  1. Apple just released iOS 13.2 for the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro which brings with it the recently announced Deep Fusion camera feature. It is Apple's version of computational photography which is a new image processing system that works behind the scenes to improve your images in certain conditions. Apple described the feature in the patch notes as “iOS 13.2 introduces Deep Fusion, an advanced image processing system that uses the A13 Bionic Neural Engine to capture images with dramatically better texture, detail, and reduced noise in lower light…” Both the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro can take advantage of this feature and it works a little differently from Night Mode. The new Night Mode on the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro can be turned on or off manually and has a dedicated mode. It can also kick in automatically when the phone detects low light in your frame. Deep Fusion, on the other hand, does not have a dedicated mode in the camera app and works behind the scenes. Having said that, the Deep Fusion mode does not work in the ultra-wide mode so if you want to use this feature, you need to use the primary wide lens or the telephoto sensor. It will also not work if you have the “Photos Capture Outside the Frame” feature turned on or when taking burst images. © MensXP The Deep Fusion feature will shoot nine images and before you even press the shutter button it has already taken four. After pressing the shutter button, it takes one image with long exposure and then the Neural Engine combines the images with long and short exposures to give you the best picture possible. It selects all the pixels in the image and reduces noise in the final outcome. Here are some images shared by Apple as examples: © Apple The Deep Fusion feature is exclusive to the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro and here are the settings you need to make sure the feature works. 1. Update your iPhone 11 or 11 Pro to iOS 13.2 2. Head to Settings > Camera > and turn off 'Capture Outside the Frame' feature. 3. Only use the wide or the telephoto sensor for Deep Fusion (1x or 2x Mode in the camera app) 4. Deep Fusion will now work in the background when you take pictures. View the full article
  2. The Indian Army is an epitome of true valour and righteousness, wherever it's needed. They're almost invincible yet dignified, ferocious and mighty, as well as compassionate. And we only believe these things because we always read about the great work they are doing, while protecting our borders. Recently, the Indian army marched towards another great feat by rescuing a pregnant woman , who was stuck in bad snow to deliver her babies. On the 8th of February, a villager from the same village as the pregnant woman called the company commander of the Thana Panar Camp at Bandipur and asked for help to take his wife Gulshana Begum to the hospital there. Due to Jammu & Kashmir's heavy snowfall, the man couldn't take his wife, since the roads were all blocked and the temperature fell to about minus seven degrees Celsius. The situation was so grave that the woman had to be rushed to the hospital and she couldn't waste any time. © Twitter Upon hearing about the situation at hand, the soldiers of Bandipur National Rifles reached the woman's house, braving bad road conditions and heavy snowfall. They carried her out on a stretcher for about 2.5 kms, before putting her in an army ambulance. © Twitter The men had already spoken to the required doctors before they even reached the hospital in Bandipur, just so there wouldn't be any time wasted and the woman could have a safe and healthy delivery. Fortunately, upon reaching the hospital on time and after some check-ups, it was confirmed the woman would be having twins. If it wasn't for the army's presence in the nick of time, she wouldn't have been able to even make it to the nearest hospital. © Twitter Indian Army as an organisation has been taken for granted beyond measure time and again, especially in Jammu and Kashmir where they are vigilant day and night about terrorist activities. The locals aren't very fond of the army and they definitely have unpleasant feelings towards them. But more often than not, the army goes out of its way to help the local, sizeable population in any way they can and they recognise the importance of an emergency and lack of help in some regions of J&K. That's why they're always there, fighting every cause. Here's to the Indian Army for always lending a helping hand to people when they need them. We're sure Gulshana Begum's twins will have something to thank the Indian Army about. Who knows they might join the ranks someday!
