  1. Here’s some good news, finally. Giving us all a ray of hope, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said that a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19, may be ready by the end of 2020. © counterpoint research Well, if the development comes through, it would be nothing but a huge win for all of mankind that is going through such tumultuous times due to the coronavirus global health scare. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made this hopeful announcement in his closing remarks to the global agency’s executive board without revealing much detail. © WHO The comments from the WHO chief has come at a time when drugmakers and scientists all across the globe are racing against time to develop a safe, effective vaccine against COVID-19. “We will need vaccines and there is hope that by the end of this year we may have a vaccine. There is hope,” Tedros said in final remarks to the WHO's Executive Board, without elaborating. © Unsplash Meanwhile, the head of the WHO also called for solidarity and political commitment by all leaders to ensure equal distribution of vaccines as and when they become available. What can we expect? As per the report, nine experimental COVID-19 vaccines in various stages of clinical testing are part of the WHO’s COVAX global vaccine facility that aims to distribute 2 billion doses by the end of 2021. A total of 172 countries have joined the WHO’s COVAX initiative. However, some countries, including the US, Russia, and China have declined to join the facility to secure their own vaccines. © Unsplash The two-day board meeting, which examined the global response to the pandemic, heard calls from countries including Germany, Britain and Australia for reforms to strengthen the UN agency, the news agency reported. “We hope to get the real lessons that we can implement and prevent the same thing from happening. But I would like to assure you that WHO is ready to learn from this and change this organisation. During our transformation we promised this, we promised to keep change as a constant,” Tedros added, referring to his programme since taking the helm in 2017. © WHO COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc across the globe. So far, worldwide, at least 1,045,097 people have now lost their lives to this pandemic and as many as 35,537,050 cases have been registered. While several vaccine candidates against COVID-19 have reached the final testing stage, none has yet been approved for widespread use. We can only hope that the vaccine reaches out to each and everyone soon so that we can all resume our lives without having to worry about whether we will live or die the next day! 2. There was a time when the world of tennis was single-handedly dominated by the rivalry shared between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. It didn't matter who they played in a tournament, fans and pundits always knew that the duo would face each other in the final. And, the encapsulating trend continued for quite some time. But, just when Nadal and Federer were looking to leave other players behind, Novak Djokovic emerged to challenge their dominance. The Serbian didn't just force his way into the tennis world's top trio, he eventually managed to establish himself as the new champion in men's singles events. © Reuters Today, when the likes of Nadal and Federer, owing to their fragile bodies, are struggling to keep going, Djokovic is ranked no. 1 in the world on the back of sublime performances in recent years. And, it's not just his on-court performance, Djokovic has established himself as a unique character who can not only beat opponents at will, but can follow it up with his wit and humour in post-match press conferences. There was clearly nothing you'd see fans hating about Djokovic until the doomed year of 2020 came along. The 33-year-old found himself at the centre of a massive controversy during his ill-fated Adria Tour exhibition series. If the sight of Djokovic flouting social distancing rules during the Adria Tour raised questions on his demeanour, his antics at the US Open further added to his woes. Novak Djokovic has been defaulted from 2020 US Open. Lesson: -Staying calm is highly important even if you are already at the top -Never led your disappointment turn into Anger -Just a second of reaction has power to change your life for good or bad Courtesy: SM pic.twitter.com/IQ9WWYasRZ — Awanish Sharan (@AwanishSharan) September 7, 2020 His unwarranted antics, instigated by frustration, ended up hurting a female line judge, who dropped to her knees at the back of the court after the ball hit her on the neck, which further summed up the sorry state of the world champion in the past few months. But, it seems like 2020 isn't done with Djokovic just yet. As it turned out, Djokovic had another awkward