  1. A British man who was HIV-Positive has become the second adult in the world to be cleared of the AIDS virus. Christened as “the London patient”, he got a second chance at a healthy life after receiving a bone marrow transplant from an HIV resistant donor. If you are wondering how that might be possible, then listen up. The donor, who is not related to the patient has a genetic mutation that is known as “CCR5 delta 32” which grants resistance to HIV virus! Imagine the possibilities this mutation has given rise to. © Twitter The London patient contracted HIV in 2003 and it was because of Ravindra Gupta, a professor and an HIV biologist, who was then working at University College London, and was co-leading a team of doctors treating the man, that this discovery could be made. It has almost been three years since the London patient received the bone marrow transplant and over 18 months since he has come off antiretroviral drugs, and recent, highly sensitive tests have still not shown any trace of an HIV infection relapse. However, though Professor Gupta told the media that, "There is no virus there that we can measure. We can't detect anything", he also added that his patient was "functionally cured" and "in remission", but reminded everyone that "it's too early to say he's cured." © theconversation However, scientists are taking this case as proof that they will be able to end AIDS one day. The world met its first functionally cured HIV patient in 2007, named Timothy Brown. Brown had received a similar treatment in Germany and came to be known as the Berlin patient. Brown has since moved to the US and according to experts, is still HIV-free. These discoveries are making us more hopeful of a future where fatal diseases such as AIDS and cancer will finally get cured.
  2. The Prestigious Indian Army has a simple motto for training its cadets: 'we first break you, then make you'. Boys go through gruelling weeks of physical hardship and come out as men fit enough to serve the nation at times of war. Once soldiers are inducted, the Army ensures they are prepared (mentally & physically) to perform at their absolute best, even in extreme circumstances. However, the Army demands certain prerequisites before you can join. The First Physical Test You Need To Clear Is The 1600 M Run. Note: This test is conducted for non-commission entries for the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force and equivalent ranks in Police & Paramilitary forces. © Quora You will get 5 minutes and 45 seconds to cover 1600 M, one second more and you fail. Boys completing the run in 5 minutes 30-45 seconds are taken in Group 2 and allotted 48 marks. For those who complete it in 5 minutes and 30 seconds or less, are taken in Group 1 and allotted 60 marks. The Biggest Mistake Aspirants preparing for this test run for hours trying to increase their stamina. This is an absolute waste of time. There is a simple principle called 'specificity' in exercise science- if you want to get good at 'something' like long jump, do that 'thing' instead of ballet dancing. Passing a 1600 meter run in minimum time is not merely about stamina, it also requires speed and strength. Thus, you need to train accordingly and enhance all those three capabilities. The following training plan will help you to cover 1600M in minimum time and secure you in Group 1 with 60 marks: Workout 1: Run 1600 M In Minimum Time Measure 400M distance and cover its 4 rounds with minimum time. If on the first day it takes you 7 minutes to cover this distance, aim for 6 minutes and 45 seconds the next day and gradually, come down to 5 minutes and 30 seconds and under. Workout 2: 100 M Sprints Maximum Laps Measure 100M distance and sprint as fast as possible. Then walk back slowly, settling your breath and sprint again. Repeat this continuously for 10 minutes. Your goal should be to cover maximum laps in 10 minutes. If on the first day you could do 5 laps in 10 minutes, aim for 6 the next time. Try beating your previous best with each training session. © Quora Workout 3: Full Body High-Intensity Training This workout is for strengthening your muscles to run 1600 M as fast as possible. Start with 10 Burpees, followed by 10 Jump Squats, followed by 10 Box Jumps and at last, 10 Body Weight Lunges (each leg). Rest 5 minutes after this and repeat this cycles four more times. Needless to say, you are not supposed to perform all these workouts in one day itself, as it will simply burn you out. Here is how you have to arrange your training. Day 1 Run 1600 M in minimum time Day 2 Run 100 M sprints maximum laps Day 3 Rest Day 4 Run 1600 M in minimum time Day 5 Full body high-intensity training Day 6 Rest Day 7 Repeat Cycle Important: Rest is a crucial part of this training for boosting recovery. Perform all workouts