  1. 'Gully Boy' frontman MC Sher stole a lot of limelight from leading stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the movie. He came as Murad's mentor and stepped up as that voice of reason that turned Murad's life around for the better. © Excel Entertainment The man behind the terrific performance of rapper MC Sher was Siddhant Chaturvedi who portrayed the role with conviction. Ever since the film's release, people have spoken of him in the same breath as Ranveer and Alia, whenever someone thought of Zoya Akhtar's blockbuster musical drama 'Gully Boy'. © Excel Entertainment Since the film's release, Siddhant became a household name with his more than perfect debut, while girls simply couldn't get enough of him. With so many people wanting more of MC Sher, and others wondering about the rapper's own backstory, struggles and future after Murad's raging popularity, reports are now rife that producer Ritesh Sidhwani and Zoya Akhtar have decided to create a spin-off around MC Sher becoming an overnight sensation, which will help smoothen out all the ruffled feathers. © Excel Entertainment “The film is entirely based on Siddhant's character and traces MC Sher's journey to becoming a hero. This will also give the makers a chance to delve deeper into the hip-hop culture and you can expect many engaging rap battles,” a source was quoted as saying. © Excel Entertainment This has come as good news for hundreds of MC Sher and Siddhant Chaturvedi fans who will now get to behold the rapper's life story in a standalone movie, who played the role of a terrific mentor and an even better friend in 'Gully Boy'. We cannot wait to watch his side of the story on the big screen. What about you?
  2. Zoya Akhtar's 'Gully Boy' is undoubtedly one of the biggest hits of 2019, which turned everyone into a rapper, a skill people didn't know they had until they saw the movie. This movie also marked Ranveer Singh's debut as an epic rapper, who introduced the world to 'Asli Hip Hop'. While people can't stop praising Ranveer Singh's flawless performance in the movie, there's another guy whose inspiring story deserves to be heard and must hog the limelight. The story of Naezy aka Naved Shaikh, the real-life 'Gully Boy' on whose life Ranveer's character was supposedly based on. Instagram From being an underdog rapper on the streets of Mumbai to making it big and finding success in the world of hip hop, Naezy bares it all about his life in a 'Humans of Bombay' post and how different it was from the movie. "I was born & brought up in Kurla, an infamous area. My family was full of academics, but I was different. I had an 'adventurous' childhood–I'd spend all day with my friends doing the craziest things! I'd hustle hard to get money from anywhere possible–I'd search & sell unused things for cash! I never let my family see this side of me, but they realised what I was up to." Instagram Naezy loved writing and once he got introduced to the 'rap culture', there were fireworks. "I had to study BSc, but I used that time to focus on Hip-Hop–I had so much to say; my songs were unsaid words from dusty street corners," he said. When he recorded his first song 'Aafat', it went viral. The song was loved by people, but his family was furous as they never wanted him to pursue rapping as a career. "Eventually, I got more offers, but kept missing out because of family restrictions. Just when I thought all was lost, I recorded 'Mere Gully Mein' & everything changed. That song was what made Zoya Akhtar approach Divine & I for Gully Boy," he further added. Instagram When someone says, this movie is based on someone's life we instantly assume that everything shown in the movie is factually accurate. We fail to realise that some things are fictional, like it was in 'Gully Boy'. "But not everything in it is true–there's no 'Saifeena' & my dad doesn't have 2 wives! But it showed the audience my roots; the reality of every street rat out there. Looking back, I can't believe I'm here!" View this post on Instagram “I was born & brought up in Kurla, an infamous area. My family was full of academics, but I was different. I never let my family see this side of me, but they realised what I was up to. My mom took care of us because my dad was in Dubai. She said the only way I'd improve was if I stayed away from my friends. I changed schools & houses, but the streets never left me. I found my way back, through Hip-Hop. I loved writing, but hadn't been introduced to 'rap culture' before, so I began researching. It was like a fire burned within me! I had to study BSc, but I used that time to focus on Hip-Hop–I had so much to say; my songs were unsaid words from dusty street corners. But who'd give a 'gully boy' a break? I decided to wait for nobody & record my first song, 'Aafat' on an iPad–it went