  5. For a batsman who was busy hammering opposition bowlers all around the park and, in turn, shattering records at will last year, Virat Kohli, to the sheer frustration of Indian fans, is currently not at his prolific best with the willow. The right-hander had scored 5,775 more international runs than anyone else in the last decade. Last year alone, he had amassed 2,370 runs across formats - the fourth consecutive time he had aggregated 2000-plus runs in a single calendar year. But, this year has been a different story altogether. The so-called 'Indian run-machine' has looked a pale shadow of the world-class batsman he is generally celebrated as. And, his batting woes in the recently-concluded tour of New Zealand further dented his reputation as a modern-day great. © Twitter/@BCCI With scores of 45, 11, 38 and 11, Kohli ended the T20I series against the Kiwis without a fifty to his name. The much-awaited fifty did come in the 1st ODI where he scored 51 at Hamilton, but his cheap dismissals - 15 and 9 - in the next two matches continued to highlight his struggles with the willow. The Indian Captain would have definitely wanted to make amends with a better performance in the two-match Test series, but it wasn't meant to be. The 10-wicket loss at Wellington saw him registering scores of just 2 and 19 across two innings. And, he could only manage 3 and 14 over the course of two innings as India suffered a seven-wicket loss at Christchurch and a subsequent 2-0 Test series defeat. Amid immense criticism, Kohli ended the New Zealand tour with just 218 runs (across 4 T20Is, 3 ODIs and 2 Tests) to his name. © Reuters After enduring one of the worst tours of his otherwise decorated career, Kohli will be eager to silence the naysayers and return to form with a better performance against the visiting South African brigade for the three-match ODI series. But, apart from winning back the fans with a swashbuckling performance, Kohli will have an opportunity to enter the record books in the 1st ODI against South Africa. Taking the field at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium in Dharamsala on 12th March, the Indian captain will have a great opportunity to enter his name in the history books as only the sixth cricketer to reach 12,000 runs in ODI history. The Delhi lad is currently 133 runs away from achieving the milestone and entering the elite ODI list which also includes Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar. The Indian skipper, once he reaches 12,000 ODI runs, will become only the second Indian cricketer to achieve the feat. He will also be the fastest to achieve the milestone as other five batsmen including Tendulkar in the elite list took more than 300 innings to get there. When compared with them, Kohli has played just 239 innings so far, with a staggering 11,867 runs to his name. © Reuters While both Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri have publicly played down the importance of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Proteas owing to Team India's focus on World T20 in Australia this October, there is no doubt that Kohli will be eyeing it as an opportunity to hit back at his critics. Also, Kohli's men can ill-afford to lose another series, especially against an inexperienced South African brigade, buoyed with their crushing 3-0 win over Australia recently. The Indian captain will also be in a better headspace this time around with the return of their pivotal all-rounder Hardik Pandya to the side. Pandya proved his fitness on the back of a spectacular performance in the recently-concluded DY Patil T20 tournament. Apart from him, the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, too, will be seen returning in national colours to bolster the Indian side against dangerous-looking Proteas. View the full article
  6. If there has ever been a perfect owner of a football club, it has to be Paris Saint Germain's (PSG) Nasser Al-Khelaifi. The Qatar Sports Investment's president, Al-Khelaifi has left no stone unturned in order to make, what originally was an interesting and ambitious project into a successful project. What he couldn't seem to get his hands on is PSG's luck. On a night when the odds were in Les Rouge et Bleu's favour, considering the two-goal cushion from the first leg and 10 first team players injured for Manchester United, this really should've been a walk in the park, but Manchester United had other ideas in mind. United came from 2-0 first-leg deficit to beat PSG 3-1 and qualified on away goals. It was in the summer of 2017 when PSG decided to get over 'that' round-of-16 loss to Barcelona and signed Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in the same transfer window. A real fantasy manager stuff. These latest acquisitions made the French side look strong both mentally and physically. But as is the case most of the times, fortune favours the brave and last night, it was the Red Devils who proved to be the braver one. Considering this is PSG's second 'they-cannot-lose-now' kind of loss, here are a few similar moments from the two: 1. Early Goal “It's never Mission Impossible, it's more difficult”, admitted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in his press conference. He stressed a lot on scoring an early goal and then staying in the game till the very end and United did just that, scoring the first goal after two minutes courtesy of Romelu Lukaku. Lukaku's goal to make it 0-1 pic.twitter.com/23paOFjNbk — DILLINGER ð¹(@DillanMUFC) March 6, 2019 Wonder where the tactic came from? Barcelona 1 - PSG 0. After just two minutes on the clock, Luis Suarez scored from a defensive mix-up and sparked the historic comeback. 2. Weird Penalty You do need a bit of luck when you're trying to accomplish such mammoth tasks. Not taking anything away from Manchester United and Barcelona, but the penalties given against Presnel Kimpembe and Thomas Meunier were both a little bit harsh. Man United had VAR to thank for the penalty, whereas the referee consulted his assistant before giving the penalty to Barcelona which he denied initially, in 2017. Marcus Rashford's historic winning penalty is even better with Titanic music! pic.twitter.com/ZSRrScw47O — The Man Utd Way (@TheManUtdWay) March 7, 2019 3. Late Late Goal © Reuters Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was one of the major personalities in that era of 'Fergie Time'. The man, who himself knows a thing or two about late goals, saw his team score one thanks to the winning penalty from Marcus Rashford. © Reuters This time, it was Marcus Rashford and the last time, it was Barcelona's academy graduate Sergi Roberto who was found perfectly by Neymar's lofted pass and broke Parisian's hearts. 4. Historic Wins The thing both the games had in common was the 'No-One-Has-Ever-Done-That' factor. For Manchester United, no team had ever overturned a 2-0 home leg defeat in order to qualify. Whereas for Barcelona, no team had ever qualified after losing the first leg away from home 4-0. To everybody's surprise, these teams did the impossible. As for PSG, the project they have and are working on is really an enticing one. Their owner can buy anything, any player, any facility in the world. What we really want to recommend them is to buy some luck as well. As it turns out, PSG is the Tottenham of the Champions League.