moment of deja vu after he unintentionally struck another line judge, this time at the ongoing French Open tournament. The Serbian looked in ominous form at Roland Garros and, during his fourth-round clash, he breezed past Russia's Karen Khachanov with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win to seal his berth in the quarterfinals. Djokovic just sniped another line judge pic.twitter.com/QaEMWXNrBg — Gump Cathcart (@bubbagumpino) October 5, 2020 However, during his triumphant outing against Khachanov, Djokovic had a heart-in-the-mouth moment when he stretched for a forehand in the first set and the ball flew off his racquet before hitting the unsuspecting baseline judge, who was sitting nearby, in the head. For someone who was defaulted for somewhat similar actions at the US Open, Djokovic was, quite understandably, quick to check up on the official. "My gosh, it was very awkward deja vu. I'm actually trying to find the linesperson and see if he's okay because I saw he had a bit of a bruise, like redness, in that place in the head where the ball hit him. I hope he's fine. I mean, he definitely dealt with it in a very strong and brave way. But it was a hit because I was very close," the Serb was quoted as saying by the AFP. What’s this guy got against the side judges? — The All-Pro J.A.F.F.O.’s (@The_JAFFOsAP) October 5, 2020 "Obviously, because of what happened in New York, people I guess are going to make the story out of this. It has happened to me and to many other players in the last 15 years that I've been on the tour. I've seen it a lot when the ball ricochets from the racquet and the frame, hits someone in the stands, or someone that is close to you or the line umpire. Yeah, it was a very awkward situation," he added. Djokovic every time he takes the court now. pic.twitter.com/ZhSpZBS07p — Jared Flynn (@IBNFE_Jared) October 5, 2020 Well, his disqualification from the US Open after hitting the line judge remains the only defeat Djokovic has suffered all year. He is currently chasing a second title in Paris and an 18th career Grand Slam, as he waits for his quarterfinals opponent which will be decided after the match between Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta and unseeded German Daniel Altmaier. Lol this man is gonna kill someone with a tennis ball for God's sake — fulcilives (@acrochunis) October 5, 2020 Incidentally, Carreno Busta was the player who had benefited from Djokovic's US Open fourth round disqualification. And, we feel the Djoker will be eager to set the record straight this time around. But, no matter how Djokovic's French Open campaign turns out eventually, one thing is for sure, the Serb will be desperately waiting for the year 2020 to end, hoping his run-ins with trouble end with it. 4. On Sunday, actor Sonam Kapoor shared screenshots of multiple messages full of hate and abuse that she has been receiving on her Instagram account, on her Twitter handle. The 34-year-old actress disabled comments on her Instagram posts and trolls began sending her direct messages instead. She shared screenshots of some of the hateful comments that she has received with the caption, âThis is some of the comments coming my way. All the media and all the people whoâve encouraged this sort of behaviour and instigated it. This is on you. People talking about how one should have been kind to someone are doing worse to others.â Besides, she also stirred up a controversy on Twitter on Father's Day by saying that her privilege of being born as Anil Kapoor's daughter was "good karma". Today on Fatherâs Day id like to say one more thing, yes Iâm my fathers daughter and yes I am here because of him and yes Iâm privileged. Thatâs not an insult, my father has worked very hard to give me all of this. And it is my karma where Iâm born and to whom Iâm born. Iâm proud â Sonam K Ahuja (@sonamakapoor) June 21, 2020To be his daughter. â Sonam K Ahuja (@sonamakapoor) June 21, 2020Sonamâs reaction came in the wake of hate comments she has been receiving on social media, for the prevailing nepotism and favouritism in the industry, like several other celebrities including Salman Khan, Karan Johar and other star kids, following Sushant Singh Rajputâs sudden and tragic demise on June 14. However, people on the micro-blogging site were quick to remind the Neerja actress of how privileged she was and equally ignorant too. They gave her enough âgyaanâ on casteism as well. Check out some of the reactions here: Mahatma gandhi, Mother Teresa ,Florence Nightingle was also privilege people. Why shd privileges not earned on ones own account be worn like a badge. Karma is perhaps more the work we do not what our parents did ! Trust me throwing the privileged badge about is the last thing this country needs . â Richa Lakhera (@RICHA_LAKHERA) June 21, 2020They believe they deserve all privileges because they are high born. How is this not the worst form of casteism.. and to think star kids will find anything wrong with nepotism. â Akshay Deodhar (@DeodharAkshay) June 21, 2020It is high time these celebrities come out of their âsuperficialâ cocoon that blinds them from ground reality where people actually suffer to no measure because of being âless-privilegedâ. 