq4K — N I T I N (@theNitinWalke) July 19, 2021Kitne Tejaswi log hai humare paas! Ok so here go's Porn Vs Prostitution. Why is it legal to pay someone for *** on camera? How is one different to the other?? — Raj Kundra (@TheRajKundra) March 29, 2012“Ok so here go's Porn Vs Prostitution. Why is it legal to pay someone for *** on camera? How is one different to the other??” he wrote back in 2012. He also spoke about the circle of professions in India in yet another tweet around the same time. “India: Actors are playing cricket, Cricketers are playing politics, Politicians are watching porn and Porn stars are becoming actors....!” India: Actors are playing cricket, Cricketers are playing politics, Politicians are watching porn and Porn stars are becoming actors....! — Raj Kundra (@TheRajKundra) May 3, 2012 “We are releasing only one movie a week so yes, the sales pick up…” reads one of the messages from Kundra’s discovered WhatsApp chat with his alleged partner in crime in which the two were discussing the revenue generated from producing these films. Raj Kundra’s Twitter bio reads: “Life is about making the right choices.” View the full article
  2. Shilpa Shetty’s husband Raj Kundra has always been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons and this time is no different. Last year, his name popped up in the ‘gold scam and fraud’ as a Non-Resident Indian businessman, Sachiin J. Joshi claimed in a police complaint that he was reportedly lured and then cheated by SGPL's 'Satyug Gold Scheme', launched around 2014. View this post on InstagramCut to 2021, Raj Kundra has been arrested for making porn movies. Yes, you read that right. This is what we know so far: 1. Mumbai Police said that Raj Kundra is the ‘key conspirator’ in this case and it first came to the police's attention in February. Police found key evidence against Raj and now after hours of investigation, he has been taken in custody. “There was a case registered with Crime Branch Mumbai in February 2021 about the creation of pornographic films and publishing them through some apps. We’ve arrested Mr. Raj Kundra in this case on 19/7/21 as he appears to be the key conspirator of this. We have sufficient evidence regarding this. The investigation is in progress," said Hemant Nagrale, Commissioner of Mumbai Police. 2. According to reports, 10 people have been arrested in this case including Raj Kundra. 3. It all started when the Property Cell of the Mumbai Police busted a gang that made adult content for OTT platforms. Police first arrested actor Gehana Vasisth along with eight others in the case. View this post on Instagram4. During the probe, the crime branch arrested a person named Umesh Kamat who then shed light on Raj Kundra’s role in the whole racket. “Our team worked on it closely after filing the first charge sheet in the case. During the probe, we found that the accused, in fact, sent WeTransfer files abroad sitting in Kundra’s office," said an officer of the Crime Branch. 5. Raj Kundra has been booked under sections 420 (cheating), 34 (common intention), 292, and 293 (related to obscene and indecent advertisements and displays) of IPC besides relevant sections of the IT Act and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. 6. It has also come into notice how the gang used to lure struggling actors into making porn movies by promising them roles in OTT shows. As per a report in News18, ‘the accused used to earn Rs 2-3 lakh per video and the victims were just paid Rs 20,000-Rs 25,000.’ Both Raj and Shilpa are mum on these allegations and haven’t released any statements so far in their defense. People are bashing Raj Kundra on social media and have funny reactions to his arrest. They have also dragged Shilpa in their comments. People are using Shilpa’s popular dialogue ‘super se upar’ while making fun of Kundra. Here are the reactions: © NDTV Instagram © NDTV Instagram © NDTV Instagram What do you have to say about the whole fiasco? Let us know in the comments section below. View the full article
  3. With films like Pink, Manmarziyaan, Mulk, Thappad, and more, Taapsee Pannu has proved that if you have talent, nothing can stop you from making it big in an industry infamous for being biased towards outsiders. After working for more than a decade, Taapsee has added one more feather to her hat by announcing her own production house Outsiders Films. She is collaborating with Pranjal Khandhdiya for the venture, who has been working as a content creator and producer for 20 years. View this post on InstagramPeople were happy that she is finally doing it for all the outsiders like her, who struggle to find a mentor in the industry who can support them in the industry. Asked if her new production house would be a platform for outsiders in the film industry, Taapsee Pannu told Hindustan Times, "I never claimed that I will give work to outsiders. I did not say that. I said 'I need to give back to people who made me who I am today - the industry and audience.' I have always taken this tag of 'outsider' with pride. I genuinely feel the outsider’s view is better. I think I have been able to pull off the kind of films I did because I had a regular ‘outsider' life till now. I take that as a compliment." View this post on InstagramShe also added that she doesn’t want to be like those people who have been unfair in their approach and chose actors on the basis of their background and not their talent. She wants to give opportunities to actors who genuinely deserve it regardless of their background and connections. “If I start thinking that I will