viral! People loved me! But when my family saw the video–they were furious. They'd never let me pursue rapping as a career–I recieved love & support from everyone except them. It was heartbreaking. Eventually, I got more offers, but kept missing out because of family restrictions. Just when I thought all was lost, I recorded 'Mere Gully Mein' & everything changed. That song was what made Zoya Akhtar approach Divine & I for Gully Boy. But not everything in it is true–there's no 'Saifeena' & my dad doesn't have 2 wives! But it showed the audience my roots; the reality of every street rat out there. Looking back, I can't believe I'm here! There was a time when my friends & I'd bunk school to come to the Queen's necklace & look for coins on the street to have kulfi. Today, I've performed at Wankhede & was given a hotel room overlooking the necklace! I was on top of the world! Still, in that moment of joy, I felt heartbreak like never before because I couldn't share it with my parents. All of this success is stale without their acceptance...without their love. I wish they could see how far I've come, but I won't let this break me. I'll keep trying...Apna Time Kabhi Toh Aayega!” A post shared by Humans of Bombay (@officialhumansofbombay) on Apr 1, 2019 at 6:11am PDT Although he is experiencing fame and joy, it's heartbreaking for him because he couldn't share it with his parents. "All of this success is stale without their acceptance...without their love. I wish they could see how far I've come, but I won't let this break me. I'll keep trying...Apna Time Kabhi Toh Aayega!"
  3. I feel Lilly Singh is one of the OG YouTubers and while a lot of them have become very irrelevant now, iiSuperwomanii is still giving everyone original content and that too on top of getting her own 'Late Night' show. Yes, I know she's Canadian and not Indian but she's still desi - and fully embraces that - and it's a win for us also okay, thanks. Coming back to her videos, she just released a video that could end Bollywood. Not really, but it's pretty great. So, she reimagined a few Bollywood songs as raps and changed the lyrics up to make them so relatable, it's uncanny. Starting off with 'Choli Ke Peeche', she raps about body positivity and self-love. And, that dig at Fair and Lovely just made my day. Next comes 'All Is Well' and a rap about mental health and a lot of desi problems. Obviously, this had to be there. Last song was 'Aankh Maarey' and she turned it into a Bi-Anthem and it's so beautiful to see that. And, yes she did make the 'one more remix' joke. Here's the video: As soon as it released, people coudn't stop raving about it, obviously, because it's just so great. For sure. this is insane oh my god. besides all the amazing acting, rapping, production and editing, THE MESSAGE. the underlying messages!! you're a genius @IISuperwomanII one of your best videos for sure. https://t.co/lTiu2WkVMQ — ð¼ðªð½ð¿ð²ð´ðª â¡ (@singhxstark) March 28, 2019 So original. 4. Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra starrer 'Kesari' hit the theatres on Holi yesterday, and the first 24-hours have brought in loads of good news for the actors and makers of the film. The Holi release turned out to be a huge plus for Akshay Kumar as viewership saw a steep rise as the day flourished, making 'Kesari' the highest opener of 2019 thus far, leaving behind 'Gully Boy' and 'Total Dhamaal' by a good margin. © Dharma Productions While Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starring blockbuster 'Gully Boy' acquired an opening day box office collection of Rs. 19.40 crores and Ajay Devgn multistarrer 'Total Dhamaal' bagged Rs. 16.50 crore on its opening day, 'Kesari' collected Rs. 21.50 crore on the very first day of its screening, thereby making it the highest and most successful Bollywood opener of 2019 so far. © Instagram Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter earlier to spell it all out for avid movie-goers ahead of the weekend that's teasing everyone's senses today. History stands witness to the ultimate show of daredevilry and sacrifice shown by 21 Sikh soldiers of the British Indian Army, who took up arms against 10,000 Afghan Orakzai tribesmen, in order to perform their duty. © Dharma Productions Critics and movie-goers have praised the movie and how Akshay Kumar has yet again managed to deliver a great movie, retelling a historical event that most history books had given a miss. Now, while 2018 turned out to be a highly successful and satisfactory year for Akshay with all three of his releases, 'Padman', 'Gold' and '2.0' performing really well at the box office, 2019 is also looking very promising for him with almost five other films scheduled for release. However, for now, it is 'Kesari' that has been garnering all the interest and rightly so.
