  1. Apple created waves around the internet last year by becoming the world's first trillion dollar tech company. Then Amazon joined Apple's new-found trillionaire's club in just a month, becoming the second US-based company to cross the mark. Now, Microsoft has become the third US company to pass the market cap of $1 trillion after a jump in stock price following strong fiscal Q3 earnings. Yes, the tech company led by Satya Nadella briefly topped $1 trillion in value for the first time after executives predicted continued growth for its cloud computing business. © Google Stock Microsoft's stock price opened at $130 per share yesterday, which was up around 4-per cent from the closing price the day before. It swooped past Apple Inc's $980 billion market capitalization. The credit for Microsoft's immense stock growth goes to its cloud business. Azure, Microsoft's flagship cloud product competes with Amazon Web Services (AWS), who is a market leader. Azure is currently second behind Amazon, but it's ahead of Google's offering. © Microsoft Microsoft was once heavily reliant on the Windows operating system but things started changing once Satya Nadella took over as the Chief Executive. The company has seen significant growth in selling cloud-based services. It is, however, worth pointing out that Microsoft's market cap has dipped below the $1 Trillion mark. At the time of writing this, the market cap is currently standing at $990.87B. However, it's more than that of Apple, which currently sits at $967.95B.
  2. 'Game Of Thrones' is in the final season as the show comes to a close in about a month. The fantasy show is one of the most pirated TV series on the planet and is also one of the reasons for its major success. The Season premiere of the show was leaked online an hour earlier by DirectTV last week; however, the second episode was leaked well in advance. © HBO The second episode of GOT Season 8 was leaked by none other than Amazon Prime as it was green-lit to go live on Amazon Prime Germany, 8 hours before the world premiere. The leak was taken down but many got to see the entire episode way before it even came to the airwaves — including us. The episode was later uploaded on many websites and torrent posters with spoilers about the episode starting to leak on social media. © HBO HBO went to great lengths to keep the final show a secret such as dodging drones during filming, only letting the cast read some chunks of the script and stop offering screeners to press for this season. Screeners are usually leaked online thanks to some rogue journalist who cannot fight the temptation. However, this time around the leak came from Amazon Prime, the streaming giant partnered with HBO for GOT in Germany. We have seen episodes leaked by partners before; however, HBO has also been victim to leaks because of their own mistakes. © HBO The leaked episode was spotted in the back pages of Reddit and then was shared across all social media platforms. Some die-hard GOT fans waited for the full HD version of the new episode but there were some fans who could not wait. GOT premieres each episode globally at the same time. However, it does get hard to manage so many regions. Leaks are inevitable and we suspect that this will not be the last leak for the final season.
  3. Apple's AirPods are now an iconic piece of hardware that has now become more of a status symbol. Even though it was met with much criticism at launch, the cultural impact of these earbuds can't be ignored. We've already seen companies like Samsung trying to get a piece of the pie with Galaxy Buds and now it's Amazon's turn. © MensXP/Akshay Bhalla According to a report from Bloomberg, Amazon is now looking to make their own version of AirPods that will also have support for Alexa. The true wireless earphones are expected to look exactly like the AirPods but will apparently have better sound. Apple already launched the new Powerbeats Pro to further their hold in the true wireless market with other companies trying to replicate Apple's success. The report said “the Seattle-based e-commerce giant is readying earbuds with built-in Alexa access for as early as the second half of this year, according to people with knowledge of the plans. The headphones will look and act similar to AirPods, but people working on the product inside Amazon are striving for better audio quality, the people said. Like the AirPods, the Amazon earbuds are designed to sit inside users' ears without clips around the ear.” © Apple Amazon's earbuds are expected to work just like Echo products where users will be able to fire up the digital assistant by saying “Alexa”. Users will need to be connected to the internet via an Android or iOS device in order to use the digital assistant. Just like the AirPods, Amazon's wireless earbuds will come with a charging case and will be available in two colours i.e. grey and black. Amazon's earbuds are expected to launch sometime in 2019 and we can expect it to be priced similar to the AirPods. Source: Bloomberg
  4. One of the biggest fears to live by in the man-made digital age, is fearing the leakage of classified or fragile information, from various digital mediums. A bigger fear than that is fearing the leakage of nude pictures that someone's ex may have of them, on a digital platform. Yes, we live in such a disruptive age, that it just takes a click for something like that ever happen. © Twitter Leaking someone's nudes digitally also makes for the best blackmail till date and it's a scary ordeal TBH. If you don't believe me, you can surely ask Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who actually chose to say 'no' to blackmail, only to wind up with a potential scandal in hand, after he publicly announced his divorce from his long-time wife MacKenzie. Bezos has publicly claimed that a local tabloid is blackmailing him with steamy leaked photos of him to his recent 'lover', and he definitely won't succumb to any form of blackmail, whatsoever. © Pintrest