Ajay Devgn talks about how filmmaking has become difficult because of increased feedback -
SS Rajamouli’s RRR has collected over Rs 900 crore at the global box office and is currently the fifth highest grosser of all-time as it heads towards the Rs 1000 crore mark. Besides Jr NTR and Ram Charan, the movie also features Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn in important cameos. In fact, Ajay didn’t just feature in the film, he also attached the trailer of his upcoming directorial Runway 34 to give it maximum reach. © Ajay Devgn Ffilms Recently, he announced that a second trailer of the film is on its way and now we hear that Ajay has decided to cash in the popularity of another upcoming South Indian phenomenon called KGF: Chapter 2. While he doesn’t feature in the Yash starrer action spectacle, but will be associated with the film as the second trailer of Runway 34 will be screened across the country once the Prashanth Neel directorial releases on April 14. A source told Pinkvilla, “The second trailer of Runway 34 will be launched amidst fanfare at a grand event in Delhi on April 11. Just three days after its release, the same trailer will be screened in cinema halls along with KGF: Chapter 2. The makers had this plan with them ready long before to reach out to a wide section of audience across the globe. For KGF 2, they have tied up directly with the national chains to screen the trailer.” Besides directing the film, Ajay Devgn also stars in the lead role and is pitted opposite Amitabh Bachchan. Runway 34 also features Rakul Preet Singh and Boman Irani in important roles. Inspired by a true story, Runway 34 releases on April 29, 2022. © Hombale Films As for KGF: Chapter 2, the film also stars Ranveena Tandon and Sanjay Dutt and is expected to set the box office on fire upon its release. As it was expected before the release, SS Rajamouli’s RRR has, in fact, turned out to be one of the biggest blockbusters of Indian cinema. The film has already surpassed the lifetime business of the biggest Tamil blockbuster 2.0 directed by Shankar and starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar. Now, it is on course to go past Rs 1000 crore mark to become only the third Indian film in history after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion & Dangal. © DVV Entertainment Amid the film's ongoing box office triumph, a journalist took to Twitter and compared a sequence featuring Ajay Devgn in the film to a sequence in John Abraham’s 2021 dud Satyameva Jayate 2. He further added how the Ajay Devgn scene in the film shares an uncanny similarity to a flashback sequence in the Milap Zaveri directed critical and commercial failure. The tweet read, “It is so uncanny that 20 mins post the interval point of #RRR and #SatyamevaJayate2 are so similar. Here the flashback has @ajaydevgn as the revolutionary who motivates his son for Kranti and there it was @TheJohnAbraham di the same. @MassZaveri @ssrajamouli - kaise hua?” © DVV Entertainment Reacting to the comparison, Milap Zaveri mentioned that his film isn’t even 1 per cent of RRR, however, he did add that in his film too John was seen lifting a bike just like Jr NTR in the SS Rajamouli directorial. He tweeted, “Sweet of you sir to compare but me or my film are not even 1% of @ssrajamouli sir and @RRRMovie My hero also carried a bike and so did @tarak9999 sir but audience ne mujhe giraaya aur unhe sar pe bithaaya. Lots to learn from them. #RRR is LEGENDARY and #SMJ2 didn’t work”. © Emmay Entertainment Check out the tweet below: Sweet of you sir to compare but me or my film are not even 1% of @ssrajamouli sir and @RRRMovie My hero also carried a bike and so did @tarak9999 sir but audience ne mujhe giraaya aur unhe sar pe bithaaya. Ajay Devgn celebrates his birthday as he turns 53 today -
The trailer of Dasvi, featuring Abhishek Bachchan, Yami Gautam, and Nimrat Kaur in the lead roles, was finally released on Wednesday (23 March) after a long wait. It's been over a day and the trailer is receiving a positive response from moviegoers. Not just fans, even popular celebrities are appreciating it on social media and one of them is Ajay Devgn. View this post on Instagram Taking to social media, the Singham star appreciated the trailer and called it 'zabardast'. Sharing it on Twitter, he wrote, "Chaudhary saab @juniorbachchan all the best for your #Dasvi. Zabardast Trailer! Looking forward to watching the film on 7th April". Take a look at his post below: Chaudhary saab @juniorbachchan all the best for your #Dasvi Zabardast Trailer! Looking forward to watching the film on 7th April. https://t.co/0AjRJorkcu#DasviTrailer out now. — Ajay Devgn (@ajaydevgn) March 23, 2022 