5. The world hasnât ended yet! Now, donât know if thatâs good news or bad as most of us have been looking forward to it from the past many years. And every time a prediction is suggested, we look forward to that day all scared but then get disappointed. The Mayan Calendar had predicted that the end of the world is on June 21, 2020. A very similar prophecy by another calendar had suggested that the world will end on December 21, 2020. But, this time it felt like that this might happen as we are amidst a pandemic, we have seen cyclones, frequent earthquakes, and thought that the prediction might be true. But, none of the predictions were true and people on Twitter expressed their disappointment through memes and here we are now- very much alive. So, here we go- This is all of us right now. Mayan calendar conspiracy theorists who predicted the end of the world today: pic.twitter.com/nJ36AOnxF9 â Srishti Pandey (@TweetsofSrish) June 21, 2020 Ouch When i see world didn't end on 21st june and everyone is alive Le me to everyone: pic.twitter.com/Co6DnkpYSa â Oreo ka pyaaaar (@DuniyaKaunsi) June 21, 2020 Mayan Calendar had also predicted that the world would end on 21st December 2012 which later turned out to be a hoax. This time the theorists suggested that the date was wrong in 2012 and the world will end on June 21, 2020. This theory was explained by a scientist Paola Tagaloguin on Twitter. He wrote, âFollowing the Julian Calendar, we are technically in 2012. The number of days lost in a year due to the shift into the Gregorian Calendar is 11 days. For 268 years using the Gregorian Calendar (1752-2020) times 11 days = 2,948 days. 2,948 days / 365 days (per year) = 8 yearsâ. However, we all are very much alive and the world hasnât ended yet, and clearly, a few of us had given up and thought that this might happen. And now we are left with nothing but disappointment. Jokes apart, hope the pandemic ends soon and we can live a normal life! View the full article
  6. Excuse my language but 2020 really has been a sh*t show and we're just in the fourth month. Starting the year off with Australian bushfires and then the possibility of a third world war, and now we're all locked in our houses because there's a freaking pandemic happening. A lot of people were asking what worse could happen at this point? Well, we have an answer now. I mean, kinda. Wildfires have been spreading in Chernobyl since April 5th and have already engulfed 8,600 acres of land. Tens of thousands of firefighters are on the job trying to control the fire. There's another new concern now - the fire is reportedly getting dangerously close to the nuclear reactor, which exploded back in 1986. Apparently, Ukrainian officials have also discovered a huge radiation spike in the area where the first fires began. The levels of radiation are of course not nearly as high as they were during the explosion, but it's still a cause of concern and can pose a great risk to the residents of the country. Imagine dealing with a fire on top of coronavirus, especially in a place like Chernobyl. Looks like everything that can go wrong is actually going wrong. Not to be dramatic, but this honestly feels so apocalyptic and the end is near. Bingo! 8. Coronavirus has finally been given the status of a pandemic by the WHO (World Health Organisation), it is also officially an SOS alert on Google that can easily scare you with a single search result. However, the extremely communicable disease has been affecting us in very real ways in the past few weeks. With more corporate organisations declaring work from homes, and all major events like fashion weeks, Coachella cancelled, it's only going to get worse from here. The outbreak in the US, especially, has gotten worse to the extent that they're even cancelling NBA season, and have suspended all travel from Europe but more importantly, health organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US have released a comprehensive guideline for the beards that will be and won't be safe to grow in the coming weeks. Take a look at the chart here: The map points out which style of beard is more prone to catching the virus and which is relatively safer. This map eerily reminds us of the mandated hairstyles for the general population in North Korea. The people in North Korea can only choose among a handful of hairstyles mandated by the government, anything other than these is considered illegal. Here's one of the leaked images of the what the chart looks like: © Reuters However, this is definitely not similar in terms of the motives of this organisation. The CDC is constantly striving to come up with the health precautions to contain the novel Covid-19 as much as possible. Anyway, back to the diagram. It suggests that if you're wearing a surgical mask, your beard shouldn't cross the seal with your face. Moustaches and sideburns are fine if they stay on one side of the mask or another, but any hair that crosses the seal, even stubble, is not advisable. This means all beards are technically not safe. They've also given funny names to certain beards, in case you haven't noticed. 