only give work to outsiders, then I will be like those people who give work only to star kids. I will be equally biased, and it won't be fair. I will allow someone who genuinely deserves the work, regardless of the background. I do not think that it is fair. Outsiders Films was not made to tackle nepotism. Then you become the other extreme,” added Taapsee. We somewhere echo her thoughts because it’s only sensible to give work to people who genuinely deserve it only based on their talent and passion for the art. She also released a statement wherein she shared that she always wanted to set up her production house since management comes naturally to her. She said, “The audience and the industry have given me a lot of support and love over the 11 years of my career. With Outsiders Films, I aim to give back to the industry and empower talent who are looking for a breakthrough and come with no background like me. Pranjal and I together look forward to opening doors for new and fresh talents, both in front and behind the camera.” View this post on InstagramWe are happy that she is trying to make a mark in the production space too and hope to see some good work as a result of this stint. 4. Whenever we talk about the T20 World Cup, the first thing that comes to our mind is MS Dhoni lifting the trophy after beating arch-rivals Pakistan in 2007. That was the inaugural edition of the showpiece tournament and a young Indian team, led by an inexperienced skipper went all the way to make the nation proud when nobody expected them to. © Reuters Since then, several editions have passed but India is yet to repeat the same magic, despite being home to the best T20 league in the world and having a large group of players who can walk into any T20 side in the world. © Reuters Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir, who was the top-scorer in the 2007 final, blasted the Indian mentality of cherishing the past way too much. Saying that it was nice to be part of a World Cup-winning side, Gambhir pointed out that 13 years have gone by and we’re still obsessing about our past achievements rather than thinking about the future. The cricketer-turned-politician opined that it was time that we moved on from the past and started looking at the future. © Reuters “It was special (being a part of the 2007 T20 World Cup squad), but I have forgotten about it. To be honest, India needs to move on from that. 2007, it’s what, more than 13 years ago and I think we need to get rid of this obsession of 2007 and 2011," Gambhir said on Star Sports. Robin Uthappa, another player who was part of the 2007 World T20 squad, echoed Gambhir’s thoughts and said the Indian team has already proven that they have what it takes to bring the trophy home. © Reuters “Of course, for me personally, it’s a special moment, but I tend to agree with Gautam Gambhir. I think we have achieved that in 2007, so we know that is achievable," Uthappa said. Both Gambhir and Uthappa were speaking after the International Cricket Council announced the groups for the forthcoming T20 World Cup. ICYMI: The groups for the #T20WorldCup have been revealed. 5. MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina have spent majority of their time playing alongside each other -- be it the Indian team or the Indian Premier League. The bond that they share is hard to find in any other pair in world cricket because it's not often that you see a player following in the footsteps of his mentor and announcing his retirement on the very same day. Having spent so much time together, it was only normal that both of them had plenty to share about their on-field experiences. Dhoni played the majority of his cricket as the skipper of the Indian team, hence was in the habit of getting things done as per his liking. © Reuters Back in 2018, the Indian team had travelled to Ireland and Dhoni was on the bench and had to perform the duties of the 12th man and carry drinks to the ground. Raina knew he wouldn’t get the same opportunity ever again and he made full use of that, so much so that Dhoni was left annoyed. "We had gone to Ireland in 2018, and enjoyed ourselves there after the matches. Dhoni bhai carried drinks for me there," Raina said on ‘22 Yarns Podcast’. Recalling the incident, Raina said he was batting with KL Rahul and both of them had scored fifties. The best thing about being good mates is that you know each other really well and the same was the case with Dhoni, who knew Raina would ask for gloves and bats and that’s why he carried the whole kit bag so that he wouldn't have to run around again. © Reuters Handing Raina his kit bag, Dhoni told the southpaw to take whatever he had to as he wouldn’t come out in the cold again. "I remember one moment. Dhoni bhai thought that I often ask a lot for gloves and bats while batting, so he brought the whole kit bag to the ground and said: 'Take whatever you want, don't call me again'. I think I was batting alongside Rahul and we both had hit fifties. He (Dhoni) said 'I won't come again, it's very cold out here'. (chuckles)," he added. © Reuters But Raina was in no mood to let the opportunity go this easily and asked Dhoni to bring his grip as well which annoyed the Ranchi-born cricketer to the core. And we can’t blame Raina for that, after all, who doesn’t like pulling his best friend's legs. "I still said, 'Do one thing, bring a grip as well'. And he replied: 'Bohot bade waala hai tu, tu rukja, paani pi, mai leke aata hu.' So it was that kind of fun. I thought to myself that I'll take full revenge that day," said Raina, who is the third-highest scorer in IPL history. © Twitter/Chennai Super Kings Having retired from international cricket, both players are still active in the IPL and will be back in action when the IPL 2021 resumes in the United Arab Emirates in September. 