  1. Before the release of the final installment in the Avengers series, there were only two movies people were talking about - 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Baahubali 2: The Conclusion'. Now, everyone has just one thing on their minds - 'Avengers: Endgame'. Arka Media Works Thanos is the greatest supervillain ever, not just in the Marvel Universe but also in the lives of Bollywood filmmakers, as 'Avengers: Endgame' turned every desi movie to dust with its release. In fact, 'Avengers: Endgame' has entered the 100-crore club in its second day itself. Marvel Studios If a movie can land a Marvel fan in hospital, because she cried uncontrollably while watching it, you can only expect it to reach greater heights and break all the records. On its first day, the movie earned Rs 53.10 crore and became the biggest opener in India, beating the likes of 'Baahubali 2: The Conclusion'. On Saturday, it earned Rs 51.40 crore and cakewalked into the Rs 100 crore club in just two days, with Rs 104 crore. Marvel Studios Even before its release, the movie has been making every desi marvel fan go batshit crazy and its release has only made people lose their minds further. The Russo brothers' directorial released in 2845 screens in India in Hindi, English, Tamil and Telugu language, and the movie stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner and Brie Larson, among others.
  2. Another day, another disappointment for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) who continue their winless streak in the twelfth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) having played four matches and have found themselves at the bottom of the league's points table. After captain Kohli got dismissed by a magnificent Shreyas Gopal (who ended up with a three-wicket-haul), the second RCB opener, Parthiv Patel put the burden on his shoulders to help his side reach a respectable total of 158. Patel's bat contributed with 67 runs off 41 balls which also included 9 boundaries and a maximum. However, Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Jos Buttler and Steve Smith were too hot to handle for the men in red and gold as they spearheaded Royals to win their first game of the season. Having said that, Tuesday's match against Rajasthan got Virat Kohli an incredible feat to boast about as it provided him with the opportunity to captain an IPL squad for the 100th time and make him only the third cricketer in the world to do so, behind Chennai Super Kings star Mahendra Singh Dhoni (162 matches) and former IPL player, Gautam Gambhir (129 matches between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils. Today our skipper – @imVkohli becomes the third captain in IPL history to play as captain in 100 matches. Congratulations Virat, keep playing bold! #PlayBold pic.twitter.com/Ar5FASqB24 — Royal Challengers (@RCBTweets) April 2, 2019 Ironically, such a record that should normally bring a sense of pride to any athlete, also brings immense shame to RCB skipper as Kohli has the worst record amongst the men who have reached such a status. Amongst the 162 games led by Dhoni, he has a win percentage of 60.24% while Gambhir's is at 55.42% with three and two titles under their belts, respectively. Kohli, on the other hand, is at a below average mark of 46.87% wins as captain. Not to forget the fact that Bengaluru have never won the trophy. With another loss of the season in what appears to be a lost cause, RCB fans have resorted to humour to hide their pain but we see right through it: RCB Fans: When will we win our 1st IPL title??? 3. One of the greatest batsmen to have ever represented the Men in Blue, Rahul Dravid has fulfilled his duties as the coach of the junior Indian cricket team and helped them experience the level of success that not even the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would have seen coming their way. It was under the leadership of Mr Dependable himself, that Team India A was able to completely dismantle the visiting England Lions for a five-match one-day series and not to forget the 2018 World Cup victory by the Under-19 squad captained by Shubhman Gill along with the 2018 Asia cup championship. It was therefore rather obvious to have Dravid become a major part of the revamping of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), a Bengaluru-based facility that will ensure state of the art technology and other provisions to contribute even more towards the betterment of the future of cricket in India. "Rahul has been handling junior cricket for a while now and the results have been phenomenal. It's only natural that he had to get involved with affairs at the NCA (in the present position). Now, he's determined to bring about a complete turnaround at the academy. With the kind of vision he has, it's already a given now that this is his role until he decides to stay,” Times of India quoted an informed official. Dravid will be entrusted with the role of building the entire academy from scratch while hiring the entire coaching team from all around the country. “For all practical purposes, NCA will now be Rahul's baby,” said another official. His vision has already started to make some significant changes to the pre-established rules. For instance, back in the day, 15 out of 20 people were selected to go further for the training camp, the other five would have been asked to go home, leaving behind their dreams. Dravid, however, has made it clear that all 20 athletes will remain with the academy throughout the camp. While a lot of people had hoped that the BCCI would have selected 'The Wall' as the leader of the main Indian cricket roster instead of Ravi Shastri, this may turn out to be a blessing in disguise for the future Indian athletes, having being taught under the wings of the very best at an early stage. With a rock solid base to build their cricketing career upon, Dravid's NCA might as well be the place where dreams are transformed into reality.