1. The 'Toothbrush Beard' is a safe beard. © Centers FOR Disease Control AND Prevention 2. 9. For a batsman who was busy hammering opposition bowlers all around the park and, in turn, shattering records at will last year, Virat Kohli, to the sheer frustration of Indian fans, is currently not at his prolific best with the willow. The right-hander had scored 5,775 more international runs than anyone else in the last decade. Last year alone, he had amassed 2,370 runs across formats - the fourth consecutive time he had aggregated 2000-plus runs in a single calendar year. But, this year has been a different story altogether. The so-called 'Indian run-machine' has looked a pale shadow of the world-class batsman he is generally celebrated as. And, his batting woes in the recently-concluded tour of New Zealand further dented his reputation as a modern-day great. © Twitter/@BCCI With scores of 45, 11, 38 and 11, Kohli ended the T20I series against the Kiwis without a fifty to his name. The much-awaited fifty did come in the 1st ODI where he scored 51 at Hamilton, but his cheap dismissals - 15 and 9 - in the next two matches continued to highlight his struggles with the willow. The Indian Captain would have definitely wanted to make amends with a better performance in the two-match Test series, but it wasn't meant to be. The 10-wicket loss at Wellington saw him registering scores of just 2 and 19 across two innings. And, he could only manage 3 and 14 over the course of two innings as India suffered a seven-wicket loss at Christchurch and a subsequent 2-0 Test series defeat. Amid immense criticism, Kohli ended the New Zealand tour with just 218 runs (across 4 T20Is, 3 ODIs and 2 Tests) to his name. © Reuters After enduring one of the worst tours of his otherwise decorated career, Kohli will be eager to silence the naysayers and return to form with a better performance against the visiting South African brigade for the three-match ODI series. But, apart from winning back the fans with a swashbuckling performance, Kohli will have an opportunity to enter the record books in the 1st ODI against South Africa. Taking the field at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium in Dharamsala on 12th March, the Indian captain will have a great opportunity to enter his name in the history books as only the sixth cricketer to reach 12,000 runs in ODI history. The Delhi lad is currently 133 runs away from achieving the milestone and entering the elite ODI list which also includes Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar. The Indian skipper, once he reaches 12,000 ODI runs, will become only the second Indian cricketer to achieve the feat. He will also be the fastest to achieve the milestone as other five batsmen including Tendulkar in the elite list took more than 300 innings to get there. When compared with them, Kohli has played just 239 innings so far, with a staggering 11,867 runs to his name. © Reuters While both Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri have publicly played down the importance of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Proteas owing to Team India's focus on World T20 in Australia this October, there is no doubt that Kohli will be eyeing it as an opportunity to hit back at his critics. Also, Kohli's men can ill-afford to lose another series, especially against an inexperienced South African brigade, buoyed with their crushing 3-0 win over Australia recently. The Indian captain will also be in a better headspace this time around with the return of their pivotal all-rounder Hardik Pandya to the side. Pandya proved his fitness on the back of a spectacular performance in the recently-concluded DY Patil T20 tournament. Apart from him, the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, too, will be seen returning in national colours to bolster the Indian side against dangerous-looking Proteas. View the full article

