  1. It has been a little over two and a half months since two-time Indian Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar was accused of murdering a fellow wrestler Sagar Rana by beating him to a pulp with a stick and asking one of his goons to record the whole act on video. Since then, Kumar has run away, deceived and escaped the Delhi Police, and was ultimately caught, smack in the middle of a highway. After being arrested, Kumar’s case has been making constant rounds of the judicial court and his custody is being played hot potato with, between the judicial system and the law enforcers. View this post on Instagram Finally, it was decided that Kumar will be transferred to Tihar Jail, one of the biggest prisons in the world where the most dangerous, and evidently the most important criminals are kept and if you are really lucky (or have achieved celebrity status), you will get to make unnecessary demands as a prisoner and your wishes will come true. Kumar has all of the above and so when the wrestler made a request to have a television set up for him to watch the 2020 edition of the Olympics in Tokyo, the men at Tihar said “Sure! Why not?” Delhi's Tihar Jail will arrange a TV in common area of the ward where wrestler Sushil Kumar, accused in murder case of wrestler Sagar Rana, is lodged. All the medals won by Sushil Kumar should be taken from him. We believe that police will investigate properly but Sushil will try to influence it by using his political links," Rana's mother argued, according to India Today. "We are hoping for justice. Where did he go when he was absconding, who gave him shelter, and most importantly the gangsters with whom he is connected to. He should be hanged so that people learn a lesson and think before killing his own pupil," said Rana’s father. View the full article
  2. Emergence of potholes and someone falling into that sinkhole is inevitable as soon as the rains start. It has not been even a month since the monsoon started and we already know of two incidents where a car was submerged under a pothole in the biggest cities like Mumbai and Delhi. © Twitter/ANI As Indians, we are so used to potholes and sinkholes on roads, especially during the monsoon season, that we don’t even see it as a big deal now. We don’t even complain about it anymore and go about our day after seeing a vehicle being swallowed by a pothole or a big truck getting stuck in it. © iStock But if you thought it only happens in India, you are wrong. As it turns out, it happens everywhere including the most developed countries like the UK. However, the difference is that these countries take the time and effort to fix the damaged roads. Someone on Twitter shared a picture of a road in Britain which was damaged and reconstructed. They wrote, “Only in Britain would a road look like this.” Only in Britain would a road look like this. pic.twitter.com/hIfTdaXlCq — No Context Brits (@NoContextBrits) July 17, 2021 Honestly, a road patched up after it’s ruined by the rains is a dream for desis. Indians responded with pictures of worse road situations in India and told the OP that maybe ‘what only happens in Britain’ is that you get the roads fixed up after rains, because potholes happen everywhere and we have to kind of live with that. At least they try to patch it up. Here are the best ones that prove it’s more of a global problem in monsoon. We sure the British guy isn’t feeling too bad about the neat and timely patched up roads in his homeland now. Happy monsoon, BTW. View the full article
  3. In a world where we catch up on plenty of rom-com movies on our TV screens on a regular basis, there are a few times we actually come across a sweet, funny real-life story of a girl and a boy actually ending up together. © Dune Entertainment One such story is that of Chandi Chandran, an IAS officer, who eventually ended up marrying her boyfriend, Arun Sudarsan. © Chandi Chandran The story goes back to 2016 when Chandran was one of the many aspirants who after appearing for the grueling Civil Service examinations was waiting for her results. Such was the stress for the results, that she would try to go out for walks with Arun (back when they were dating) to ease off some tension. However, a funny thing happened and one day before the exam results when she had been on a usual walk with Arun while sharing an umbrella in the rain, a newspaper photographer took the couple's picture as part of a piece on rain in the city. Coincidently, the picture of them sharing an umbrella came next to the list of the UPSC toppers, and unfortunately for Chandran, she couldn't clear the exam. Chandran, who cleared the exams in 2017 and is now posted as sub-divisional magistrate of Kanchanpur, North Tripura, explained the incident using a Twitter thread. May 10, 2016.Results of Civil Service Exam 2015 was expected to be out & I was roaming with @mrarunsudarsan to not stress over it. I didn't make it. 4. Yes, you