  5. The revolution that 'Gully Boy' brought into the film industry goes beyond the intricacies of storytelling and film making, great casting, as well as a show of talent shouldered not only by lead actors Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, but even the supporting cast of the film which included names like Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Varma, Vijay Raaz, Amruta Subhash and Srishti Shrivastava, amongst others. © Excel Entertainment The film has been a massive hit at the box office; however commercial gains aside, 'Gully Boy' has also managed to gather a crazy and loyal fan base that is here to stay for a long time to come. From avid movie-goers to ardent hip-hop fans, 'Gully Boy' has built a strong fan following with everything it had to offer. If you also happen to be one of the many loyal fans 'Gully Boy' has succeeded to bag, there is an awesome news for you all. 6. In the list of million names who turned rappers and started singing 'Apna Time Aayega' after watching Ranveer Singh's 'Gully Boy', there's a new name that got added today. The person we're talking about is WWE star John Cena, whose latest post has sent his and Ranveer's fans in a frenzy. © Excel Entertainment "Welcome to my Instagram. These images will be posted without explanation, for your interpretation. Enjoy." This is not us. This is John Cena's Instagram bio and let's just say he's never disappointed us, neither earlier nor today. Cena shared a still from 'Gully Boy' with Ranveer Singh's image and 'Apna Time Aayega' written on it. View this post on Instagram A post shared by John Cena (@johncena) on Mar 6, 2019 at 9:35pm PST We don't think this post needs any explanation, but we sure want to know what Cena's first reaction was after watching the movie (if he has seen it, that is). Given that Cena too is known for his incredible rapping skills, we hope they get into a rap battle soon. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, 'Gully Boy' is based on Mumbai's underground rap scenario and also stars Alia Bhatt, Siddhant Chaturvedi (as MC Sher) and Vijay Varma (as Moeen Bhai).
  7. The thing that made 'Gully Boy' such a huge success is that it's a character-driven piece of cinema, where every character got its fair share of screen time, as well as importance in the storyline. Of course, all the actors gave their heart and soul to make it a success, and it happens very rarely in Bollywood. Out of those characters, MC Sher of course was able to win hearts as soon as he made his entry, but there is one more character that people remember and love, because of the sheer intensity and realism involved in its execution. The character of 'Moeen Bhai' was played by Vijay Varma with such honesty and grit, that it will be remembered by Bollywood for a very long time. Now, Vijay Varma's effortless screen presence has already made its mark, but did you know the man is just as effortless as a fashionista? Don't believe us? Here are 10 pictures that establish our claim. 1. Look at him teach us the true meaning of how to be cool in this pleated jumpsuit. 8. Ranveer Singh's 'Gully Boy' has turned everyone into a rapper, a skill people didn't know they had until they saw the movie. The latest addition in the list of 'talented yet lesser known' rappers is 'Dhadak' actor Ishaan Khatter. © Instagram While everyone is loving Murad (played by Ranveer Singh), MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi) and Safeena (Alia Bhatt) from the movie, Ishaan's favourite character is actually Moeen Bhai (played by actor Vijay Varma) and he paid a tribute to his favourite character in the most kickass style possible. © Excel Entertainment Ishaan posted a video on social media today of his slaying the Moeen style rap and wrote, "Moeen bhai bole machao toh majboori thi, kya? 9. The Indian Railways as well as Minister Piyush Goyal decided to get a bit sassy with all defaulters and people who dupe for tickets with a clever hack. 10. 'Gully Boy' is on its way to becoming one of 2019's biggest blockbuster movies, and we couldn't be more stoked for the cast and crew that has managed to pull off such a wonderful film, with its many facets and unexplored dimensions. In the Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer 'Gully Boy', director Zoya Akhtar has done an amazing job of creating a movie inspired by the life story and achievements of rappers Divine and Naezy, which also depicts the lives of upcoming hip-hop singers and rappers in Mumbai at large. However, as the film inches closer to completing a week at the box office, the supporting actors of the film have also grabbed some major limelight. So, a few hours ago, when Karan took to Instagram to share his honest opinion on 'Gully Boy' in a lengthy post, the entire film fraternity and film enthusiasts stopped and took notice. Giving words to his heartfelt feelings about the movie, Karan declares 'Gully Boy' a “masterpiece”, Zoya Akhtar a “bonafide magician”, hails the movie as a “smashing debut” for Siddhant Chaturvedi and says that 'Gully Boy' shall be a cult classic in the time to come. 11. 