  11. At a time when love letters have turned into mushy BF/GF appreciation Posts, first sightings are made up of edited social media pictures, Matches are Artificial Intelligence-ly made, and all it takes for us to find âThe Oneâ (or the flavour of the season) is a right swipe on our phone screen - the rich essence of the good olâ love of the old days has gone amiss. Or has it? Maybe instead of vanishing away, romance has just changed its appearance, shifting along with every other change that modern society brings. Despite this evolution, thereâs a host of toxic behaviors that continue to show themselves in love - that you may have noticed with that less-than-ideal date from last weekend, or even a couple thatâs lasted for years. When the world goes offline, and the prying eyes of âfollowersâ are not to be found anywhere, and the âlikesâ are hard to come by, the face of modern-day love stories undergo a transformation that doesnât quite look like the love we grew up wishing for. Our writers have weighed in with their perspective on the how and what about the five things you definitely need to keep a check on when looking for romance - both big and small. Guilt-TrippingDevlina: âWe could have had a great time out if you didnât insist on attending your grandmaâs birthdayâ, âno wonder your ex left/hated thisâ, âI wonder how I ended up here with youâ - first off, these are HUGE red flags that you shouldnât be ignoring. If your partner has been using these sort of retorts to come back at you and guilt-trip you for doing something you want to/love to do, or holding you hostage emotionally for taking a stand and not siding with them, itâs time you remind them the relationship is not bigger than your individuality and voice. Sharan: I donât think itâs possible to have a relationship without guilt of some kind occuring every now and then - people are different, and sometimes a partner doesnât match up to our expectations (and vice versa). The problem for me arises when someone attempts to induce guilt on the basis of insecurity - say guilt-tripping me for spending time with a friend, instead of having an open and frank dialogue about their feelings. Ignoring Consent © Eros International Devlina: âHow could you say no to such a simple thingâ, âjust give it a try for meâ, âweâre doing this, whether you like it or notâ - if any of these ring a bell, chances are, your partner needs a refresher on âconsentâ. If they are making you feel bad for saying no, or forcing you to do something youâre not okay with or even checking your phone without your permission, these are all signs that they do not respect your right to say no or choose for yourself. That canât ever be healthy for a relationship. Sharan: While consent regarding *** and intimacy is a clear-cut requirement for any healthy relationship, I feel that it matters even on mundane things for a simple reason - practising consent implies respect and the knowledge that you earn a partnerâs trust and that youâre not simply entitled to it. Sure, sometimes we do things in relationships that weâre not particularly enthusiastic about, it happens. However, being vocal and taking the effort to confirm consent shows that you arenât in a relationship for your own desires - but for a shared experience with another human being. Forcing Them To Choose © UTV Motion Pictures Devlina: Again, this brings us to, âyou either spend your weekend with your family or meâ or âyou either stop doing that or weâre doneâ - choosing for you on your behalf and giving you senseless ultimatums clearly means your partner is coming from a place of selfish needs and narcissistic pleasure of getting the âupper handâ in the relationship - there is no place for this in loving relationships. Sharan: Yeah⦠this one is never fun. Could be a situation like forcing you to choose between groups of friends or even different sides of a family - giving someone a âdo what I want or weâre overâ line is at its best laughably childish, and at its worst, emotionally traumatising. Holding someone hostage in a relationship is a serious red flag, and I donât see any reason why someone should continue to stay - especially when relationships with people who care for you are at risk. Being A Control Freak Devlina: âWhy are you friends with her on Facebookâ, ââyou canât go to that party without meâ , âdonât take his/her callâ - if you have heard anything along these lines from your partner and are turning a blind eye to whatâs an obvious case of insecurity and jealousy, I suggest you pick your poison and get down to having that conversation about drawing the line when it comes to your personal space. Sharan: Itâs one thing to give constructive criticism as a partner, but an entirely different kind of issue when someone begins to control your freedom and choices as an individual. Itâs a hard line to draw as well - sometimes we just want to see our partners happy, and give into that pressure too often. However, if you find yourself constantly compromising on activities and personal choices such as your hobbies or interests, itâs