  3. Amazon has started removing a wide array of products from its website in India after the country's new e-commerce policy kicks in from today. A lot of exclusive products and brands have disappeared from the marketplace since the company has no option, but to comply with the new norms. In December, the Indian Government modified foreign direct investment (FDI) rules for the e-commerce sector, and this has highly disrupted the sales model of Amazon and Flipkart. To start with, marketplaces can no longer sell products exclusively on their platform. So, every brand that was earlier closely associated with the company, has been removed from the platform. © Reuters The new investment rules bar online retailers from selling products via vendors in which they have an equity interest. Numerous products from sellers like Cloudtail are no longer available on the website since Amazon has an equity stake in the seller. Even products from Shopper's Stop have been removed because Amazon owns five per cent stake in the retail label. Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart have tried to lobby against the new rules, but to no avail. In fact, Amazon's own line of Echo speakers has been taken off the shelf. Amazon had written to the Indian Government asking for a four-month extension to comply with the new rules, a company spokesperson said. But, there has no update on the proposal's consideration from the authorities. © Reuters Amazon has warned of widespread disruption due to the new policy and according to Reuters, the policy could "have undesirable impacts on the continued growth of e-commerce in India." Flipkart said that it was "disappointed that the government has decided to implement the regulation changes at such haste," but said it was committed to complying with the new rules. © Nikkei Asian Review The new policy comes amid intense lobbying by India's small and medium scale enterprises who have been most hit due to the marketplaces. They accuse the platforms of stockpiling goods at wholesale rates and then offering deep discounts to grow sales. The Confederation of All India Traders, which says it represents more than 70 million local retailers, warned the government against granting an extension on the enforcement of the new policy. Direct changes on Flipkart's website remain unclear right now, but we're sure a lot of exclusive apparel labels are going to disappear soon. The policy has received a mixed response since smaller traders are happy with the speed bump. Nationalists believe foreign marketplaces were playing around FDI rules to get a foothold, and in return damaging the country's existing merchants. Update: Amazon has reached out to confirm that Echo speakers and a few other products are now back on the website, and available for purchase.

  8. A blizzard hits central London as temperatures remain below freezing. -AFP PARIS: Countries across Europe shut schools and rushed to shelter homeless people on Wednesday as a deadly blast of Siberian weather dubbed the "Beast from the East" kept the mercury far below zero. The death toll rose to at least 46 since Friday as a 75-year-old Dutchman went out to skate in the western village of Hank, only for the ice to crack beneath his feet. Three children and two adults also had to be rescued in similar incidents in the skating-mad Netherlands. The victims of the brutal cold also include 18 people killed in Poland, six in the Czech Republic, five in Lithuania, four each in France and Slovakia, two each in Italy, Serbia and Romania and one in Slovenia. Homeless people account for many of the dead, and cities across Europe have been racing to open emergency shelters to protect people sleeping rough. In Germany, the national homeless association urged shelters to open during the day and not just at night. "You can die of cold during the day too," its chief Werena Rosenke warned. Authorities are also urging people to look out for elderly relatives and neighbours after a French woman in her nineties was found frozen to death outside her retirement home. In Paris, some 50 regional lawmakers were to spend Wednesday night on the streets to protest the "denial of dignity" suffered by those without roofs over their heads. And in the northern port of Calais, authorities were launching emergency plans to shelter migrants who camp out near the coast hoping to stow away on trucks bound for Britain. Schools were shut across Kosovo, western Bosnia and much of Albania, as well as in parts of Britain, Italy and Portugal. Temperatures again plunged below -20 Celsius overnight in numerous parts of Europe - even hitting -36C in Glattalp, 1,850 metres above sea level in the Swiss mountains. Ahead of a predicted thaw towards the end of the week, both Belgium and Switzerland marked their coldest nights of the winter so far. And in the usually balmy south of France, residents in Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz were heading out with skis to zoom down the snowy streets of the beach resorts. Bread-hoarding in Ireland Europe's cold snap comes as the Arctic experiences record-high temperatures, prompting scientists to ask if global warming may be playing a role in turning things upside down. Dubbed the "Siberian bear" by the Dutch and the "snow cannon" by Swedes, the icy blast has played havoc with transport networks. People walk with umbrellas down a snow-covered road near boats docked in Palavas-les-Flots, in the south of France. -AFP1 In Ireland, anxious residents were hoarding bread and milk as they braced for Thursday's arrival of a storm expected to bring the heaviest snowfall in decades. "It's fair to say the people of Ferrybank and Slieverue are taking the #Beastfromtheeast serious," said one Twitter post alongside a picture of empty supermarket shelves. The National Emergency Coordination Committee has issued a red alert, ordering everyone in the provinces of Munster and Leinster to stay indoors from 4pm Thursday until noon Friday. And Dublin's travellers were already facing major disruptions, with Ryanair cancelling all flights in and out of the capital for the rest of the day. 'Coldest job in Austria' Kosovo announced restrictions on electricity usage lasting between one and three hours, due to a surge in power consumption mirrored across Europe as people turn up the thermostat. Even professionals are feeling the chill. In Amstetten in northwest Austria which is hosting international championships for ice stock - a sport similar to curling - organisers moved the opening ceremony inside due to the cold. Austrians were reserving particular sympathy for Ludwig Rasser and Norbert Daxbacher, two employees at the Sonnblick weather station 3,109 metres above sea level. Handed the honour of having the "coldest job in Austria" by the Oesterreich tabloid, Rasser and Daxbacher are charged with heading out to measure the temperature three times a day. The process takes an hour in temperatures of -32C - which "with the windchill feels like -60," Rasser said.
