“Karma Is A B**CH”: Better.com CEO Vishal Garg Taking Time Off After Firing 900 Employees Vishal Garg, the chief executive officer at Better.com is still reeling from the aftermath of his decision to lay off 900 employees without any warning, over a zoom call. vishal garg, “Blundered the execution” is what Garg admits to after facing flak from all quarters of the internet. He also said in a letter,”I realize that the way I communicated this news made a difficult situation worse.” The CEO seems to have had some sense knocked into him after his public display of apathy was captured by an unnamed employee at Better.com, having shared the video of their Zoom-based lay off on Tiktok, where it went viral. According to reports, the disgraced leader has taken time off with immediate effect. According to reports, the NYU alumnus’ decision was made after an email from the company’s board conveyed their unanimous decision to temporarily relieve him of his responsibilities. The email read, “Vishal and the Board wanted to provide Better employees an update given the very regrettable events over the last week. Vishal will be taking time off effective immediately.” © Vishal Garg Present chief financial officer, Kevin Ryan has been made in charge of running the company on a day-to-day basis, albeit with the board’s supervision. Reportedly, a third party firm has also been onboarded by Better.com to ensure a “a leadership and cultural assessment" is done. The digital mortgage company was founded in New York in 2016 after becoming the go-to platform for many to avail insurance products via its innovative platform. It still remains to be seen how this controversy affects Better.com’s plan to go public via their merger with Aurora Acquisition Corp. The deal was reportedly valued at $ 7.7 billion. © Vishal Garg The leadership and cultural audit may be able to iron out the kinks prevalent within the company’s working environment, as exposed by Vishal Garg’s very public faux pas. The board of directors said, “The recommendations of this assessment will be taken into account to build a long-term sustainable and positive culture at Better. We have much work to do and we hope that everyone can refocus on our customers and support each other to continue to build a great company and a company we can be proud of.” Hopefully, this entire incident serves as a reminder, and a warning, to cutthroat corporates who discard their employees without the slightest hesitation, all under the guise of ‘profit-seeking’. Potholes are a pervasive issue, especially in India. In fact, they are so familiar that we see at least a few potholes every five kilometres in our country. Only the size and the depth of the deadly pothole varies from area to area. Not just that, there have many death cases as well in the past. But there are some people who are taking matters into their own hands to fight this menace. No, we aren't talking about authorities, but this old couple from Hyderabad, Telangana that has been filling potholes for the last 11 years and have saved several lives. © iStock Many of us might hesitate at using our money for such causes. Still, Gangadhar Tilak Katnam and his wife, Venkateshwari Katnam, didn't think twice before spending money from their pockets to save others from accidents. The 73-year-old man is called the 'Road Doctor'. The man and his wife, who is 64-years-old, go on the roads in a car called 'Pothole Ambulance'. They then start filling holes wherever they find one. © Twitter/ANI In an interview, Gangadhar Katnam said, "Initially, I tried to complain about the issue with the police and the Municipality officials, but none of it was of any use. That is when I have decided to fill these potholes by myself." He further said that he was adamant about finding a possible solution for the problem after he witnessed several accidents on the road. Telangana: An elderly couple have been filling potholes in Hyderabad for past 11 years I shifted here after my retirement from Indian Railways. I saw accidents every day, due to potholes. I even took the matter with the concerned authority but it was not resolved: GT Katnam pic.twitter.com/tZiQlMKS8i — ANI (@ANI) July 10, 2021 Earlier, Mr Tilak was an employee in Indian Railways. He also worked as a software engineer in a software company. But that didn't stop him from doing the good work. He quit his job and was dedicated to bringing a change as he continued to fill potholes in the city. When he was asked about funds for the cause, he said, "I am managing the finances of this initiative from the pension that I receive. All the material that is required for the task is bought using money from my pension. For the last 11 years, I was able to fill nearly about 2,030 potholes in and across the city and spent about Rs 40 lakh on it." © Twitter/ANI After looking at his work, even some government officials joined the team and helped him with the required tools and materials. Gangadhar also has an organisation named 'Sramadhan'. He further spoke about how he would never ask for money or donations. However, he mentioned that if people voluntarily help fill the potholes, he would appreciate that better. The Road Doctor says that problems can be resolved easily if everyone starts helping. As soon as the news went live, people were enraged and started blaming the authorities for not fixing the prolonged issue. Its a collective shame for PWD & Road Construction department of Telangana. As well as Telangana Govt. — Vikrant ~ विक्रांत (@vikrantkumar) July 11, 2021Such a shame that Aam Aadmi has to roll up his/hers sleeves and to rectify state problem..