read that right. As a Delhiite, two sets of emotions have probably hit you with this headline. You are either elated, your Whatsapp family/friends groups are already buzzing, or, like most of us, you are wondering if this just another ploy to ‘divert’ the attention from the living hell that the capital city turned into, courtesy the deadly Covid wave that attacked us. The Delhi government has announced that home delivery of Indian and foreign liquor will now be allowed through an app and a web portal. The delivery will not be done at a hostel, office or an institution. As soon as the news came in, people on social media were divided in their opinion. A lot of people are actually happy about this and to mark this celebration, memes have obviously started floating. 5. Ramdev knows how to stay in the headlines. That really doesn't mean that there are lessons to be learnt there, as unfortunately the saying 'any publicity is good publicity' more or less applies here. He has been giving controversial, and utterly worrisome statements left, right, and centre, and it looks like people have had it with him now. via GIPHY As if his supremely irresponsible and outright ignorant commentary throughout the years (remember when he said Yoga 'cures' homosexuality - like it's a disease?) weren't enough, last week he really did piss the nation off by making another bunch of supremely stupid commentary on Allopathy. 7. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a gem that Bollywood discovered not so long ago and he has created a place for himself in the industry with his dedication and hard work. He has his own niche fan base and we all know that he is an outstanding actor. The audience loves him for the roles he chooses and also that he has an extraordinarily powerful screen presence that made him what he is today. During the beginning of his career in the industry, he did many supporting roles in films and was also able to outshine the main lead with his acting. We all know that he is a great actor and we have watched some films just to witness his stellar acting. View this post on Instagram In one of his recent interviews, he said that aspiring actors need to make sure they have their unique style of acting while entering the industry. He also said that if they intend to copy superstars, they will never be able to connect with the audience. He said, “I would just like to say from my experience that you should not lose your originality. These superstars do fake acting, so don't get carried away with it. I want to see your original acting. If you are acting like a superstar, why would I watch you? If you show something good, something that is interesting and original, I would want to see that.” View this post on Instagram Nawazuddin Siddiqui is one of the most critically acclaimed actors. He is known for his work in films like Manjhi: The Mountain Man, Raman Raghav 2.0, Gangs of Wasseypur, and many more. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was last seen in the Netflix original Raat Akeli. 8. Indian business tycoon Gautam Adani has beaten the likes of Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mukesh Ambani, in a rather unique metric. He has added more to his wealth than any other businessman in the world, as per a report by Bloomberg. © Adani Group Just to be clear, he hasn’t toppled the big two, Bezos & Musk as the richest individuals on earth, not yet at least. However, if this is the rate at which Adani and his businesses grow, if this is how the investors in the stock market continue to favour his enterprises, that day shouldn’t be that far off. © Reuters Adani has added over $16.2 Billion to his net worth, thanks to the massive and rapid expansion that his businesses, which range from shipping ports to power plants, and now data centres, have seen. © Reuters Most of Adani’s businesses have seen rather spectacular growth. Adani Total Gas Ltd. for example has jumped 96 per cent this year. Adani Power Ltd. and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zones Ltd. on the other hand, have gained more than 52 per cent this year. © Reuters As per a report filed by Business Line, shares of all Adani group stocks, except one, have rallied at least 50 per cent this year. © Reuters Coming back to the $16.2 billion figure, if you still aren’t fazed by the figure, we’re sure the figure in Indian Rupees will baffle you. It stands at Rs 11,77,56,58,50,000. Good luck trying to read that number as per the Indian numerical system. Adani is not the only one who has added exponentially to their net worth this year. Larry Page & Sergey Brin, the former bosses at Google added about $14.3 Billion & $13.8 Billion respectively. © Reuters Investment Guru Warren Buffet, too, added a handsome $12.1 Billion to his net worth. © Reuters Indian people on Twiter, though, were not particularly happy about this, for a number of reasons. 