  9. If Priyanka Chopra's recent fashion stints have taught us anything, it is that no matter how many great fashion choices you make in life, controversies and memes will always overshadow them. She wore a kickass ubercool Ralph Lauren beige trench-coat gown, but all that people could see was a cup of 'masala chai'. © Twitter She met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Germany, and Twitter ended up having a gala time bae-watching the two and dolling out their opinion like fashion critics for showing off her legs. And things are no different for her even now, as she recently found herself being trolled for her photograph in Assam tourism calendar. It's very rare for a celebrity to come under the radar of critics for a brand they are the ambassadors for. But, for Hollywood's resident bae Priyanka Chopra, that 'rare' thing happens more often than anything else in her life. Honestly, as the brand ambassador, she seems to have gained more controversies than any brownie points for the state. © Twitter After finding herself in the controversy for being the brand ambassador of Nirav Modi's jewellery brand, Priyanka Chopra was recently targeted on social media for her choice of clothes for the calendar of Assam Tourism. Her frock did not go down too well with people, as they think it wasn't 'sober enough'. In fact, the opposition Congress leaders had problem with her opting for a frock instead of the traditional 'mekhela chador'. This is the calendar we are talking about. © Twitter According to a report in DNA, Boko MLA Nandita Das and MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi raised this issue stating that the calendar pictures are not sober and that frock is not an Assamese attire. In fact, her cleavage was an issue for people too. But, there's nothing to worry Priyanka Chopra because your fans are standing in solidarity with you. Didn't you noticed she also wore saree for their ad ? Get a life you haters pic.twitter.com/NGhYpRjMJw — PRANAV (@pranav1490) February 20, 2018 She dressed in sarees & traditional wear for all the promotional materials. One picture in a dress and yall losers lose ur shit. I know @aweassam bcz of Priyanka Chopra because of her ur state gets attention worldwide. Also personally I don't feel anything bad about dress.Grow up! pic.twitter.com/7nlB3528tC — VISMINI (@yasiru_vismini) February 20, 2018 OK agreed please explain why ur profile picture is in suit rather than a traditional dress. First change ur self before complaining about others — Prasanth P Bhat (@prasubhat) February 21, 2018 Common.. Grow up.. Assam would have been much rich and progressive if we use our time in more innovation n constructive works. Time to change urself first — Himaxi Gohain (@himaxi_gohain) February 19, 2018 Unfortunate that a party which claims to be progressive .. which till recently had a woman as its chief is now making a big deal about Priyanka Chopra' satire for Assam ad ... — pallavi ghosh (@_pallavighosh) February 21, 2018 @priyankachopra : Proud of what you are doing. Neckline controversy in Assam tourism advert has been created for no reason and by people with shallow thinking ... reflects their archaic mindset! You go girl! — Ryality (@bharatryali) February 21, 2018 It's sad for people to fight over a dress worn in a tourism calendar and shift their focus entirely from the places itself. I mean, I don't remember the last time I visited any place looking at the traditional dress of that region. Honestly, I would go and try a Hanbok in South Korea, but I wouldn't go there just to wear it. Let us know about your thoughts, guys!
