  1. Hollywood star Will Smith shocked everyone when he slapped Chris Rock at the recently-held 94th Academy Awards. Chris joked about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, appearing like 'GI Jane 2' before presenting an award at the Oscars 2022. The Gemini Star became upset and stormed the stage, slapping Chris and warning him not to use his wife's name in public. The incident is still the most talked-about and will remain in the public consciousness for a long time. Meanwhile, actor-comedian Vir Das has slammed a troll who said he 'deserves to be' slapped like Chris Rock. While Chris had not reacted against Will, Vir stated that if someone attempted to retaliate against him like that, he would return the slap. View this post on Instagram The two had a Twitter exchange, on Sunday, after Vir posted a photo of his messy hair with the caption, "There's mutiny in the hair". There’s mutiny the the hair. pic.twitter.com/2qt8pjRPlS — Vir Das (@thevirdas) April 3, 2022 Reacting to the photo, a Twitter user commented, "Someone needs to do a Will Smith on this one. He would totally deserve it too". Someone needs to do a will Smith on this one. He would totally deserve it too — Baron Harkonnen (@baron_uncle) April 3, 2022 Vir responded to the troll's post by inviting him to his next show. He tweeted, "You’re welcome to buy a front row ticket and try at my next show. Just know I slap back. Also once you’ve spent that front row money, your wife will probably slap you for ruining her evening. Cheers". You’re welcome to buy a front row ticket and try at my next show. 2. Unless you are living under a rock, you would know about the Russian-Ukrainian crisis that has shaken up the world right now. Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to invade Ukraine is being condemned by several global leaders and spectators. Among them are some creative minds who are expressing their disapproval through a new and rather controversial social media trend. © iStock It’s the poem title ‘Sorry That I Was Not Your Mother’ which Indian comedian Vir Das too jumped on the bandwagon and penned a desi version of the poem and the people on the internet find it part hilarious and part problematic. © Instagram/Vir Das In the poem, he gives the gist of how desi children are raised and what would happen if Putin too was raised by an “Indian mum”. Read it here. View this post on Instagram For those who do not know, actress, activist and amateur Twitter poet, AnnaLynne McCord started this social media trend when she recited a poem in a video post addressing Putin. The poem suggests that the Russian-Ukrainian war wouldn’t have happened if the President was raised better. Dear Mister President Vladimir Putin… pic.twitter.com/LbDFBHVWJf — AnnaLynne McCord (@IAMannalynnemcc) February 24, 2022 This is problematic because this puts the blame on Putin’s mother for his beliefs and actions, which is what society tends to do—hold women responsible for men’s actions! It received a lot of flak from people on the internet with some saying it was done in a bad taste, while others said it was unfair and unacceptable to not only drag his mother into it but also blame her upbringing for the conflict. © Reuters However, it became a social media trend for those who were amused to slam Russia’s invasion into Ukraine. Vir Das’s take on the trend too received mixed reactions from his followers. Here is what they said. © Instagram/Vir Das © Instagram/Vir Das While a war between two countries is not funny and making memes or joke on the subject is highly insensitive, this satire by Vir Das sounds like it’s more targeted on desi parenting than Putin. Doesn’t it? View the full article
  3. Days after stand-up comedian and actor Vir Das made headlines for his monologue on ‘Two Indias’, delivered at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., he has finally broken his silence and said that he won’t stop doing his job. He was trolled heavily for insulting the country in a foreign land and was even termed as an ‘anti-national’. In the nearly seven-minute-long video, Vir Das is heard talking about the duality of the country. He mentions topical issues India is grappling with including the battle against COVID-19. Vir talks about how Bollywood divides the nation on Twitter and ironically unites the audience in the theatres. He mentions how women are worshipped in the day and gang-raped at night. Vir is heard talking about the crackdown against comedians, lack of information about the PM CARES fund and does not forget to mention the farmers' protests. He also mentions that some might find it a gigantic joke but it’s not. Here’s the video: View this post on Instagram In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Vir said, “I think laughter is a celebration. When laughter and applause fill up a room, that’s a moment of pride. Any Indian who has a sense of humour, understands satire, or watches my entire video, knows that’s what happened in that room.” He went on to add, “I can’t expect what happens when I put out a piece of content — it’s jokes, it’s not in my hands,” Das stated. “I think a comedian puts out satire, it has the good of the country and the bad of the country, ending in the good of country…that’s something you should want to come together in.” He also