As soon as the superstar shared the trailer of Dasvi, a section of social media users criticised him for not tweeting anything related to The Kashmir Files and showing his support to Vivek Agnihotri's recent release, featuring Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty among others in pivotal roles. Reacting to Devgn's post, a social media user tweeted, "As expected...u tweeted abt Nepo kids movie. Also as expected, u didn't tweet abt Kashmir files. Congratulations". Well, trolling culture has taken over social media and it should come to an end soon. Choosing to react to something or not is a person's personal choice, and no one can be forced to do it. For the unversed, The Kashmir Files depicts the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in 1990 during the Kashmir Insurgency. The film is breaking several records at the domestic box office and has entered the Rs. 200 crore club. Talking about Dasvi, the film features Abhishek Bachchan as a politician who gets arrested in a scam and decides to take the board exams for Class 10 from jail. Directed by Tushar Jalota, it delivers a message about the importance of education in a humorous way. Dasvi is slated to premiere on JioCinema and Netflix on April 7. View the full article

Ajay Devgn opens up about casting Amitabh Bachchan in 'Runway 34'

Ajay Devgn says, ?The energy and dedication Amitabh Bachchan works with is amazing? -
There are a lot of Bollywood actors who, with time, decide to switch gears and turn filmmakers. This has been happening in Hindi cinema since the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s when actors like Sunil Dutt, Raj Kapoor, Feroz Khan, Manoj Kumar and Dev Anand turned from being successful movie stars to hit filmmakers. However, not every great and acclaimed actor is lucky enough to taste success when they turn directors. While some decide to stay away from the Director's chair after delivering their first dud, others don’t give up and, eventually, taste success. Here’s a list of 5 acclaimed Bollywood actors who turned directors and delivered duds: 1. Sunny Deol © Vijayta Films Two times National Film Award-winning actor Sunny Deol was already a major star when he decided to take the reins of his troubled production Dillagi into his own hands. The title was changed from London to Dillagi, the lead actress was changed from Karisma Kapoor to Urmila Matondkar and the director was changed from Gurinder Chaddha to Sunny Deol. Dillagi was Sunny Deol’s debut as a director but unfortunately, the film failed to make a mark at the box office and was panned by the critics. According to Box Office India, made on a budget of Rs 14 crore, Dillagi could only collect Rs 10.50 crore. Sunny Deol went on to helm two more films - Ghayal Once Again (2016) and Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas (2019) but is yet to find success as a director. 2. Anupam Kher © Pooja Entertainment National Film Award-winning actor Anupam Kher made his directorial debut with the 2002 film Om Jai Jagadish. Starring Anil Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Mahima Chaudhary, Urmila Matondkar, Tara Sharma and Waheeda Rehman, Om Jai Jagadish was a remake of Rajesh Khanna’s 1969 hit Do Raaste. Made on a budget of Rs 13 crore, the film could make only Rs 6.15 crore and turned out to be a disaster, according to Box Office India. It was also panned by the film critics. Anupam Kher hasn’t directed a film since. 3. Naseeruddin Shah © CAT Films Based against the backdrop of 9/11, Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota marked three times National Film Award winner Naseeruddin Shah’s debut as a director. The film starred Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Jimmy Sheirgill, Paresh Rawal, Ratna Pathak Shah, Ayesha Takia and Suhasini Mulay. According to Box Office India, the film was a huge disaster as it could only collect Rs 1.23 crore on a budget of Rs 6.25 crore. Shah hasn’t directed a film since. 4. Ajay Devgn © Ajay Devgn Ffilms Two times National Film Award winner Ajay Devgn made his directorial debut in 2008 with the romantic drama U Me Aur Hum starring himself along with his wife Kajol. Made on a budget of Rs 25 crore, the film could only collect Rs 20.98 crore and declared a flop at the box office, according to Box Office India. Eight years later, Ajay Devgn returned to direction with the action thriller Shivaay, the film was a success. 5. Pankaj Kapoor © Eros International Three times National Film Award winner Pankaj Kapur made his directorial debut with the 2011 romantic drama Mausam starring his son Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. According to Box Office India, Mausam was made on a budget of Rs 49 crore and earned only Rs 31.56 crore. It was termed a flop. Pankaj Kapur hasn’t directed a film since. View the full article