  10. The Roadster and "Starman" are somewhere out there in the galaxy, floating in the eternal darkness of space. You can still catch a glimpse of it via livestream before it sinks into deep space. Robotic telescopes will attempt to capture the last images of Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster and SpaceX's dummy "Starman" before they travel into the depths of outer space. The Roadster has a built-in camera to document and record its orbiting of the Earth and travel to Mars, but the livestream on YouTube was pulled days ago. SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk's last post regarding the Roadster was on Feb. 8. © The Virtual Telescope Project After it was launched by the Falcon Heavy's powerful boost, the Roadster drifted into space and orbited the Sun. It exceeded the Mars orbit and continued to traverse the asteroid belt. NASA has officially added the Roadster to its Artificial Objects Catalog and continues to keep tabs on the vehicle. Barring it becoming sentient and returning to Earth or crashing into something, the Roadster will likely live out its days in orbit around the sun. Elon Musk stated in his tweet that his personal red Tesla Roadster with a dummy in a space suit called “Starman” will travel through deep space for more than a billion years. The car is supposed to reference the song of the same name, that of “Starman,” played by David Bowie. © Reuters Dr Hanno Rein and colleagues, ran a computer simulation 240 times to understand how the Tesla's orbit would evolve over the course of 3.5 million years. "We did not know what to expect because the other near-Earth objects we see in space are asteroids and typically come from further out in the Solar System. In this case, it's the reverse. We know the object comes from Earth, so the question is where it will go from here," Dr Rein, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, told BBC News. There's very little chance of the Tesla hitting other asteroids, but over time, the vehicle's appearance might change "dramatically" as it's peppered by very tiny micrometeorites. 11. Contrary to our last observation about Ranveer Singh, looks like he's nowhere close to being a 'seedha-saadha' human in any way. In his justification, let's just say, this could be his version of pure and pious, you see. Because really, while on a normal day, he would have opted for a dinosaur-print three-piece to wear to an award function (with a T-Rex on the crotch), but he took a rather ordinary route this time around. 'His' kinda ordinary, obviously. Point being, to step out as his crazy-self for Umang 2018, we spotted the actor in an all-velvet three-piece suit, purple in appearance and paired with tri-coloured dress shoes. And while his sunnies (worn in the night) were in-sync with the colour palette, his outfit's resemblance to 'The Joker' was the quickest to come to our notice. © Viral Bhayani For starters, here's visual evidence of Singh's almost-true resemblance with 'The Joker' here: © Warner Bros While you say that the vibe of both these ensembles is in contrast with one other, we'd like to easily agree. However, the nature of the two outfits is quite similar, let's admit. Agreed, the top layering piece on Heath is longer than Ranveer's blazer here, all in all, let's agree to the fact that both outfits are examples of a 'three-piece' ensemble. To a point, that even the green on Ledger's well-fitted waistcoat can be found in traces on Singh's footwear pick. © Viral Bhayani Another thing to mention: his shirt + necktie pairing is quite on the conservative side. Unlike Heath's visual clutter in this territory, Singh opted for contrast with a classic white shirt and a boardroom-appropriate necktie. Not to forget, it's perfectly knotted and displaying no casual behaviour. All in all, while this isn't an overused colour choice for a men's suit and not the craziest stunt of the actor, this is Ranveer Singh in his purest form. © Viral Bhayani Plus, to end this story, let's repeat together: Heath Ledger, you were a legend man.
  12. PM Abbasi, King Abdullah II of Jordan meet in Istanbul. Photo: APP ISTANBUL: Pakistan and Jordan have expressed deep concern on the implication of the United States? decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to move its embassy there. This was discussed during a meeting on Wednesday of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and King Abdullah II of Jordan at the sidelines of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation summit in Istanbul. They underscored that the decision was contrary to the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly, and undermined international legitimacy. The decision was rejected by more than 1.5 billion Muslims of the world. The two leaders discussed the importance of further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. The prime minister invited King Abdullah II to visit Pakistan. Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua and Pakistan's Ambassador to Turkey Syrus Sajjad Qazi also attended the meeting.
  13. Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveils the Roadster 2 during a presentation in Hawthorne, California, US, November 16, 2017.Photo: REUTERS MIAMI: SpaceX confirmed Wednesday its CEO Elon Musk plans to blast his cherry red electric car off toward the Red Planet when the company´s Falcon Heavy rocket launches for the first time next month. Many wondered if Musk was joking last week when he tweeted his plans for the Falcon Heavy´s inaugural payload to be his "midnight cherry Tesla Roadster playing Space Oddity," the classic song by the late David Bowie. "Destination is Mars orbit. Will be in deep space for a billion years or so if it doesn´t blow up on ascent," the famed space enthusiast and Internet tycoon said on Twitter on Friday. But SpaceX confirmed to AFP on Wednesday that the plan is for real. Touted as the "world´s most powerful rocket," the Falcon Heavy is designed to one day carry crew and supplies to deep space destinations such as the Moon and Mars. It can propel 119,000 pounds (54 metric tons) -- or the same as a fully loaded Boeing 737 jet -- into orbit, twice the load of the Delta IV Heavy, currently the biggest rocket in operation. The Saturn V moon rocket, which last flew in 1973, was more powerful. There were also two bigger rockets during the Soviet era -- the N1 which was the most powerful first stage ever built, though it failed to launch successfully; and Energia which only launched twice. The Falcon Heavy is essentially three of the California-based company´s Falcon 9 rockets put together, with 27 Merlin engines instead of nine. SpaceX says it will cost a third of what it costs to launch the Delta IV. A date has not yet been set for the Falcon Heavy launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, which has been delayed several times -- but SpaceX says it should happen in January 2018. According to astronomer and blogger Phil Plait, who was able to reach Musk for more details about the plan, the car won´t be sent into orbit around Mars, but will enter "an orbit around the Sun that takes it as close to the Sun as Earth and as far out as Mars." Other items may be added to the payload as well. "Just bear in mind that there is a good chance this monster rocket blows up, so I wouldn´t put anything of irreplaceable sentimental value on it," Musk was quoted as saying.