said that he has made his county laugh at his jokes for so many years and he won’t stop doing his job. “I have made my country laugh for 10 years now. I have devoted my life to writing about my country. We are here at the Emmys because I wrote a love letter to my country. As long as I am able to do my comedy, I want to keep writing love letters to my country,” Das said. View this post on InstagramAfter his interview gained traction, people started to troll him brutally once again. One of the social media users went on to say that he should go to jail for giving this interview. Another said he should leave the country if he is not comfortable living here. Vir’s supporters gave it back to haters saying that he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation and he said nothing but the truth. 4. In a world where digital media makes up most of our lives, it’s easier to just hide behind the laptop screens and share your meanest opinions without the fear of being caught. This is increasingly becoming the sad reality of the world we are living in. Just the day before yesterday, Vir Das’ video started to go viral wherein he delivered a monologue as part of his recent performance at the John F Kennedy Centre in Washington DC. He uploaded a video on Instagram, titled ‘I Come From Two Indias’. View this post on Instagram It was only a matter of hours after he uploaded the video that he started trending on Twitter with many social media users calling him out for insulting the country. He was termed a ‘traitor’ and people didn’t approve of his act. In the video, he is heard talking about the duality of the country. He mentions topical issues India is grappling with including the battle against COVID-19. Vir talks about how Bollywood divides the nation on Twitter and ironically unites the audience in the theatres. He mentions how women are worshipped in the day and gang-raped at night. Vir is also heard talking about the crackdown against comedians, lack of information about the PM CARES fund and does not forget to mention the farmers' protests. He also mentions that some might find it a gigantic joke but it’s not. People were offended by his monologue and a complaint was registered against the comedian. Not just Vir Das, we have found out five more Indian comedians who have landed in trouble for their acts in the past. 1. Munawar Faruqui View this post on Instagram On January 1, 2021, standup comedian Munawar Faruqui was arrested for a show in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He was booked under various IPC sections including 295A, which relates to “deliberate and malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings.” Town Inspector of Tukaganj Police Station Kamlesh Sharma had told The Indian Express that they had no evidence against Faruqui directly and that he had been booked as an organizer. “There’s no evidence against him for insulting Hindu deities or Union Minister Amit Shah,” he said. The comedian has been a target of Hindutva groups for the past year. Last month, two shows featuring Faruqui were canceled after members of Bajrang Dal traveled from Gujarat to Mumbai and threatened the venue owners. They feel he has mocked Lord Rama in his previous videos and hence, they want to get all of his shows canceled. 2. Kunal KamraKunal Kamra has always been in the news for his controversial tweets. He faced contempt charges over a series of tweets criticizing the Supreme Court for granting TV anchor Arnab Goswami interim bail. Here’s one of the tweets that got him in trouble: © Twitter/Kunal Kamra 3. Agrima Joshua View this post on Instagram Mumbai-based stand-up comedian Agrima Joshua landed in big trouble after she joked about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in a standup gig. She even received rape and death threats because of a harmless joke. Swara Bhasker came out in support of her and also shared the video of the comedian’s act. Here’s the video: View this post on Instagram 4. Kiku Sharda View this post on Instagram Comedy Nights With Kapil actor Kiku Sharda was arrested for mimicking Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh on his show. He was arrested for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the self-styled godman’s followers. Kiku was booked on December 31 under section 295 A of the Indian Penal Code (outraging religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious belief). Kiku Sharda was sent to 14-day judicial custody after police produced him before the court of Nandita Kaushik, Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kaithal. But, he was granted bail in this case. 5. Tanmay Bhat View this post on Instagram Tanmay Bhat got in major trouble after he used an app called Face Swap, which allows users to “borrow” another person’s face, for creating two videos titled Sachin Vs Lata #Civilwar that agitated followers of both the singer and the cricketer. Police complaints were filed against Bhat by Maharashtra's ruling BJP and also Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. View the full article