6. Suresh Raina got really candid about his thoughts on Virat Kohli’s future as the captain of the Indian cricket team and expressed what he feels should happen with his duty as the leader of the Men in Blue in an interview with News24 Sports. "I think he has been the No. 1 captain. His record proves that he has achieved a lot. I think he is the No. 1 batsman in the world. You're talking about an ICC trophy but he hasn't even won an IPL yet,” Raina said. View this post on Instagram “I feel that he needs to be given some time. There are 2-3 World Cups taking place one after the other - two T20 World Cups and then the 50-over World Cup. It's not easy to reach the final - sometimes you miss out on a few things," he added. Ever since the crushing defeat at the hands of Kane Williamson and the New Zealand squad in the semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2019, a rise has been seen in the number of critics who don’t believe in Kohli’s ability as a captain. Although, it has to be addressed that throughout their group stage, India remained the only team to incur one loss and were on top of the points table as well. 1, 1, 1 - the only ODI innings where each of the top three scored just one run. 'A spell of bad cricket', as Virat Kohli put it, saw India exit the 2019 World Cup at the semi-final stage.https://t.co/bjYvheciKu #OnThisDay pic.twitter.com/VEkD6cEfYP — ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) July 10, 2020 Talking about the disappointing performance during the one-off match in the World Test Championship Final in England, Raina also addressed how the weather played a massive impact on India’s inability to play at a high level, while also mentioning that the most seasoned batters of the squad should have shoulders the responsibility a lot better than they did. The WTC final was one such example. People said it was because of the conditions but I feel there was something lacking in batting. The bigger batsmen will have to stitch partnerships and take responsibilities," he added. View this post on Instagram We are not chokers: Suresh Raina "See, we are not chokers, because we already have the 1983 World Cup, 2007 T20 World Cup the then 50-over World Cup in 2011. We need to understand that players are training hard. With three World Cups approaching, I don't think anyone will call them chokers. We need to give them a little more time. They are doing well and Virat has the capability to change the game. We need to respect the new style of this team. But I feel that in the next 12 to 16 months, an ICC trophy is going to come to India," Raina explained. View the full article
  7. Prithvi Shaw went on to play a brilliant 84-run innings during the intra-squad practice match in Sri Lanka ahead of the white ball-series which is to follow. In a video shared by the official YouTube channel of Sri Lanka Cricket, the 21-year old could be seen staking up shots, the majority of which seemed textbook-perfect. Having said that, due to the Virar born’s not-so-good couple of years, at least in international cricket, he has developed a large segment of critics who have different reasons for doubting his abilities when representing the country, especially on foreign soil. Since then he has not only had time to regain his confidence, he has used it to become a better leader and a dependable batsman while being completely open about the kind of mental pressure he had to go through in order to climb up a level. “I was in complete tension when I was dropped after the first Test. I got a feeling like I was worthless though I was happy that the team was doing well. I said to myself ‘I need to pull up my socks’. There is a saying, ‘hard work beats talent’. I told myself all this talent is fine but it’s of no use if I don’t work hard. It was the saddest day of my life (when he was dropped). I went to my room and broke down. I felt like something wrong was happening. I needed answers quickly,” Shaw had confessed in an Indian Express interview back in March. “Once you are dropped from the team there is pressure to perform and make a comeback. I am keen to get runs. I wanted to get big-daddy runs,” he’d added. Recently, Shaw was in the news for enjoying a lot of demand in the international cricketing circuit and both A and B strings of the Indian cricket team currently docked at England and Sri Lanka, respectively, wanted him to be their opening batsman, after injury ruled out Shubman Gill from the entire Test series against Joe Root’s side. 8. Former Indian opener and a massive social media presence in the Indian cricketing community, Wasim Jaffer has presented his “unpopular opinion” about why Rahul Dravid should not become the full-time head coach of the Indian squad, in his YouTube Channel. “I feel that he [Dravid] should not push himself to become the coach of an international team,” Jaffer says in the introductory bit of the video before getting into the nitty gritties of what he really means. View this post on Instagram Talking about the fact that there are two strings of the Indian cricket team at the moment that are scheduled to play Test and white-ball series England and Sri Lanka, respectively and almost simultaneously, Jaffer says: “It’s very rare to see two teams of an international team play cricket simultaneously, which goes on to show how strong