  14. You know The Rock. We know The Rock. The world knows The Rock. And of course, his legendary and iconic bull tattoo. It's safe to say that his tattoo made more appearances on brands and advertisements than the Rock himself. The tattoo had attained such iconic status that people almost started relating every bull faced tattoo to The Rock's. Here's The Rock's Brahma Bull tattoo. Yes, it's called the Brahma Bull! © Instagram The Rock carried the tattoo for almost two decades, until now. With his astronomical success in the past 5 years or so, the Rock has grown just as much intellectually, as he has grown physically and financially. If you follow him on Instagram, a place he's as active as he is in his gym, you'd know how insightful and inspirational the Rock's posts are. He always talks about being a hard worker, never giving up under dire circumstances and never forgets to be grateful to his fans, never. If there's one Instagram account that can turn you into a cannon ball of positivity, it's the Rock's. Fast-forward to the present day and his Brahma Bull tattoo looks like this. After approximately 30 hours of tattooing (4 sessions) with my good bud and iconic artist @nikkohurtado, the story of my skull is complete. Flow of positive energy is constant thru the breathe of life. Horns always positioned forward. Not up, but forward - representing forward progress and always at the ready to dig in and dig deep. Eye is the mana - the spirit and the power. It's everything. It's where I draw my strength from all things I love and protect. As with my Polynesian tattoo on the left side of body, the symbolic mana lays over my heart. We all have mana. Our strength. You just have to find it. #BullDNA #Energy #Progress #Mana A post shared by therock (@therock) on Nov 27, 2017 at 1:00am PST In the Rock's own words- 'The story of his skull is complete'. This certainly represents how he has grown over the years, as a person and what he expects out of himself in the future. The whole tattoo reconstruction took 30 hours, spread out across 4 sessions to finish. The man behind the Rock's incredible ink is world renowned ink slinger, Nikko Hurtado. 15. BAGHDAD: Iraqi forces said Friday that Daesh fighters are withdrawing deep into the desert to escape an offensive aimed at a final defeat of the militants. Daesh has already been driven out of all of the towns it once held, but Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has said he will not proclaim victory until the militants have been cleared from the western desert bordering Syria. The Hashed al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilisation) paramilitary force said its fighters had taken control of 77 villages and hamlets since the launch of the offensive on Thursday morning. It said five militants had been killed south of the ancient desert city of Hatra, but otherwise Daesh had put up little resistance. The Hashed said that its fighters overran an airfield in the same area, where they discovered underground warehouses used by the militants. Air support for the offensive, which also involves the army and federal police, has so far been provided exclusively by the Iraqi air force. The US-led coalition, which has provided air support for other offensives against Daesh in Iraq, said it carried out no strikes on Thursday. "We will provide strikes if we know that there is an ISIS (IS) cell, or tunnels, or something there," coalition spokesman US Colonel Ryan Dillon told AFP. "If the requests are not coming, we won't do a strike... it's supply and demand," he said. "And when you're in such a vast wide open desert area... there's less of a requirement for precision-guided missiles," unlike in urban areas. At its peak in 2014, Daesh ruled over seven million people in a territory as large as Italy encompassing large parts of Syria and nearly a third of Iraq. It is now being flushed out of its last desert hideouts in Iraq and under attack by Russian-backed government forces and US-backed Kurdish-led fighters in its last pockets of control in Syria.

