  1. President Arif Alvi on Monday expressed outrage at the brutal tactics being adopted by the government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to crush student protests in the capital New Delhi after a contentious citizenship bill was passed by the Indian parliament last week, sparking riots and violence. In a message posted on the social networking platform Twitter early on Monday morning, the president shared a video of an unidentified girl who, in the video, narrates the ordeal of a group of girls beaten with sticks by the police on Sunday at a mosque inside the Jamia Millia Islamia university in New Delhi.Violent protests have spread across India after the successful passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act in the Indian parliament. According to the new law, India will grant citizenship to people of numerous faiths fleeing persecution from Muslim-majority neighbouring countries, except Muslims. On Sunday, more than 100 activists protesting against the new law were injured in Delhi as they clashed with police who used tear gas and baton charges to disperse demonstrators. By Monday morning, the protests had spread to several university campuses across India, suggested reports. In the message shared on Twitter, President Alvi wrote, "Out of 1000s of messages that have come out of India since y/day, I am tweeting this one particularly as this girl cries & narrates the brutal police action on girls inside the mosque at Jamia Milia Univ in Delhi." "Modi Govt is at war with Muslims using fascist Hindutva barbarism," the president added, echoing the comparisons made by top Pakistani leadership to describe the actions of the Indian premier. Last week, Prime Minister Imran Khan had also compared Modi to world war II villain Hitler. Separately, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi also expressed concern over the “brutal and indiscriminate use of force” by the Indian state against the student protesters.Qureshi tweeted: “Concerned about the brutal & indiscriminate use of force by the state on Indian Muslim students of Jamia Millia Islamia & Aligarh Muslim University, protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.” The minister said the Modi government is curbing and undermining the rights of minorities in accordance with Hindutva supremacist ideology.Qureshi said, “Illegal annexation of Kashmir, Babari Masjid, Citizenship Amendment Bill which excludes Muslims are all targeted towards subjugation of minorities.”Blame game on as protests rage across IndiaThe protests have raged particularly in some eastern states such as Assam, Tripura and West Bengal, where resentment towards Bangladeshi immigrants has persisted for decades. Authorities have shut down internet access in several parts of the affected states. Modi, speaking at a rally in the eastern state of Jharkhand on Sunday, blamed the Congress party and its allies for inciting violence against the citizenship law. The Congress party in turn slammed Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, saying, the government had failed to maintain peace. Local authorities ordered all schools in southeast Delhi to remain closed on Monday. Jamia Millia university had already said, on Saturday, that it was closing early. The Aligarh Muslim University, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, announced it was shutting early after student protests.

  15. KARACHI: A conflicting report relating to the death of Amal surfaced on Sunday in which the private hospital where she sought treatment was held responsible for her death. However, a concluding note from the commission's chairperson stated otherwise. The report was prepared by an officer of the health care commission who held the National Medical Centre (NMC) responsible for the child's death. However, the commission's chairperson, Nargis Ghullu, did not hold the NMC responsible for negligence in treating Amal. The report was shared by Amal's father on social media who also uploaded the conclusion note from the commission's chairperson who exonerated the hospital. READ MORE: Amal Umer’s parents recall horrifying events that led to her death"The SHCC report shared with us on the 13th of November after a thorough investigation clearly states that National Medical Centre should be penalised on their negligence and callousness (left image)"On the other hand the SHCC chairman’s conclusion that was later submitted directly to the Supreme Court (right image) is a blatant contrast to their own findings."Shocked at this discrepancy. If the regulatory body colludes with the hospitals then what’s the use of passing any bills or acts," he wrote on a Facebook page titled "Justice for Amal Umer". On August 13, 10-year-old Amal Umer lost her life after being hit by a stray bullet during a police encounter in Karachi’s Akhtar Colony area. The bullet that hit Amal was from an AK-47 and was fired by a policeman attempting to kill a bandit, who had robbed the 10-year-old's family a few minutes earlier as they waited at a traffic light to attend a concert on the eve of Independence Day."We were travelling from Korangi Road towards FTC when a man approached us at the signal and asked us to hand over everything," Amal’s father, Umer, recalled while speaking on Geo Pakistan.“There was a lot of traffic at the signal at the time. The man took my wife’s phone and bag and then told us to roll up the windows and left,” he continued. "As soon as I started the car, we heard a gunshot and a bullet suddenly hit our windshield."Naturally, Umer and his wife, Beenish, turned back to check up on their two daughters sitting in the backseat, who they had asked to lie down when they heard the gunshots."When I turned, I saw Amal lying in a pool of blood and my other daughter clutching my seat," Umer said.Panicked, Umer tried to rush to nearby National Medical Centre (NMC). "I rolled down my window and asked people to clear the path. We did not know where the bullet had hit, as her hair was in her face and her eyes were open but there was a lot of blood,” he said. Luckily, they reached the hospital in three to five minutes. But, according to Umer, instead of being given immediate treatment, the hospital staff intubated Amal and attached an ambu bag and asked them to take her to Jinnah hospital as she "did not have much time” and this was a medico-legal case. But the hospital initially did not even help them arrange an ambulance, Beenish said. After much insistence, someone from the hospital called the Aman Foundation, who refused to send an ambulance till "arrangements were made" at Jinnah Hospital, she further said. "When we asked if we could take the ambu bag along, the NMC staff refused."By the time an ambulance reached them and they took their daughter to Jinnah Hospital it was too late. Amal had lost the battle for her life by then.