India’s bench strength and how many good players there are. The credit obviously goes to the BCCI. The way they’ve developed the infrastructure and pathway is the reason for this strong supply line of players to the national team,” Jaffer says. View this post on Instagram “Even more credit, I think, should go to Rahul Dravid. The way he is working as a head coach at the NCA and the way he’s guiding U19 players, India A players, fringe players and even the international players who go to NCA [National Cricket Academy] when they aren’t in the team. There can’t be a better role model or mentor than Rahul Dravid.” “And now he’s going as a coach of this Indian team to Sri Lanka. So I am sure those youngsters will benefit a lot and I personally feel that he should not push himself to become the coach of an international team.” NEW VIDEO Unpopular Opinion: Rahul Dravid shouldn't become India coach full time cos couple of other teams need him more. Link: https://t.co/hgd0a6zWdn #SLvIND #RahulDravid pic.twitter.com/QQaR9bbw3c — Wasim Jaffer (@WasimJaffer14) July 9, 2021 “I feel he needs to work with the U-19 and India A players at the NCA. I believe the international players who play in the Indian team are a finished product but Rahul Dravid’s mentorship and guidance is more needed at the U19 and India A level as it can help to reach the next level.” “He needs to stay at the NCA for a longer period for out bench strength to keep on growing even stronger. It’s a very exciting series in front of us. Lots of youngsters to look out for and I wish all the players all the very best,” Jaffer concludes. Watch Jaffer’s video here: Unfortunately for the Ranji Trophy legend, not all of his fans agree with his ‘hot take’ this time around, which led to some mixed reactions on Twitter when he first shared the video: We're losing ICC events here, and you want India to give away Dravid ? — Ajinkya Ashok Darshane (@ajinkyadarshane) July 9, 2021Wasim Bhai NCA coaching apko bhi apply krna hai. 9. On Monday, one of the most iconic commentators of the Indian cricket community, Harsha Bhogle referred to the coronavirus as “the Chinese virus” while talking about it has now gotten to several members of the England cricket team, while suggesting stronger bio-bubble protocol for the matches to take place from now on. It doesn't look like it is going anywhere. The Chinese virus has now infiltrated the England cricket team. The bubbles will get more stringent. I guess there is no other option — Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) July 6, 2021 “It doesn't look like it is going anywhere. The Chinese virus has now infiltrated the England cricket team. The bubbles will get more stringent. I guess there is no other option,” the ‘Voice of Indian cricket’ wrote from his official Twitter handle. And even though Bhogle’s recommendation for stringent bubble laws was well-received, it was the part where he called the pandemic a Chinese virus which led to a clear division between his followers. While many appreciated the 59-year old’s boldness and courage, others simply suggested that it was an unnecessary, controversial statement which could have been avoided. However, many have countered by talking about how adding a nationality to something as devastating as this pandemic has led to physical and mental assault of the Chinese community overseas. As far as the England squad is concerned, seven members of the England squad (three players and four staff members) were confirmed to have contracted the COVID-19 virus ahead of the ODI series against Pakistan. Consequently, every team member of the squad has been mandated to practice self-isolation, rendering them out, at least for the first couple of matches of the series. 10. The ridiculous list of demands being made by Sushil Kumar seems to be endless as on Sunday, officials revealed that the two-time Olympic medallist requested a television in Tihar jail in order to keep himself updated with the latest happenings in the wrestling world. According to a News 18 report, Kumar urged to have a TV set up brought to him through his advocate to a senior jail official. View this post on Instagram This isn’t the first time the 38-year old athlete had expressed the need to have a luxury while being under police and judicial custody. Ever since getting arrested in the murder case of fellow wrestler, Sagar Dhankar, he has also demanded special nutritional supplements like Omega 3 capsules, pre-workout supplements, a protein shake and multivitamin pills among other things, in order to get a proper “wrestler’s diet”. A regular jail’s diet, which consists of five rotis, two vegetables, dal and rice, which the inmates get twice a day, is not good enough for the athlete. Back when the Delhi Police were finally able to get their hands on Kumar, who had been absconding for over two weeks since Dhankar’s death, he was full of regret, had refused to eat anything, had sleepless nights in the Model Town police station, while crying on the floor. 