9. When it comes to Bollywood, there is no shortage of celebrities who have aged like fine wine. Think Anil Kapoor and R Madhavan, who have proved that age is just a number. Amongst the lot, Dangal star Aamir Khan has always managed to stand out, if you ask us. While he has proven to be a 'perfectionist' with his immaculate acting skills, it won't be wrong to call him a fashion aficionado as well, given the way he dresses every time he steps out. Be it his airport looks or just casual outings, Aamir has impressed us with his unabashed sartorial journey, wearing ensembles that hardly other celebs have tried out. © Viral Bhayani While most young actors these days are experimenting with their looks, wearing edgy pair of sneakers and outlandish outfits, Aamir has always done fashion differently as he has been seen either in boots or his favourite desi Kolhapuris, several times. What He Wore: © Viral Bhayani He recently made an appearance in an outfit, that truly surpassed the basic quotient. At first, it might look super casual but this is quite a fashionable look, if you ask us, as many people would fail to combine such an outfit. Aamir has been consistent with the blue T-shirt that he is wearing here. Even though it is basic, the way he has decked up, speaks volumes about his fashion sense. © Viral Bhayani What we also like is how he has coupled the blue T-shirt with black shorts. These type of shorts are quite comfortable and a failsafe way to dress down. These are unbeatably versatile and also indisputable summer style. © Viral Bhayani While a pair of trainers or slip-on canvas would have been a good option, Aamir rather did a 180 wearing his Kolhapuris, instead of settling for footwear that most celebs usually wear. We think this works well, due to the colour tone and also the quirky little tassels emblazoned on them. Overall, it adds a casual spin to the whole look and to be honest, we might give this a shot too. Why It Works: © Viral Bhayani On days, when you don't feel like dressing up, Aamir's style experiment looks fuss-free and a fashionable way to go. Even though Kolhapuris pair well with traditional ensembles, we think Aamir might have just started a trend of his own, by combining casualwear with ethnic footwear. It's a good option when you don't want to think too hard. As for his accessories, he wore blue, round eyeglasses and a mask with strings. On the work front, Aamir will be seen next in Laal Singh Chaddha opposite Kareena Kapoor Khan which's set to release in 2021. View the full article
  10. So much has been normalized in the last year - boycotting something you find mildly offensive, targeting people, and personally attacking them if they don't share the same viewpoints as you, filing FIRs for basically no reason. A lot of people have said that taking offence has become a new national hobby, apparently, and every single day that is proved right by multiple people. Recently, activist Greta Thunberg showed her support for the farmers protesting in India and shared how people can actually protest all over the world and help the cause. © Reuters Even after being trolled for it, she's still not backing down. She's showing support, and she, along with Rihanna, has helped push one of the biggest protests to a global level. Here’s an updated toolkit by people on the ground in India if you want to help. (They removed their previous document as it was outdated.)#StandWithFarmers #FarmersProtesthttps://t.co/ZGEcMwHUNL — Greta Thunberg (@GretaThunberg) February 3, 2021 Of course, that resulted in the entire debate about how this is India's 'internal matter' and outsiders shouldn't comment on it, even though it has gone way past that and become a human rights crisis. When farmers were dying, no celebrity bothered speaking up, but when 'outsiders' got involved, all of them woke up to reiterate that this is an internal matter in the same words. Side note, why didn't they follow their advice when they were posting black squares for Black Lives Matter? Hmm, much to think about. Coming back to Greta, the 18-year-old Swedish environmental activist is now a target for the Delhi Police as reportedly they are filing an FIR against her for her tweets in support of farmers. #Breaking | Delhi Police to file an FIR against Greta Thunberg over tweets on farmers' protests. Details by Priyank Tripathi. pic.twitter.com/ixpImdeAhp — TIMES NOW (@TimesNow) February 4, 2021 Greta has graciously responded to the development saying that she's not backing down. I still #StandWithFarmers and support their peaceful protest. No amount of hate, threats or violations of human rights will ever change that. #FarmersProtest — Greta Thunberg (@GretaThunberg) February 4, 2021 But, the question is what will this FIR even result in? 13. Dheeraj Dhoopar, who is seen as Karan Luthra in Kundali Bhagya, has successfully managed to impress the audience with his acting prowess. However, the TV actor also has a penchant for fashion and style. His