Photo: AFPSkipper Tim Paine believes Australia is climbing back towards the top of Test cricket after a third successive powerhouse victory at Perth Stadium on Sunday. The Australians thrashed New Zealand by 296 runs to continue a golden run in the local summer. After retaining the Ashes in England, the Australians have returned home to record successive inning victories over Pakistan and then one of their biggest-ever wins over their trans-Tasman rivals.Australia was rocked by the sandpaper scandal in South Africa in March last year after which Paine was appointed captain and star players Steve Smith and Dave Warner were banned from Test cricket, along with Cameron Bancroft. The home side went into the Perth Test ranked fifth on the International Cricket Council rankings, while New Zealand were second."We are getting there, but we can get better," he said."We are still improving, but certainly over the last 18 months there has been drastic improvement in this cricket team."We´ve got some players back, which are helping, but we have also seen some real improvement in the guys who got a chance 18 months ago, and the experienced guys have come back and put a bit of icing on top."We are moving in the right direction and happy with the way we´ve played in the last three or four Tests."Paine said it was also pleasing to see other players stepping up, after Smith almost single-handedly retained the Ashes for Australia with his batting heroics in his first series after suspension. For the first time in his career Smith has gone three Tests without a half-century, but Paine actually views that as a positive."We touched on at the end of the Ashes," he said."We needed other guys to stand up and can´t be reliant on Steve."Obviously Marnus (Labuschagne) has been unbelievably good, and Davey (Warner) and Joe Burns have been scoring runs."If we want to be one of the better teams in the world guys have got to stand up and we can´t be reliant on too few."We are really happy with how our batting has developed."

  24. Photo: ReutersKARACHI: Iran on Saturday expressed interest in joining the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as the $60 billion worth of Chinese-funded project enters into next phase of industrial and agriculture cooperation, reported The News.Iran's Commercial Attache to Pakistan, Morad Nemati Zargaran, who was leading a delegation which visited Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) said CPEC was essential and opened up huge opportunities for both the countries. “Iran wants to become part of this project which would surely ensure prosperity in the entire region,” Zargaran said. The Iranian envoy, according to the report, said the business communities of the two countries should meet more frequently to improve their contacts and hold exhibitions which would help in improving bilateral trade and investment.Zargaran assured his full support and cooperation to the business community for the improvement of trade activities and said steps have to be taken to deal with the barriers hindering smooth trade between the two countries. “High customs duties need to be brought down to encourage legal trade and discourage smuggling,” he said“Formal banking channel between the two countries has to be activated which is widely being demanded by the business communities of the two countries since quite some time now,” Zargaran added.Vice President KCCI Shahid Ismail said bilateral trade remains low and Pakistan and Iran must make collective efforts to explore new avenues.“It has always been KCCI’s struggle to promote bilateral trade and the chamber has a very positive approach towards improving trade ties particularly with neighbouring countries,” Ismail said.He added the bilateral trade was much less than the potential as Pakistan’s exports to Iran stood at a mere $330.2 million in 2018, while imports were around $1.247 billion.Ismail said negotiations on free trade agreement (FTA) between Islamabad and Tehran are underway. Both the countries have shared their desire of upgrading preferential trade agreement into FTA for which initial drafts have already been shared. Both the countries have already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) through which channels would be opened in the central banks of both the countries for trade transactions that would reduce the usage of dollar account for the letter of credit clearance. He also underscored the need to sort out infrastructural constraints to enhance bilateral trade via Quetta-Taftan land route.“Regular operation of ECO (Economic Cooperation Organisation) container train will lend impetus to cargo and transit facilities between the two countries,” he added.