only once per day for the initial four weeks. From the fifth week onwards, perform all workouts twice per day (morning & evening). Best of luck! 6. Skin care is important. Period. Nobody likes a sudden acne breakout just before a big meeting or a date. But the good news is: you can avoid it completely, nevertheless. How? By adopting a terrific (but basic) skin care ritual, that happens to be just a 5-step guide. After all, who doesn't love to maintain clear skin in life? And the truth is, it's not a herculean task either. Neither do you require very expensive products nor a lot of products; just basic ones that are suitable for your skin type. To break things down for you, here's a simple guide to maintaining clear skin all year-round: Step 1: Cleanse © Reuters Pictures The first thing that every guy should do in the morning (after brushing, of course), is clean his face. But remember, just a few splashes of water will not be enough to remove all the dirt and excess oil, you'll need something more. Instead of picking up a bath soap for the deed, invest in a face cleanser based on your skin type. Use daily and remember to pat your face dry (not rub). Step 2: Shaving Care © Amazon India How you shave will define how your skin really feels. Razor burns can cause irritation and over time, even lead to an acne breakout. Use the razor carefully and glide it smoothly by using the right shaving cream/gel. In addition, invest in a good post-shave balm (not any random moisturiser) to smooth your skin out and prevent any shaving-induced breakouts. Buy our suggestion here! Step 3: Exfoliate First off, let's establish: exfoliation is not only for women. Men too, need to get rid of dead skin cells regularly, to keep their skin in its best health. Start with exfoliating at least once a week and depending upon how your skin is reacting, turn to doing it every two days. Let's make this easier for you. To begin with, keep every Sunday as your day for exfoliating your skin with a scrub, to open your pores and remove the trapped dirt and oil. You can try the Ustraa Face Scrub. And once you're done exfoliating, hydrate your skin with a charcoal face mask. By doing this, you will not only get rid of the excess grime, dead skin skills, but also leave yourself with a much healthier-looking and clearer skin. Step 4: Moisturise © Amazon India Now that your skin is clean, it's time to hydrate it with a moisturiser suitable for your skin type. Choose a gel-based moisturiser, that won't make your skin feel greasy. Brownie points if it also involves SPF abilities (an SPF of 20 or above), to give yourself all-round sun protection. Buy our suggestion here! Step 5: Hydrate Your Body Orally. Hydrating your skin with a moisturiser isn't enough, you need to keep your oral intake of water high too. Drink at least 2 liters of water through the day! It will clean your skin cells from within, to give clear, flawless skin on the outside! Final words: All said and done, it's always best to consult a dermatologist too, in case you have any skin problems or irritation. An expert will give you the best advice!
  7. The 2018 FIFA World Cup Final is just around the corner as mighty Croatia take on European giants, France in Moscow. The Croatians are featuring at this stage of the tournament for the first time in their history, but the French have been here before as they are looking to reclaim the World Title they won back in 1998. But between these teams and the World title lies a 90-min battle and 22-players who will be highly motivated to get their hands on the 7-kg gold trophy. Source: Reuters While the French are the clear favourites here, Croatia is considered the dark horse to lift the title, and with their motivation expected to be sky high, we can't be certain of who shines. One player in particular who would want to break a jinx at World Cup finals is Daniel Subasic. He would be more motivated than anyone else to ensure he does not add to an unwanted record and prove the Monaco Theory a real thing. What is the Monaco Theory? Here are the hard facts that are laid out on the table for all to see. The World Cup Final of 2006, 2010 and 2014 all featured a Monaco goalkeeper who ended up on the losing side. Fabien Barthez for France in 2006, Maarten Stekelenburg for the Netherlands in 2010 and Sergio Romero in 2014 for Argentina all ended up on the losing side at the World Cup Final. To make matters interesting, there is the presence of Daniel Subasic who is playing his club football at Monaco and is in the World Cup Final with Croatia as they take on France. Source: Reuters Will Subasic break the jinx of the Monaco goalkeeper conundrum to lift the title with Croatia? Or will the Monaco goalkeeper theory reach another level and continue the unwanted jinx, this time on Croatia?