sense of style is functional and he has been seen fusing that into his everyday style as well. As a matter of fact, Dheeraj's sartorial choices are flamboyant, and he has also experimented with silhouettes that Ranveer might have worn sometime. Take a look here: © Instagram/Dheeraj Dhoopar © Viral Bhayani Hoodies usually have a zip with kangaroo pockets at the front but the style that Dheeraj has donned literally has 'naadas' hanging at the back. Not just that, it looks like they are coming out from near the pockets as well as from the hood. Does it not look strange? We reckon so. © Viral Bhayani Coming to his sneakers, he has embraced the dad sneaker style here and the edgy pair is sitting perfectly with his casual outfit, adding that raw and rugged feel to the look. In all, this sums up to be the best functional outfit, Dheeraj. Way to go! View the full article
  14. Most fashion trends are quite hard to wrap our heads around. While some trends are able to find a place in our wardrobes, others only put us in a dilemma, making us question their very existence. Recently, the Italian luxury fashion brand, Gucci caused quite a stir online over one of its big-ticket items - case in point, the inverted cat eye accessory. © Gucci These glasses were listed on the website as ''An unconventional take on the '50s and '60s inspired cat-eye frames, these sunglasses are presented with an inverted design that created an 'upside down' effect.'' "The frames and temples are created using multiple layers of black and white acetate. Enamelled floral details and a petite 'Gucci' logo further enrich the design." © Gucci The brand has been raising eyebrows for selling these upside-down sunglasses for $ 755 which converts to Rs 55,572. That's quite outrageous for glasses that look so bizarre. Gucci also announced free delivery for this product. As soon as this happened, people started reacting on Twitter with memes and jokes. While this may not seem unusual to Gucci lovers, these sunglasses are making a lot of regular folks ask one question- 'Why Gucci? 15. If someone said that the Indian version of Twitter would actually be called Tooter, you would think that it's pretty clearly a joke. But sadly, an app called Tooter does exist and it's basically a discount Twitter. The Swadeshi social network, which is ‘Made in India’, is marketed as an alternative to the 'American social network' sites (while blatantly taking the same interface, but let's just ignore that for now). © Tooter Coming back to the actual app, it's almost an exact copy of Twitter, right from the blue colour to the entire user interface. Well, I guess, you toot instead of tweet on there, probably. Earlier, they used to come under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology while other media like print, television, and radio came under the I&B ministry. 18. One of the only reasons we hate 2020 a little less is that it gave us the second season of the eagerly awaited show Mirzapur. Everyone was dying to witness the fate of Kaleen bhaiya, the trivial doings of Munna Tripathi and the thirst of vengeance that Guddu Pandit and Golu were carrying. Well, the show has received some rave reviews and it sure was a satisfying watch. So here are six other such shows that you would want to not miss out on if you were the kinds to finish Mirzapur 2 in one sitting. 1. Sacred GamesOne of the biggest shows on Netflix India which put our home bred shows on the global map. Starring Nawazuddin and Saif Ali Khan in lead roles, this show explores what goes around in the underbelly of the criminal world in Mumbai. Don’t miss this cat-mouse chase if you still haven’t watched it. Also, the second season stars Mirzapur’s star Pankaj Tripathi in a pretty meaty role. © Netflix 2. AaryaThis is one emotional roller coaster that will keep you on the edge as it follows the struggles of a mother and wife as she takes over her deceased husband’s business and unravels some murky details of the trade. Sushmita Sen is splendid in this one, so you cannot miss it. © Disney+ HotStar 3. Criminal JusticeFirstly, it stars Pankaj Tripathi and Vikrant Massey in lead roles so some Mirzapur hangover will be taken care of. Secondly, the intriguing plot is adapted for Indian audiences from the original and follows a clueless human who wakes up one morning covered in blood after a one-night stand. 4. Peaky BlindersThis British crime drama follows gang leader Tommy Shelby who runs his own gang in a post World War I era and is in a war of his own with the authorities. A must-watch if you want some classic old-school crime story for aesthetic viewing. © Netflix 5. NarcosYou obviously have heard about it even if you haven’t watched it. This one chronicles the drug trade racket in Colombia and the terror materialised courtesy drug king-pin Pablo Escobar. 6. RaktanchalThis one has its setting in Puravanchal, Uttar Pradesh and tells a gripping story of the dark crime scene of the 80s in the state and is a very interesting watch. View the full article