time to speak up and reconsider things. You might be a partner, sure - but youâre an individual first. Playing The Blame GameDevlina: âYou forced me to take this extreme stepâ or âI wouldnât have done that if I werenât so angry at youâ - whether this brings back memories of angry outbursts, physical violence or emotional abuse, we suggest you come clear about how it's totally unacceptable and walk out the door for good. Man or woman, nobody deserves to go through this shit, no matter the âexcuseâ. Sharan: Weâve all seen the pattern before, either in real life or on TV - thereâs that one person who does something awful, and justifies it by seamlessly transferring the blame onto their partner. Classic example of adding insult to injury, huh? I think anyone who resorts to this instead of behaving like a normally functioning adult has some serious issues to unpack - and Iâm not sure if dealing with endless excuses sounds like my idea of a âfun relationship.â View the full article

  14. ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister of National Food Security and Research Khusro Bakhtiar said Sunday that the prevalent wheat crisis will be solved tomorrow (Monday). Bakhtiar was speaking during a press conference during which he said the crisis will be solved by Monday as the government currently had 4 million tonnes of wheat in its stock. He said that Sindh government's "late lifting" of the wheat from Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) had resulted in the artificial crisis taking place in the province. He said that the transport strike in the province made matters worse. "Sindh did not even procure a grain of wheat this year whereas their target was 700,000 tonnes," he said. "The NLC has gave 9,000 tonnes of wheat to the Sindh government only for Karachi. Today, they will provide 10,000 tonnes [of wheat]. "Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government was receiving 2,000 tonnes of wheat daily while Sindh was only lifting 150 tonnes," he added. Speaking about the flour crisis in KP, Bakhtiar said the Punjab government's food department noticed that wheat was being provided to KP "more than the necessary amount" saying that as checks and balances were introduced by the provincial government, it led to a "suspension in the supply chain". The federal minister said as flour mills open from Monday, wheat prices will start declining. He said about 40,000 metric tons of wheat were smuggled to Afghanistan per month and special measures were also made to check this smuggling to keep the supply smooth in local markets. Bakhtiar said a special helpline was also established to monitor the wheat supply in local markets and wheat procurement targets were also enhanced from six million tons to eight million tons to keep the strategic reserves for local requirements. To a question, he said incumbent government has attached higher priorities with the agriculture sector and initiated development projects worth Rs 300 billion to enhance the output of major crops including wheat.
  15. Not all movies that are deep in nature need to end on a sad note. Catharsis is sure a brilliant literary device which many movies use brilliantly as they make the audience cry and feel bad for the protagonist, but some sad movies do have a happy ending. Here are 5 movies which have a sob story but do end on a happy note. 1. Room A heartbreaking, life-affirming movie which follows the story of a mother and her young kid who, after years of confinement in a small room, manage to taste freedom. The movie makes you feel claustrophobic, sad and just uneasy at the same time but the ending gives you hope. 2. Masoom If this movie has not given you âthem feelsâ and made you drop a tear or two, then I donât know what else can or will. A small boy looking for his father and wanting to be accepted in a family he loves is what this movie is about. The movie will make you question how life can sometimes be cruel but the ending reminds you that eventually good things happen to good people. 3. Shawshank Redemption It is one of the best movies of all time and once you watch it, you will understand why. The story is based on a banker who is sentenced to life imprisonmetnt after being accused of murdering his wife and her lover. The ending with Red and Andy being together explains that when we think life has nothing to offer, it often surprises us with something much bigger. 4. Kabir Singh One of the most controversial movies of 2019 but also a sad one if one may call it. A bright doctor takes the help of alcoholism as a coping mechanism for his lost love. While the character is problematic in parts, one does feel sorry for his sad and traumatic state. When the two unite in the end, one does feel happy for them. True love does exist. 