  9. If there is one thing that Diljit Dosanjh will never give up for anything in the world, it is his turban. He calls the turban his 'identity' and his 'emotion'. The man rose to fame in Bollywood with 'Udta Punjab'. His raw expressions and innocence impressed everyone. What makes him extraordinary is the way he connects with his fans and considers them his family. He doesn't project a different picture of himself, he believes in showing his true self to the world. While many actors forget their true identity and roots, he, on the other hand, has always been close to it. Think we are going overboard? Well, we do have the proof right here. SOORMA ððð¥ THIS FRIDAY ð¥ A post shared by Diljit Dosanjh (@diljitdosanjh) on Jul 8, 2018 at 10:33pm PDT Diljit is currently gearing up for his upcoming film 'Soorma'. When asked why is he being so choosy about the projects he is picking in B-town, he replied by saying, “I don't do many films in Bollywood because nothing substantial has been offered to me, I get offers but I feel even if I don't play this role someone else will, it won't make a difference. Even now my most favourite directors from Bollywood have offered me films which I cannot do because they want me to do it without the turban and that's not possible. Turban is my identity, it's my emotion.” Isn't it amazing to see how he has always stayed so true to his identity, despite gaining fame? While most actors would have given up anything to work with their favourite director, he, on the other hand, decided to go his way. Diljit's upcoming film 'Soorma' is an amazing tale on Indian Hockey player Sandeep Singh, whose story is something that defines strength, faith, courage and the passion to achieve the impossible. The trailer has blown everyone away, and you will not believe it when we tell you that he didn't want to do this biopic before. Talking about it he said, “I was reluctant because I never played hockey in my life. But I was convinced because of the story. I don't think we have ever heard a story like this in India. A man who was in a wheelchair, he fought back became a captain and made a world record. I mean, what kind of willpower one requires to do such a heroic thing? I don't think a man like Sandeep will ever be born again. I am proud to play him onscreen.” © SonyPictures “I never played a sport in my life. I always had an interest in music, so I never thought I can do a sports biopic. When an actor pretends to play the guitar, I feel very bad because I know he is acting. Similarly, I was skeptical that will I look good playing hockey because I have never done that. But I had to say yes because the living legend Sandeep taught me hockey and everything became easy,” he added. When he was asked how difficult it was to get into the skin of a real-life character he said, “I don't understand method acting and all, because I am not an actor. If I exaggerate and say that I have worked very hard, it was very difficult for me and all that, and then it will sound fake. In this film, the story is the hero. Sandeep in real life had to go through so much of struggle which you and I can never imagine, so he is the hero, not me. If the film touches your heart than I succeed.” Isn't he one of the most down-to-earth actors you have ever come across? We wish there were more actors like him in the industry!