There is a particular sequence that lasts for a few minutes in one of the first three episodes of Rudra: The Edge of Darkness, where Ajay Devgn’s character DCP Rudraveer Singh is just sitting casually with a carefree attitude while a serial killer’s histrionics are on full display. At that moment, you realise only an actor of Ajay Devgn’s stature could’ve pulled that scene off. In that whole sequence where minimalism is key, any lesser actor would’ve tried to upstage the other actor playing the serial killer. It’s Ajay's understated performance that elevates Rudra to new heights. Based on the popular British show Luther starring Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson, Rudra: The Edge of Darkness is about brilliant supercop Rudraveer Singh (Ajay Devgn) who is going through a tough time in his marriage with Shail (Esha Deol) and is notorious for taking the law into his hands to catch killers. © Disney+ HotStar Once a psychopathic killer Aliyah (Raashii Khanna) slips through his hands and he reluctantly forms a unique bond with her and even seeks her help whenever he is stuck in his investigation. We go on this journey with Rudra as he tries to nab serial killers while dealing with his troubled personal life, one episode at a time. Director Rajesh Mapuskar, who helmed the feel-good movie Ferrari Ki Sawaari in 2012 and a comedy-drama in Ventilator in 2016, changes gear here and helms a gripping thriller quite skillfully. I loved how he gave the show an almost neo-noir-ish treatment. While I am not really a fan of episodic treatment of the narrative in shows, it works here. I believe if you are adapting an already brilliant show or a movie, the best way to do it is to follow it to a T. As they say, why fix something if it isn’t broken? Rudra is more or less a faithful remake of Luther and that is a good thing. The cinematography and the way Mumbai city has been shot add to the thrill and gloom element of the show. The editing is quite good as well. The episodes are around an hour long each but due to their taut screenplay, they flow smoothly. © Disney+ HotStar Coming to the performances, as mentioned, Ajay Devgn delivers a knock-out performance. There is another scene where subtlety works in the favour. When Rudra’s wife tells him about seeing another guy, Ajay doesn’t emote much and yet you feel the pain and shock he is going through. While Idris Elba’s portrayal was a bit flamboyant in the original, Ajay Devgn takes it easy & makes it work. Raashii Khanna, who was last seen in a brief role in Madras Cafe in 2013 is a revelation here. Her character is such that she could’ve easily gone overboard with it but thankfully, that didn’t happen. Some of the best scenes in the show are between Rudra & Aliyah and their chemistry is like a house on fire. Atul Kulkarni is always good at almost anything he does. He plays Gautam, Rudra’s colleague and close friend. Can’t wait to see how his character shapes up in future episodes. Ashwini Kalsekar as Rudra’s boss provides able support. Tarun Gahlot as Rudra’s partner is another good performer and has quite a good screen presence. Among the actors playing serial killers, KC Shankar stands out. On the downside, if you have watched Luther, there is not much in the Hindi remake that may interest you, besides the presence of Ajay Devgn, of course. At least going by the first three episodes. © Disney+ HotStar With just 6 episodes, Rudra: The Edge of Darkness is dark, edgy & a binge-worthy thriller. View the full article

After staying away from the Hindi film industry for almost nine years, Raashii Khanna is making a comeback with her debut web series Rudra: The Edge of Darkness. The show also marks the OTT debut of Ajay Devgn and is an official remake of the popular British show Luther starring Idris Elba. In Rudra, Raashii plays the character that was originally portrayed by Ruth Wilson. © raashi khanna instagram When asked about how she was approached for the role and how she got on board, Raashii exclusively told MensXP, “So, basically when they were looking out for Alia Chowksi’s role, as in when they were looking out for people to play her, I think they auditioned a lot of actors and they asked me also to audition for it. Because they were like, ‘Haan theek hai South mein ho and you are doing great but we need an actor and we would want you to audition for it. Will you be up for it?’ I said, ‘Of course’ because I haven’t seen Luther and they had sent me the script and they’d sent me the character brief and I was really excited because as an actor we wish to get something that is out of our comfort zone. And when I read about it, I was pretty excited to give the audition and I gave it very earnestly because I really enjoyed playing her. And somewhere in my heart, I thought maybe you know I should get it. And I did.” She further added that after getting the role, she decided not to watch the original because she didn’t want to get influenced by Ruth Wilson’s performance. However, she knew that the actress got a lot of acclaim and accolades for her performance. She also knows that she has a responsibility and there will be comparisons but she isn’t bothered by it. She is just happy that people are intrigued by her character from the trailer. © raashi khanna instagram When asked if she was nervous working with a superstar like Ajay Devgn also considering that her character is such she has to rattle him in the show. She responded, “So, usually I am not really starstruck in life. But, when I was going to work with him I knew that I had to have a certain comfort level because he is a superstar and you know there are chances I might get intimidated by him. You know there are chances and I was fully prepared for it. So I was like, ‘Sir I think will be intimidating’. Because he doesn’t talk much, that's what I felt. But the first day when I went, he just treated me like this buddy and he was like, ‘Aaja baith jaa and we’ll do our lines’ and I was like, ‘Hain! It’s so easy’, you know. I think it was only difficult in my head but when I sat with him and we read the lines I think it became very easy for me and I saw a co-star next to me and not a superstar, which I think is all thanks to him. I don’t think I would’ve pulled off 10 per cent of Alia if not for him and his support.” © Disney+ Hotstar Rudra: The Edge of Darkness streams on Disney+ Hotstar from March 4. View the full article

A few months back at an interview round table, Taapsee Pannu & Sanya Malhotra had complained about disparity between a male and female lead. They had talked about how the biggest of the actresses play second fiddle to an actor but not the other way round. You don’t see major stars doing supporting roles in films centred around an actress. It often happens in Hollywood where male stars do supporting roles in films but it rarely happens in Bollywood. Well, with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's latest directorial Gangubai Kathiawadi, Ajay Devgn has proved why he is the most secure superstar in the Hindi film industry. © Bhansali Productions While the film is centred around Alia Bhatt’s character and she has nailed her performance, Ajay Devgn plays an important supporting role and adds value to the narrative. This is truly one of the few times where a major movie star has accepted a supporting role in a female-centric film in Bollywood. Moreover, his character isn’t romantically involved with Alia’s character. In fact, the two share a brother-sister kinda relationship. Having said that, Gangubai Kathiawadi isn’t the only time Ajay Devgn has proved why he is the most secure Bollywood star, he has done it time and again. In an industry and a profession where actors are highly insecure about their image and ageing on-screen, Ajay Devgn has displayed it quite frequently and successfully. In the 2019 rom-com De De Pyar De, he played a 50-year-old man and the film actually addressed the age gap in his relationship with a girl who was 24 years younger than him. The May-December romantic comedy was a success at the box office. © T-Series Two years before that in the 2017 blockbuster Golmaal Again, there is a whole subplot where Ajay’s character has fallen head over heels in love with Parineeti Chopra’s character not knowing that she is a ghost (spoiler alert?) and he is actually a fatherly figure to her. In fact, throughout the film, there is a running joke about Ajay’s character being of her father’s age. In one sequence, Arshad Warsi’s character points out “Bachpan-Pachpan”. Which other superstar would do that? © Reliance Entertainment Sure, Aamir Khan played a father in Dangal but for that, he completely changed his appearance and his daughters in the film weren’t leading stars back then. Also, the film showed the journey of his character from young to old. In the 2016 film Fitoor, Ajay Devgn was seen in a special appearance where he played a fatherly figure to one of the young stars of today, Aditya Roy Kapur who starred alongside Katrina Kaif. © UTV Motion Pictures In the 2004 film Taarzan the Wonder Car, when Ajay was only 35 years old, he played a father to the film’s lead hero Vatsal Seth. © Baba Films This isn’t all! Ajay Devgn is also possibly the