  4. As the twelfth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) came calling with a scintillating contest between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the cricket fans geared up for multiple individual clashes that the opening match had to offer. While many were keen to witness the battle between 'Captain Cool' MS Dhoni and 'Captain Fearless' Virat Kohli, others were eager to see the contest between RCB's explosive batting line-up and CSK's experienced bowling unit. Amongst the key battles, there was one between Suresh Raina and the RCB skipper in the race to reach 5,000 runs in the IPL. Ahead of the IPL opener, Raina had amassed 4,985 runs in 3,601 balls (1167 dots, 1533 singles, 256 twos, 11 threes, 448 fours, 1 five and 185 sixes) in the tournament. He was just 15 runs shy of becoming the first player to score 5,000 IPL runs. Twitter/@IPL On the other hand, Kohli had scored 4,948 runs in 3,784 balls (1319 dots, 1575 singles, 266 twos, 11 threes, 435 fours and 178 sixes) in the IPL. While Raina looked in touching distance, Kohli needed 52 runs to achieve the unique feat. But, after Dhoni won the toss and asked RCB to bat first, many would have probably tipped the Indian captain to reach there first. But, contrary to popular perception, Kohli, akin to majority of his teammates, had a forgettable outing as he was sent back into the hut for just six runs. On a raging turner of a track at the MA Chidambaram stadium, perennial underachievers RCB were bowled out for a mere 70 runs. Twitter/@IPL With Kohli bottling his opportunity, all eyes were on Raina when he came out to bat in the third over. After surviving a run-out scare (thanks to Mohammad Siraj's fumble while collecting the ball), Raina tickled the ball towards fine leg for an easy single in the ninth over, etching his name in the history books as the first-ever player to complete 5,000 runs in the IPL. 5. Respawn's 'Apex Legends' has been hitting some impressive gaming milestone since it's launch. The game recently hit 50 million players worldwide, and now it's been brought to light that the title has become the biggest free-to-play launch of all time. © Respawn According to a report by market research firm Superdata, 'Apex Legends' is not just a big hit for EA, it's also the became biggest free-to-play title launch of all time by pulling in a whopping $92 million in revenue in its launch month i.e. February across all platforms. Not just that, 'Apex Legends' also became one of the top ten grossing games in February. Reportedly, most of the money which 'Apex Legends' made was on consoles, not PC. The game ranked fourth in console revenue and sixth in PC among all titles. Here, take a look: © Superdata 'Fortnite', as you can see, still topped 'Apex Legends' on both the platforms by generating more than $300 million in a single month. Yes, 'Apex Legends' may not have killed 'Fortnite' in terms of the revenue, but there's no denying that 'Apex Legends' is just as popular as 'Fortnite', if not more. I mean, I personally play 'Apex Legends' a lot more than 'Fortnite' nowadays, and I know I am not alone. 'Apex Legends', in case you don't know, is a free-to-play title that's available on EA's Origin. The game has revenue streams via its virtual coin currency, which allows players to purchase Apex Packs and splurge on cosmetic upgrades. In fact, even some legends like Mirage, Caustic and the new Octane are behind a paywall for those who want to add them quickly instead of earning points to acquire them.
  6. Earlier this February, Bayern Munich did relatively well after travelling to the Anfield and restricting a rampant Liverpool brigade to a goalless draw in the first-leg of the Round of 16 clash in the UEFA Champions League. Given Liverpool's form and might, the 0-0 draw had initially tilted the Round of 16 battle in Bayern's favour ahead of the second-leg tie. But, on 14th March, when the Reds travelled to the home of the German giants, the events that unfolded at the Alliaz Arena, broke all myths that people had from the first-leg. Sadio Mane looked at his destructive best, scoring two key goals for the visitors who secured their berth for the quarterfinals on the back of a 3-1 (on aggregate) win. © Reuters The only silver lining for Niko Kovac's men turned out to be Joel Matip's own goal in 39th minute. But, even that wasn't enough to thwart the efforts of Liverpool to progress further in Europe's top competition. If Bayern's hapless performance on a wet in Munich failed to impress their fans, winger Franck Ribery's decision to sport a weird hairdo in the match, further made the butt of all jokes on the social media. For many 35-year-olds, natural hair is an absolute luxury. While some worry about losing it, others are just lucky enough to still have it. And, when you look at Ribery, you know he belongs to the latter category. But, still, for reasons unknown, the Bayern winger made a complete mess of his natural hair. © Reuters His decision to shave the sides and carve a number '7' at one end made him a laughing stock as soon as he stepped on the pitch to face Liverpool. For someone his age, Ribery looked like a kid whose bid to stand out amongst his mates went horribly wrong. Following Bayern's loss, football fans (mostly Anfield loyalists) targetted the French footballer for his surprising haircut. pic.twitter.com/VjvOGay2Tw — airlangga (@gagahyta) March 14, 2019 Franck Ribery's haircut pic.twitter.com/cw9lbEQQ9j — Cardigan Bravo (@Heisenbert) March 13, 2019 Massive respect for Franck Ribery, who paid tribute to James Milner last night by shaving our midfielder's number into his hair, aged 35 ðð¾ pic.twitter.com/obRrL8zdNq — Empire of the Kop (@empireofthekop) March 14, 2019 Absolute hacking bit of kit, this guy! ð — Chris Toft (@ChrisToft1986) March 14, 2019 Pure eye cabbage right there ð — Trev Schott (@shenobi78) March 14, 2019 ð‍âï¸ Franck Ribéry will be 36-years-old next month and he's still getting haircuts like my little cousin...