11. One of the most controversial cricket analysts of India, Sanjay Manjrekar has finally shared his thoughts on one of the biggest problems that the Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri overlooked while preparing the roster for the World Test Championship final which led to the sudden downfall of the team at Southampton’s Ageas Bowl cricket ground. According to Manjrekar, the addition of Ravindra Jadeja in the Playing XI for the final against New Zealand was an incorrect decision. The all-rounder picked a solitary wicket while scoring 15 and 16 runs in the first and second innings respectively, as the Men in Blue struggled to build a decent team total and ended up losing the match and the WTC Mace by 8 wickets. View this post on Instagram "If you have to look at how India went about before the game started, picking two spinners was always a debatable selection especially when the conditions were overcast and the toss was delayed by a day. They picked one player for his batting, which was Jadeja, and his left-arm spin wasn't the reason he was picked. He was picked for his batting and that is something that I am always against," Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo. "You have got to pick specialist players in the team and if they felt that the pitch was dry and turning, they would have picked Jadeja for his left-arm spin, along with Ashwin, that would have made sense. But they picked him for his batting and I think that backfired as mostly it does." View this post on Instagram A look back at the past three years of Ravindra Jadeja’s batting career would show why Kohli’s decision to pick him primarily as a batsman made sense on the paper. The south-paw has averaged over 50 with the bat while working to make his bowling more effective too. But thanks to the wind, cloud overcast, and humility, which made the situation a lot more pace and swing friendly, having Jadeja’s talents as a spinner left Manjrekar a little bitter in the mouth. View this post on Instagram "But I hope India don't do what England have historically done, pick somebody because there is another strength that they have and that strength might just come to good use, but very rarely it does when it's a pressure game." 12. uring the tea break of Day 3 of the ICC World Test Championship final, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan opened up about an incident early in his cricketing life when Sourav Ganguly decided to be honest with him at the absolute worst time possible. According to CricTracker Pathan explained that it was just before he was supposed to make his international debut against the Australians, the then team captain, Ganguly walked up to him and straightaway told him “I did not want you in the team.” “Dada thought that I was too young as a 19-year-old to be playing in Australia and that I would be challenged,” Pathan went on to explain the skipper’s reservations towards Pathan, who was just 19-years-old at the time but went on to dismiss Adam Gilchrist with a ripper of a yorker in just his second match. Heading into the series, Pathan was surrounded by doubts and insecurities but by the time the series debutant was back home, he was the fresh youngblood, everyone was ready to back with all their heart. In the two matches that he played, Pathan managed to pick four wickets, including a three-wicket haul at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The southpaw not only dealt with the demons in his own head but in fact went on to get an apology by his captain, who admitted to have wrongly assessed Pathan’s talents, skills and mental preparation. “He (Ganguly) came up to me and said how he was wrong in his views. That really shocked me, because very rarely does a skipper talk about the selection and then admits his mistake,” Pathan recalled. View this post on Instagram Pathan would go down the history of Indian cricketer as one of the most talented cricketers who had the skills to take the burden of the team on both sides of the field - with the ball and the bat, but not being able to live up to his own expectations due to overwork and a series of unfortunate and ill-timed injuries. Nonetheless, ever since he has made his transition as a cricket analyst and commentator, Pathan has received nothing but unconditional support from his fans and continues to be one of the most respected members of the Indian cricket community to date. 13. After finishing the opening day (technically the Day 2) of the World Test Championship final on top, Team India failed to capitalise on the advantage and were bundled out for 217 in their first innings. Virat Kohli failed to add a single run to his overnight tally of 44 runs and was trapped by RCB teammate Kyle Jamieson, who set him up nicely by bowling a few outswingers and then brought one back in sharply, catching the Indian skipper by surprise. Despite gifting over the advantage to the opposition, India were hopeful of making early inroads into New Zealand’s innings but things didn’t go as per plan for Indian bowlers. Tom Latham and Devon Conway, much like what Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill did for India, played cautiously and batted for nearly 35 overs, adding 70 runs for the opening wicket. 14. Becoming an influential couple in the world of Indian cricket has to be one of the most tricky tasks ever. TV presenter and the wife of Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah Sanjana Ganesan shared a picture of her conversation with Dinesh Karthik from Day 3 of the World Test Championship finals but the response she got from the fans was more about Bumrah than her. Actor and the wife of Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma has been living in this toxic world for over a couple of years during which if the Indian skipper failed to put up enough numbers, it felt like a field day for the actor. "A 'golden duck' is all Virat Kohli could gift Anushka Sharma at the Lord's" — Jack Sparrow (@Kill_me1123) July 28, 2014 For instance, check out this comment by a random Twitter user who got Sharma involved in a sarcastic criticism towards Kohli, who got out for a duck during a five-match series against England back in 2014. The reason why this particular incident is so special is that Sharma was not even in the United Kingdom for this match and still got dragged into all this. In the first innings of the World Test Championship finals, Bumrah did struggle a little bit on either side of the pitch and was visibly anxious in the middle. After going wicketless and being one of the more expensive bowlers for Kohli, Bumrah’s dismissal on the golden duck brought him insult to injury. View the full article