On a personal blog post, Besoz said that the 'National Enquirer' is threatening to publish his 'intimate photos' and that he has chosen to reveal the information about the threats rather than 'capitulate to extortion and blackmail'. The blog entry is titled 'No Thank you Mr. Pecker', and in it, Bezos is accusing the local tabloid of threatening him to publish intimate photos of him with Lauren Sanchez, the reporter with whom he was having an affair. I've written a post about developments with the National Enquirer and its parent company, AMI. You can find it here: https://t.co/G1ykJAPPwy — Jeff Bezos (@JeffBezos) 7 February 2019 Bezos believes the publication thinks the pictures were blackmail-worthy because they were perfect to tarnish the richest man's reputation amidst the Amazon stakeholders. Bezos has hired an investigator to further figure how the tabloid got hold of his intimate pictures in the first place. But the big question is, why would the National Enquirer blackmail him anyway? © Instagram According to Bezos, the parent company of the tabloid- American Media Inc. wants the Amazon chief to admit publicly that their investigation into his personal life was never "politically motivated or influenced by political forces". By now we all know the National Enquirer carried out a detailed investigation into Bezos' affair, which eventually led to his marriage ending, but we're not sure how any of it was influenced politically though. The National Enquirer claimed it had evidence that Bezos was "whisking his mistress off to exotic destinations on his $65 million private jet." "Something unusual happened to me yesterday. Actually, for me, it wasn't just unusual? - it was a first. I was made an offer I couldn't refuse. Or at least that's what the top people at the National Enquirer thought. I'm glad they thought that, because it emboldened them to put it all in writing," Bezos wrote. "Rather than capitulate to extortion and blackmail, I've decided to publish exactly what they sent me, despite the personal cost and embarrassment they threaten," Jeff Bezos states in his blog post. © Twitter The tabloid holds photos of Bezos in his briefs, naked selfies and an explicit dick picture. One of the emails sent to Bezos by AMI reads- "If your client agrees to cease and desist such defamatory behaviour, we are willing to engage in constructive conversations regarding the texts and photos which we have in our possession," To which Bezos replies, in his blog post "Well, that [the email] got my attention but not in the way they likely hoped. Any personal embarrassment AMI could cause me takes a back seat because there's a much more important matter involved here. If in my position I can't stand up to this kind of extortion, how many people can?" © Twitter As of now, Bezos has decided to run the risk of the tabloid leaking his nudes, in order to publicise the AMIs extortion practices and show the world how they really do business. I think it's a mighty brave move, Mr CEO. He adds- "Be assured, no real journalists ever propose anything like what is happening here. Nothing I might write here could tell the National Enquirer story as eloquently as their own words."
  5. Amazon has started removing a wide array of products from its website in India after the country's new e-commerce policy kicks in from today. A lot of exclusive products and brands have disappeared from the marketplace since the company has no option, but to comply with the new norms. In December, the Indian Government modified foreign direct investment (FDI) rules for the e-commerce sector, and this has highly disrupted the sales model of Amazon and Flipkart. To start with, marketplaces can no longer sell products exclusively on their platform. So, every brand that was earlier closely associated with the company, has been removed from the platform. © Reuters The new investment rules bar online retailers from selling products via vendors in which they have an equity interest. Numerous products from sellers like Cloudtail are no longer available on the website since Amazon has an equity stake in the seller. Even products from Shopper's Stop have been removed because Amazon owns five per cent stake in the retail label. Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart have tried to lobby against the new rules, but to no avail. In fact, Amazon's own line of Echo speakers has been taken off the shelf. Amazon had written to the Indian Government asking for a four-month extension to comply with the new rules, a company spokesperson said. But, there has no update on the proposal's consideration from the authorities. © Reuters Amazon has warned of widespread disruption due to the new policy and according to Reuters, the policy could "have undesirable impacts on the continued growth of e-commerce in India." Flipkart said that it was "disappointed that the government has decided to implement the regulation changes at such haste," but said it was committed to complying with the new rules. © Nikkei Asian Review The new policy comes amid intense lobbying by India's small and medium scale enterprises who have been most hit due to the marketplaces. They accuse the platforms of stockpiling goods at wholesale rates and then offering deep discounts to grow sales. The Confederation of All India Traders, which says it represents more than 70 million local retailers, warned the government against granting an extension on the enforcement of the new policy. Direct changes on Flipkart's website remain unclear right now, but we're sure a lot of exclusive apparel labels are going to disappear soon. The policy has received a mixed response since smaller traders are happy with the speed bump. Nationalists believe foreign marketplaces were playing around FDI rules to get a foothold, and in return damaging the country's existing merchants. Update: Amazon has reached out to confirm that Echo speakers and a few other products are now back on the website, and available for purchase.