#BAYLIV pic.twitter.com/kf3RL9ohSf — The Sportsman (@TheSportsman) March 13, 2019 Franck Ribéry is going to be 36 next month. 8. A great leader, fantastic centre-back and undisputed talisman at Santiago Bernabeu, Sergio Ramos has been one of the vital cogs in Real Madrid's set-up over the years. His popularity is second to none which also explains the hefty paycheck he draws every week. But, while the Madridistas hail him as their true leader, Ramos has a side which, every now and then, overshadows his performance. Deliberate or not, his arm-tackle against Mohammed Salah during the UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool last season had caused a huge backlash amongst the football fans across the globe. For the Madrid skipper, it seems, winning - not just the game, but every single tackle - is everything. And, those who've seen him in action would agree that the Spaniard doesn't mind getting his hands a little dirty, quite literally on many occasions. © Reuters And, Los Blancos' recent La Liga encounter against Girona was a testimony to that. If Madrid' 1-2 loss to the least-favoured club came as a surprise, Ramos' red card in the 90th minute further spelt their doom. The Madrid centre-back was given a yellow card for a handball inside the box which resulted in a penalty for the visitors in the 64th minute. After 20 minutes of levelling the game, Girona got in front through a beautiful strike from Portu. And, with the hosts trailing by a goal, the home fans were handed another blow in the 90th minute when Ramos was handed his second yellow card for kicking Girona's Cristhian Stuani in another bad and unwanted foul. © Reuters Owing to his red card, Ramos etched his name in the history books for a La Liga record that he wouldn't be able to forget anytime soon. Thanks to his latest antics, Ramos now has 20 red cards to his name in the Spanish league - most by any footballer in La Liga. He also became the only player for Real Madrid to receive 25 red cards in his career so far. If his red card left Real Madrid frustrated, Ramos' comments after the game further showed his flawed understanding of the game. "Looking at the result, I'd be lying if I said I didn't force, it is not to underestimate the opponent nor to think that the series is over, but in football, you have to make tough decisions," the Real Madrid captain said. 10. If football matches are capable of enticing fans, the players' transfers dictate the fate of clubs who're in contention to secure the signatures of their valued assets. At the same time, the transfer windows can turn out to be a heartbreak for some fans, while it can excite others with new joinees. But, amidst all the hullabaloo, a lot of money is splurged by the football clubs to attract their potential targets which further equates to top wages and big-buck signings. While the summer transfer window has come to an end, there is no stopping the high-profile moves in club football. After luring Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid last summer, Serie A giants Juventus have now managed to steal dynamic midfielder Aaron Ramsey from Arsenal. Massimiliano Allegri's side will now be bolstered with the presence of the Gunners star at the Turin-based club. © Reuters The 28-year-old signed a four-year deal with Serie A champions for a staggering 7.8 million dollars per season. In the process, he became the highest paid British Footballer of all time (in terms of basic salary). The Zebras tried really hard to make Ramsey their prey in the January window, but couldn't succeed then. Fortunately, all their hard-work to didn't go to waste as they finally caught hold of him by the end. As per the pre-contract signed by former Arsenal player, he would be joining Juventus in July, after the completion of his contract with The Gunners. The British international hasn't cost Juventus anything because his contract with Arsenal finishes in June. But still, 'as a result of the registration of the player, Juventus will have to pay a wholesome amount of 3.7 million euros ($4.1 million) by July 10.' © Reuters Though the English midfielder was found nowhere near his game this season, he managed to provide mere 3 assists and could find the net just twice in his 22 appearances for the club. Despite all the stats, Ramsey is still considered one of the best midfielders in the PL. And joining forces with Miralem Pjanic, Paulo Dybala and Sami Khedira, could certainly produce some majestic performances for The White-Blacks. Looking at the current situation of the Unai Emery's Arsenal, Ramsey's move to the Serie A club seems like the best option for the three-time FA Cup winner. Let's hope that signing proves to be an asset for the star-studded Juventus line-up and helps them bag more trophies.