  8. MADRID: Atletico Madrid?s Champions League hopes hang by a thread after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Group C minnows Qarabag on Tuesday despite playing a large part of the second half against 10 men. The home side had far more chances than the team from Azerbaijan in the first half but fell behind in the 40th minute when Spanish midfielder Michel rose to meet a corner and delivered too powerful a header for Jan Oblak to keep out. Midfielder Thomas Partey equalised in the 56th minute with a thunderous long-range strike and Atletico were given another boost when Brazilian Pedro Henrique was sent off a minute later. Yet despite laying siege to the visitors? area, Atletico could not find a winner and, to complete their miserable night, they also had their own defender Stefan Savic sent off for a second booking in the 88th minute. ?We always tried to win the game but sometimes in this beautiful sport things don?t go your way and the ball just didn?t want to go in,? said Atletico coach Diego Simeone. ?We have to keep on fighting in the same way, the work of the players is spectacular, we have to keep believing in this team, and I do.? Atletico, Champions League runners-up in 2014 and 2016 and semi-finalists last season, are third in Group C on three points, five behind leaders AS Roma and four behind Chelsea. It means Atletico now need to hope for something remarkable to avoid a group stage exit for the first time since returning to Europe?s elite competition in 2013. Even if they beat Roma and Chelsea in their final two games, they will still need either the Italian side or Premier League champions to drop points against Qarabag. Should they draw with Roma in their next outing, they will need Chelsea to lose to Qarabag to have any chance of moving forward. Atletico went into the must-win game on the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw with Villarreal at home on Saturday and with only one win in their previous seven games in all competitions. They made a bright start as Antoine Griezmann hooked a venomous volley from outside the box to force a fine save from Ibrahim Sehic. The sight of the Bosnian goalkeeper repelling shots from the hosts became a familiar sight for the angst-ridden home fans in the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, which has yet to witness an Atletico win in the Champions League. After Partey?s sensational equaliser, Simeone continued his familiar routine at home games of waving his arms around to encourage the supporters to will on his side, but every time they came forward Sehic got in their way. He thwarted Kevin Gameiro, Diego Godin and captain Gabi in the second half before the final whistle sounded, signalling a likely end to Atletico?s recent thrilling spell in Europe?s top competition.
  9. Opposition Leader Khursheed Shah ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition Khursheed Shah chaired the Public Accounts Committee session on Tuesday where he got indignant at the national carrier Pakistan International Airlines? dismal state of affairs. During the session, the PAC chairman inquired regarding the working of the national airline and the details of the PIA chief consultant. ?How did the PIA appoint a convicted man as the chief consultant?? said the PAC chairman, adding that the person in question is receiving Rs1.5 million monthly salary. While inquiring about the contractor of the airline, Shah objected to the advance payment made to him. ?You (PIA officials) have made payments of Rs48 million and no work was carried out,? said Shah. The committee also summoned details of the PIA employees? travelling and daily allowances within 24 hours. The committee also took notice of the issue of the sale of an aircraft in Malta. Shah said that the issue brought disgrace to the country. The committee ordered to forward the matter to the National Accountability Bureau. It emerged recently that the country?s flagship carrier is slipping further into losses by each passing day, and the management appears to have no clue how to saving the ?sinking Titanic?. Earlier today, PM's Aviation Adviser Sardar Mehtab Abbasi said the airline?s losses have surged to $4 billion as neither the government nor the airline?s management or its employees is ready to own it. Ex-PIA CEO's decision to sell aircraft to German firm was a mistake: Sardar Mehtab PIA losses have surged to $4 billion, says PM's aviation advisor Abbasi said that the 'sale' of a PIA aircraft to a German museum ? a decision taken by the former German CEO of PIA Bernd Hildenbrand, was a "mistake." "Investigation into the 'sale' is still ongoing in Germany," the aviation adviser said, adding that the aircraft was sold along with its engine as well as other valuable machinery.