However, now that we are stuck amid a pandemic and canât go on any vacation, we canât deny that we miss our Goa plans. © Unsplash Recently, Goaâs Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar announced that it has re-opened for tourism. This is big news and around 250 hotels in Goa have been permitted to resume operations and take tourist bookings. Manohar Ajgaonkar said, "We have decided to allow domestic travelers to enter Goa from July 2 onwards provided they comply with certain norms.â The decision was taken by the Goa CM Pramod Sawant in a cabinet meeting. © Unsplash So, all you need to do is follow a certain set of rules or you wonât be allowed to enter the state. Here you go- 1. You need a COVID-19 certificate that tells you are coronavirus negative and should be of only the past 48 hours or youâll have to get tested for the same in Goa. 2. Anyone who tests Coronavirus positive would either be sent back or stay in quarantine until their test result is declared negative. 3. Travelers need to pre-book their stay at hotels that are approved by the government to operate amid pandemic. 4. If in case you booked a non-approved hotel, youâll be sent back and the same would be deemed illegal. 20. The coronavirus outbreak and lockdown has made us witness a number of incidents we may not have thought possible in the pre-COVID world. From wild beasts roaming the city streets to people thrashing doctors and nurses for trying to keep them safe, and the poor stepping up to fund coronavirus relief work, we have seen the best and worst of it all. © Pexels (Representative Image) However, it seems thereâs a lot more for us to see yet, just like the peculiar case of this Tamil Nadu man named Prashant. The 30-year-old man is creating quite a buzz online for being a âconsiderateâ thief who returned a stolen bike to its owner via courier. So here is the complete story. On 18th May, Prashant, who works at a bakery in Coimbatore, stole Suresh Kumarâs bike parked nearby his lathe workshop in Kannampalayam Pirivu area in Coimbatore. Prashantâs reason for stealing the bike was simple; he wished to go back to his hometown in the nearby district of Tiruvarur and needed a ride. Suresh Kumarâs parked bike served the purpose. © Pexels When Kumar found out that his bike was missing, he went to the police station to file an FIR. However, he was told that investigation of the matter will only be taken up after the lockdown is revoked. In the meantime, Kumar made use of CCTV footage from around the area to trace the identity of Prashant. Realising the owner is trying to track him and fearing legal action against himself, Prashant decided to send the bike back via courier service, using the details he found on the bikeâs Registration Certificate. © Pexels Thatâs how Kumar ended up getting a call from the courier office yesterday that his bike was ready to be delivered. Given that his bike was returned to him in good condition, Suresh told the media that he will not take any legal action against Prashant. Talk about being a thief with a conscience, right? 21. The war of words between video content platforms YouTube and TikTok began a couple of weeks ago when CarryMinati decided to roast Amir Siddiqui in a video titled âYouTube Vs Tiktok - The Endâ and it ended up taking over the internet. His video got polarising reviews. Not only did it become the most liked (non-music) video on YouTube India but also made those who were against the Chinese app, create fake Google accounts just to give bad ratings to TikTok on the Play Store and App Store. On the other hand, the supporters of Amir and other TikTok fans went on the offence and got CarryMinatiâs video pulled down by reporting it to YouTube, the company itself. While some find CarryMinatiâs videos entertaining and unconditionally hilarious and even call him the best âroasterâ of India, others have called him crass, sexist and somebody who doesnât understand what âcomedyâ really is. Indian comedian Kunal Kamra clearly belongs to the second category as the man uploaded a video on his YouTube channel titled âAaja Beta Carry Teko Roast Sikhaye!â on Friday in which he roasts the young online sensation. He talks about how in the name of comedy, CarryMinati only knows how to abuse, doesnât take the time to write his âjokesâ and essentially, how much his content sucks (followed by a million OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHâs). Now, some people are calling out Kamra for trying to make his cut to trending fame by getting involved in something he had nothing to do with in the first place, and that he only wanted to show that he is relevant as well. I think the only reason that #kunalkamra made this shitty video is so that @CarryMinati would notice him, roast him back and he would gain some publicity and attention of #carryminatiâs fan-club to make himself famous and known. Cheap trick but canât expect more!