  1. The Indian cricket team has suffered a huge blow as their explosive batsman at the opening spot, veteran Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out for the rest of the ICC World Cup 2019 with a fractured thumb. Although the southpaw struggled during Team India's warm up game against Bangladesh and the first official game against South Africa, Dhawan seemed to have found his mojo back against Aaron Finch's Australia. Having scored himself a massive 117-run innings despite getting a fractured thumb earlier in the game thanks to a Pat Cummins bouncer, the cricketer not only won the 'Man of the Match' award but also spearheaded the Men in Blue into winning one of the more challenging matches for the team during the ongoing world championship. Being ruled out of just a couple of matches in the initial days of the injury, Dhawan was seen sweating it out in the gym despite having a plastered thumb, with the aim of being 'ready to go' as soon as he is healed and make big runs for his nation. You can make these situations your nightmare or use it an opportunity to bounce back. ð Thank you for all the recovery messages from everyone. ð pic.twitter.com/mo86BMQdDA — Shikhar Dhawan (@SDhawan25) June 14, 2019 Unfortunately, due to a fracture being detected at the base of Dhawan's left thumb which will be in a cast for at least another month, the athlete is out of the World Cup . View this post on Instagram Official Announcement ð¢ð¢ @shikhardofficial ruled out of the World Cup ðð #TeamIndia #CWC19 A post shared by Team India (@indiancricketteam) on Jun 19, 2019 at 4:39am PDT Having said that, the team management of the Bleed Blue army were quick to officially announce youngblood Rishabh Pant as a replacement for the veteran in the Indian cricket squad just a couple of hours since Dhawan's oust was made public. View this post on Instagram An official request has been made to the ICC to replace Shikhar with @rishabpant #TeamIndia #CWC19 A post shared by Team India (@indiancricketteam) on Jun 19, 2019 at 5:34am PDT The team has decided to replace one lefty with another one. While KL Rahul will be opening alongside Rohit Sharma, Pant's role as a batsman is expected to take place at the highly controversial fourth spot of the Indian batting order. Controversial because of the level of talent that was competing for that spot. With masterful players like Dinesh Karthik and Ambati Rayudu whose sturdy nature when it comes to the 50-over format being overlooked, it was Pant's 'single-handedly-six-hitting' explosive batting style that seems to have attracted the selectors going further on this unbeaten World Cup 2019 journey. While Dinesh Karthik is still on the Indian roster (but not in the playing XI), Pant's call might just have brought the biggest heartbreak for Rayudu, who was initially dropped from the team to be replaced with a newcomer like Vijay Shankar. The fans of Indian cricket therefore tried their best to have an insight about Rayudu's feelings towards the latest developments. 2. The year 2018 was really crucial for the Indian cricket team. The Virat Kohli-led side didn't just appear clinical at home but also proved their credentials in the multiple overseas series they played. Testing young blood with experienced campaigners, the new-look Indian team has now established themselves as serious contenders for the ICC World Cup in England & Wales. In a bid to find the perfect team, the Indian selectors and team management were seen trying all possible options in specialist roles in the recent series. And, it finally boiled down to 15th April when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 15-man squad for the ICC mega event. While the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be seen occupying the top-order, the inclusion of KL Rahul, MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Vijay Shankar, Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya all provide adequate options to the Indian team in the middle-order. The bowling department looks well equipped with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar bolstering the pace attack and the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravindra Jadeja adding teeth as spinners. BREAKING: India have named their #CWC19 squad! pic.twitter.com/mMXt5kAG6Y — Cricket World Cup (@cricketworldcup) April 15, 2019 Though the Indian squad looks perfectly balanced, the notable omissions of Rishabh Pant and Ambati Rayudu have irked cricket pundits and fans alike. Both Pant and Rayudu were in the fray for the World Cup, but the Indian selectors showed faith in Karthik and Shankar to do the job for India in the all-important World Cup. While Pant staked his claim to a World Cup spot on the back of blazing batting performances, Rayudu, too, was looked upon as a potential candidate who could solve India's No. 4 problem. However, the Indian selectors thought otherwise and in a bid to derive team balance, they went for safer and more proven options in Karthik and Shankar. There is no doubt over Pant's ability with the willow. On his day, the dashing left-hander is more than capable of running away with the game on the back of innovative strokes he boasts of in his armoury. But, Pant is a gamble in any game. On a day, his shot might come off and on the other, it won't. And, there's little doubt over his unpredictable batting. © BCCL However, Pant's omission for Karthik wasn't decided just on batting. The fact that India needed an extra wicket-keeping option is probably what ruined Pant's chances. While the young gun is undeniably a batting star for the future, his wicket-keeping skills are still a work in progress - something that probably gave Karthik leverage in his selection. "In unison, we all felt either Pant or DK will come into the XI if Mahi (Dhoni) is injured. "If it's a semi-final or an important game, wicket-keeping also matters. That's the only reason we went ahead