  6. Amazon will be using self-driving robots to deliver packages in the near future but testing has already begun in Seattle. It was developed at Amazon's R&D lab and is designed to avoid pedestrians, pets or anything else in its path. In theory, it works similar to the suitcase that follows you around. It sort of resembles a small Ice Box which will house packages inside it for Amazon customers. © Amazon Amazon says “the devices will autonomously follow their delivery route but will initially be accompanied by an Amazon employee. We developed Amazon Scout at our research and development lab in Seattle, ensuring the devices can safely and efficiently navigate around pets, pedestrians and anything else in their path." © Amazon The robot is called “Amazon Scout” and can roll on sidewalks that can navigate around obstacles. At the moment, Amazon will use six robots to make deliveries this week; although it will be accompanied by an Amazon employee. The robot will have a few hurdles to face such as extreme weather conditions, steep inclines, curbs and other engineering challenges, which is why it's not certain when we can see it being used in the mainstream places. Previously, Amazon was testing out drones for delivering packages; however, we have not seen that idea come to fruition as of yet. © YouTube Amazon already uses robots to move inventory in their warehouses. However, considering those robots have a pre-defined path, using robots in the real world can be risky. Having said that, Amazon is not the only company tapping into robot delivery as other startups are also looking into this technology. Amazon Scout, on the other hand, cannot replace trucks that carry loads of packages. However, it can be used at the last phase of delivery. If you want to know how the delivery robot will work, you can watch the video below:
  7. Amazon and Flipkart will suffer a big blow as the government has barred them from selling their own goods while also putting an end to deep discounts and cashback schemes offered by them. Both the companies are facing a new ban from selling products from companies in which they have an equity interest, according to Reuters. The government, in a statement, said that these companies will also be prevented from entering into exclusive agreements with sellers. The marketplaces will be barred from selling products from companies in which they have an equity interest. The new rules are set to become effective starting February 1. The government says these marketplaces purchase goods in bulk through wholesale units and in turn sell them via select sellers with whom they have an agreement. © Reuters “An entity having equity participation by e-commerce marketplace entity or its group companies, or having control on its inventory by e-commerce marketplace entity or its group companies, will not be permitted to sell its products on the platform run by such marketplace entity,” the commerce ministry said in a statement. These agreements include partnerships with phone makers like Xiaomi and OPPO, who exclusively sell their products via these marketplaces. This shall be better for the end consumer as well because you won't have to forcefully stick with one marketplace. If a phone maker wants to sell its phones, you'll have the option to select your marketplace or seller. © Bloomberg According to the new rules, "inventory of a vendor will be deemed to be controlled by e-commerce marketplace entity if more than 25 percent of purchases of such vendor is from the marketplace entity or its group companies". According to the current policy, 100 percent FDI is permitted in marketplaces and e-commerce activities. But barred from inventory-based activities. © VCCirlce This also means Amazon will have to keep a check on its close partner Cloudtail and Appario. All India Online Vendors Association (AIOVA) filed a similar petition against Flipkart in May, alleging a violation of competition rules through preferential treatment for select sellers. This is one reason why Flipkart reduced its reliance on WS Retail in the last few years. Cloudtail is a joint venture of Amazon and Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy's Catamaran Ventures that is among the largest sellers on Amazon India's platform.