'Gully Boy' may have taken the box office by storm, but actually, it's the hearts of the audience that the movie seems to have captured. Given that it was one of 2019's most anticipated movies, Bollywood fans couldn't contain their excitement, and all the hype around the film ensured that fans were kept primed for the 'real deal' from the very beginning of the year. Now, with the film's release on Valentine's Day last week, the Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer has been topping every chart that there is, including its box office collection, which has already crossed the 70 crore mark with four days, and the audience cannot seem to get enough of its songs, characters, plot and what not. (c) Excel Entertainment However, if there is one thing in particular that people cannot stop gushing about after a viewing of 'Gully Boy', it is the tremendous effect the supporting cast of the film has on the entire experience. Movie-goers simply cannot stop praising the impact and dimension the supporting actors have lent to the film, heightening the movie-watching experience even further. Viewers have even picked their favourites amongst the leading supporting actors and have gone on to add how each of them carries the film forward on their shoulders, supported by their talent and stellar acting. 1. Siddhant Chaturvedi (c) Excel Entertainment MC Sher is so realistic a character on-screen, and the man behind the character is an equal marvel. Talented and a natural in front of the camera, Siddhant performs the role of the guru and confidante perfectly in the film. He inspires trust and admiration with his character and we love that he stands beside Ranveer like a pillar of strength, all the way. Um, Gully Boy, scratch that, Bollywood needs more of Siddhant Chaturvedi — Chavvi (@chavvim) February 18, 2019 Siddhant Chaturvedi is the next big thing in Bollywood! Vijay Raaz (c) Excel Entertainment The man needs no introduction, yet Raaz's new avatar in the film had us sitting on the edge of our seats the whole time. Gone was the funnyman, and here was a violent and abusive husband and father, and his constant fight against defiance almost makes you hate him, until you behold the man suppressed within the layers of a human who has long lived a handed-down life. Also worth mentioning the terrific acting skills of Vijay Raaz. Have always been a fan. Such an understated yet powerful performer. Zoya Akhtar and whoever did the casting deserves as much applause as any other department. The casting for most parts is spot on. #GullyBoy — Ranjit Nair (@ranzzit) February 18, 2019 How good was Vijay Raaz in #GullyBoy?! Absolutely loved it. From 'Kawwa biryani' to this, man has come a long way. — HK. (@HammaadKhaann) February 18, 2019 3. Amruta Subhash (c) Excel Entertainment A regular face in the Marathi film industry, Amruta nails it as Murad's mother with her feisty and loud comebacks. Initially a pawn at the hands of fate and her husband, she decides to get her own back when things get out of hand. 12. Try tossing any idea or concept towards Amul and you can trust them to blow your minds away with their creativity. Time and again they have proved why people love their creative side more than their butter. Recently, they won or should we say cried together with millions of hearts, by paying homage to the CRPF jawans martyred in the deadly Pulwama terror attack. 17. The much-awaited, extremely hyped up and super interesting 'Gully Boy' is all set to be our Valentine's Day treat, and since the movie has oversold itself and opened to rave reviews and packed houses at the Berlin Film Festival, it's natural to set our bar higher. Here are 4 things we are looking forward to witnessing in Zoya Akhtar's super ambitious movie: 1. Ranveer & Alia's Power-Packed Performances- This is the most obvious and our first and foremost reason to watch the movie. Ranveer has been very vocal about how he just couldn't resist this role and knowing that he is a closet rapper himself, this will be a good watch. Also, this has already been declared his career's best performance so far, so there's that as well. As for Alia, this actress never fails to surprise us with her powerful performance. 2. Zoya Akhtar's Brilliant Vision- Probably one of the most iconic directors this industry has witnessed. Zoya's storytelling has 'brilliance' written all over it and her personal style of including a 'slice of life' angle to it, is what makes the audience fall for her amazing narrative. 3. Platform For The Growing Rap Scene In India- India, for a while now, has been witnessing the burgeoning growth in the genre of Hip Hop and rap. This movie is a great platform to give centre stage to the wonderful voice of this particular form of music. Also, this will pave way for more similar movies, where our home-grown artists can get their due recognition. 4. The Music Is A Breath Of Fresh Air- Since the movie deals with the rap circle in India, it has also opened our up ears to a newfound sense of sound and music with this movie. It's already a big hit right now. In case you haven't watched the trailer yet, prepare yourself for some major awesomeness. The movie hits theatres on 14th February. If you are someone who is looking for a movie date this Valentine's Day, then this is your pick.