only current superstar to have starred in a horror film. Horror is a genre that is considered highly difficult to execute and its success rate of it is quite low. Despite that, Ajay Devgn not only starred in one but it also turned out to be a cult hit in the genre. The film was Ram Gopal Varma’s 2003 hit Bhoot. © Nitin Manmohan Now, I am not saying Ajay hasn’t romanced actresses 20 plus years younger than him or hasn’t tried to play a younger guy than his current age. But, at a time when other superstars are trying to hold on to their leading man image, he is the only one breaking stereotypes. Whether playing his age on screen or doing a supporting role in a female-centric film, Ajay Devgn is a superstar like no other. View the full article

He said, “The concept of Rudra was intriguing for me. Instead, he is analytical and puts details first. Rudra is suave, nuanced and mindful and that’s why I was drawn to him in the first place.” © Disney+ Hotstar Ajay’s fans have had a very strong reaction to the trailer of the show, as well as how the actor looked in the trailer. Many of them, have already predicted that the series is going to be a massive blockbuster, and has the potential to be one of the best OTT series to have been made in India. Directed by Rajesh Mapushkar, the series is a remake of the British series ‘Luther,’ which features Idris Elba. © BBC One The show has a massive fanbase thanks to the gritty characters and expansive scope of the show. Ajay Devgn begins shooting for Drishyam 2 with Shriya Saran

Released in 2015, Drishyam, directed by late Nishikant Kamat, was an official Hindi remake of the 2013 Malayalam hit of the same name starring Mohanlal. The Hindi remake starred Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran, Rajat Kapoor and Tabu in the lead roles and was an average success at the box office. However, over the years, it garnered a cult following and became a pop culture phenomenon. © Panorama Studios Last year, when Mohanlal returned for the sequel of the original Drishyam titled Drishyam 2, a lot of fans started looking forward to an update on the Hindi sequel. A few months later, Drishyam 2 Hindi was announced with the same cast and Abhishek Pathak took over the directorial reins post Nishikant Kamat’s untimely demise. The eagerly anticipated sequel has finally started filming with Ajay Devgn and Shriya Saran, who will be reprising their roles of husband and wife from the first film. © Panorama Studios Sharing a behind the scene still from the film, Ajay Devgn tweeted, “Can Vijay protect his family again? #Drishyam2 shoot begins. #Tabu @shriya1109 @AbhishekPathakk @KumarMangat”. After Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, filmmaker SS Rajamouli is returning with another grand spectacle that is RRR starring NTR Jr & Ram Charan. This time, he also roped in two major Bollywood stars - Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn. While it is the first time SS Rajamouli has collaborated with Alia for a film, contrary to the popular belief, this isn’t his first collaboration with Ajay Devgn. Almost a decade before RRR, and a few years before he found nationwide fame and acclaim with Baahubali films, SS Rajamouli was one of the most talked-about filmmakers in Telugu cinema and had directed a high on VFX film with a CGI fly as its lead, Eega. © Vaaraahi Chalana Chitram After the film’s massive success in Telugu, SS Rajamouli decided to release it in Hindi and present it to a nationwide audience. For the Hindi version, he got in touch with Ajay Devgn and roped him in as the narrator of the film along with his wife and actress Kajol. My association with @SSRajamouli Sir dates back to 2012. We’ve collaborated in many interesting ways since. Working with him in #RRR is an honour & pleasure. https://t.co/G88HeNAVLG — Ajay Devgn (@ajaydevgn) January 21, 2020 Talking about getting Ajay onboard, Rajamouli had told Indian Express, “The film opens with a father telling his daughter a story and I wanted an actor like Ajay Devgn for who the audience has regards as a nice family man. And even though he agreed immediately I made him watch the film. The best compliment was when after the screening he said that he would like to show the film to his children.” © Vaaraahi Chalana Chitram Watch Ajay Devgn and Kajol’s narration for Makkhi below: To pay a tribute to Ajay Devgn, SS Rajamouli had also added a special dance sequence at the end where the CGI fly enacts Ajay Devgn’s two iconic roles from Singham and his debut film Phool Aur Kaante. Talking about the tribute, SS Rajamouli had said in a statement, “For a film like Makkhi, it is very important that the audience leave the theatre with warmth in their heart and a smile on their face. So we came up with the idea of making the makkhi dance for the end credits. But makkhi riding on two houseflies is the cherry on top.” View the full article