  16. Lionel Messi delivered another masterful performance as Barcelona sailed past Athletic Bilbao 2-0 on Sunday to take an 11-point lead over nearest rivals Atletico Madrid in La Liga. Photo: AFP MADRID: Lionel Messi delivered another masterful performance as Barcelona sailed past Athletic Bilbao 2-0 on Sunday to take an 11-point lead over nearest rivals Atletico Madrid in La Liga. After putting Chelsea to the sword in the Champions League midweek, Messi scored for the sixth game in a row against Athletic at the Camp Nou to propel Barca closer to the domestic title. "Every day he discovers something new, something different, he´s very aware of what he has to do, what the team needs from him at each moment," Barca coach Erneste Valverde said of Messi, the Spanish league´s leading scorer this season with 25 goals. "Many times it seems that the coach has to teach the players, but what the coach really does is learn alongside them as things go on. We hope to keep on learning together." Not to be outdone by his greatest rival, Cristiano Ronaldo then hit four goals as Real Madrid downed Girona 6-3 to move into third place, albeit still 15 points off Barcelona. A dominant start from Barca yielded the opening goal after just eight minutes as Messi found Jordi Alba out on the left, his pull-back neatly side-footed into the far corner by Paco Alcacer, filling in for the suspended Luis Suarez. The hosts looked a constant threat early on and Philippe Coutinho was denied a second when he rattled the woodwork, while Ousmane Dembele should have done much better with just Kepa Arrizabalaga to beat. But the Athletic goalkeeper was powerless to keep out a crunching low drive from Messi on the half hour, the Argentine taking a touch to control a pass from Dembele before lashing home. Coutinho, the club´s record signing, struck the woodwork for a second time as he tried to lob Kepa after latching onto a clever lofted pass from Paulinho, who then smacked a curling shot of his own against the upright. Record of invincibility nears Barca extended their unbeaten La Liga run to 36 matches dating back to last season, drawing to within two games of the record set Real Sociedad between 1979 and 1980. "I would love to (break the record) but why carry on talking about it if we can lose, win or draw the next game," Valverde said. "We´re not going to tempt fate. The next match in Seville will be a very difficult trip." Real Madrid reclaimed third place from Valencia when Ronaldo took his La Liga goals tally this season to 22 with four in a 6-3 victory over Girona at the Bernabeu. Ronaldo has now scored 21 goals in all competitions in 13 games since the turn of the year. "I hope that he can catch Messi in La Liga (he is three goals behind), it´s important for him and for us," said Real coach Zinedine Zidane. "When Cristiano plays well, the team plays well." The Portuguese star opened the scoring with a deflection after 11 minutes, adding his second off the crossbar three minutes after the break when the two sides had been locked 1-1. Ronaldo teed up Lucas Vazquez on the hour mark before completing his hat-trick four minutes later and adding a fourth in stoppage time. Welsh star Gareth Bale was also on the scoresheet four minutes from time. Second-placed Atletico effectively surrendered their hopes of overhauling Barca at the top, as two late goals from 20-year-old Turkey striker Enes Unal handed Villarreal a 2-1 victory over Diego Simeone´s side. Antoine Griezmann converted a first-half penalty after he was impeded by Jaume Costa, before Koke hit the post. But Unal headed in an 82nd-minute equaliser for the hosts and turned home a stoppage-time winner as Villarreal climbed up to fifth. Sevilla crashed to a 2-1 league defeat by Leganes just days after pulling off the surprise elimination of Manchester United in the Champions League. The loss means Sevilla are increasingly unlikely to qualify for the Champions League through La Liga this season. Meanwhile, Real Sociedad sacked coach Eusebio Sacristan on Sunday with the team in 15th place with Imanol Alguacil installed until the end of the season.