5. Tamasha Trust Imtiaz Ali to express emotions and show anyoneâs sentiments like no one else can make that happen. Two people trying to make a relationship work with different views in life. 17. LAHORE: All Pakistan Transport Owners Federation (APTOF) on Thursday announced an end to the countrywide strike after successful negotiations were held with Punjab Governor Chaudhry Ghulam Sarwar who assured them that their issues will be resolved by the month's end. After a meeting was held between members of the transport alliance and the provincial government during which Sarwar convinced transporters that their issues will be resolved by January 31, the APTOF said they were ending the countrywide strike. The transporters went on strike today (Thursday) after the government announced imposition of heavy fines on violation of rules and regulations. Last year in November, the Federal Cabinet had given approval for a massive increase in fines on highways and motorways. An eight-member committee comprising representatives from the government and the transport alliance have been formed to solve the crisis that was caused by the government's act of imposition of heavy fines. Sarwar announced the release of all drivers and conductors who were arrested by police. "We are ending the strike after being given assurances [that the crisis will be solved] by the governor," he said. "We hope our problems will be solved soon." The government had decided to increase the fine which was Rs750 across the board for every violation to Rs1,500 for motorbikes found guilty of overspeeding, Rs2,500 for cars, Rs5,000 for trucks and Rs10,000 for public service vehicles, according to a report. Other fines included Rs1,500 if motorcycles and cars were found to be overtaking other vehicles. While those car drivers and motorcyclists who are found taking a wrong U-turn would have had to pay Rs1,000, while heavy vehicles would have been fined Rs3,000. Federal Minister for Communications and Postal Services Murad Saeed had announced in parliament that the government had taken back the decision to impose heavy fines after the strike. Murad had said the government had taken the decision to bring down the number of accidents to 50 percent.
  18. âFloat like a butterfly, sting like a bee,â although this phrase was introduced to us by the all-time great Muhammad Ali, it is also the best way to describe the now 46-year-old Leander Paes - humble in his words, so joyous to talk to, and full of experience at the top level. I first met the star at a sports award show a couple of years ago. He was being honoured with the âLifetime Achievementâ award for a professional career spanning 29 years. 29 years of winning everything there was to win. Eight doubles and ten mixed doubles Grand Slams including the historic 6â7, 6â3, 6â4, 7â6 win with partner Mahesh Bhupathi at the 1999 Wimbledon final and Paes will still greet you with so much warmth and affection and will always be the first to introduce himself, as if the world did not know who he was. If you get the opportunity to be in the legendâs vicinity when he is talking about his parents and how they created a sense of discipline in his life, consider yourself to be lucky. The way Paes articulates even the smallest of the details of his journey, the way he talks about the most important episodes of his life with a smile on his face will make you admire how unique yet how humble this athlete is. He may not be the skinniest guy on the court, heâd definitely not be the most athletic either , but the man covered all of it up with his heart. He will burn himself out to chase the farthest of shots. Every point mattered the same to him and nothing seemed to be impossible until the ball bounced twice. âIn the semis I meet Leander Paes, from India. Heâs a flying jumping bean, a bundle of hyperkinetic energy, with the tourâs quickest hands. Still, heâs never learned to hit a tennis ball. He hits off-speed, hacks, chips, lobs â heâs the Brad of Bombay. Then, behind all his junk, he flies to the net, covers so well that it seems to work. After an hour, you feel as if he hasnât hit one ball cleanly â and yet heâs beating you soundly. Because Iâm prepared, I stay patient, stay calm, and beat Paes 7-6 6-3.â This is how former world No. 1 and all-time great, Andre Agassi described his first encounter with a then 23-year-old Paes in the semi-final of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. âHe hit like maybe 25 drop shots. Thatâs strange. But just because he plays strange doesnât mean itâs not good. Itâs just strange,â Agassi added. Iâll never get over this day. Just another boy who believed he could. But it took a LOT more than just belief. Look Dada, now we can finally sit on the same table as two Olympic champions I earned that for you, me, for our people and for our country. It feels GOOD pic.twitter.com/y9AHyM87JZ â Leander Paes (@Leander) August 3, 2019 It was also during the same tournament that Agassiâs father Mike told Dr Vece Paes (Leanderâs dad): âAmazing. My boy is supposed to play well, but your boy has been playing this week like a Top 4 player.