  18. When the 'Gully Boy' trailer dropped, no one had a doubt about the fate of the movie because when you combine the vision of Zoya Akhtar and the brilliance of Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, you get nothing short of perfection from it. The movie opened at the ongoing Berlin Film Festival and in a record time of just 4 minutes, all the tickets for the premiere were sold out. Needless to say, the audience cannot stop raving about this masterpiece, calling it Ranveer's finest work till date. #GullyBoy is an excellent, excellent film! 19. We all thought we had seen it all, when it comes to Ranveer Singh and statement pieces of clothing . But the thing is, he still surprises us - consistently so - and that is precisely the thing that makes him the fashion king of Bollywood. You might love what he wears, or hate it - but you sure as hell can't ignore it. If that's not the best way of making a statement, we don't know what is. Case in point: A very special outfit Ranveer wore in Berlin for the promotion of 'Gully Boy'. Not that any outfit he wears isn't 'special enough', but the one we're talking about hands down qualifies as the quirkiest outfit ever - even by 'Ranveer standards'. Before we delve deeper into why it counts as a fashion masterpiece, take a look at it. © Manish Arora When we saw it, our jaws had hit the floor as well. 'What IS that?' - was the natural response. But then, because we're more or less used to Ranveer's many sartorial eccentricities, we collected ourselves and patiently looked beyond the candyfloss hued 'magical unicorn fur'. Did you say Unicorns are not real? We thought so too till we saw this. © Manisharorafashion The jacket is a custom-made piece by the uber-talented quirkmaster Manish Arora, who had earlier designed the glow-in-the-dark wedding party outfit for Ranveer . This one here is a special creation for the movie 'Gully Boy'. © Manish Arora "Anyone who is unconventional be in fashion or music or film, they make it to success because they believe in themselves. Only then will the world believe in them. This jacket is a culmination of these ideas. It's an association with my days of struggle. It's unconventional and just like anyone who has made it in life despite the odds, much like the character Ranveer is playing in Gully Boy. The jacket symbolizes freedom, a reminder that we are rare and our own heroes" - Mr Arora wrote in an instagram post while explaining the inspiration behind the jacket. © Manish Arora The jacket contains quirky messages throughout, sewn in dramatically, like playful bursts of fairy dust in between the thick, silky fur of an unicorn running around through clouds. © Manish Arora The back of the jacket takes the cake, where it says 'Believe in yourself', along with rainbows, glitter, and two multicoloured unicorns embroidered with perfection. © Manish Arora There are 13 messages of self-belief sewn across the jacket, that owe their origin to the character of Ranveer in the movie 'Gully Boy', as well as Manish Arora's unconventional story of success. Some of the messages are "I love my life", "Dream", "Be here now", "It's a sign", and "What you seek is seeking you". 20. You know how sometimes something very absurd and unexpected happens and you're convinced you're in the weirdest timeline? Well, the Indian political parties are doing exactly that right now and I'm like 98% sure we really are in some alternate universe, and it's because of all the rap videos and memes by BJP, Congress, and AAP which are flooding the social media. We all know the elections are coming, so basically, BJP released what seems like a 'Gully Boy'-inspired rap video calling out Congress and its party head Rahul Gandhi. Parties directly targeting each other is not unusual and thanks to social media, we are all a part of it now and honestly, this year's elections will be a social media battle that will give everyone a lot of second-hand embarrassment. Coming back to the rap, it's straight up called 'Congress Se Azadi' so no one accidentally misses the point. With lyrics like 'Baaki poor desh doobe, inki naiya paar hai na' and 'akela insaan fir gaadi teri chaar kyun? Ghar me hain chaar fir room tere aath kyun?', it's hard to miss that BJP has gone all out in calling out the entire Gandhi family. 