  11. 'Game of Thrones' is hands down one of the most popular TV series of recent times, and we simply cannot ignore the ardent fan following the show enjoys. From mind-boggling fan theories to crazy fans going out of their way to prove their loyalty, 'Games of Thrones' can boast of it all. © HBO However, much like it is the case with most fandoms, GOT fans have also proven their allegiance to the show time and again. So it is only expected that the makers of 'Game of Thrones' be gracious towards this outpouring of faith and support from fans all around the world. Well, seems like the GOT team has taken note of its fans' undying love for the show, and they decided to share it with the rest of the world. So HBO recently released its own 'Fan Anthem' #ForTheThrone on GOT's official YouTube channel, ahead of the premiere of the last season in April. The video is a visual montage of tributes GOT fans paid to show, and the best part is that it includes the musical tribute of a 18-year-old Kashmiri boy. Sufiyan Malik from Srinagar in Kashmir can be seen in the video, playing the traditional Rabab, which has been taken from his Game of Thrones tribute video called 'The Cure'. As if the haunting and soulful musical tribute itself was not enough, the video play out is absolutely stunning with its picturisation, and choice of location. But what's more, Tyrion and the Night King also make a cameo appearance in the tribute video! You gotta check out the tribute, 'cause Sufiyan Malik did all of us GOT fans out there real proud.
  12. Ever since Finance Minister Piyush Goyal presented the budget in the Lok Sabha, the whole nation has been busy deliberating its pros and cons, and what it might have in store for the Indian citizens. Being NDA government's last budget before the 2019 general elections, it was looked upon as a potential chance to woo the voters. From financial support to farmers to noticeable tax rebates, the Budget 2019 had many offerings which allowed it to dominate social media trends over the weekend. There were hilarious memes, funny jokes and all the chatter you needed about the new budget. But, amid all that, there came an epic photobombing episode that made a young girl an internet sensation overnight. After the new budget was tabled in Lok Sabha, Union Minister Jayant Sinha was busy expressing his views while talking to the reporters outside Parliament. But, as Sinha spoke about how the government has “always presented a good budget and this year is no different”, a young girl standing behind him made full use of the opportunity to photobomb his interview. Walking back and forth behind Sinha, the white sweatshirt-wearing teenager made her presence felt by looking in the camera and then sticking her tongue out. 13. Last month, the Pakistan cricket team and captain Sarfraz Ahmed found themselves in a racism row that was condemned by cricket bigwigs across the globe. During the 2nd ODI on 22nd January, the Pakistani skipper was caught on the stump mic sledging South Africa's Andile Phehlukwayo with racist taunts which eventually earned him a four-match suspension for breaching ICC's code of conduct. Since then, a lot of emphasis has been laid on the demeanour of cricketers on the field. Many former greats have joined the great debate on the immediate need to keep a check on cricketers' on-field behaviour. But, as the Pakistan cricket team tried to put the controversy behind, another incident involving one of their star players has come to the fore. Pakistan's dashing opener Fakhar Zaman was caught swearing on the stump mic during the fifth ODI against South Africa in Newlands. The incident occurred on the final delivery of the 12th over of Pakistan's innings when Zaman was facing Kagiso Rabada. Tackling a short of a length delivery, the Pakistani opener was deceived by the lack of pace from the South African speedster before getting struck in the ribcage. Watching his partner getting a body blow, Babar Azam walked up to Zaman to check up on him. In his defence, Zaman was caught on the stump-mic saying: "Slow ho gaya. Yaar woh 140 hai, behen***d slow aa raha hai. (It got slow. He is 140 mate, beh*n***d it is coming slow)”. While Fakhar went on to score a brilliant 70 in the game which was eventually won by the hosts by seven wickets, his unparliamentary language caught the attention of cricket fans who expected better from the Pakistani batting sensation than what they heard.
  14. After becoming only the fourth Indian captain to win the ICC U-19 World Cup, Prithvi Shaw has established his reputation as one of the most promising young talents in the country. His exploits in the U-19 World Cup and domestic circuit fast-tracked him into the Indian team where he announced his arrival on the international circuit with a brilliant hundred on debut. His natural talent and artistry with the willow further saw him becoming a part of the Indian cricket team that toured Australia. But, while many expected young Shaw to shine Sachin Tendulkar Down Under, the Mumbai wonderkid unfortunately suffered an ankle injury that ruled him out of the Test series that was eventually won by his side in emphatic fashion. Since then, Shaw has been nursing his injury as India continues their tour of New Zealand. And, on 31st January, when his U-19 teammate Shubman Gill made his international debut in the 4th ODI at the Seddon Park, Shaw was seen taking inspiration from Ranveer Singh's viral rap song 'Apna Time Ayega' from his upcoming flick 'Gully Boy'. View this post on Instagram Aapna Time Aayega... Injury se Fit Hoke.... Mein Aur Run Banayega... Apna Time Aayega... #gullycrickettointernationalcricket 𤣠A post shared by MR. SHAW (@prithvishaw) on Jan 30, 2019 at 8:36am PST The 19-year-old took to Instagram and shared a photo of himself, holding the iconic MRF willow. Using the verse of Ranveer's song, Shaw captioned the image: "Aapna time ayega...Injury se fit hoke...Mein Aur Run Banayega...Apna Time Ayega". Making his debut in 2018 in the first Test of the home series against West Indies, Shaw made an immediate impact with a commendable hundred. He, then, followed it up with 103 runs in the second Test. In the two Tests he played, Shaw amassed 237 runs to eventually bag the 'Man of the Series' award. He was then prepping up for a stern test in Australia, but his injury ruled him out of the Test series. Since then, the young gun has been nursing his injury and recovering well, but he's still not fit enough to feature for India. While no comeback date has been set for him yet, Shaw recently told India TV that he would be fit for the twelfth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he will be seen donning Delhi Capitals' jersey.