â Courage and the will to take on the most renowned tennis superstars of the world is what the story of Paesâ career is all about. #OneLastRoar pic.twitter.com/WwALCVF5LO â Leander Paes (@Leander) December 25, 2019 And now that the Calcuttan has decided to have that âone last roarâ before saying goodbye to the sport, there is nothing but immense pride and honour in the hearts of his people. There is no greater way to sign off than this. This is the legacy of Leander Paes, and it is as magnanimous as he is. View the full article
  19. MOSCOW: Russia and Japan´s foreign ministers met on Thursday to try and find a solution to a territorial dispute that has prevented them from signing a formal WWII peace treaty. The Soviet Union seized the strategically located volcanic archipelago north of Japan´s Hokkaido in the final days of World War II and has maintained a military presence there ever since. It´s the third time in four months that Russia´s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Japanese counterpart Toshimutsu Motegi have met. "The talks were constructive and substantial," said Lavrov after a meeting with his Japanese counterpart in Moscow. Atsushi Kaifu, a spokesman from Japan´s foreign ministry, said the discussions lasted for about five hours and focused on the peace treaty. "It was an intense and fruitful discussion," he said, adding, the foreign ministers would meet again on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in February. Called the Kuril islands by Russia and the Northern Territories by Japan, talks to resolve the disputed territory stalled for decades due to Japan´s claim to the four strategic islands seized by the Soviet army in the final days of the war. The islands´ current population is around 20,000 people. Russia has had military bases on the archipelago since WWII and has deployed missile systems on the islands. President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have met many times to try to find a way to break the impasse. The pair have discussed joint economic activity in the region. "The most important thing is that we want to find a solution," Putin said on Thursday during his annual press conference, praising "trusting relations" with Tokyo. But he questioned if a solution could be found to appease public opinion in both countries.
  20. The 13th edition of the South Asian Games ended on a high for the Indian contingent that broke their own record in medal tally with 312 medals against the other nations of the region like Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. With 174 golds, 93 silvers and 45 bronze earned between December 1 and December 10, Team India maintained their top-level stature in the regional games ever since its inception back in 1984. India sets new record! India create a new record at the #SouthAsianGames with as they reach 312 medals, three more than their tally in 2016. India won 174 golds, 93 silver and 45 bronze medals. Sure, the overall medal tally went up since 2016 but the number of gold medals between 2016 and 2019 has depreciated by 15. Another important aspect of the 2019 South Asian Games is that this edition had 75 more medal events offering 225 medals more than the previous edition. So, when you look at the percentage of India's medal earnings this year, it has gone down by approximately 10 percent. This turns out to become a bigger cause of worry for the Indian sports fraternity especially as the 2020 Olympics, which is to be held in Tokyo, is just eight months away. If we have learnt anything from our past it is that regardless of how many miles ahead of competition India has been in the South Asian region in sports, we have always ended up disappointed at the greatest stage of them all. © Reuters If we are letting our dominance at the regional level fade away too, well then, where does that make us stand on a global level? “I will not take names but if an Indian athlete, who comes from a very humble background, is given crores of rupees for winning one Asia-level medal, why would they want to put their body through the torture of daily practice for higher levels of competition,” Divesh Bhal, an Athletics Federation of India official, had told MensXP in September. “Sometimes, they lose motivation (after winning an Asia-level medal) and it happens too much within Indian athletics," he said. And this happens every single time. Once an athlete wins a medal at the Asian or South Asian level, the hunger to win an Olympic gold somehow dies off and that's the mentality that makes us fail to bring podium finishes, much less a gold medal.