  8. Online shopping has now become an integral part of our life with Amazon leading the way. Whether it's a Rs 100 coffee pouch or Rs 1,00,000 smartphone, everything is available online. With urban life getting even more stressful due to a population boom and crumbling infrastructure, more and more people are opting to do their holiday shopping online instead of walking into a brick and mortar store. This explosion in online shopping has led to "porch pirates" and "stoop surfers" who swipe holiday packages from unsuspecting residents. In the USA, the courier delivery is often left on the porch or mailbox when someone isn't present to physically accept it. © Reuters To counter these thieves, Police in Jersey City have been placing fake Amazon packages outside people's homes to catch thieves. These Amazon packages are insight of cameras near the home and also equipped with GPS devices to track the robber's movements. Police and Amazon picked locations for the sting operation using Jersey City crime statistics and maps of theft locations provided by Amazon. Jersey City police captain James Crecco, who is overseeing the mission, told the AP it only took three minutes for one bait package to be stolen earlier this week. “We thought it was a mistake at first,” he said, adding that the suspect was caught. © AP News Exact figures on porch thefts are hard to come by though. Amazon uses its own logistics network as well as relies on UPS and FedEx for last-mile delivery. Unfortunately, all the concerned companies have declined to share figures. Amazon is offering the necessary equipment for free to the Jersey City program. “Most of the package thefts we've made arrests on revolving around (closed-circuit TV) or private surveillance cameras that give us a still image,” Jersey City Police Chief Michael Kelly said. “With the bait packages, some will be under video surveillance, and some will have GPS.” © Reuters The Jersey City police hope to catch thieves before they snatch up someone's holiday gifts. The program has undergone legal review and was approved by the local prosecutor. To prevent theft, users also have the option of purchasing a parcel box that allows only the owner and delivery person access. Amazon Key Smart Lock is one such product and has proven to be useful on most occasions. Source: AP News
  9. The world often functions in strange ways and takes us by surprise. But it's also its inhabitants who can be equally weird when it comes to unparalleled levels of strangeness. So, no matter how old you might be, you must have already come across a zillion instances when humans have acted way surprisingly than is normally acceptable in our society. But, what about other species who cohabit with us on this planet? Though no match to the level of weirdness humans have attained so far, animals and birds have also joined the bandwagon of strangeness every once in a while, just like this African grey parrot, Rocco. After witnessing the abusive parrot who gave it off to the firefighter trying to rescue it, meet this latest entrant into the scene. This errant African grey parrot named Rocco recently discovered how to operate his owner's Alexa, and used the device to place multiple orders on Amazon, thereby catching a lot of public attention. © PCMag & homeoftalkingbirds According to the DailyMail, it all started when people at the National Animal Welfare Trust sanctuary decided to do something about Rocco, fearing its bad behaviour would upset visitors. That is when a worker named Marion Wischnewski decided to take Rocco in and brought him to his house in Oxfordshire. Soon, the mischievous parrot managed to “befriend” Alexa and used his species' natural ability of mimicking voices to place orders on Amazon with his “friend's” help. However as per a Sunday Times report, owing to the parental lock on Wischnewski's Amazon account, the purchases weren't successful. But don't be fooled into believing that Rocco is just an innocent bird who doesn't know what it's doing, because apart from figuring out how to order goodies on Amazon, he can also use Alexa to play music, tell him jokes and even makes conversations! WHAA?!

  11. Amazon is one of the world's wealthiest companies and is now expanding their headquarters to two other cities in the United States. However, founder Jeff Bezos had a meeting with his employees where he was asked tough questions regarding the company's future. © YouTube An employee wanted to know more about Amazon's direction and Bezos gave a reply that deems possible. Bezos replied "Amazon is not too big to fail. In fact, I predict one day Amazon will fail. Amazon will go bankrupt. If you look at large companies, their lifespans tend to be 30-plus years, not hundred-plus years," Bezos said. CNBC reported the conversation after hearing a recording of the meeting. He added that everyone's goal at Amazon is to "prolong that demise”. He suggested that this can be achieved by “obsessing over customers”. He continued to add that "If we start to focus on ourselves, instead of focusing on our customers, that will be the beginning of the end. We have to try and delay that day for as long as possible," he said. © YouTube Amazon has been expanding the company's business and success at a pace that is highly unprecedented. The core retail business continues to grow; however, the company's major revenue source is its dominant position in cloud-computing i.e. Amazon Web Services. Amazon's workforce has grown to over 600,000 employees in the last eight years and the rising stock price has made it a trillion dollar company. Last month, a report suggests Amazon raised the minimum wage for all employees putting the company a step ahead of its rivals like Target, Walmart and others.