  15. In the era where the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were leaving everyone behind, Novak Djokovic undoubtedly stepped up his game to give the proven stars a run for their money and stake claim as one of the modern-day greats. His consistent performances on the big stage also helped him forge a partnership with Nadal and Federer as tennis' 'Big Three'. But, apart from running past opponents with his aggressive baseline play, the Serbian star has also struck a chord with tennis fans with his sense of humour. Staying true to his nickname 'Djoker', the 31-year-old continues to be an exciting prospect for his antics both on and off the field. © Reuters His pun and wit were once again in full display during a media interaction following his Australian Open triumph over Nadal in the final. Justifying his World No. 1 ranking, Djokovic proved to be too good for his Spanish counterpart, securing a 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 win in the all-important clash at the Rod Laver Arena. After winning his 15th Grand Slam title, a joyous Djokovic sent the press into hysterics by imitating an Italian journalist during the post-match media interaction. The Italian journalist was curious about Djokovic's thoughts on his record Australian Open haul. But, before the poor journo could complete his question, the Serbian interrupted midway to pull off a hilarious Italian accent while mocking him. .@DjokerNole sent the press into hysterics ð¤£#AusOpen pic.twitter.com/7blHxlDfHM — #AusOpen (@AustralianOpen) January 27, 2019 “Novak, congratulations. After beating Nadal in the final, Djokovic lifted his seventh Australian Open title, going clear of Federer and the legendary Roy Emerson in the list of most title wins in Melbourne Park. In the most endearing news segment today, 96-year-old Karthyayani Amma from Kerala has shown the nation the kind of will that literacy can conjure, by being selected as the Commonwealth of Learning Goodwill Ambassador, for India. © Twitter Amma became a household name in Kerala, when in November 2018 she achieved her first educational degree at the age of 96! 17. It's Mahendra Singh Dhoni's turn to shine brightly on the field once again and we're glad he added another feather to his cap in today's match. The former Indian captain became the fifth Indian to score 10,000 ODI runs for India at the 1st ODI of India vs Australia, joining the elite list of Indian cricketers who have already done so before. (c)Twitter The right-handed batsman crossed the 10,000-run mark in the format in 2017 while touring in England by scoring a total of 174 runs for Asia XI in three matches. Dhoni now has a total of 10,174 runs in a one-day international when he scored in the current ODI in the 50-overs format. Dhoni now stands in the same league as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli, who've also scored over 10,000 runs in One-Day International matches. (c)Twitter In about 330 ODIs for India, the batsman has managed to score over 10,000 runs with an average of 49.75, which include 9 hundreds and 67 fifties. Dhoni is the 12th player in the world to join the 10,000 runs club in ODIs. Dhoni has been criticised recently for his deteriorating form in limited over's cricket but now with this well-received title, he's back in full form and shape and we're super proud of him!
  18. Sports mirror the society and just like any other aspect of culture, it can act as a mechanism for both societal and political change in a country. Sports provide us with an opportunity to cheer and boo; it motivates and deflates us, and it has the capability to bring joy and sorrow in our lives. Thus, it plays an important role in shaping, modifying, and creating a culture while affecting the lives of millions of its fans. The biggest example is a country like India, where the population is so obsessed with cricket that whether it's a family dinner or a casual outing with friends, no conversation is complete without mentioning the gentleman's game. Over the years, we have been celebrating the geniuses of numerous cricketing stars who left a lasting impression in our lives with their exemplary performances. The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, to name a few, have etched their name in the history books for their respective feats in the cricketing world. But, as much as their skills, it was also the demeanour of the Indian cricket team of that generation that garnered respect and admiration from fans. As all good things, must come to an end, so did the careers of the gentlemen of Indian cricket. And, what followed later was an all-out aggressive approach incorporated by the new-age Team India under the leadership of Virat Kohli. And, to be honest, there's nothing wrong with playing a sport with a bit of aggression. The Australians have thrived on it for years which played a pivotal role in their dominance in international cricket. © AP But, how much is too much? A question that has been lingering in the back of the minds of many fans and pundits before being nullified with positive results raked in by Kohli & Co. Flaunting their tattooed arms, funky hairdos and chiselled physiques, the new generation of the Indian cricket team has surely set new standards, beginning a new culture for their fans to follow. And, even if many still feel that those things might be a distraction, the fact is, as long as the