22. Last year, PM Narendra Modi was announced as the world's most followed leader across all social media platforms. In fact, his social media presence and active response to his followers' tweets and posts speaks volumes about why so many people follow him. One such video is this what I like to call 'Didi Ka Gussa', which has started doing the rounds on the internet once again, thanks to an FB page called 'Unofficial PMO India'. This video is pure gold and PM Modi's rap is even better. Can we say, PM Modi is a better rapper than 'Gully Boy' Ranveer Singh? After watching this video I am sure you will agree with me. 24. After becoming only the fourth Indian captain to win the ICC U-19 World Cup, Prithvi Shaw has established his reputation as one of the most promising young talents in the country. His exploits in the U-19 World Cup and domestic circuit fast-tracked him into the Indian team where he announced his arrival on the international circuit with a brilliant hundred on debut. His natural talent and artistry with the willow further saw him becoming a part of the Indian cricket team that toured Australia. But, while many expected young Shaw to shine Sachin Tendulkar Down Under, the Mumbai wonderkid unfortunately suffered an ankle injury that ruled him out of the Test series that was eventually won by his side in emphatic fashion. Since then, Shaw has been nursing his injury as India continues their tour of New Zealand. And, on 31st January, when his U-19 teammate Shubman Gill made his international debut in the 4th ODI at the Seddon Park, Shaw was seen taking inspiration from Ranveer Singh's viral rap song 'Apna Time Ayega' from his upcoming flick 'Gully Boy'. SHAW (@prithvishaw) on Jan 30, 2019 at 8:36am PST The 19-year-old took to Instagram and shared a photo of himself, holding the iconic MRF willow. Using the verse of Ranveer's song, Shaw captioned the image: "Aapna time ayega...Injury se fit hoke...Mein Aur Run Banayega...Apna Time Ayega". Making his debut in 2018 in the first Test of the home series against West Indies, Shaw made an immediate impact with a commendable hundred. He, then, followed it up with 103 runs in the second Test. In the two Tests he played, Shaw amassed 237 runs to eventually bag the 'Man of the Series' award. He was then prepping up for a stern test in Australia, but his injury ruled him out of the Test series. Since then, the young gun has been nursing his injury and recovering well, but he's still not fit enough to feature for India. While no comeback date has been set for him yet, Shaw recently told India TV that he would be fit for the twelfth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he will be seen donning Delhi Capitals' jersey.
  25. Baba Sehgal is one of the most talented people out there but he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. I'm offended for him. Who else can come up with so many great rhymes all the time? Whose Twitter account is just in rhymes? Everyone is raving about 'Gully Boy' and Ranveer Singh right now but we're going to celebrate the OG Baba Sehgal because let's be real, even Gully Boy ain't got nothing on him. Fun fact, 'Apna Time Aayega' is about Ranveer waiting to reach Baba Sehgal's level. Okay all jokes aside, we know Baba Sehgal's pretty outrageous and it's not just limited to his songs; his Twitter account is genuinely hilarious with so many unexpected rhymes and it's just so much fun to read. So, I thought I would get everyone to enjoy and appreciate this man's tweets with me. Here are the best ones: Here's a message for the weekend.