  13. If you are one of those who find Netflix unreasonably costly, then you should go for Amazon Prime. With Rs 999 a year, it's quite cheap and some of its content also is much better than the overrated shows of Netflix. I can give you '13 reasons why' Amazon Prime is better than Netflix but for now, let's see some of its shows which are lesser known but still a great watch: 1. Doctor Foster © BBC One You must have heard the phrase 'A jealous woman does better research than FBI.' This series somewhat shows that, except here, our protagonist, Dr. Foster isn't jealous but suspects that her husband might be cheating on her. It's one of the shows which brilliantly offer the 'what-would-happen-next' thrill. You will see brilliant performances by the cast, great direction, and very subtle but engaging plot twists. With an IMDB rating of 8, this drama is a must watch. 2. Coupling © BBC This series is an adult version of FRIENDS. I'm not saying it is as good, but it will definitely make you laugh. The entire series revolves around a group of friends who often meet in a bar to discuss aspects of life, relationships, ***, and everything else. Rated 8.6 at IMDB, this one is one hell of a ***-comedy. 3. The Grand Tour © Amazon Prime Video The Grand Tour is strictly for the ones who are fond of adventure and automobiles, as it offers you both. Standing tall at 9.1 IMDB rating, the show is hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond. They travel the globe driving the cars that will make you curse your job. It has amazingly great cinematography and this show is a must watch for driving enthusiasts. 4. The Night Manager © BBC This is one of the best series that I've watched in the recent times. I was skeptical about it but when I found out that our beloved Dr. House is playing the role of an antagonist, I just had to watch it. And I am glad I did! The series revolves around a night manager of a hotel who tries to bring down the empire of an arms dealer. It has suspense, drama, great acting, and 'at-the-edge-to-my-seat' kind of thrill. 5. The Man In The High Castle © Amazon Studios If you're a history buff, then you should watch this. The series shows what life would have been had the Nazis won the World War II. Showing the alternate universe, this series has brilliant direction & a great story-line. Watch this show to enter in the world of Hitler. 6. This Is Us © NBC One word for this series – beautiful! This is us is a story of a set of triplets which shows their life, how 'different' they are, their struggles, and their love for each other. The plot keeps on jumping from past to present and present to past, showing every aspect of their lives. It has comedy, drama, romance and an 8.8 IMDB rating. Don't miss it.
  14. Amazon has been trying to integrate Alexa in almost every other gadget. Starting with phones, the company has not only integrated it into its Fire HD line of tablets but also third-party mobile phones. It took it a step further by launching the Echo line of smart speakers. Amazon's designs on smart home domination and beyond is nothing new and is no different from Apple, Google, or Samsung. © Twitter / Robotodd The key difference here is, Apple makes products for the premium segment of the market, while Amazon is targeting every one of us. Amazon has unveiled a torrent of new products and this now includes a smart Microwave. This marks the start of the company's journey in making everything smart, or let's say smarter. © Amazon The integration of voice controls into nearly any household item you can think of underscores Amazon's ambitions to own the voice and the digital command industry, that is expected to boom in the coming few years. Why deal with the settings and menu's when you can simply command, and the system will understand? In addition to a microwave, Amazon has also announced an Alexa enabled wall clock. These appliances are basically speaker-less Echo devices that connect with speakers made by other manufacturers including Bose. Creating a bigger universe of Alexa-powered products is an increasingly important goal for Amazon. © Twitter / Robotodd Coming back to the microwave, it shall start shipping from November, and the user can give commands like “Alexa, reheat my coffee,” or “Alexa, defrost a potato,”. Like we've said earlier, the company wants to have market domination right now and is targeting every kind of user, hence the price has been kept under check, at US$ 59.99 (Rs 4,300). One thing you need to keep in mind is, Alexa isn't built into the microwave. So, for the hands-free control, you'll need a compatible Echo speaker paired to the microwave. Amazon has taken this a step further by integrating an automatic reordering system. This way, when you're running low on popcorn, the company's Dash Replenishment technology will kick in and order a new batch for you. © Amazon Amazon also unveiled Echo Auto that can turn on the lights in your house automatically, the moment you pull into your driveway. It's just a small device you can keep on your car's dashboard and it will act like an extension to your remote operated garage door.