on-field performances of these cricketers are not getting affected by their lifestyle choices, they're probably doing fine. However, the notion, many dreaded for, finally became a reality when Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul came on the recent episode of the popular show 'Koffee With Karan' where misogyny and sexism reached a whole new level, probably for the first time (involving cricketers) on national television. More than Rahul, it was Pandya who appeared boorish in his remarks aimed at women. Among the multiple things that left viewers shell-shocked, Pandya did his reputation no favour by claiming: "I like to watch and observe how they (women) move in the club. I'm little from the Black side, so I need to see how they move". The Baroda cricketer was either painstakingly honest (which further makes us question his character) or downright stupid in objectifying women on national TV while answering to Karan Johar's query as to why he doesn't ask women their names in the club. © Instagram/@hardikpandya93 If his personal opinion made the viewers cringe, Pandya further rattled everyone by claiming: “When I lost my virginity, I came home and said, 'Main karke aya hai aaj (I had *** today)'". And, then, what followed later, "At a party, my parents asked me 'acha tera wala (women) kaun sa hai (who is your interest here?)' so I said 'yeh, yeh, yeh (pointing out women)' and they were like 'waah proud of you beta',” made us question his upbringing. I mean, no matter how accepting or understanding your parents are, I'd like to believe that no parent would tell their kids that they are proud of them, especially when they are interested in, not one, but multiple partners. Someone should have told the immature cricketer that the women are neither trophies nor are they to be brandished as possessions. As soon as the show was aired, it came as no surprise to see cricket fans from every corner of the country coming out all guns blazing against Pandya on the social media. And, it took Pandya four days to realise that he had been insensitive in his comments on the chat show. We knew a comment or clarification was around the corner, but what the Indian cricketer wrote on the social media was not even a responsible statement, let alone an apt apology. pic.twitter.com/O0UlpFm43o — hardik pandya (@hardikpandya7) January 9, 2019 "After reflecting on my comments on Koffee With Karan, I would like to apologise to everyone concerned who I may have hurt in any way. Honestly, I got a bit carried away with the nature of the show. In no way did I mean to disrespect or hurt anyone's sentiments. Respect," Pandya wrote on Twitter following the backlash over his remarks. He had already tarnished his image as a youth icon with his comments on the show, but the Indian cricketer still had a chance to make it right with his apology. But, sadly, the boorish attitude that irked the fans after watching him on the chat show, once again reflected in his so-called apology, that lacked responsibility on his part and acknowledgement of his mistake. His casual approach in the apology, where he conveniently claims to have gotten carried away with the nature of the show, makes for nothing more than just shifting the blame rather than owning up to his actions. If someone has followed Pandya's career so far, they'd agree that the youngster struck a chord with cricket fans for rising through the ranks on the back of relentless life struggles. From overcoming financial hardships to stepping up for his family at an early age, Pandya has been an embodiment of success, derived through hard work and perseverance. Even when he stepped up his style quotient (no matter how flamboyant it may seem), Pandya, still, was looked upon as a household boy who was finally getting his due following his persistent efforts. © Instagram/@hardikpandya93 But, sadly, all those things mean little to the fans now, thanks to his distasteful, misogynist and sexist comments on the show and an irresponsible apology which followed later. Sounding like Kim Kardashian of the cricket world, Pandya boasted of 'conquests' and possessions like a Desperado, unlike a cricketer and definitely not in sync with a youth icon. For someone who was introduced by Karan Johar as 'tomorrow's hopeful future' on his show, the 25-year-old still has a long way to go to fit that bill. And, if we cannot expect a cricketer like Pandya to be more responsible in his demeanour off the field, then all the 'Me Too' campaigns and women empowerment drives would mean nothing in our society.
  19. Ever since his debut in 2004, Dale Steyn has managed to enthral cricket fraternity and fans with his steaming fast bowling across formats. Thanks to his extreme pace, ability to swing the ball both ways and commendable accuracy; Steyn has not only established himself as one of the best fast bowlers in the business, but probably South Africa's best ever. If that wasn't enough, Steyn's scary eyes, throbbing veins and a chainsaw celebration have all culminated to brand him as one of the most feared bowlers in modern-day cricket. But, over the years, Steyn's obsession of sprinting in and delivering that ripper of an outswinger has taken a toll over his ageing body. And, the fact that he has struggled to remain fit has often robbed cricket of his priceless duels with opposition batsmen. © Reuters But, on a day when the cricket fraternity and