  4. Bollywood has long been home to various filmy dynasties. There exist the Kapoors, the Khans and the Dutts, among others. And the common assumption is that life is easy once you’re born into such a clan. Abhay Deol is from one such filmy gharana. The Deols are no spring chickens, their name has been held in high regard in Bollywood since the 60s, thanks to the cinematic exploits of their patriarch, Dharmendra (Dharam Deol). © Abhay Deol The Deols had come to espouse the tough, rugged men from Bollywood’s halcyon years. With Abhay’s cousins Bobby and Sunny toeing the line set by their father, Dharmendra. But, Abhay Deol has always been different from the rest of his tribe. Whether it be through his artistic choices or his outspoken, yet articulate public persona, the younger Deol seemed to be cut from a different kind of cloth. View this post on Instagram In a recent interview Abhay put words to his insecurities and revealed how he never reached out to cousins Sunny and Bobby Deol for professional help even when his career was suffering. The Dev.D actor has long forged a reputation as an experimental actor, the poster boy of alternative cinema in the 2000s. But as we all know, Bollywood often tends to reward formulaic, masala cinema, which Abhay finds little to no interest in, and thus he ended up with little to no work. View this post on Instagram Films like Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, Dev.D and Manorama 6 Feet Under achieved cult status, but they weren’t the commercially viable cinema that the majority of Bollywood producers chased after. It was heartening to learn that Abhay Deol laid bare his diffidence in a recent interview with RJ Siddharth Kannan. He revealed how he used to view asking for help as a symptom of “weakness”, which is why he found it difficult to reach out to his cousins, Bobby and Sunny. He said, “I had always thought that to reach out is to be weak, handle it yourself. I no longer believe that, of course. But I think my lows were low because I never reached out to anyone. I always tried to handle things on my own.” Abhay does clarify that age has helped him change his perspective on such affairs, where he feels less pressure in asking for help. © Abhay Deol The Aisha actor said,“Now, the thing is, I’ve reached a point in my life where the highs and lows don’t affect me as much. Because I’ve been at it for a while. I’ve been on my own when I’ve been down low, and I’ve been on my own when I’ve been up high. All I know is that I don’t want to be on my own. That’s it. Being high, being low doesn’t matter. It’s just in communion, in community, having your tribe. I’ve been very fortunate. I met some wonderful people along the way. I have my community; some are family, some are friends like family.” More power to Abhay Deol for expressing his challenges with reaching out to help as it is something that the average desi guy faces as well. Keeping up a strong front is something that men in India are expressly encouraged to do. It’s time we left behind certain traditions in the past. View the full article