  15. Google is a household name around the globe, everyone knows it, and uses it. The company is a lot more than just a search engine, everyone uses Android, Gmail, YouTube, and many more apps, all belonging to Google. In a similar way, Amazon too has expanded rapidly and made in-roads to many new markets. Unlike Google, Amazon is dependent on both online as well as offline business operations. While Google is the world's largest advertising company, Amazon is valued at almost US$ 1 trillion, right next to Apple. Now considering the Indian market, the two companies have made it large here locally. © Reuters Since its entry in the country in 2013, Amazon has quickly expanded its operations and holds 30 per cent e-commerce market share. The company has long surpassed the homegrown Flipkart, completely knocked out Snapdeal, and all other smaller players are either being acquired or going bust. Google being an Internet company does not depend on offline operations, but has managed to focus on the market by making practical products like Google Pay, Files Go, RailWire, and on a wider spectrum the Android Go platform. Advertising revenue from the country is booming, Google Cloud is expanding its data centres, and even the Pixel and Android One phones are selling like hot cakes. © IndianExpress Now, let's have a look at another American company that has been in the country for more than a decade and is currently the most valued in the world, Apple. Even Apple holds an enormous amount of brand recognition in India, but where are the sales? For years the behemoth has said it's serious about India and wants to play a bigger role, but year after year we see no change. In fact, Apple's market share is down to just 1 per cent in Q2 2018, according to Counterpoint Research. We can argue that India is a developing country and the majority of the sales are from the budget and midrange segments, but there is still a much bigger premium market than just 1 per cent. This becomes even more evident when we see OnePlus and Samsung selling their top-tier devices in huge quantities. © Samsung Now, the argument shifts. How can we compare a OnePlus or Samsung flagship with Apple? Globally, yes we can. But, not in India. The price difference is too big. To put this in perspective, the Note 9 costs Rs 67,900 while the iPhone Xs starts at INR 99,900. The two are supposed to be around the same price segment, but Apple has created a new bubble for itself, the ultra-premium segment. And this is where the problem lies. Apple's constant ignorance of the market. They say they care, but their actions say a different story. It's easy to blame India's 20 per cent import duty for the price difference, but after all these years, every company has found a solution, Make in India. Everyone does it, so does Apple, but only the iPhone SE and iPhone 6. I really doubt they'll make the flagships anytime soon, while on the other hand Samsung has a huge facility in Noida and is churning out phones that also get exported. © Twitter/Narendra Modi Google is being smarter as well, they don't have the scale to produce locally, but to stay relevant and rational, they take a hit on the pocket in terms of premium. That's what you'd expect a giant to do, especially in the beginning. Also, the Pixel is just one of many Google products, not the primary revenue source. Why is Apple not able to simply throw around money in India and expand rapidly? Because it always has run-ins with the government. Apple wants to directly operate stores in the country, meaning direct selling, not being dependent on the resellers. But the country's law says it needs to produce 30 per cent of its products in the country before it received approval to open retail stores. © 9to5Mac The company was stuck in a year-long disagreement with TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) over their reluctance to support the watchdog's do-not-disturb (DND) app. Apple had refused to carry TRAI's DND app on its App Store, saying it accesses a user's calls and message logs, which is against its privacy policy. According to an August report, the two have finally come to an agreement with the rollout of iOS 12. If these weren't enough, the company has also put Apple Pay on hold because the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) has made data localisation compulsory for companies to set up a payment service in India. While this is a minor setback and even Amazon is affected, Apple is facing multiple issues on multiple fronts. Quite honestly, Apple has the capability to breach the market and establish itself rapidly just like Amazon and Google. But, the company already faces too many hurdles.
  16. In August, Apple passed the US$ 1 trillion mark in terms of stock market value. And today, after just thirty-three days, Amazon has accomplished the same feat. Amazon's shares rose as much as 1.9 per cent, sprinting past the milestone. Jeff Bezos started Amazon in 1994 as a book-selling platform and since then, the company has transformed itself into an e-commerce mammoth that literally sells everything in multiple markets. The company's success has made Bezos the wealthiest person on this planet with a net worth of almost US$ 150 billion. © Reuters Amazon currently has more than 5,75,000 employees and rakes in more than US$ 200 billion in annual sales. When compared to other huge companies, the e-commerce company is fairly young and has managed to successfully diversify its business. Bezos launched a new cloud-computing business division in 2006 called Amazon Web Services (AWS), the business has been an astounding success and further proved how long-term the vision is. Having its own computing infrastructure also gave Amazon a lot of room to experiment with its own services. In the recent years, the company has gotten into the streaming business as well and bundled the same with its Prime membership offering. © YouTube While the stock market-based valuation is very dynamic and at the end of the trading day, the company's valuation slipped to $988.8 billion, it is still a remarkable statement of how quickly the 24-year-old company has grown. The constant rise in share prices also means investors are confident about its prospects Apple and Amazon aren't the first companies to join the trillion-dollar club though, as energy company PetroChina Co. briefly crossed that valuation in late 2007 but slipped back due to reducing oil prices and the oncoming 2008 financial crisis. © BCCL Technology stocks have been on a constant rise this year though, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Netflix have been seen a consistent rise in their share price and analysts are bullish about them paying off in the longer run. Morgan Stanley has recently raised its target price for Amazon's share to US$ 2,500, valuing the company at US$ 1.2 trillion. The stock closed at US$ 2,039 on September 4. Source: Bloomberg