fans were busy relishing the batting genius of young Mayank Agarwal in Melbourne, Steyn quietly went about his business and etched his name in the history books as South Africa's most successful bowler in Tests. Playing in the Boxing Day Test between Pakistan and South Africa in Centurion, the 35-year-old pacer dismissed Fakhar Zaman after forcing an edge off his bat towards the slip cordon in the seventh over of their first innings. In the process, Steyn claimed his 422nd wicket in the longest format which also sent him past Shaun Pollock, whose record had stood since he quit in 2008. And, as he was being lifted shoulder-high by his teammates, Pollock gave him a thumbs-up who was reciprocated with the same gesture by Steyn. While Steyn couldn't bag more wickets, especially after his fellow paceman Duanne Olivier claimed impressive figures of 6-37 to skittle Pakistan out for just 181 runs in the first innings, the Proteas veteran garnered plaudits from all corners of the globe for his latest feat. 20. In recent time, Kapil Sharma has either been in the news for his fight with Sunil Grover or his reverse transformation, but this time Kapil is in news for his noble gesture that deserves all the respect in the world. Reportedly, Kapil Sharma donated the extra food from his wedding and reception to an NGO called Feeding India, who distributed the food to the underprivileged. The founder of Feeding India, Ankit Kawatra said in a statement "Kapil Sharma is setting an example for others to follow by donating excess food from his big day. 21. Soaring high up in the sky, maneuvering a loaded, uber-hefty aircraft under your able hands, and zooming around the sky fighting enemy planes in the sky, is a dream many young boys come to live for. However, the same cannot be said for young girls, who usually do not even consider being fighter pilots on most perfect days. © TOI But this scenario might be changing real soon because young women are now constantly proving that sky is indeed the limit when it comes to dreaming big, and living it too. One such stellar example is that of Priya Sharma from Rajasthan, who decided to go all out and turn her dream into a reality by donning that hat of India's 7th woman fighter pilot, in the otherwise male dominated industry. © TOI Not just that, Priya has now also become the 3rd woman fighter pilot to come out of the western state. As per reports, out of the 139 cadets that graduated from the Indian Air Force academy in Dundigul, only 35 were fighter pilots and Priya happened to be the only woman amongst the lot! It was her father's posting at the Air Force station in Karnataka that first sowed the seed of becoming a fighter, and well there was no going back on it with her graduation now! © BCCL This is a proud moment for our nation, but more so for the young girls and women, who had so far stuck to more “regular” career choices in this field. © Panchayat Times Earlier with Avani Chaturvedi who made history by flying solo on a fighter jet, and now with Priya joining the league of female fighter pilots in the country, we can only wish them greater successes in the future.
  22. Last month, when the selectors announced the Indian squad for the T20I series against West Indies and Australia, there was a lot of hue and cry over the exclusion of Mahendra Singh Dhoni - one of the most iconic cricketers in the country. While the fans slammed the Indian team management, Dhoni clarified that he ruled himself out of the two series before throwing his weight behind young Rishabh Pant as his successor behind the stumps. Not many were convinced with Dhoni's prediction about Pant, especially amid the availability of senior wicket-keepers Wriddhiman Saha (currently injured) and Dinesh Karthik still in the fold. However, contrary to popular perception, the team management and captain Virat Kohli placed their faith in fairly inexperienced Pant to come good and the youngster didn't disappoint. Repaying the faith of the selectors and Kohli, Pant, given the ever-changing match situations, added valuable runs (25 & 28) to the Indian total across the two innings at the Adelaide Oval. But, his biggest contribution in India's 31-run triumph in the first Test came from behind the stumps. © AP Proving his predecessor Dhoni right, Pant equalled the world record of most catches taken by a wicket-keeper in a single Test match. The Delhi cricketer took 11 catches against Australia in Adelaide and matched the heroics of Jack Russell and AB de Villiers - both of whom were earlier standing tall with the unique feat. The 21-year-old caught six batsmen - Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Tim Paine, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood - in the first innings and then took five more catches in the second. Pant equalled the world record for most catches in a single Test in the 101th over when Mohammed Shami got Starc to edge one through to the Indian wicket-keeper. © AP Russell, De Villiers and Pant are now followed by Bob Taylor, Adam Gilchrist and Saha who have taken 10 catches apiece in a single Test match. Pant is now the only Indian at the top of the list, overtaking Saha at the Adelaide Oval. Overall, Pant has already taken 31 catches in six Tests and, should he improve his wicket-keeping skills, the youngster can surely give Saha a run for his money as India's first-choice keeper in the longest version of the game.