Ajay Devgn has come a very long way and is one of the bankable stars Bollywood has. He made his debut with the film Phool Aur Kante in 1991. Soon, he became a prominent face in Bollywood and just like any other actor, he has also seen his movies not working at the box office or resonating with the audience. He has given the Bollywood buffs Singham and he has a crazy fan base. View this post on Instagram On National Youth Day, Ajay decided to write a note to the 20-year old version of himself. He told how he had difficulties fitting in and also talked about brutal rejections that he had to face. He wrote, “Dear 20-year-old me, you are making your mark in this new world as an actor. Let me be honest, you are going to face brutal rejections. Shy and conventional, you will try your hardest to fit in but fail spectacularly. People’s criticism and doubts will be hard and it will make you question your dreams. You will fail more than you succeed.” He added, “But spoiler alert, it’s all going to be worth it…because one day, slowly, you’ll realize being yourself can be your greatest strength. So stumble a little but don’t stop. Keep pushing the boundaries and don’t let the world’s expectations turn into inhibitions. Always be true, always be you. Learn how to dance, it will help in the long run. Love, an older, wise, better-looking you.” Here’s the post: This #NationalYouthDay decided to pen down a few words for the 20-year-old Ajay, I hope he appreciates it. pic.twitter.com/zA3S4Mhuy8 — Ajay Devgn (@ajaydevgn) January 12, 2022 It indeed was an emotional note that Ajay dedicated to himself but sadly, we love in the world of trolls and he wasn’t spared for his note. Bollywood star Ajay Devgn has worked tirelessly and most of the time, effortlessly in the field where he is just so good. Yeah! Ajay has really been working relentlessly in the industry ever since making his debut in Phool Aur Kaante all the way back in 1991. © YouTube This means that he has been working in movies every year for the last 31 years. This is one of the reasons why Ajay is clearly at that stage in life and career where he can choose to do the kind of films that he wants to do, the kind of people he wants to work with. And that's exactly what he's been doing. Ajay is also at the center of many Bollywood universes, thanks to pal Rohit Shetty and his own acting abilities. © Netflix He's the main character of the Golmaal series as well as the Singham series which has now become a big cop universe that also has superstars Ranveer Singh and Akshay Kumar. Having said all of that, you can understand that with the kind of experience Ajay has, it's fair to say that it doesn't come cheap at all, with the actor earning a lot of money for his roles. You know that if you have Ajay on board a film, it's almost guaranteed success at the box office. This may point out his salary in one of his upcoming films. We are talking about SS Rajamouli's RRR which also stars actors Ram Charan, NTR Jr., and Alia Bhatt. © DVV Entertainments The movie, with the tremendous star cast, is obviously a much-awaited film being made on a very grand scale. So, it is natural that Ajay gets a big slice of the pie as well. That's right. Ajay is reported to get a lot of money for his cameo role in the film. In fact, if the reports are true, the earnings actually are a hell of a lot bigger than many superstars' normal movie incomes. As per a report in Bollywood Hungama, Ajay's getting a staggering Rs. 35 Crore rupees for his cameo role, for which he worked for around 7 days. "Devgn’s presence in RRR is a trickier situation. Although he features in a guest appearance he is almost a leading man in terms of the character’s development and impact. For 7 days’ work, Devgn has been paid a whopping Rs 35 crores." View this post on Instagram Alia's salary, on the other hand, is what she charges normally. “At least Alia Bhatt has been paid what she normally charges other producers in Mumbai. Although she has less than twenty minutes of playing-time she is the official leading lady of RRR and has been paid close to Rs. 9 crores for her brief role,” the report said citing a source. The report further shed light on the impact that Ajay and Alia have in North India. “Devgn and Alia are the audience-baiters in North India. Over there only Rajamouli sells as the director of Baahubali. But is that enough?” said the source. We knew Ajay was a wonderful actor, yes. But his star pull, of course, cannot be understated.