  17. In a recent interview, Jeff Bezos revealed that he recommends using fear to drive work ethic and innovative thinking. Bezos believes the strategy should be implemented even when everything is going well. © Reuters In a shareholder note, Bezos wrote “I constantly remind our employees to be afraid, to wake up every morning terrified. Our customers have made our business what it is," he continued, "and we consider them to be loyal to us – right up until the second that someone else offers them a better service.” In a highly competitive world, Bezos believes that employees need to be scared of not being at the top and commit to "constant improvement, experimentation and innovation in every initiative.” It kind of makes sense as when you're at the top there's only one way to go — down. It is extremely hard to maintain your position at the top. © Reuters It's not the first time a CEO has adopted the strategy of using fear as a way to motivate workers and employees. Former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi transformed the entire company during her tenure and became one of the most successful business figures in the world. In a previous interview with Bloomberg, Nooyi said "I'm always afraid that if I fail, I may have to go back to something that I don't want to,” she continued, "That fear always motivates me and so I drive myself to be better and better at my job every day.” When Amazon first started as a company, it would only sell books online. Bezos later transformed Amazon into the world's leading online retailer and it was all thanks to innovation. The website today now sells everything from gadgets to healthcare and entertainment. "To invent you have to experiment, and if you know in advance that it's going to work, it's not an experiment," Bezos wrote in a 2016 shareholder letter. "Failure and invention are inseparable twins.” © Reuters Innovation and experimentation have enabled Bezos to make Amazon the next trillion dollar company right behind Apple. Bezos himself is now worth more than $156 billion and is now at the top of Forbes richest list. Source: CNBC
  18. Amazon India's Senior Vice President Amit Agarwal wants his colleagues to maintain "work-life harmony" and stop responding to work emails between 6 pm and 8 am. He also talked about the importance of work discipline and how to strike a balance between work and life. According to a report by Bloomberg, Agarwal sent out an email memo internally to his team, talking about the importance of maintaining work-life balance. Previously we've seen Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos talk about the same issue and coin the term "work-life harmony". © Amit Agarwal / Livemint According to Bezos, it isn't about how many hours you spend at home or at work; it's about the energy you bring to both parts of your life. This is a fundamental principle in Bezos's theory of dividing one's time between work and life. The internal memo puts light on India's current state of the IT industry where one is expected to slog the whole day and then complete the remaining work from home. Work-life balance is a considerably new concept in the country where the masses have been used to working more than 60 hours per week. © Reuters Indeed, five of India's biggest cities —Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, and New Delhi—rank extremely low when it comes to work-life balance, according to a recent study of 100 cities around the world by the Amsterdam-based consultancy Arcadis. Indians work around 2,195 hours on an average every year, far above the 1,473 hours a year in Hamburg, the city that ranked among the top three for work-life balance. © Reuters Work no longer happens between the hours of 9 AM and 5 PM, Monday to Friday. Work happens Saturday mornings and late Friday nights. It happens on vacation, and during graduations. The idea of work-life balance suggests that there should be an even split between working and non-working hours. India's IT industry majorly consists of outsourcing, and work needs to be collaborating with the foreign counterparts, ranging from American to European clients. Hence, midnight meetings or off-hour working isn't a rare sight, and the highly competitive environment means it's a do-or-die situation. © Pexels If the employees cannot keep up with the pressure, they are easily replaced. It's good to see Amazon stand along with their employees and understand the situation from a different perspective. However, it still needs to be seen how the company adapts to the new directive because it will mean a radical change for the company, which seems to pride itself on its frugality and how hard it pushes its employees. 