  23. Ahead of their much-anticipated tour of Australia, the Indian cricket team knew they had a potential chance of creating history Down Under. While they were heavily favoured in the limited-overs series, the biggest test for the visiting side was undoubtedly the Tests where the hostile conditions posed a major threat for the Indian cricketers. But, contrary to popular perception, the Indian team put their best foot forward in the first Test and showed everyone why they are the No. 1 side in the longest version of the game. Showcasing great temperament and maturity, the visitors checked all the boxes in what eventually turned into a brilliant 31-run win at the Adelaide Oval. If the batsmen appeared responsible against the Aussies, the bowlers showcased versatility as the game progressed through the days. It's needless to say that the Indian side looked convincing in almost every session over a span of five days to eventually script a memorable win. And, as India took a 1-0 lead in the four-match series, skipper Virat Kohli, too, etched his name in the history books. © AP For a man who has witnessed a marauding run this year, Kohli couldn't do much with the willow as he managed to score just 3 & 34 across two innings. But, even if his bat couldn't breathe fire, Kohli, with his impeccable leadership skills, still clinched the unique feat of becoming the first-ever Asian captain to win a Test match in at least South Africa, England and Australia. Kohli-led India, that also became the first Indian side to win an opening Test in a series on the Australian soil, started the year on a promising note when they toured the Proteas. Despite losing the first two Tests in Centurion and Cape Town, the out-of-sorts Kohli brigade made a noticeable comeback and went on to win the third game at Johannesburg. Their next big stop was then in England where Kohli had witnessed a dismal outing back in 2014. As many would have anticipated, India began the Test series poorly, losing the first two games. But, as witnessed in South Africa, the Indian team bounced back in the third Test at Nottingham where an emphatic 203-run win once again proved what this side was capable of. Though Kohli's men lost the Test series 4-1, their outing in English conditions was still far better than those of their predecessors. © Reuters Apart from his team, Kohli himself had a brilliant run in both South Africa and England. Proving his class against the Proteas, Kohli emerged as the highest run-getter amongst the two sides in the Test series, scoring 286 runs in 6 innings at an average of 47.67. In England, Kohli silenced his naysayers by scoring 593 runs in 10 innings at a brilliant average of 59.30, showing how far he has come since his forgettable outing last time around. Though there are still three more Tests to go Down Under and Australia, despite the absence of their stalwarts Steve Smith and David Warner, still pose threat to India, the Kohli brigade, for now, can bask in the glory of a brilliant team effort that has allowed them to take a crucial 1-0 lead in what promises to be an exciting series.
  24. Over the years, the world of cricket has witnessed many opening batsmen making their mark in international cricket. From Saeed Anwar, Mathew Hayden to Virender Sehwag, all these Phenoms had a special talent of hitting the ball long and strong. While their blistering batting performances cut a sorry figure for the opposition bowlers, it also provided their respective sides roaring starts in the game. In the modern era of the sport, Rohit Sharma seems to be doing that job for India in limited-overs cricket. Rapidly establishing his reputation as one of the most destructive openers in the game, Rohit's malleable wrists and knack to find gaps with effortless drives have allowed India to set the ball rolling early in the innings. © BCCL While his job in the Indian line-up is predominantly at the top of the order, providing flying starts to his team, Rohit seems to have swapped his role as Virat Kohli's men get engrossed with the much-anticipated tour of Australia. Swapping his willow for a camera, Rohit seems to have become Team India's official photographer Down Under. The 31-year-old decided to test his 'shooting skills' with the camera as he went behind the lens to click the photos of Manish Pandey ahead of their first T20I at the Gabba. While Manish missed out on the spot in India's 12-man side for the first T20I, he was adequately aided by Rohit for the video. Directing Pandey to act for the video, Rohit said some encouraging words: "Pretend as if you're getting ready. It'll be just 10 seconds. You've to do something. I am going to do some direction. Let's see how it goes. A bit of a camera work rather, not direction actually," Rohit explained to the viewers. While the candid video brought a smile to the faces of Indian cricket fans, they will now be hoping for the 'Hitman' to resume his cricketing duties as the Kohli brigade gears up to establish dominance Down Under.
  25. Earlier this summer, Cristiano Ronaldo sent shockwaves across the footballing world after announcing that he was seeking a move away from Real Madrid right after their UEFA Champions League title triumph. With many potential suitors in fray to secure his services, it was eventually Juventus who shelled out 100 million euros to rope in the five-time Ballon d'Or winner. But, Ronaldo's beginning with the Italian club hasn't quite been what many had anticipated. The Portuguese initially struggled to find the back of the net, going goalless in 320 minutes across three games before breaking the drought with a brace against Sassuolo. Goals then came against Frosinone, Udinese and now Genoa, alongside his five assists. After treading with caution early on with Juve, Ronaldo was getting to his prolific best when the allegations of rape against him began doing the rounds in the media. While his public image did take a hit, Ronaldo didn't let it affect his performance on the pitch. Reuters In September, the 33-year-old was named the Most Valuable Player of the month for Juventus. And, more recently, the modern-day footballing great etched his name in the history books for yet another individual milestone. The Portuguese superstar scored his fifth goal for Juventus after opening the scoring against Genoa. And, in the process, he became the first footballer ever to score 400 goals across Europe's top five leagues. Ronaldo achieved the feat in the 17th minute of the Serie A clash when he tapped the ball from close range following a Juventus corner. The goal allowed Ronaldo to notch up his 400th goal in his 497th appearance across Europe's top five leagues. Apart from his five goals for Juventus, Ronaldo boasts of 84 strikes for Manchester United and 311 for his old club Real Madrid. Reuters His iconic goal against Genoa also put him in the elite list of footballers who have scored 400 career league goals - Josef Bican (518), Ferenc Puskas (514), Jimmy McGory (410) and Uwe Seeler (406). Apart from that, Ronaldo has also edged past his arch-rival Lionel Messi who is currently at 389 goals in 426 appearances. Following a brilliant week, Ronaldo's eyes will now be set on enthralling the hallowed Old Trafford with a sublime performance when his side Juventus locks horns with Manchester United in the Champions League group-stage clash on 24th October.
