Former batting opener for the Indian cricket team, Virender Sehwag is well-known for his bold statements about the game, its players, and his own compatriots who played before or after him for the national side. Recently, the cricketing legend spoke about the Men in Blue’s ‘yo-yo test’ fitness criteria that has become the very reason why many talented players of the country failed to make it to the main roster and missed the opportunity to represent their country at an international stage. “I want to tell you one thing, here we are talking about yo-yo Test, Hardik Pandya doesn’t have issues with running, he has issues with workload because of his bowling. However, Ashwin and (Varun) Chakravarthy, on the other hand, haven’t cleared the yo-yo Test, that’s why they aren’t here,” Sehwag told CrizBuzz. “But I won’t agree with all of this, if these criteria existed before, then the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, and Sourav Ganguly wouldn’t have passed it. I have never seen them pass the beep test. They always fell short of the 12.5 mark,” he added. And while Sehwag is not against the players having high levels of fitness, he questions the bar set for the Indian players that often leads to cutting some very talented and skilled cricketers off the squad-list. “Skill is important, today if you are playing a fit team but don’t have the skills, then you would ultimately end up losing. Play them based on their skills, slowly you can improve their fitness over time but if is yo-yo criteria are applied straight away, then the talks are different. If a player can field and bowl 10 overs, that should be enough, we shouldn’t be concerned about the other things,” Sehwag said. Back in September 2020, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was having a televised conversation with Team India captain Virat Kohli and ended up asking about the yo-yo test criteria for himself and his colleagues. Kohli replied: “I’m the one who goes to run first and this is the condition that if I fail, I am also not available for selection. It is important to set that culture and it will lead to an improvement in overall fitness levels,” which suggests the new mentality with which Team India functions as far as fitness is concerned. The extremely strict passing standards for those who wish to make it to the squad have shown incredible results in the recent series both in Australia and at home against a touring England side. Photo:File ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader Syed Khursheed Shah said on Wednesday that judiciary and institutions hold different criteria and principles of justice for Sindh and Punjab. Shah said that there have been no arrests of Sharif family, neither their names have been put in the Exit Control List despite serious graft cases against them, adding that former Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon voluntarily presented himself before the court but he is not getting justice. Referring to the National Accountability Court cases against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader and his family, the leader of the opposition said that the cases are a test for the judiciary. "This is a test for the Supreme Court, from now on dual standards of justice won?t continue," he said. Sharjeel Memon challenges arrest in accountability court Memon said his arrest warrants weren?t issued on October 23, the day he was taken into custody, hence his detention should be declared illegal Memon was arrested by NAB on October 23, after hours of being holed up in court premises. He was taken into custody as he left the court. Memon was shifted to NAB headquarters Sindh after being escorted from the court. "The accused persons are charged for embezzlement of Rs. 5,766,479,766 purportedly paid to seven advertising agencies for awareness campaigns between 2013 and 2015," said a press release by NAB. US sets criteria for visa applicants from six Muslim nations

An international passenger arrives at Washington Dulles International Airport after the US Supreme Court granted parts of the Trump administration's emergency request to put its travel ban into effect later in the week pending further judicial review. File photo: Reuters Visa applicants from six Muslim-majority countries must have a close family relationship to a US individual or formal ties to a US entity to be admitted to the United States under guidance distributed by the US State Department on Wednesday. The guidance defined a close familial relationship as being a parent, spouse, child, adult son or daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law or sibling, including step siblings and other step family relations, according to a copy of a cable distributed to all US diplomatic posts and seen by Reuters. Narrowed travel ban could sow confusion in US and abroad, experts say The Supreme Court agreed to decide the legality of Trump order in its next term, which begins in October The cable, first reported by the Associated Press, said close family "does not include grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-laws and sisters-in-law, fiancés, and any other 'extended' family members." It also specified that any relationship with a US entity "must be formal, documented, and formed in the ordinary course, rather than for the purpose of evading the E.O.," a reference to US President Donald Trump's March 6 executive order temporarily barring most US travel by citizens of six nations. The cable provides advice to US consular officers on how to interpret Monday's Supreme Court ruling that allowed parts of the executive order, which had been blocked by the courts, to be implemented while the highest US court considers the matter.