with Dinesh Karthik. Otherwise, Rishabh Pant was almost there," MSK Prasad, the chief national selector, revealed. The competition between Shankar and Rayudu was also decided on similar lines. Rayudu was being looked upon as a viable No. 4 option after he showed consistency with the willow in the recent series. But, barring his batting might, Rayudu doesn't bowl (thanks to an ICC ban in January) and his fielding, alone, is just not good enough to make the cut. © BCCL On the other hand, Shankar has proven his mettle in the limited opportunities he got. His batting bolsters the Indian middle-order, while his medium-paced deliveries provide an extra bowling option to the 'Men in Blue'. And then, when it comes to fielding, Shankar's 'bullet throw' in the first T20I against New Zealand earlier in February should put all the doubts to rest. “After the Champions Trophy, we tried quite a few middle-order batsmen. We also tried Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey. We gave a few chances to Rayudu, but what Vijay Shankar offers is three-dimensional. Apart from his batting, he can bowl if the conditions are overcast, which we might encounter in England. And he's a fantastic fielder. That's what went in Shankar's favour. He's a batsman who can bowl. We're looking at him at No.4 (to begin with). With Dinesh Karthik in and Kedar Jadhav, we've plenty of options at No. 4 right now," Prasad said. Though it's a little too early to predict whether the inclusion of Shankar and Karthik ahead of Pant and Rayudu will work out, it surely gives India enough balance to adapt to the tournament as it progresses to the knockout stages.
  3. In 2018, a depleted Indian cricket team snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the Nidahas Trophy final in Sri Lanka. The thrilling victory against Bangladesh will be remembered for two things: Dinesh Karthik's match-winning knock and Vijay Shankar's struggles. While the former turned the tide in India's favour with a stunning batting display, the latter's sluggish innings almost cost his side the game and trophy. Following India's emphatic triumph, while Karthik was being hailed for his batting prowess, Shankar became the subject of immense criticism on the social media. Since that match, a lot has changed. © Twitter The 28-year-old might have not have had very good memories from that final, but he hasn't allowed his forgettable international debut to affect his performances on the field. Making most of the limited opportunities he has got so far, Shankar has, time and again, proved his worth with both bat and ball. And, that's exactly why he has been included in Team India's 15-man squad for the all-important ICC World Cup 2019. A versatile batsman who is more than capable of batting at any position in the middle-order, Shankar's ability to mould his innings according to the situation is what makes him a valuable addition to the Indian line-up. In case of a collapse, the Tamil Nadu cricketer can hold the fort at one end in pressure situations, and, if need be, he can accelerate the innings in the later stages of the game with plenty of big strokes in his armoury. © Twitter If his artistry with the willow adds value to the Indian middle-order, Shankar's medium-paced deliveries further bolster his side with an extra bowling option. Though he might still be fairly inexperienced and doesn't have much runs or wickets under his belly, Shankar is still a vital cog that provides the much-needed balance to the Indian team as they chase glory in England & Wales. Many did argue his selection ahead of Ambati Rayudu, who has performed more often than not, but it is Shankar's ability to contribute in all the three facets of the game that makes him a safer and a better bet than the specialist batsman. While we can't really predict if Shankar would occupy the hotly-debated No. 4 slot or not, his addition to the Indian squad by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) surely got the cricket fans excited on social media. This means the #No4 debate is still open. Options now are Vijay Shankar or Virat Kohli with Rahul at no. 3. People who watch a lot of domestic cricket really rate Vijay Shankar. Happy for him but his temperament will be tested. — Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) April 15, 2019 Jadeja and Vijay Shankar both make the cut as I thought. Overall, very balanced side. 4. As the World Cup approaches, tension for team India continues to rise. Just when we took a breather with Hardik Pandya coming back to the squad, a fresh development is now knocking on the doors of the Men in Blue, this time, aiming at prospected number 4 positioner, Ambati Rayudu. Two weeks ago, Rayudu was suspected to have an illegal bowling action in the first ODI against Australia, following which he was asked to go under a test within 14 days while being allowed to bowl. Many compared his action to that of the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan, but we all know it was more of a 'Bhatta' bowling action, rather than a legitimate one. Turns out, the 33-year-old opted against the test, following which he was suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect. In a statement, the ICC wrote: “The player elected not to submit to a test of his bowling action within the stipulated period of 14 days of being reported for a suspect action, and therefore he has been suspended with immediate effect. The suspension will remain in place until he is tested, and can demonstrate he is able to bowl with a legal action.” Although he can still bowl in domestic matches, that has to be approved by the BCCI first. However, the big question right now is whether Rayudu is the correct choice for the World Cup? And if not him, then who? © AP If removed from the squad, the Indian batting line up will certainly miss Rayudu in the middle-order, as the Andhra lad is capable of batting anywhere as per the match situation.
