ADMIN posted a blog entry in FDF Online NewsRecently, a lot of fanfare and hype has been created by the media promoting chocolate milk as a fantastic post-workout drink or as a sports drink. Most of these articles have been done with flashy headlines like it induces superior muscle gains or is a very healthy food option for people engaging in exercise and so on. These headlines made the McDonalds hitting gym bros proudly sharing these articles on their social media, flashing that they knew it before the media even had a hint of it. © YouTube The Chocolate Study Before you too read the same and rush to your nearest supermarket or start hitting McD's for their chocolate shakes post-workout, let's find out the root of these flashy headlines and the reality behind the entire thing. All these headlines could be linked back to a meta-analysis and a systematic review published in the European Journal Of Clinical Nutrition. In these studies, the chocolate milk studies and their effect on performance factors such as time to exhaustion, rates of perceived exertion, heart rate and muscle fatigue were looked at. The actual results did not quite match up to the fanfare created by the media hype reporting it. The researchers found that chocolate milk had no significant beneficial effects on performance or recovery. In words of the research paper, "The meta-analysis revealed that CM consumption had no effect on TTE, RPE, HR, serum lactate, and CK (P > 0.05) compared to placebo or other sports drinks". Meaning, chocolate milk (CM) is not superior to a placebo or any other sports drink when comparing parameters like time to exhaustion, rates of perceived exertion, heart rates, or fatigue factors. In subgroup analysis though, it showed that chocolate milk proved to be slightly superior to a placebo or a sports drink. But this did not have any significant effect on the overall findings of the study. Breaking Down The 'Chocolate Milk' All in all, chocolate milk did not live up to the hype in the studies as they were reported in the media. Now, let us also look at it from a closer angle and try to understand that if chocolate milk had any benefits, what are its ingredients that are providing these recovery or performance benefits. Chocolate milk is a combination of protein, carbs, and fats. Protein can help in muscle protein synthesis and also reduce muscle protein breakdown. Carbs and fats can be used to refuel the body as they are energy sources. The benefits thus come down to all the macronutrients being present in the drink. © YouTube You can get these same ingredients from other drinks like protein shakes and/or combination of whole meals with nutrient-dense foods in it. These other options like a protein shake or whole nutrient-dense meals can be lower in calories as well as more filling than just a chocolate milk. If you are trying to lose fat, the latter option will aid you in the process as you are consuming lesser calories by simply cutting out a drink laden with sugar which has little to no nutrients in it. This brings us to the conclusion that we should not believe everything that the media flashes or hypes with regards to nutrition and even though it may be true, it is always beneficial to be a critical thinker and verify the facts before believing it 100%.
