The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is currently underway in full swing, with 10 teams fighting it out in the group stage. But the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already geared up to take the tournament to the next level. The world’s richest cricket board has already started issuing the Invitation-To-Tender (ITT) to sell the broadcasting rights for the next five-year cycle 2023-27. © IPL Some of the biggest media companies including Disney, Zee, Sony, TV18-Viacom and Amazon have already purchased the tender documents in the last one week and several others like Apple and YouTube are also interested in associating themselves with the cash-rich league. According to a Times of India report, the American tech giant Apple is expected to pick the tender documents next week. The interest from some of the biggest companies is a clear indication of the league’s immense popularity. Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has grown multi-folds and that’s why everyone wants to become a part of the tournament. © Reuters The world’s biggest phone brand Apple has never bid for any major cricket competition before and their interest indicates that the league has the potential to rival the world’s biggest sporting events in the future. For the Indian cricket board, this is great news. However, fans are not very excited at the prospect of Apple entering the bidding war for IPL’s broadcasting rights. © Reuters The reason is simple, many believe that if Apple succeeded in putting together a successful bid, watching the league would become very expensive. Apple is known for its premium quality smartphones which cost lakhs of rupees and it’s a luxury that not everyone can afford. As soon as the news of Apple showing interest in IPL media rights started doing rounds on social media, the fans started expressing their apprehensions. The usual jokes about “selling kidney” that float around the internet whenever a new iPhone is launched started doing rounds in response to this news as well. Subscription ke liye kidney bechni pdegi frands — Cricket wala ladka (@cricketwalaldka) April 5, 2022Then we would have i - commentary, i- scorecard, i- replays etc etc. Itna mehnenh ipl nhi dekhna hai bhai — Avneet (@Avneet_Shilpa) April 5, 2022Bhai Iske Subscription ke liye konsa Body Part Girvi Rakhna Padega...? — SIDDHESH JADHAV®️ (@Siddhes74106361) April 5, 2022Imagine selling your kidney only to watch your team bottle the season — Heisenberg (@internetumpire) April 5, 2022iPhone kyu Lena parega Apple TV android pe v chalta hai — Amrit Mishra (@A__mrit) April 5, 2022Kya? What? Matlab ab IPL dekhne ke liye IPhone aur iPad khareedne padenge kya — Jayesh (@Jayesh_45) April 5, 2022Mera IPL dekhna band karoge kya — Anii (@Ani45L) April 5, 2022No doubt iPhones are quite expensive but it doesn’t mean that to watch IPL people will have to dig deep into their pockets to buy an Apple product. In fact, Apple’s digital streaming platform costs only Rs 99 per month which is cheaper than what many other major OTT platforms charge for their annual subscription. It’s not a given if Apple would win the rights but even if they do, rest assured that watching IPL wouldn’t be out of your reach. View the full article
