The Karnataka government has asked IT firms in Bengaluru to extend the work from home policy till the end of the year. While you may think this might be related to the pandemic, the actual reason is entirely different. The Karnataka government has asked IT companies with offices on Outer Ring Road (ORR) or Bengaluru’s IT corridor to extend work from home till the end of December 2022 so that they can work on the Metro rail construction. The request comes from the department of information technology, biotechnology, science & technology as the soon-to-be initiated Metro rail construction from Silk Board to KR Puram is about to begin. The metro line will go all the way to the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). © Unsplash/jonathan-kemper “We would like to bring to your notice that BMRCL (Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited) is starting metro construction works on Outer Ring Road (ORR) from Central Silk Board to KR Puram and the construction of the same could extend to about 1.5 to 2 years. The ORR houses many large Tech Parks and IT company campuses and carries [a] large amount of traffic throughout the day. The ORR, despite having 6 lanes and service roads, is infamous for its perennial traffic congestion,” EV Ramanna Reddy, the additional chief secretary, IT/BT, S&T department said in his letter to the regional director of NASSCOM. © Reuters IT firms in Bengaluru were amongst the first companies in India to implement work from home policies when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in the country. However, many of the companies are planning to resume office in the wake of reduced COVID-19 cases in India. However, the department argues that extending WFH till the end of the year will ultimately benefit IT companies. “IT companies especially located in ORR, would extend the work from home option for most of the employees till December 2022, and/or the IT parks/companies may be advised to stagger the working hours for those employees working physically at office.” © Unsplash/firos nv The department also requested companies that wish to resume working from office to ask their workers to use company or public buses to reduce the congestion. "We request you to circulate this advisory to IT companies located on ORR so that infrastructure development activities are carried out smoothly, which would also ease out traffic congestion in future,” Reddy said.