#carryminati â Amruta Chandra (@amy_chndra) May 30, 2020 However, it seems as if Kamraâs move to roast the hottest YouTuber in India right now simply blew up in his face. The video was uploaded less than 24 hours ago and while it has gotten over two million views, it has also garnered over seven lakh dislikes. Many have confessed to not even watching the first minute of the video and simply going to the link just to press the dislike button. And believe it or not, Twitter has been overflowing with CarryMinati supporters conducting a roast for themselves with Kamra at the centre of it: After seeing Kunal kamra roasting carry minati... But are you telling me I am supposed to be âcoolâ with it, after being witness to the numerous times she has made her anti-Pakistan stand crystal clear for the world to see? Alright, letâs give her the benefit of the doubt here. The poster girl of Indian nationalism wears Pakistani brands and also makes fiery comments on how Pakistan should be destroyed and boycotted. Aise kaise chalega madam! pic.twitter.com/T2fsNpXrtI â Zoya Rasul (@zoyarasul) April 14, 2020 I mean, by all means, itâs a free country, itâs her hard-earned money, her clothes, her choice and her life - oh and it's her sister's democracy too perhaps, but, where does all of that fit in the larger narrative of saying no to all things âPakistanâ that you swear by? © Instagram But again, it shouldnât come as a surprise because while perhaps you and I hate living in contradictions, Kangana has done that before too. Right from calling her âPakistanâs destructionâ comment an emotional outburst to not pulling down her own movie Manikarnika from Pakistani theatres, we have seen her make many a concessions for anti-nationalism every now and then. 23. Actor Urvashi Rautela rose to fame in 2015 by representing India at the Miss Universe 2015 pageant. Since then, she's acted in a few Bollywood films but in recent times, she has become more popular for notorious internet crimes like stealing captions or even tweets from other celebrities and politicians. Although, there have been reports that suggest that it is, in fact, her social media team behind this and not her. Recently, she came under fire for copying Siddharth Malhotra's tweet among the long list of celebrities whose captions/ tweets she's plagiarised in the past. 1. It all started when Bollywood actor Sidharth Malhotra took to Twitter to share a video and thank Mumbai Police. Here, take a look: This is the time to heartily thank our Mumbai police, who are leaving their families at home & working with their high spirit and untiring efforts for our security and safety.. You guys are the real heroes #ThankYouMumbaiPolice#LoveYouMumbaiPolice@MumbaiPolice https://t.co/j1R9Rxv3ul â Sidharth Malhotra (@SidMalhotra) April 9, 2020 This was followed by Urvashi Rautela's post which was eerily similar. Urvashi has copied PM Narendra Modi's tweet as well. After Shabana Azmi met with an accident, Urvashi took to Twitter to wish her a speedy recovery. Except Twitter was quick to point out that it was, in fact, PM Modi's tweet that she had lifted. The news of @AzmiShabana Jiâs injury in an accident is distressing. I pray for her quick recovery. â Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) January 18, 2020 And here's Urvashi's tweet. The news of @AzmiShabana Jiâs injury in an accident is distressing. I pray for her quick recovery. â URVASHI RAUTELAð®ð³ (@UrvashiRautela) January 18, 20203. In another instance, Urvashi stole a Tweet on the film Parasite from a New York-based author, JP Brammer. He had tweeted a critique that was blatantly copied and posted on Urvashi account. He reposted the tweet and wondered why she did not correct the grammar of the text, âIâm rooting for her. why didnât she at least correct the grammar um my bad grammar?? is part of the vibe??? wow.â he added. © Twitter 4. This is probably the most popular of the list. Amid rumours of Urvashi dating Chunky Pandey's nephew, she took to Instagram to shut down the speculation with a post and a long caption. However, as it turned out, the caption was an exact replica of Gigi Hadid's caption that she had posted in response to speculations of her dating Zayn Malik. Diet Sabya was one of the first accounts to point this fallacy. 24. If you're a Star Wars fan, it's likely that you'll remember the iconic twin suns of Tatooine: Cool, aren't they? A young intern at NASA however, has just discovered a new planet - where you might be able to spot the greatest sunrise of all time - with two suns at once. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, also known as TESS, is a specialised space telescope that was launched into orbit by SpaceX in 2018 with the specific purpose of discovering exoplanets. The term refers to planets outside of the solar system, and as you might imagine, they're not particularly easy to spot. © NASA; An illustration of TESS working in orbit. The most common method of discovering them is locating dark spots in front of distant stars - caused by planets revolving around their respective stars and blocking their light from reaching us. This phenomenon is known as a 'transit', and TESS is able to detect them by using four powerful cameras to capture 1296 images of the same patch of sky across 27 days - that's a single hi-res image every half-hour. © NASA; Optics engineer Greg Balonek prepares a TESS flight lens for modal testing at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. The intern, Wolf Cukier, joined NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, after his junior year of high school at Scarsdale High School in New York. He was assigned to study variations in star brightness captured by TESS and upload it to the Planet Hunters TESS citizen science project. © New York Post; Wolf sitting at his desk in a NASA jumper. Note the physics textbooks and telescope - he's clearly in the perfect line of work. "I was looking through the data for everything the volunteers had flagged as an eclipsing binary, a system where two stars circle around each other and from our view eclipse each other every orbit," Cukier said in a statement from NASA. "About three days into my internship, I saw a signal from a system called TOI 1338. At first I thought it was a stellar eclipse, but the timing was wrong. It turned out to be a planet." What's remarkable about Cukier's discovery is that the planet is 'circumbinary' - revolving around two suns instead of one like in the solar system. There are only about two dozen such planets discovered, making the intern's fortunate finding all the more special. Designated as TOI 1338 b, it is the only planet in the TOI 1338 system and revolves around the twin suns every 95 days - both of them revolve around each other much faster at 15 days and are considerably different from each other. One is 10% larger than our Sun, while the other is just a third of the Sun's mass, and is much dimmer and smaller. If you're looking to catch that special sunset however, it's quite unlikely - the system is 1,300 light years away from Earth, and is 6.9 times the size of our planet - making it likely that even if we survive the journey and the harsh radiation and heat from two suns, TOI 1338 b's gravity is likely to crush us like a grape. Unfortunately for Wolf, he doesn't get to name his discovery - although his brother suggests that 'Wolftopia' would be pretty cool. View the full article
  25. There are days when the Indian Premier League (IPL) consists of non-stop action, world class cricket and becomes a source of brilliant sportsmanship, as cricketers from all over the world visit our country and play for eight of the highly celebrated and prestigious franchises and show respect towards each other. However, the day Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore and Ravichandran Ashwin's Kings XI Punjab locked horns in the former's home ground of M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, it wasn't one of those days. No thanks to the drama created by the RCB skipper, who made a rather “questionable” gesture with his hands after he dismissed the rival captain at the long on with a catch. Virat Kohli gesturing to Ashwin's Mankading absolute savage ! #RCBvKXIP pic.twitter.com/JPiFqM5IBm — Trojan_Horse (@sampath0272) April 24, 2019 Kohli's theatrics clearly worked wonders as Ashwin was visibly furious and threw a fit as soon as he reached the dugout, slamming his batting gloves on the ground in rage. Once the 'Play Bold' franchise were able to prevent Kings XI from chasing their total of 202 and won the match, a comparatively vented out Ashwin took to the microphone to describe the extremely animated exchange that took place between the two former teammates who once used to play for Team India. "I just played with passion, so does he (Virat). That's it. As simple as that," Ashwin said in the post-match press conference, trying to bury the matter and look forward. However, it's clear as day that Ashwin's team, Kings XI Punjab, weren't done with the Indian captain and decided to slay him with sarcasm. Organising their very first “Kuch Bhi Awards”, KXIP honoured Kohli with the 'Stuart Broad Humility Award.' Virat Kohli's gesture after taking our skipper Ashwin's catch has earned himself a Kuch Bhi Award from us. And during Kings XI Punjab match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, opposition skipper Virat Kohli showed just why he's hailed as a beacon of sportsmanship. After grabbing the match-winning catch, Kohli showed concern towards the batsman's well-being and politely asked, “How're you doing?” with a hand gesture,” says their website. “For this noble act, we give Kohli the Stuart Broad Humility Award and his team two points.” Now if a rival gang is throwing shade at your captain, how can you stay behind in responding?
