  9. The pandemic has really changed the definition of privilege. If you are healthy and employed this year, you are privileged. And, so many people aren't as lucky. As Covid-19 took over the world in 2020, a lockdown was imposed almost everywhere and that left lakhs and lakhs of people without a job and a means to survive. People persevered throughout those months and tried to make the best of the situation. One shining example of that is Akshay Parkar. Once a chef working at Taj Group of Hotels and international cruises, he found himself without a job during the pandemic. © Facebook/Akshay Parkar Making the best of the situation - and his skills - he started selling biryani in a road-side stall in Mumbai. Who wouldn't want the most accessible 5-star biryani? This deserves so much respect, for real. Talking about being the sole breadwinner of the house, the 29-year-old said, "My parents have been ill for a while now. My mother has undergone two operations for a fractured knee and an elbow injury. My father lost his job after the flour mills closed down and he has been recuperating from tuberculosis for years." © Facebook/Akshay Parkar He also talked about how almost all his earnings were spent on his parents' medical bills - "I earned $1,000 a month. But all my savings were spent on my parents’ medical treatment. With their advanced age and prior health conditions, my parents were not eligible for the medical insurance policy, making the treatment more expensive." With very little savings and no job, he knew he needed to do something to earn money for himself and his parents. That's how he decided to put his cooking skills to good use. © Facebook/Akshay Parkar He said, "A vada pav snack vendor from my neighbourhood went out of business and was willing to hand over his business space to me. I decided to cook the biryani at home and sell it during the evenings on the street." What makes his food stand out from the other vendors is that he learned how to make all this food at a 5-star level and that's what he's bringing to the streets. He said, "The customers are higher during the weekends, and I am starting to roll out small profits. My biryani’s selling point is that I cook from the recipes I’ve learned at 5-star hotels, working alongside international chefs. The same quality is maintained, even if it is being sold on the road." © Facebook/Akshay Parkar While he had a slow start, after getting help from his friends in spreading the word, things are looking up. In fact, now he's also decided to just stay here and expand on his business instead of sailing the seas again. Lastly, he said, "I have decided to continue growing the business here rather than going back to my glamorous job. My parents also need me, considering their medical conditions, and I cannot take the risk of returning to the seas." © Facebook/Akshay Parkar Good for him, and hopefully, he'll soon be able to expand his business. His stall is located around the star mall area of Dadar, Mumbai. If you're near that area, go check out Akshay's stall and help the talented chef out! View the full article
  10. Making his debut in 2016, Jasprit Bumrah first grabbed eyeballs for his unorthodox action. Armed with an anomalous, sling-arm action and natural pace, the sight of Bumrah steaming in to bowl had everyone wondering whether it was really legal to bowl like that. But, the more we got to see of this speedster, the better he got with his bowling skills. Today, he is not just some guy who bowls with a weird action, rather, the 26-year-old has matured enough to become a vital cog in the Indian bowling department. His deceit in line and length and variation in speed has established him as one of the most effective bowlers in the death overs in international cricket. And, needless to say, he has been an asset that Team India cannot do without. Thus, when Team India landed in Australia for their much-anticipated tour, a lot was expected from the right-arm seamer. Playing in hostile conditions and forced to make do with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, India desperately needed the likes of Bumrah and Mohammed Shami to spearhead the bowling attack against the Aussies. But, what really unfolded in the 1st ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) didn't just put India on the back foot, but also drew flak from fans. © AP Kickstarting the tour with the ODI series, India were surely eager to get off with a winning start at Sydney but they were immediately put under pressure by some slambang batting from the marauding Australian batsmen. Opting to bat, Australia romped their way to a mammoth total of 374 runs - courtesy Aaron Finch (114), Steve Smith (105) and Glenn Maxwell (45). Jasprit Bumrah took a wicket after 282 balls in ODIs. The last time an India bowler had a longer dry spell between two wickets was Praveen Kumar (283 balls in year 2008). #AusvInd — Mazher Arshad (@MazherArshad) November 27, 2020 Barring Shami (3-59), it was a forgettable outing for the Indian bowling unit. The likes of Yuzvendra Chahal (1-89) and Navdeep Saini (1-83) proved to be the most expensive amongst the lot. But, it was Bumrah's mediocre figures of 1-73, conceding at 7.30 runs an over, that really baffled the cricket fans. © AP For a bowler who had a sensational IPL 2020 season, finishing in the list of leading wicket-takers with 27 scalps to his name, Bumrah looked like a shadow of himself at the SCG. Apart from going for boundaries, Bumrah also lacked discipline, bowling two wides and a no-ball. It was his ordinary performance that led to some criticism from fans on social media.