  17. To be successful in life, one needs to have focus and one cannot achieve that until and unless one knows what to subtract and what to add to achieve those goals. One needs to reduce distractions and build healthy habits to have an unshakable grasp on their dreams. Here are some of those additions and subtractions you can include in your life to clear your path to success. 1. Your idea of success changes with time © Thinkstock/Getty Images When you are 18, you may think getting admission into a good college is the height of success and when you are 25, you feel like getting rich is the ultimate high. In your 40's, you may see stability as the metric of success. So, the lesson is that success changes with time and it is relative in nature. There are certain parameters by which you should define your overall success. Success is living your purpose Success finding and understanding love Success is being grateful for what you have and finding a way to give to others. 2. 'Just one more' is never a solution If you are giving yourself one more time before letting go of that bad habit of yours, then you are consciously fooling yourself and no one else. That 'one more' eventually adds up and ultimately ruins your life. Stop saying one more time to fool yourself and instead stay on the right track. 3. Saying NO often is the discipline you need to practice © Iz Quotes Saying no is an art as well as a necessity. If you do not say no to things, you should be doing so right now so that you don't lose any time working on things that are important to your life. Start prioritizing and stick to your goals. 4. Stop following the saying 'fake it till you make it' 'Fake it till you make it' works in very rare cases. Most of the time, vulnerabilities will make you strong and capable. Expose yourself to yourself! Being authentic is a better metric for success. 5. You know you are not working as hard as you can You know you need to wake up early but you are still go to bed late! That is the kind of attitude I am talking about. You know you can complete that project today but still, you do not put in that extra effort to finish it off. Stop delaying things for no reason and remember that time is limited for everyone. 6. You are not special © YouTube Stop living in a false world of your own thinking that you are very special. No, you are not! To be special, you need to be working as hard as you can to reach places others have not. No one is born special in this world. It is what they do that makes them special and nothing else. If you want to know more about this subject then read 'The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck' written by Mark Manson. 7. Honesty makes life simpler Honesty makes communication effective and your life simpler. The fewer lies you tell, the less you need to remember, period. Honesty makes you authentic and makes you who you are. 8. You are always building something You are always building something. It could be a business, a relationship, a house. If you are not building anything that means you are stagnant and not growing. Remember things that don't grow die, much like people who may seem alive from the outside but are dead inside. 9. The day you discover how you can bring value to the world. Your contribution to the world is all that matters and there is no better feeling in this world than giving. The day you find out what your gift is or what your talent is then it should become your life's purpose to share it with the world to make it a better place. 10. Be nice for no reason © Quotes Blog Being nice for no reason is a rare quality and not everybody has it. Being kind to everyone makes you live a happy life. Your little gestures, like a smile or a helping hand can make someone's day and it won't cost you anything but will make you feel more alive. 11. Doing what you say you are doing is a super-power The perfect example for this would be Elon Musk. We all know this billionaire entrepreneur who is changing this world for the better, one step at a time. He does what he thinks needs to be done and what he promises. Become a man of your words. 12. Replace your bad habits with good ones You need to subtract your bad habits and add good ones to your to-do list to make it more focused. Keep your list clean and only keep things that will allow you to have laser focus on your goal and remove the distractions around you.
  18. RAWALPINDI: Security forces on Tuesday evening cleared the portion of the damaged track near Magoli railway station in the province's Dera Murad Jamali area, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The track was damaged earlier in the day and around a four-foot portion was damaged in the cracker explosion. ISPR said all passengers were shifted from the incident site under security provided by the Frontier Corps. The statement added that the passengers of the affected train were provided the required administrative assistance during shifting from the train and subsequent movement towards Jacobabad. =
  19. PM said this while addressing the inauguration ceremony of an LNG project here, which will provide gas to Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa SADIQABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Saturday challenged his political opponents to an electoral contest in the 2018 elections, and said the polls will make it clear as to what party emerges victorious. He said this while addressing the inauguration ceremony of an LNG project here, which will provide gas to Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The prime minister also said that the power crisis in the country has been largely contained, and every household has access to gas now. He criticised previous governments for failing to carry out development work, and said that the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has been the one active in the development. ?PML-N constructed a 100-km motorway in four years, something which even developed nations are incapable of doing,? the prime minister said.