  15. The Ageas Bowl in Southampton finally saw some cricket on Saturday when the dicey England weather showed some mercy, and Day 2 of the World Test Championship between India and New Zealand led to some action, albeit not the complete 90-over day. Nonetheless, Team India captain Virat Kohli had to the pitch to bat sooner than he had hoped for after the top-order of Rohit Sharma, Shuman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara got wrapped up at 88. View this post on Instagram To make matters worse for the skipper, the on-field umpires Michael Gough and Richard Illingworth, ended up creating a total mess when in the 40th over of the innings, Trent Boult appealed for a caught-behind and the officials decided to go to the third umpire to get a clearer conclusion. Since it was the umpires’ wish to go upstairs, while New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson had not even taken a DRS review, the only thing they should have checked for was if catch taken by wicketkeeper BJ Watling was clean or not. View this post on Instagram However, they went a step further and even brought out the UltraEdge to check if Kohli’s bat had nudged the ball before it went into the hands of the keeper. Luckily for the Indian skipper, the space between his willow and the ball was big enough to make a conclusive decision but still, the umpires essentially gifted a free DRS to the Black Caps. Law 2.2 of the ICC Test Playing Conditions deals with Caught Decisions and Obstructing the Field states: “The third umpire shall determine whether the batsman has been caught, whether the delivery was a Bump Ball, or if the batsman obstructed the field. However, in reviewing the television replay(s), the third umpire shall first check the fairness of the delivery for all decisions involving a catch (all modes of No ball except for (i) in respect of the front foot, which shall already have been checked in accordance with clause 21.5; and (ii) the bowler using an Illegal Bowling Action, subject to the proviso that the third umpire may review whether the bowler has used a prohibited Specific Variation under Article 6.2 of the Illegal Bowling Regulations) and whether the batsman has hit the ball. View this post on Instagram The incident left the batsman agitated and angry which was clearly visible in his eyes but given the stature of the match he was playing in and the unique circumstances he found himself in, he smiled helplessly in the end. Kohli’s anger was shared by former Indian opener Virender Sehwag and a majority of the Team India fans who couldn’t believe how the officials couldn’t see the possible loophole and rather stepped right into it. Good on Simon Doull to clarify the incident on air, but it exposes a loophole in the system as it stands. Umpire reviews in cases like these must only be for fair catches. 16. Shashwat Sachdev’s Dobara has to be one of those songs that you instantly fall in love with and put on repeat for hours and hours, regardless of what your music preferences are. A dive into the innovative lo-fi genre, the song is about the “feeling of being in love but still feeling incomplete,” according to the artist. “I feel like the song is about incomplete love. Maybe, a person wishes to move away from their lover but the lover wishes to leave the opportunity of being with them once again, maybe in this lifetime or the next,” Shashwat says. A National Award-winning Indian music composer whose own rendition of warcry not only became iconic in the movie Uri: The Surgical Strike but continues to be one of the most engaging background music titles in the Indian film industry to this date. And if the National Award wasn’t enough to tell you how talented the Jaipur-born is, the fact that people started making his tunes their ringtones ought to do it. But the transition from filmy music to making a self-titled album "Sha" has not been the smoothest. He misses the instant gratification which comes with filmy songs and the kind of recognition they get thanks to them continuously being played in the background of trailers and launch events, so much so, that by the time the audience goes to watch the movie, they already know the lyrics to his songs. Conversely, the process of making an album do well is a grind and its success depends on how many people would organically refer it to their friends and family members. Clearly passionate about this project, a humble Shashwat goes on to address his concerns and nervousness about Dobara. “For a couple of days (after the song was out), I was honestly very underwhelmed that it did not work. I felt that there was a certain gap between how you do film work and how you work as an artist,” he says. “I wanted my audience to also hear it, but I realized that it is a slow process.” His worries are understandable, considering the song is like a pet project of his that he wrote and produced last year after consulting with his wife, Magic, who is also a very talented producer. View this post on Instagram When you hop on to the official music video