"Power-hungry politicians and incapable rulers have failed to pay any attention to the real problems faced by the nation,? Bilawal lashed out as he addressed a party convention through hologram technology in Gujar Khan. ?How will a country that has economic injustice and fails to provide equal opportunity to its citizen progress?? Bilawal stressed, adding that every year 300,000 youth become part of the unemployed part of the population. ?The country?s wealth is only restricted to a few clans,? he said, adding that steeps price hikes have rendered the nation helpless. Stating that his party continues to promulgate its ideology of progressive politics, he said: ?Shaheed Bibi kept Shaheed Bhutto?s tradition alive after he handed over the nation?s hand to her." He remarked that 'Shaheed Bibi fought for the underprivileged and the masses' and 'gave them an ideology.' He also added that fifty years ago, his mother raised the flag of rebellion against the system when a dictator was imposed on the nation and a namesake government was ruling the country. ?There is not a lot of difference between the circumstances back then and now,? he remarked.
  17. The London Mithraeum was discovered by chance in 1954 LONDON: A Roman temple has been restored to its original site seven metres below the City of London, using sound, lights and misty haze to bring the ruin back to life. Built in the third century, the London Mithraeum was discovered by chance in 1954 on a World War II bomb site. It became an instant public sensation, with up to 30,000 people per day queueing to see it. The temple of the god Mithras was dismantled and reassembled 100 metres away from its original location so the public could see it when post-war rebuilding on the site was complete. But now the ruins have been moved back and restored, deep beneath Bloomberg´s vast new European headquarters by the Bank of England. "London is a Roman city, yet there are few traces of its distant past that people can experience first-hand," said Sophie Jackson, the project´s lead archaeological consultant. The reconstruction puts the temple back in place, as it looked at the end of the 1954 excavation. "This really was one of the most important discoveries in London, if not in Britain, in the 20th century," said Jackson, from the Museum of London Archaeology team. The site is darkly lit and an audio soundscape reveals some of the noises and Latin chatter that visitors to the temple might have heard as Mithras cult members indulged in feasting, drinking and sacrificing. Sheets of light from above, slicing through the misty haze, complete the temple walls. Mystery cult Mithras was a Roman deity often represented killing a bull, though it is widely believed the figure was derived from a Persian sun god. His cult was all male, and the Mithraeum was a place for members to bond. The temple was built next to the River Walbrook, a now submerged stream running through the City of London. The seam of damp earth helped preserve a wealth of artefacts. Before the new Bloomberg HQ was built, a six-month dig uncovered the largest assemblage of Roman archaeology ever excavated in London. The dig turned up more than 15,000 objects including jewellery, shoes, animal bones and pottery, and brooches that shed light on where Roman Londoners came from, what they ate and how they lived. It also unearthed a wooden tablet from January 8, 57 AD -- the earliest dated handwritten document from Britain. Free to visit, the London Mithraeum opens to the public on Tuesday.
  18. Your squat should be deep and if it is not deep enough, it's not a good squat. Well, this is what a lot of lifters think and guess what, this statement isn't entirely true. Biomechanically, not everyone is made for a deep squat. In fact, deep squatting can even be dangerous for some people. Now that I have your attention, here's the logic behind not squatting ass-to-grass. © the strengthdoc The squat is one of the best compound movements out there. It's functional in nature, boosts strength, helps in testosterone production, and of course, burns more calories. Moreover, it is one of the most scrutinized exercises from a kinesiological perspective. This Is What Happens When You Squat Joint Action: Knee Extension and Hip Extension Muscles Involved: Quadriceps, Hamstrings, Glutes, and Core When you move into a squatting position, apart from the obvious knee flexion, there is a slight anterior pelvic tilt that happens at the hip joint which further allows your spine to move in the flexed position. When you stand up, the knees and hips extend, allowing you to stand while keeping your spine erect (standing position). In the process of knee extension/flexion and hip extension/flexion, there is one more thing that happens at the hip joint and that is the posterior pelvic tilt aka the butt wink. What Exactly Is The Butt Wink? © the abrbellphysio When a person gets in a full deep squat position, his hips rotate inwards. This is called posterior pelvic tilt aka the butt wink. For some people, this rotation happens when they squat below parallel and for some, it could happen even in the partial squat position. In fact, in some cases, there will be no butt wink at all even in the deepest squat position. Why Does The Butt Wink Happen? Well, there's no concrete answer to this as the butt wink can happen due to varied reasons. However, researchers have come up with two common reasons that cause the butt wink. Reason 1 Length of Femur Bone and Depth of Hip Joint Socket During the descent in a squat, the thigh bone (femur) rotates in the hip socket which is also known as the acetabulum. As we go deep during squats, the femur eventually comes in contact with the front rim of the hip socket. Now, the timing of this contact depends on the size of the femur and the depth of the socket. When