  20. Reza Pahlavi ? the last heir apparent to the defunct throne of the Imperial State of Iran and the current head of the exiled House of Pahlavi ? speaks during an interview with Reuters in Washington, US, January 3, 2018. REUTERS/Joshua Roberts WASHINGTON: The Trump administration should encourage US technology companies to provide communication services to Iranians as they protest their country?s clerical rulers, Reza Pahlavi ? the last heir to the Iranian monarchy ? said. In an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, Pahlavi also criticized the Trump administration?s ban on travel to the United States by most Iranians, calling it ?ridiculous?. Anti-government protests have gripped Iran for nearly a week in the most sustained challenge to the Islamic Republic?s clerical elite in almost a decade. Pahlavi has lived in exile for nearly four decades since his father ? the US-backed Shah ? was overthrown in the 1979 Revolution. The opposition to Iran?s clerical government is atomized, with no clear recognized leader. But some demonstrators have in recent days chanted slogans in favour of Reza Shah ? Pahlavi?s grandfather ? breaking a longstanding taboo. Pahlavi said he wants to see Iranians ?determine their own fate out of their own free will?, and praised US President Donald Trump and members of his cabinet for speaking in support of Iranian protesters. But he said they also should take steps to ensure that Iranians have access to communication and social media tools, which they have used to share videos and messages documenting protests and clashes with security forces. Iran ? which bars the use of major social media platforms ? also has restricted access to the Telegram messaging app, and Iranian users in recent days have reported major hurdles in accessing the internet. ?We need more than lip service. We need to see concrete actions,? Pahlavi said. ?This has to be immediate... As we speak, the regime is attempting yet again to try to shut down whatever it is, whether it?s Instagram or Telegram.? There is a precedent for this type of US intervention. In 2009, amid mass protests over a disputed election, an Obama administration official asked Twitter executives to delay scheduled maintenance so Iranians could continue to use the service to communicate. Technology experts have documented numerous examples of commercial services being denied to Iranians, often because of concerns about running afoul of US sanctions. Activists have urged tech companies to loosen their Iran policies, but say the Trump administration could expand exemptions to make clear that some services are allowed. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a news briefing on Tuesday that the United States wants to see Iranians have access to social media and other tools. But when asked if Google was ?over-interpreting? US sanctions on Iran by blocking access to one of its services there, Nauert said she had ?no idea?. Asked if the State Department is urging tech companies to do more to ensure access for Iranians, a State Department spokeswoman did not answer directly but said US support for the free flow of information to Iranians ?is a key element of the President?s new US strategy for Iran?. Exemptions to sanctions The Obama administration approved exemptions to US sanctions that allowed for providing chat, email, social networking, photo sharing, web browsing, blogging, and other personal communication services. Twitter and messaging service Signal did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Facebook and Google declined to comment. ?The policies of these companies are not really clear,? Amir Rashidi ? an internet security researcher at New York-based non-governmental organization (NGO) Center for Human Rights in Iran ? said. Pahlavi critiqued the Trump administration?s decision to ban nearly all Iranian travellers and immigrants from the US as part of a broader travel ban targeting several mostly Muslim countries. ?Iranian diplomats still can travel (here) but innocent Iranians, who, in fact, work and have built this country are barred from coming,? said Pahlavi, who lives in the United States. ?Why? Because they?re under the so-called ban. That?s ridiculous.? A State Department spokeswoman said US support for the Iranian people ?is a fundamentally separate issue? from the travel ban.