He wrote, “The video is a satire about the duality of two very separate India's that do different things. Like any nation has light and dark, good and evil within it. None of this is a secret. The video appeals for us to never forget that we are great. To never stop focusing on what makes us great. "It ends in a gigantic patriotic round of applause for a country we all love, believe in and are proud of. That there is more to our country than the headlines, a deep beauty. 7. Making comedy comes with a great risk of hurting people’s sentiments or offending someone whether you intended to or not. Most stand-up comedians have faced the wrath of trolls, even got arrested for telling a joke on stage. Indian comic Vir Das is also no stranger to controversies and trolls over his sketches. © Instagram/Vir Das His latest one that has caused an uproar is a monologue that he released titled Two Indias. The six-minute video was a part of his show in Washington DC with an Indian audience jam-packed inside the John F Kennedy Centre. He posted the video on his social media account and captioned it, “TWO INDIAS - Vir Das Something I wrote on the morning of the show. At the end, after many laughs, we filmed it....and made some noise for a country we love, and are proud of. © Instagram/Vir Das Watch the video here. View this post on Instagram The monologue is a satire on the ironic polarity of India and its people. One particular line from the video which went viral as soon as it was posted, seems to have not sat well with people, which goes, “I come from an India where we worship women during the day and gang-rape them during the night”. For this, he has been trolled by some people on the internet. © Instagram/Vir Das Now, actress Kangana Ranaut has reacted to the video and called him a ‘criminal’. She posted stories on her Instagram account saying action should be taken against him. She wrote, “When you generalise all Indian men as gang-rapists it gives rise and encouragement to racism and bullying against Indians all over the world...after Bengal Famine Churchill famously said, ‘These Indians breed like rabbits they are bound to die like this...’ he blamed Indians’ *** drive/fertility for the death of millions because of hunger... Such creative work targeting an entire race is soft terrorism... strict actions must be taken against such criminals @virdas.” © Instagram/Kangana Ranaut Vir Das issued a clarification about the video on Tuesday in a Twitter post asking people to “not be fooled by edited snippets.” © Instagram/Vir Das He wrote, “The video is a satire about the duality of two very separate Indias that do different things. 8. The Primetime Emmys are often criticized for only recognizing white people in general and not actors or artists from other countries. Well, despite the criticism, this time around the nominees surprisingly included a few Indian celebrities. Among them was Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the Best Performance by an Actor category for his role in Serious Men that had been directed by Sudhir Mishra. © Instagram/Nawazuddin Disney+ Hotstar crime web series Aarya directed by Ram Madhvani and Vir Das have also been nominated for this year's Emmys. The actor and stand-up comedian was nominated for his Netflix stand-up comedy special, Vir Das: For India. © Netflix It was surely a welcome change and he will now definitely attend the Emmys ceremony. Now, while most actors who attend such prestigious award shows end up wearing really costly and exquisite designer clothes, it seems Vir Das is not going to follow suit. Instead, the artist, in an Instagram post, asked new Indian designers to style him in their clothes. In what appears to be an attempt to keep things simple while also promoting Indian designers who are still trying to make a name for themselves, Vir's post was captioned, "New Designers...listen up. Correct address: makevirlookpresentable@weirdasscomedy.com" View this post on Instagram The post clearly won the hearts of many fans with people flooding the comments sections. © Instagram - Vir Das A user wrote, "This is why you're different than others. Respect man" © Instagram - Vir Das While another one said, "That’s how the legends do it! so inspiring." © Instagram - Vir Das "Thissss. Thisss is why you are the best." said another user. © Instagram - Vir Das A user named Shehla said, "Aren’t you the absolute best, Vir? More power to you." This was followed by a whole lot of other messages of support from fans and celebrities who feel that unlike a lot of other celebrities, Vir Das stands for the common people. Cheers to you, Vir! 9. The time when Indian talent is not just going global but is also earning accolades globally is finally here. In a record-breaking streak, the Emmy Awards nominations are out and India has three super entries in the race. Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has secured a nomination in the best performance by an actor category for his Netflix movie Serious Men. The movie was based on a novel written by Manu Joseph. He will be competing with David Tennant (Des), Roy Nik ( for Israeli series Normali ) and with Christian Tappan of Colombia (El Robo del Siglo). Disney+ Hotstar series Aarya starring the beautiful Sushmita Sen has made it to the final four of the best drama series category and will be competing with Chile's El Presidente, Israel's Tehran and UK’s There She Goes. The third feather in our cap is ace comedian and producer Vir Das, who made Vir Das: For India with Netflix and earned an Emmy nomination in the comedy segment. Um...I think I just got nominated at the #InternationalEmmyAwards @TheWeirdass@iemmys #VirDasForIndia I...uh...holy shit. 10. Comedian Vir Das recently offended the transgender community and was criticized for his joke that made fun of gender pronouns and spoke inappropriately about transgender persons. In the fifth episode of his #TenonTen series, he spoke about it and received heavy backlash. In the episode, he said, “I am not because Transpeople have the courage to discard an organ if it isn't working properly. For them... or a man who used to be a woman and the kid is like... it just means that your kids will have a longer chapter in school when they learn pronouns.” He did accept his mistake and owned up to the fact that he completely messed it up. In the statement issued online, he thanked a person from the queer community for ‘calling him in’, and wrote, “I did a joke on the new ten on ten-episode that my friends in the Trans community felt hurt by. I see why. My intent at the moment was to say Trans people have the courage the Govt never ever could and it was set up wrong and uninformed.” “I messed up. It had the opposite effect and trivialized your struggle. Articulating my intent effectively is my responsibility, not yours. I got that joke wrong. Plain and simple. No buts,” he added. View this post on Instagram “Sometimes (a lot) people are upset because the joke really worked, sometimes because the joke doesn’t. My audience understands comedy, they can take a joke. So, when they talk to me, I listen. I’d like to be an artist who unabashedly deliberately uncomfortably pushes the line every single day, and never stops acknowledging his audience, always using their voice as his guide. A conversation, where the focus is on them, always,” he stated. “Amaan, thank you for your message. Know that I see you, I heard you, your struggle. I’m in this conversation, I’ll always listen and you will always inform my comedy,” he wrote. He then posted a screenshot of the message Amaan had sent to him. He had written, “Hey Vir. I’ve been a big fan of your comedy and your work (Excluding Mastizade lmao) for a long time now. I’m a queer individual who identifies as non-binary. I see your reaction to the calling out of your mistakes and I feel like someone has to call you in, instead.” They added, “When you feel like you’re being attacked, it’s very easy to get defensive. And reactionary. You of all people know punching up is how comedy works, and yet you chose to punch down, if only as a setup. I hope you understand. – A slightly hurt fan, Amaan.” View this post on Instagram Vir also shared the screenshot of his response to Amaan that read, “Amaan I hope it's alright that I am replying to you. You’re correct about the joke, and I’m so sorry it made you feel hurt. I am going to put a statement out, but waiting till everyone calms down so they know it's thought out and genuine. If you know my work, you know the intent is never ever to hurt. Give it a minute and I will definitely respond.” People have appreciated his gesture and lauded him for his courage. © Twitter © Twitter © Twitter © Twitter We live in the 21st century where people should be more inclusive of people's individualities and their sexuality too. Though we are far from where we want to be in this regard, it's heartening to see state governments taking initiatives to give transgenders some recognition and it would go a long way if we comedians and artists encouraged the same. Nonetheless, what do you have to say about the entire fiasco? Let us know in the comments section below. View the full article
  11. When you have the right people supporting you, the number of supporters you have doesn’t really matter. Well, this was true for Indian Archer Atanu Das, who defeated two-time Olympic champion, Oh Jin Hyek of South Korea, to proceed further into the elimination rounds. © World Archery Given the pandemic and everything, Japan’s Olympic stadiums are virtually without any audience. During their match, Oh Jin Hyek had quite a few people supporting him. Mainly the South Korean support staff and a few other athletes. © World Archery Atanu Das, on the other hand, had just his wife, Deepika Kumari supporting him. Deepika made headlines when she stormed her way into the quarterfinals, after a number of exhilarating elimination matches. Unfortunately, earlier today, she was knocked out of the running in the Women’s Individual Quarterfinal. © World Archery Upon defeating Hyek in his recent elimination match, Atanu credited the win to his wife, Deepika, for cheering him on, all by herself from the stands. She was the only supporter, he had. He was quoted, saying, “I was hearing her all the time. She was pushing me: ‘believe in yourself’, ‘you can do it’, ‘just stay calm and handle the situation.’ I am privileged to have my wife in this competition. She is a great support and motivation for me, so I really did my best in the match today.” © World Archery The two first met at the Tata Academy in Jamshedpur, in 2008, where they were batchmates. However, due to differences in languages and different training routines, they did not cross each other’s path. © World Archery During the 2016 Rio Olympics & the 2017 World Championships in Mexico City, they started getting closer to each other. It was after India’s disastrous showing at the World Championships in 2017 that they grew even closer, when they supported each other through some rough times, and eventually fell in love. They had decided to tie the knot after the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. However, because the Olympics were postponed indefinitely, they decided to go ahead with their wedding in June. © Instagram/theatanudas On the professional front, Atanu is having a blast at the Tokyo Olympics and has upset a number of favourites. 12. The internet is a powerful tool and anything that goes up there has a way of staying there. Even if you delete the origin, the ghost of its traces remain there for people to dig up anytime. Having a name and a place in the eyes of the world also means that your words have a more powerful impact on the general public than an average Joe. Indian comedians and the controversies around them have been going on forever because a lot of ‘jokes’ made by them have not gone down well with people and authorities in this country. The latest person to be called out and be cancelled is comedian-actor Vir Das. He tweeted a joke on gender pronouns and deleted it soon after a lot of backlash came his way. © Twitter We are in the day and age where conversations around more than two genders are being highly encouraged and a lot of people are opening up to the idea of understanding genders and accepting each other with love. Keeping that issue in mind, his joke was taken in a bad taste and a lot of people tried explaining why it was hurtful for a non-binary person and was also transphobic in nature. 13. Vir Das has been on the top of his game in entertaining us with his on-point comic timing. 14. Recently, comedian Munawar Faruqui along with four others were arrested for allegedly insulting the religious sentiments of Hindus. However, a woman who attended the show took to Instagram saying that the comedian didn’t make any derogatory remarks and the police officer also said that there were no videos showing him making the remarks. The four others who were arrested included -Edwin Anthony, Prakhar Vyas, Priyam Vyas, and Nalin Yadav. This came after Eklavya Singh Gaur, the son of a BJP MLA Malini Laxman Gaur, filed a police complaint against them for passing derogatory comments about Hindu Gods and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the show. Also, the local court rejected their bail pleas and sent them directly to judicial custody. He was allegedly also beaten and thrashed for his comments. Here he’s trying to logically, calmly present his case but our systems now just want to brutally silence every voice… They don’t want to hear, they don’t want to even argue — they want to simply erase every shred of individual thought, every iota of reason.” Vir Das also took to Twitter in support of the comedian. Not because comedians are performing it, but because people need to laugh. Harder you try, the more you're going to be laughed at, now, and by history. Anyone who has ever tried to control humour, now has a category of jokes devoted to them. — Vir Das (@thevirdas) January 3, 2021 Faruqui’s lawyer Anshuman Shrivastava also expressed that an FIR had been registered with a political motive and also said that constitutional provisions of freedom of speech defend comedians. The new series shows the journey of Hasmukh Sudiya (Vir Das), a man from Saharanpur who wants to be comedy's biggest star. The only problem lies in his crippling creative blocks. The show will unravel all the mysteries. Featuring Das alongside Ranvir Shorey and Manoj Pahwa, the series has got the people talking on Twitter. Before you see why people are recommending the show, hereâs a look at the trailer: People who have watched it are recommending this show as the next binge-watch series and are appreciating Vir Das and Ranvir Shorey for their brilliant performances. Compelling dark narrative. @thevirdas does a marvellous job immersing totally into the role. â Sanjeev Chhabra (@chhabs63) April 19, 2020Talking about the show, Vir Das had earlier said, Hasmukh is purely a fictional tale. But every fictional story is founded in some wild imagination. As the writer, thatâs what I have applied here. One can never imagine looking at Amol Palekar on screen and say that he can have a dark side. His on-screen characters are so affable and endearing. Hasmukh is similar.â Since many people have already recommended it, I will give it a shot and watch it tonight. What about you? View the full article

  22. Vir Das just made his debut standup on the YouTube channel of late night host Conan O’Brien and let’s just say, it was a roaring success. He starts by taunting the Americans with the joke that hurts the most. Drawing a crazy parallel with Donald Trump and arranged marriages in India, he tells the American audience how Trump is their arranged marriage. Das imagines a utopian world where one could update religion like an app. Just that Android users would be clueless. He gets it right when he says America’s biggest achievement is breakfast. Watch the video below for a feel-good Wednesday evening: Vir Das’ show ‘Abroad Understanding’ was aired on Netflix on 25th April and is the first original Indian production to do so.