  10. The Indian cricket team has clearly dominated Pakistan in the ICC events overall. But in the Champions Trophy, Pakistan boasted of a 2-1 lead over their fierce rivals before eventually succumbing to a humiliating 124-run (D/L) loss on Sunday. While the game saw the Men in Blue improving their record against Pakistan, the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led didn't just squander their rare lead, but probably recorded their worst-ever performance in the recent times. Their bowlers, barring Mohammad Amir, were hammered all around the park. The fielding was far below international standards. And, their batting unit could only muster 164 runs in response to India's mammoth total of 319 runs. © Reuters On the day when their fans were expecting a spirited show from their team, the Pakistani side surely left everyone disappointed. The Pakistani cricketers also bore the brunt of their shambolic loss to India on social media platforms. So much so that Pakistani seamer Wahab Riaz took to Twitter and apologised for "letting down his nation and team". My performance has let down my nation n team, Im sorry sp to PCT fans. I tried my best but it was not good enough n I'm heart broken as well — Wahab Riaz (@WahabViki) June 7, 2017 "My performance has let down my nation n team, Im sorry sp to PCT fans. I tried my best but it was not good enough n I'm heartbroken as well," the 31-year-old paceman wrote on Twitter. The left-arm quick was smashed for 87 runs in just 8.4-wicketless overs against India. Repeatedly bowling too short and too wide, Wahab was struck for 11 fours and two sixes while conceding at 10.03 runs an over. © Reuters Pakistan's performance was widely castigated, with former cricketer Shahid Afridi coming out all guns blazing against Wahab, who was unable to complete his allocation of overs after suffering an ankle injury during the clash. "Wahab Riaz was once the spearhead of this bowling attack but his performance was a major let down on such an important occasion," Afridi wrote in a column for the ICC website. Apart from Afridi, Pakistani cricket fans were also vociferous in their criticism of Wahab. Despite a heartfelt apology from the seamer, the fans just couldn't forgive their bowler. we'll accept your apology if you promise us, you'll not play any ODI, ever again. #JabTakSoorajChandRahegaWahabBhaiKaNaamRahega — A. 11. LOS ANGELES: "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" proved an epic failure in its opening weekend, taking a calamitous $15.4 million in North America, data showed Monday, less than a tenth of its budget. Movies tend to make by far their biggest box office earnings in their opening weekend, often dropping by 50 percent the following week, meaning the revisionist saga directed by Guy Ritchie, 48, is doomed to be one of the flops of the year. Starring Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law, the lavish $175 Warner Bros. movie has an average rating of 4.6 out of 10 from more than 140 reviews collated by movie website Rotten Tomatoes. "To that hallowed list of great expensive follies -- ´John Carter,´ ´Ishtar,´ ´Heaven´s Gate´--let us ceremonially add another name: ´King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,´" said Nico Lang of Salon magazine. The epic´s global take was arguably worse, standing at a woeful $45 million by Monday morning from 51 markets, including a disappointing third-place opening in the lucrative Chinese box office. Ritchie—once seen as the whip-smart enfant terrible of British filmmaking -- announced himself on the scene with critically acclaimed crime capers "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" (1998) and "Snatch" (2000). He has struggled to maintain his early momentum, earning derision for 2002 romantic comedy "Swept Away," starring then-wife Madonna, while "Revolver" (2005) and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E," (2015) disappointed at the box office. The domestic performance landed "King Arthur" in third place in the weekend top 10, industry monitor Exhibitor Relations said. Comedy space romp "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" dropped 55 percent on its massive opening weekend in the United States and Canada, but still maintained its top spot with $65.3 million. The Marvel tale of a band of misfit space adventurers accounted for more than half of the cash hauled in by the 12 top-selling movies, placing it a long way ahead of second-placed Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn comedy vehicle "Snatched," which took $19.5 million. "The Fate of the Furious," the eighth part of the long-running Universal franchise, managed $5.4 million in the fifth week of a lucrative run that has seen it make $1.2 billion worldwide. Hanging on for fifth place was Disney blockbuster "Beauty and the Beast," starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, which hauled in another $4.8 million, taking it to nearly half a billion dollars in nine weeks. Rounding out the top 10 were: "The Boss Baby" ($4.5 million), "How to be a Latin Lover" ($3.9 million), "Lowriders" ($2.4 million), "The Circle" ($1.8 million), "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion" ($1.6 million)