  21. A worker tapes a message in support of the release of the upcoming Bollywood film "Padmavati" on its poster at a cinema hall in Kolkata, India, November 28, 2017. REUTERS/Rupak De Chowdhuri/Files MUMBAI: India?s censors cleared on Saturday the controversial, Viacom Inc-backed film Padmavati that looks into the relationship of a Hindu queen and a Muslim ruler, after suggesting some modifications. The Bollywood film ? which was slated to be released on December 1 ? was indefinitely postponed by a studio run by a partnership of Viacom and Network 18 owned by Mumbai?s Reliance Industries. That followed a row over its historical content, in states such as Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Members of hardline Hindu fringe groups ? as well as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ? had criticized Padmavati, accusing its director of distorting history by showing Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji as the ?lover? of Queen Padmavati, belonging to the Rajput Hindu warrior clan. ?This was an unprecedented and tough situation,? Prasoon Joshi ? the chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) ? said in an email. Joshi said he was ?glad that following a balanced approach, we resolved the task at hand in a pragmatic and positive manner?. The board asked that the name of the film be changed to Padmavat to reflect that the source material was an epic poem of the same name and not from actual historical events, Joshi said. He added that the producers and director had been asked to run a disclaimer saying the movie does not ?claim historical accuracy?, and that they were ?completely in agreement? with the suggestions. Viacom18 Motion Pictures ? the studio behind the movie ? did not respond to a request for comment. It earlier said the film captured ?Rajput valour, dignity and tradition in all its glory?. The film stars popular actress Deepika Padukone, who was the target of Rajput groups who were against its release. A BJP politician was ordered to apologize publicly by his party after he offered a reward for anyone who beheaded Padukone for her portrayal of Queen Padmavati. Despite the suggested modifications by a special committee, a group ? that says it represents the Rajputs ? vowed Saturday to keep protesting against the movie. ?We had given a whole list of objections regarding the movie,? Ajit Singh ? the president of Rajput Karni Sena ? told Reuters. ?The decision has been taken in haste and only a few cuts to the movie will not do justice to the history and legend of the person. "We will continue our protests.?
  22. MADRID: Barcelona took a huge step towards regaining the La Liga title as goals from Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Aleix Vidal beat bitter rivals Real Madrid 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday to open up a 14-point lead over the European champions. In a recurring theme of this season, Madrid were made to pay for Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema missing first-half chances as Barca took control after half-time. Suarez rounded off a flowing counter-attack to open the scoring before Messi blasted home a penalty after Madrid defender Dani Carvajal was sent-off for punching the ball off the goal line. And Messi was the creator as Vidal rubbed salt into Real's wounds deep into stoppage time. The victory extends Barca's unbeaten run to 25 games in all competitions as they moved nine points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid and exacted revenge for a 5-1 thrashing on aggregate in the Spanish Super Cup at the hands of Real in August. Madrid do still have a game in hand over Barca to marginally reduce the gap at the top, but their efforts in the new year are now likely to be more focused on becoming the first side to win three consecutive Champions League titles in over 40 years. Despite the clash between the Spanish capital's and Catalonia's two giants taking place just two days after three parties favouring independence for the prosperous region from Spain retained an absolute majority in the Catalan parliament, there was little attention paid to politics inside the ground once the action got underway. Madrid fans unfurled a huge banner proclaiming it to be a "white Christmas" after they claimed a club record five trophies in 2017. However, it is Barca who will enjoy the upcoming winter break more after a second-half display which showed the turning of the tide their way since August has been no fluke. It could have been very different for the hosts if Cristino Ronaldo had buried a huge opportunity when he completely miskicked just 10 minutes in. Barca didn't threaten at all until the half-hour mark when Messi finally found some room in a congested midfield to pick out Paulinho's late run and the Brazilian´s acrobatic effort was matched by a flying save from Keylor Navas. Seconds later it was Marc-Andre ter Stegen to demonstrate why he has been one of the keys to Barca's success this season by getting an outstretched toe to turn Ronaldo´s fiercely struck shot behind. Benzema was inches away from giving Real a half-time lead as he headed against the post two minutes before the break. However, Barca came out a different side in the second period to almost certainly put the title out of Madrid´s reach. Nine minutes after the break Sergio Busquets's calm opened up the Madrid midfield as he fed Ivan Rakitic and Sergi Roberto eventually crossed to Suarez to apply the finishing touch. Suarez was spared the embarrassment of missing two huge chances in an incredible goal mouth scramble that led to Barca´s second. Navas saved Suarez's first effort before he fired against the post with the goal at his mercy, but Paulinho´s follow-up was punched off the line by Dani Carvajal. The Spanish international accepted his punishment of a red card and Messi dispatched the resulting penalty into the top corner to kill the game as a contest. Ter Stegen produced more heroics to ensure there was no Real fightback as he again denied Ronaldo. And Barca put the seal of a stunning victory in stoppage time when Vidal drove Messi´s cut-back towards goal and the ball squeezed in under Navas.