on YouTube, the likes-to-dislikes ratio and the comments section flooded with nothing but positive feedback, tell the real story of how nicely the audience has received it. For Shashwat, these things are simply “added expectations”. “I want to contribute by contributing not just by expecting that I would like to get these many likes or these many comments. I feel these parameters are very bad for an artist who wants to create as an independent person. If you are trying to create something and you want to clearly contribute, then expecting or depending on ‘likes and comments are really disturbing. Talking about the video, you’d notice that it is not your typical music bit with choreography, or hundreds of dancers, or even a couple of famous faces enacting a romantic scene. Nope. There’s this one guy, scrolling through his phone with his headphones on, on a rainy night. Not only does Shashwat stay true to the lo-fi genre with such a simplistic video, but it also allows his music to take centre stage. “Focused at being distracted,” Shashwat calls it. © Malsons - YouTube “The reason for having a lo-fi video was actually to show this guy sitting in the room who's just so sincerely distracted. And he wants to think about the girl that's left him and wait for her. It's a beautiful night, and it's raining, and it's a beautiful room. He could have been with somebody else that night, and there's this work that needs to be done but his focus is on waiting for that girl to come back,” he explains. Shashwat gives a lot of attention to his wife, Magic, for making him the artist he is today. He says it was she who opened up his mind and supported him to follow what he really wanted to do after he’d gone to America and had gotten “distracted”, to his own confession. View this post on Instagram “I learned classical music for 21 years, studied western classical piano for around 10-11 years, and I had only listened to Bollywood music for the first 18 years of my life. Then, I started dating Magic when I was 18 and the first English song I ever heard was played to me by her,” the musician explains. “When I was in Los Angeles one day, I remember I called her and I was very upset and she said something to me that stuck with me forever. She said ‘Own your desi, Sha’ and I think has been her biggest influence on me,” he adds. And owned his desi, Shahwat has. You could see how he has managed to make a distinctive position for himself in the Indian music industry and has only made his position stronger as he went from one project to another. He started applying this version of his when he first did the Anushka Sharma produced Phillauri, doubled back for Veere Di Wedding and perfected in Uri. View the full article
  17. The police in India do not have that good an image in most cases. The sleaziness and their tendencies to sneakily ask for bribes are some of the biggest reasons for that. Obviously, as it turns out, the police in our neighbouring countries are no different. © iStock Well, there is one small difference. Here, things are done in a more subtle manner, unlike in Pakistan. © Reuters The Pakistan Police were left red-faced with embarrassment when a local fast food restaurant took to Twitter to share an incident that they had to face earlier this week. © Reuters The management team of a burger joint in Pakistan called Johnny & Jugnu, reported that the police had arrested all of the staff members at one of their locations in Lahore. Back then, Kumar was completely silent, regretful of his actions, sobbing, sleepless and refused to eat anything at all. On 26th May, the day he turned 38, reports had emerged suggesting that he wanted a “wrestler’s diet” but was straightaway refused. "The one who murdered my son does not deserve to be called a mentor. All the medals won by Sushil Kumar should be taken from him. We believe that police will investigate properly but Sushil will try to influence it by using his political links," Rana's mother argued according to India Today. Where did he go when he was absconding, who gave him shelter, and most importantly the gangsters with whom he is connected to. He should be hanged so that people learn a lesson and think before killing his own pupil," said Rana’s father. View the full article
  23. BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly has been in Dubai for a couple of weeks, with the primary motive to make arrangements for establishing the second leg of the 14th edition of the Indian Cricket Team in the United Arab Emirates. View this post on Instagram While the resumption of the IPL seems to be happening rather seamlessly, it is what Ganguly has been doing in his free time that is making the people of the country a bit angry. Recently, the former Indian skipper shared a picture of him suited up in a car racer’s kit, a face mask, a pair of aviators, and a helmet in his hand while letting his followers know that he did some car racing while sharing how hot it can become behind the wheel. © Instagram - Sourav Ganguly However, this picture left a few of his followers red-faced and critical of what the 48-year old was doing in Dubai, especially when his country continues to struggle and tries to stand up after the crippling wave of the coronavirus pandemic. One of the most well-regarded celebrities within the country, even Ganguly was not spared by social media critics, who felt the need to tell the former athlete what he should be doing with his free time as if he was an infant. © Instagram - Sourav Ganguly Eventually, not even Dada could stand against all the online hate and