the femur can no longer rotate at this point, there's a posterior pelvic tilt that takes place in order to continue the descent. Therefore, the butt wink happens due to a limited joint range. Reason 2 Lack Of Mobility Now, this factor has a very limited impact over the butt wink. If a lifter has tight hamstrings, while in the descending phase of a squat, the hamstrings will pull the pelvis inwards which will result in the posterior pelvic tilt. However, by incorporating post-workout static stretches, one can surely work at it and overcome the mobility issue, which will further prevent the posterior pelvic tilt during a squat. What Is The Issue With The Butt Wink? Whenever you are in a squatting position, there's a ton of force acting on your spinal vertebras. The rounding of the upper back or the lower back in the presence of such force could result in some serious spinal issues like slipped discs and spondylolysis. This is the key reason as to why we need to keep our spine neutral during squats and deadlifts. Therefore, at the point of the butt wink, there is a rounding of the spine that happens around our lower back area which is not safe at all, especially if you are performing weighted squats. The Take Home Point © YouTube There are no fixed exercise rules (there are basic guidelines) but there are fixed human body rules. To be a successful lifter you need to understand these rules. If you want to squat safely, just go deep until the point when you don't see a butt winks. 19. Maria Sharapova outlasted Petra Kvitova 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to win the China Open and return to No 2 in the rankings. Photo: AP BEIJING: Maria Sharapova gained revenge over the Latvian 16th seed Anastasija Sevastova with a gutsy 7-6 (7/3), 5-7, 7-6 (9/7) victory in the China Open first round on Saturday. It was the five-time Grand Slam winner´s first appearance since she was beaten by Sevastova at the US Open in early September and gets her stop-start return from a doping ban back on track. Sharapova, ranked 104 in the world, is a wildcard in Beijing as she works her way back slowly from a 15-month ban for taking the banned substance meldonium. She was far from her best, but Sharapova dug in during an attritional match lasting more than three hours. Sevastova broke the Russian former number one ? who had the majority of the crowd behind her ? in the seventh game of the first set to seize the early initiative. Sharapova immediately broke back for 4-4, before falling 6-5 down on her own serve when her drop shot went astray, only to strike back immediately to force a tie-break. "Come on!" the former China Open champion Sharapova shouted as she wrapped up the first-set tie-break. The 30-year-old looked set to race through the second set to book her place in round two. But her serve was suspect all match and the Latvian refused to submit. Sevastova broke Sharapova once more as the match clock hit the two-hour mark to level the encounter at one-set each, before Sharapova finally saw off her resilient opponent in an epic decider. Earlier, the second seed Simona Halep battled past the American Alison Riske in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

The World War II cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA 35), which was lost July 30, 1945, is seen off the Mare Island Navy Yard, California, US, on July 10, 1945, after her final overhaul and repair of combat damage. Courtesy Bureau of Ships Collection in the US National Archives/US Navy/Handout via REUTERS Researchers have found the wreckage of the US warship Indianapolis, which was sunk by a Japanese torpedo in the final days of World War Two, more than 5.5 kilometres (18,000 feet) below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, the Navy said on Saturday. The cruiser was returning from its mission to deliver components for the atomic bomb that would soon be dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima when it was fired upon in the North Pacific Ocean by a Japanese submarine on July 30, 1945. It sunk in 12 minutes, according to the Naval History and Heritage Command in Washington. No distress signal was sent. About 800 of the 1,196 crew members aboard survived the sinking, but only 316 were rescued alive five days later, with the rest lost to exposure, dehydration, drowning, and sharks. After a Navy historian unearthed new information in 2016 about the warship's last movements that pointed to a new search area, a team of civilian researchers led by Paul Allen, a Microsoft Corp co-founder, spent months searching in a 1,500-square-kilometre (600-square-mile) patch of ocean. With a vessel rigged with equipment that can reach some of the deepest ocean floors, members of Allen's team found the wreckage somewhere in the Philippine Sea on Friday, Allen said in a statement on his website. The statement said the Navy had asked Allen to keep the precise location confidential. Allen said that the discovery was a humbling experience and a means of honouring sailors he saw as playing a vital role in ending World War Two. "While our search for the rest of the wreckage will continue, I hope everyone connected to this historic ship will feel some measure of closure at this discovery so long in coming," he said. Identification was easier than in some deep-sea expeditions: some of the exposed wreck was clearly marked with Indianapolis signage, according to photographs shared by Allen and the Navy. "It is exceedingly rare you find the name of the ship on a piece of the wreckage," Paul Taylor, a spokesman for the Naval History and Heritage Command, said in a telephone interview. "If that's not Indianapolis then I don't know what is." The Navy said it had plans to honour the 22 survivors from the Indianapolis still alive along with the families of the ship's crew.