19. It's been a while since Irrfan Khan has been undergoing treatment for a neuroendocrine tumour in London. The news of the talented actor suffering from a rare form of cancer broke many hearts. Amid his ongoing health struggles, the actor today took to his Facebook page and announced that he will be opting out of Amazon Prime Original series 'The Ministry', now titled 'Gormint'. The show was one of the most-anticipated ones, especially because Irrfan was a part of it. The actor had already shot several scenes of the series but had to back out due to health concerns. Taking to Facebook, he shared, “With a heavy heart I would like to say that due to this ongoing situation, I will not be able to fulfil my acting commitment to the show. © Twitter I am gutted by this development because the character and the show thrilled me and I even lived with the character for several months before having to cut the journey short. But after extensive discussions, workarounds and sincere efforts by everyone involved, the situation prevents me from being able to do the show entirely. And thus, I must, at this time, exit stage left.” The actor mentioned how he is still looking forward to the show, “excited to see the final product and have complete faith in the creative team to deliver something that is unique and unseen in the Indian satire space so far and I wish them the same good luck and love that they have always wished for me,” Irrfan added. © Facebook Sharing the sad news AIB's Gursimran Khamba shared a picture of Irrfan and wrote, “To everyone who's been asking me “What's happening with The Ministry? (now Gormint) I'd like to inform everyone that due to Irrfan sir's unfortunate health situation we've jointly decided that he no longer be cast in the show. Over the last year as we worked on the show he's been everything from a friend, teacher to a mentor and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to collaborate with him. Life mein aise mauke kam hi milte hain - but abhi jo bhi likhoonga cliche lagega - toh woh saari stories baad mein. For now, from me and all of us at AIB, all we want is for him to get healthy and healed so we can plan more shenanigans together in the future. I still look forward to excitable 3 am calls from him with terrific random ideas for the show. And with a heavy heart, as we all begin to imagine and work on the show without him, I can only hope that we will still make something worthy of the vision and passion sir showed for it. Get well and be better soon! Abhi bahut designs ke kurte try karne hain!” the beautiful message said. To everyone who's been asking me “What's happening with The Ministry? 20. Apple has officially become the world's first trillion-dollar company as a rise in its share price made it all possible. Apple was able to beat its closest rival i.e. Amazon as Apple's share price reached $207.05. (c) Reuters The company sells everything - from the iPhone to services that was co-founded by the late Steve Jobs in 1976. The feat was accomplished a day after Apple published the company's financial results. Apple's share price has grown by 2,000% since Tim Cook replaced Jobs as the chief executive seven years ago. The company has been able to hit $1 trillion in total value 42 years after it was founded. The company managed to rake in profits of $11.5 billion in three months with a record sales of $53.3 billion in revenue. To put things into perspective, Apple generated less than $20 billion in sales before the first iPhone launched in 2006. (c) MensXP Apple could, however, lose its top position to other tech companies like Alphabet (Google) or Amazon if the company is unable to introduce a groundbreaking product or service this year. Companies don't necessarily have the same number of shares over time as they frequently buy back some of its own shares to boost up the stock price. This, in turn, reduces the number of outstanding shares which generally increases the value of each share. For now, Apple is the world's first publicly traded trillion dollar company and we can only wait to see if the company can maintain this momentum or get overtaken by one of its competitors.
  21. A few days back, Amazon kicked off its annual sale across the globe, Prime Day. The sale surpassed all prior sales records in the e-commerce giant's history, including every Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Prime users worldwide ordered more than 100 million products during the sale in a span of just 36 hours. To top it off, the most sold products were Amazon's own Echo Dot speaker and Fire TV Stick. © Reuters Amazon's stock has climbed steadily and reached a record high of US$1,858.88. The company's market cap has now exceeded US$ 900 billion, trailing behind Apple. Apple is currently the largest company in Wall Street with a market cap of almost US$ 950 billion. The calculations for Apple and Amazon's market capitalizations are based on the number of shares outstanding in their March-quarter reports. The increase in stock price has also made its founder and CEO Jeff Bezos the richest man on the planet in modern history. His net worth is now valued at a whopping US$ 150 billion. Jeff Bezos is followed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who is a distant second with a net worth of US$ 93.5 billion, followed by Warren Buffet at US$ 83 billion. © Reuters Bezos currently has a 16 percent stake in the company and also heads another company, Blue Origin. Amazon's business isn't just about online shopping now, the company has rapidly expanded into streaming via its Prime subscription model and is slowly rolling out hardware products as well. Alexa is a smart assistant powering the Echo speakers and is available on smartphones as well. AWS (Amazon Web Services) is another business that has been booming since the last few years. The division provides large scale servers for enterprise level requirements and is likely to grow 45 percent a year through 2020. © BCCL Amazon has also been undertaking large-scale acquisitions including Whole Foods for US$ 13.7 billion, Twitch, Goodreads, IMDB, and Zappos. Bezos too has a wide portfolio of investments in other companies like Twitter, Airbnb and Stack Overflow. Amazon, video streaming service Netflix and a handful of heavyweight technology companies have been rallying their stocks in the last few years. In May, information technology stocks contributed 76.5 percent of the S&P 500 return, according to S&P Global. Source: Reuters
