Comedian Vir Das recently offended the transgender community and was criticized for his joke that made fun of gender pronouns and spoke inappropriately about transgender persons. In the fifth episode of his #TenonTen series, he spoke about it and received heavy backlash. In the episode, he said, “I am not because Transpeople have the courage to discard an organ if it isn't working properly. For them... or a man who used to be a woman and the kid is like... it just means that your kids will have a longer chapter in school when they learn pronouns.” He did accept his mistake and owned up to the fact that he completely messed it up. In the statement issued online, he thanked a person from the queer community for ‘calling him in’, and wrote, “I did a joke on the new ten on ten-episode that my friends in the Trans community felt hurt by. I see why. My intent at the moment was to say Trans people have the courage the Govt never ever could and it was set up wrong and uninformed.” “I messed up. It had the opposite effect and trivialized your struggle. Articulating my intent effectively is my responsibility, not yours. I got that joke wrong. Plain and simple. No buts,” he added. View this post on Instagram “Sometimes (a lot) people are upset because the joke really worked, sometimes because the joke doesn’t. My audience understands comedy, they can take a joke. So, when they talk to me, I listen. I’d like to be an artist who unabashedly deliberately uncomfortably pushes the line every single day, and never stops acknowledging his audience, always using their voice as his guide. A conversation, where the focus is on them, always,” he stated. “Amaan, thank you for your message. Know that I see you, I heard you, your struggle. I’m in this conversation, I’ll always listen and you will always inform my comedy,” he wrote. He then posted a screenshot of the message Amaan had sent to him. He had written, “Hey Vir. I’ve been a big fan of your comedy and your work (Excluding Mastizade lmao) for a long time now. I’m a queer individual who identifies as non-binary. I see your reaction to the calling out of your mistakes and I feel like someone has to call you in, instead.” They added, “When you feel like you’re being attacked, it’s very easy to get defensive. And reactionary. You of all people know punching up is how comedy works, and yet you chose to punch down, if only as a setup. I hope you understand. – A slightly hurt fan, Amaan.” View this post on Instagram Vir also shared the screenshot of his response to Amaan that read, “Amaan I hope it's alright that I am replying to you. You’re correct about the joke, and I’m so sorry it made you feel hurt. I am going to put a statement out, but waiting till everyone calms down so they know it's thought out and genuine. If you know my work, you know the intent is never ever to hurt. Give it a minute and I will definitely respond.” People have appreciated his gesture and lauded him for his courage. © Twitter © Twitter © Twitter © Twitter We live in the 21st century where people should be more inclusive of people's individualities and their sexuality too. Though we are far from where we want to be in this regard, it's heartening to see state governments taking initiatives to give transgenders some recognition and it would go a long way if we comedians and artists encouraged the same. Nonetheless, what do you have to say about the entire fiasco? Let us know in the comments section below. View the full article

Luxurious London mansion on sale for 18 million pounds - bitcoin accepted

A multi-million pound London mansion, due to go on sale this month, could make British property history - by selling for the digital currency bitcoin. Photo: Reuters file LONDON: A multi-million pound London mansion, due to go on sale this month, could make British property history - by selling for the digital currency bitcoin. Wealth management firm London Wall is selling the six-storey house in the trendy Notting Hill district in west London for 18 million pounds ($24 million) and hopes to find a buyer willing to pay in the biggest and best-known cryptocurrency. ?We hope this will start a trend because we believe in the concept of bitcoin as a fair and transparent method of moving money around the world without having to rely on third parties,? Ned El-Imad, a partner in the firm, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Bitcoin is a digital currency that enables individuals to transfer value to each other and pay for goods and services, bypassing banks and the mainstream financial system. El-Imad said payment in physical currencies, such as pounds sterling, would be accepted but the firm hopes to conduct the transaction in bitcoin to show investors that buying property with digital currencies is a ?no-fuss? way to do business. London Wall, which bought the mansion for 9.5 million pounds about three years ago, is planning to put the stucco-fronted property on the market in the next two weeks after converting it from multiple flats into a single residence. El-Imad said his firm hoped property purchases could be reformed through the use of blockchain, the technology that underpins bitcoin. But there are still hurdles to overcome, such as how to pay commission to estate agents and stamp duty - a property tax payable to the British government - which would amount to nearly two million pounds on the Notting Hill property. Bitcoin has been associated with tax evasion and trafficking of both drugs and people but London Wall said it had hired advisors to help identify the source of a buyer?s funds to avoid money-laundering. Bitcoin rose above $5,000 for the first time last week, chalking up a more than fivefold increase this year as investors shrugged off warnings on the risks of buying into the booming digital currency market. At the current exchange rate, the mansion?s price is equivalent to about 4,200 bitcoins. Despite Bitcoin?s popularity, property transactions are still rare, partly because the digital currency is volatile and any delay in converting it into physical money could be costly. Savills, one of Britain's biggest estate agents, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation it had not yet encountered demand for property transactions in bitcoins. -
SC verdict accepted despite reservations: Asfandyar Wali Khan

PESHAWAR: Awami National Party President Asfandyar Wali Khan said on Saturday that he has accepted Supreme Court`s verdict disqualifying Nawaz Sharif despite having serious reservations regarding it. Speaking to journalists, Khan said that he hopes his reservations are proved wrong in the future. He also requested the media and the politicians to focus on real issues now that the Panama Papers case has reached its logical conclusion. ?I request the political leadership of the country to not give their authority to the judiciary as the parliament will loose its importance through such actions,? he said. ?We will always maintain our struggle for the supremacy of parliament and will not let democracy get derailed the country.? The ANP chief further said that Article 62,63 of the Constitution should be amended to its original form by revoking clauses which were added in during the regime of General Zia. Khan said that his party wanted to amend the articles through the 18th Amendment, however, the party which opposed the move at the time was PML-N. ?Today he has become a victim of the same article,? said the ANP president.