  22. We all remember Maxim Gorky, Rabindranath Tagore, Ernest Hemingway, James Watt, Thomas Alva Edison, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Wright Brothers as some of the few people who left their mark in the world but do you also know that all of them were partially or wholly self-taught. They did not rely completely on the education that school had to offer. These kinds of people are called autodidacts. Here is a list of such people, try and see how many you already know. It was very beautifully penned down by the American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, Mark Twain as “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” Here are some proven techniques and effects which can radically change the way you learn things. 1. The Pomodoro Technique: © Fractus Learning A technique developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980's to help you focus your attention over a short period of time. Pomodoro is an Italian word for tomato and is called so because Francesco used a tomato-shaped timer while practising this technique. Traditionally, the timer is set to 25 minutes, but you may vary it slightly according to your needs. Now, once the timer starts ticking, you are not allowed to sneak off to web surf or chat on the phone. So, the thought is, for those 25 minutes you need to focus on the process and not on the product. You will be tempted by distractions but you will be pleased with how easy it is to get your attention back. 2. The Feynman Technique: © Ace Tutors The Feynman technique has been named after Richard Feynman, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist. This technique demands people come up with a simple metaphor or analogy to help them grasp the essence of an idea. You may relate to it if you try to remember that you learned a concept better when you taught it to someone else. You can use the Feynman technique to understand the ideas that you do not really get or to remember those which you understand but forget on the day of the test. Follow these steps: Choose a topic Try to pretend that you are teaching this idea to a new student. When you get stuck at some point, go back to your reference material. Simplify the language and concept and create analogies to grasp the concept better. 3. The Memory Palace Technique: Remember Benedict Cumberbatch in 'Sherlock Holmes' using the mind palace technique to capture and trace a lot of information in his head? This technique basically involves calling to mind a familiar place like the layout of your workplace which you can use as a visual notepad where you can deposit concept images that you want to remember. You can use it to remember a long list. For example, sin cos and tan theta formulas can be remembered as “some people have curly brown hair through proper brushing” to remember that sin theta is equal to perpendicular upon hypotenuse and respectively for cos and tan theta. It can still be difficult to remember this but it becomes much easier if you also add the memory palace to it. Like, Some people like Rahul have curly...You get the idea. 4. The Hard-Start-Jump-To-Easy-Technique: © SuperThinking Students are often advised to start with an easy question so that they do not get demotivated at the starting phase of the test, but this is not the best practice. Instead, start with a difficult problem and if you get stuck, quickly switch to the easier once. Then get back to the difficult problem again. Now, this switch activates your diffuse and focused modes which are very important to solve the most difficult problems in your test sheet. 5. The Einstellung Effect: © Central Coffee It is a kind of mindset which restricts us to a repeated use of tried and true strategies to solve any problem, even though a simpler strategical solution exists. Now, if you observe this carefully, it is a big problem. It makes you look like a zombie and you tend to develop a mechanical state of mind. You lose creativity while solving the problem with a different technique. You can still mitigate its effect by following these steps: Remind yourself of the effect to be consciously aware. Enter your boketto mode. Try gazing at the sky without thinking anything. It gives your mind a break. Adopt a beginner's mindset. 6. The Testing Effect: © OpenPSYC This technique helps in improving long-term memory, often with the help of retrieving information that you once learned. This improvement in knowledge because of test taking is known as the testing effect. Testing basically strengthens and stabilises the related neural patterns in your brain and you can practice it using flash cards and by getting feedback from others. So, the next time you learn a topic and if you don't get it at once, try remembering the main points you have learned and then get back to the revision process. The same goes when you leave a problem half solved, thinking you know the complete solution when you actually don't. To strengthen your neural patterns you must take enough tests on a regular ibasis. Now, according to the Law of Serendipity: Lady luck favours the one who tries. So, start practising some of these techniques to overcome many of the problems you face while learning a new subject.