ended up removing the post from his Instagram profile. This isn’t the first time Ganguly received criticism for sharing how he feels in Dubai. In yet another picture shared by the cricketers, he describes how Dubai “set me free… from lockdowns” and was slammed again for “showing off his privileges”. © Instagram - Sourav Ganguly © Instagram - Sourav Ganguly Meanwhile, Oman’s capital Muscat has been added as a fourth alternative venue for the upcoming T20 World Cup other than the three cities in the UAE - Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah. "Yes, the BCCI, during the ICC board meeting, has formally asked for a four-week window to take a final call but, internally, they have said that they would like to keep the hosting rights and wouldn't mind the tournament being held in UAE and Oman," PTI reported quoting a BCCI official. 24. The first Test between England and New Zealand turned out to be just as exciting as cricket fans from all over the world were expecting. It was however, the lack of winning mentality shown by the hosts which led to a disappointing conclusion to what could have been a phenomenal chase by Joe Root’s men. In the final session of Day 5, the Englishmen required 120 runs from 63 deliveries to seal the deal and take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series against the touring Kiwis and they had all the reasons to take that leap of faith and go for the win. View this post on Instagram They had only lost three wickets so far, Dom Sibley looked in form, albeit wasting over 207 deliveries during his 60-run stint in what was an achievable chase, and they still had names like Dan Lawrance and James Bracey waiting in the dugout with their kits on. Instead, the skipper and his batsmen decided to resort to defending each and every ball until the end of the day and the session, having the clash with so much potential mellow down to a mere draw. For their lack of intent, Root and Co. were severely criticised online, with the lead taken by former Indian batsman, Wasim Jaffer, who was evidently disappointed by the side for not even giving it a shot. If you won't even try to chase a target of 3.6 an over at home with no WTC points at stake, when will you ever try? Not a good advert for test cricket #EngvNZ@ECB_cricket pic.twitter.com/K4qzAhoe7L — Wasim Jaffer (@WasimJaffer14) June 6, 2021 “If you won't even try to chase a target of 3.6 an over at home with no WTC points at stake, when will you ever try? Not a good advert for test cricket,” he wrote while sharing a hilarious meme on Twitter. The rest of the spectators joined Jaffer in criticising England, many of whom using Rishabh Pant as their advocate of a winning mentality, especially after the incredible feats he had achieved in Australia during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar trophy. Waiting for @MichaelVaughan to defend his 3rd grade team.. 🤣🤣🤣 — Aman Sharma🇮🇳 (@sharmaaman7676) June 6, 2021 Thats why Pant’s heroics in Aus is highly rated inning: overseas conditions, world’s best bowling attack but he showed courage and chase it down the big total on day 5. If I remember he did hit 5 boundaries from Starc over. — Chintan (@cmshah7) June 6, 2021 The second Test begins on 10th June. However, Root, who is already short-staffed in the absence of Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes, will find himself looking for help as debutant and first Test star bowler Ollie Robinson has been banned from all formats over allegations of racism and sexism and the ECB is currently investigating his case. 25. India’s tour of Australia is considered by many the best overseas performance that the Men in Blue have pulled, especially in the longest format of the game. The series consisted of drama, excitement, some massive drawbacks, and some big emotional turmoil for a few of the players. Still, the squad endured, showed the kind of character of which real champions are made and ended up winning the historic four-match Test series that nobody had expected them to pull off. THANK YOU! 2-1 🇮🇳🇮🇳 #TeamIndia #AUSvIND pic.twitter.com/syKRSOgaWQ — BCCI (@BCCI) January 7, 2019 One of the biggest narratives from that season came in favour of pacer Mohammed Siraj boosted to Test cricket success, despite being considered just a back-up bowler when the series began. Within days of Siraj’s time in Australia, news came that he had lost his father. The BCCI were extremely supportive and even made arrangements for the cricketer to go back home and spend time with his family. But to credit Siraj’s courage and sheer determination, the 27-year old decided to stay back with the team and play for his country. From Test cap 298 to 300. Mohammad Siraj offers T Natarajan some advice learned from his brief time on the Test circuit. It is bound to affect their focus, their performance and the ability to be mentally present in the moment - all three things crucial to an athlete’s success or failure on the field. This is where head coach Ravi Shastri stepped in, arguably as the most justifiable father figure for Siraj and gave him the confidence to bowl like he was capable of. Ravi sir came to me and said ‘Tu test match khel, dekh tereko 5 wickets milega. Tere Daddy ka dua tera saath hoga (You play the test match. You will get 5 wickets as your father’s blessings will be with you). Match ke baad Ravi sir ne bahut khus hokar bola, tujhe bola tha na 5 wickets milega (I told that you will be getting five wickets). I became very confident after my coaches encouraged me in such a way,” Siraj told ABP news. View the full article