  23. File photo/Reuters GENEVA: The UN refugee agency on Friday accused Australia of abandoning hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers on Papua New Guinea?s Manus Island and said it must take responsibility for the mess it created with its ?offshore processing? system. About 800 refugees are still in a precarious situation on Manus Island, having been forcibly removed from a holding camp last month when Australia decided to close it, UNHCR spokeswoman Cecile Pouilly told a regular UN briefing in Geneva. ?We are talking here about people who have suffered tremendously, extreme trauma, and are now feeling so insecure in the places where they are staying. There are many victims of torture, people who have been deeply traumatized, having no idea what is going to happen next to them,? she said. ?In light of the continued perilous situation on Papua New Guinea?s Manus Island for refugees and asylum seekers abandoned by Australia, UNHCR has called again this week on the Australian government to live up to its responsibility and urgently find humane and appropriate solutions.? Conditions in the camp, and another on the tiny Pacific island of Nauru, have been widely criticized by the United Nations and human rights groups. The two camps have been cornerstones of Australia?s contentious immigration policy under which it refuses to allow asylum-seekers arriving by boat to reach its shores. The policy, aimed at deterring people from making a perilous sea voyage to Australia, has bipartisan political support. The closure of the Manus Island camp, criticized by the United Nations as ?shocking?, caused chaos, with the men refusing to leave the compound for fear of being attacked by Manus island residents. Pouilly said that in the past four weeks, there had been at least five security incidents, including an attempt by three people armed with machetes and an axe to force their way into a site where 150 refugees and asylum seekers have been accommodated since the Australian facility closed. Pouilly said that although Papua New Guinea now had to deal with the situation, the buck should stop with Australia. ?What we clearly are saying is that it?s Australia?s responsibility in the first place,? she said. ?Australia is the country that created the situation by putting in place this offshore processing facility. So what we are asking is for Australia to find solutions for these people.?
  24. Manchester City beat Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford to go 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League on Sunday. City?s victory marked the first time a team have won 14 consecutive English top-flight games in the same season and ended United?s run of 40 home games unbeaten in all competitions. Pep Guardiola?s side took the lead in the 43rd minute through David Silva but poor defending allowed United to hit back immediately with Marcus Rashford grabbing an equaliser before the break. Nicolas Otamendi volleyed in the winner on the half-turn nine minutes into the second half. City now have 46 points from 16 games, with United staying second on 35, and look like the title is theirs to lose even if Guardiola was not about to get carried away. ?We won because we were better. We are still in December, if we have 11 points (lead) when we play the second derby in April then maybe I will tell you that we have the title,? said the Spaniard.
  25. LAHORE: Minister of Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique said on Sunday criticised Asif Ali Zardari saying that the PPP co-chairman speaks of development in the country despite having failed to dispose of garbage in Karachi. Addressing a rally here, Rafique said it would cause a huge loss if he disclosed everything, adding, "It has been 70 years [since the formation of Pakistan] and now we all have collective responsibility to take forth the country." The minister did not forget to respond to his party's two main opponents - Asif Ali Zardari and Imran Khan - at the rally. "Asif Ali Zardari, who failed to get trash heaps disposed of in Karachi, speaks of development in the country, while Imran Khan, who boasted of making a 'Naya Pakistan', is so coward that he moves to hill stations fearing dengue fever," he said. Rafique noted the incumbent government has only five months left in completion of its term. "If the government was not allowed to complete its term, then no future regime would be able to do so." He also stressed the need to stop religious extremism in the country. "Pakistan needs an active parliament, brave military and honest bureaucracy," the minister said.