  5. During ODI match one of three between India and Australia, our boys were taken aback by the bowling of the first-timer Jason Behrendorff, who had earlier joked about taking a wicket in his first ODI over and eventually realised it by sending Shikhar Dhawan packing for an LBW in his first over itself. However, Behrendorff wasn't the only bowler who took the world by surprise that day. Making a comeback to the Indian roster for the ODI series Down Under, the 33-year-old, Ambati Rayudu was given two overs to bowl during India's fielding, in which Rayudu gave up 13 runs without any extras or wickets. Sounds like any other average rotational bowler, right? But from the first ball Rayudu delivered, there was something seemingly 'off' about his bowling action which caught umpires Michael Gough's and Richard Kettleborough's attention almost instantly. Even the Aussie commentators found themselves being amazed by the right-arm bowler's action and promptly compared it to that of the Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan. However, after the match got over, the match officials' report to the Indian staffers showed concerns about the off-spinner's bowling action. BREAKING NEWS: India's Ambati Rayudu has been reported for a suspect bowling action after the first #AUSvIND ODI. He is to undergo testing within 14 days. â¡ï¸ https://t.co/oYme344WaJ pic.twitter.com/nJWMTkzTCb — ICC (@ICC) January 13, 2019 "Rayudu's bowling action will now be scrutinised further under the ICC process relating to suspected illegal bowling actions reported in Tests, ODIs and T20Is,” reads an ICC statement. “He is required to undergo testing within 14 days, and, during this period, Rayudu is permitted to continue bowling in international cricket until the results of the testing are known.” There seems of be a non-spoken agreement amongst the cricketing fans from all over the world towards the illegality of Rayudu's bowling action: I am not surprised, he looked like thrown darts even on the small highliht package where I saw him bowl 3 ballsð Kohli needs to have Jadhav in playing 11, he is a stroong finisher and good 6th bowlerð — anuradha_dighe (@anuradha_dighe) January 13, 2019 Yeah. Had a eerie feeling that this was on the cards when he was bowling & his action was being shown in slow-mo, front-on. To the naked eye, it was clear that not all was Ok with the arm. — Moinak Das (@d_moinak) January 13, 2019 I thought it, when he was bowling, that it seems to be illegal — Mandvee Mishra (@im_mandvee) January 13, 2019 According to the 'Laws of Cricket' which was drafted in 1744, a bowler is not to extend his bowling arm during a delivery and in order to gain velocity, he or she must only use the rotation of their shoulder. Throwing the ball is not allowed and will be considered a no ball if the umpire deems it illegal.
  6. Almost 15 months ago, the Indian cricket team and their fans were forced to endure a heartbreak after the 'Men in Blue' lost the 2017 Champions Trophy final against Pakistan. Patiently waiting for revenge, the Indian cricket team returned the favour after deriving an eight-wicket win in the group stage clash at the ongoing Asia Cup. The Pakistani side had an opportunity to peg India back in the Super Four tie on 23rd September, but Sarfraz Ahmed's men just couldn't negate the rampant sub-continent giants. Restricted to a mediocre total of 237 runs, the Pakistani side once again fell short against India who chased down the target with nine wickets and 63 deliveries to spare. It was India's second successive win against Pakistan in the tournament, one that allowed Rohit Sharma & co to carry on their unbeaten run in the ongoing Asia Cup. Whether it was their prolific bowling display or strong batting performance, Team India ticked all the boxes which understandably called for celebrations. View this post on Instagram Happy Birthday @a.t.rayudu What followed was a typical cake smash #TeamIndia style ð ð A post shared by Team India (@indiancricketteam) on Sep 23, 2018 at 12:49pm PDT If their emphatic win over Pakistan gave them a reason to celebrate, the fact that Ambati Rayudu was also celebrating his birthday on Sunday, further saw Team India letting their hair down in the dressing room. Already in a joyous mood after thrashing their arch-rivals, the Indian cricketers celebrated Rayudu's birthday in style. Leading the animated celebrations, MS Dhoni was seen smearing Rayudu's face with the birthday cake as other Indian players joined in. In a series of photos shared by the Indian team on Instagram, the players were seen having a gala time as Rayudu got a 'cake facial'. © Twitter/@BCCI Jasprit Bumrah (2-29), Yuzvendra Chahal (2-46) and Kuldeep Yadav (2-41) hunted in packs as the Pakistani batting line-up failed to post a competitive total on the board. Not many runs to contend with, the Pakistani pace battery ran into all sorts of trouble with both Rohit Sharma (111*) and Shikhar Dhawan (114) giving India a rock solid 210-run opening stand. It was a clinical win for Team India who have now virtually sealed their berth in the tournament's final scheduled to be held on 28th September. Having lost against India, Pakistan will be eager to produce a better performance against Bangladesh, when they lock horns on 26th September. On the other hand, India will be seen plying their trade against Afghanistan on 25th September.
