  1. Rishabh Pant is an exciting character and he is someone that Test cricket desperately needs, according to former England skipper Michael Vaughan. The wicket-keeper batter was under fire for poor shot selection in the ongoing tour of South Africa. Pant had scores of 8,34,17,0 and 27 before Thursday. The 24-year-old walked out to bat with India in a tricky situation in the Test series decider after losing Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in quick succession early on Day 3. Cricket needs players like @RishabhPant17 !! This is a serious knock .. #SAvsIND — Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) January 13, 2022 He played a thrilling knock to stitch a 94-run stand with captain Virat Kohli to bail India out of trouble. During his knock, Pant took a special liking to Keshav Maharaj and he smashed the South Africa spinner to all parts of the ground. The rest of the Indian batters 70 runs Rishabh Pant 100* What a knock Watch #SAvIND live on https://t.co/CPDKNxpgZ3 (in select regions)#WTC23 | https://t.co/Wbb1FE2mW1 pic.twitter.com/cj8oyz7Dsl — ICC (@ICC) January 13, 2022 After the Lunch interval on Day 3, Pant slammed two consecutive maximums off Maharaj. The first one was a trademark one-handed slog from the left-hander but the other one went deep into the stands and left the South African fielders searching for the ball in the stands. Another six and we can stop on shaved spinners vs Pant conspiracy — Baroon Varma Барун Варма (@BaroonV) January 13, 2022Pant didn't stop there as he went on to score an outstanding century to become the only wicket-keeper batter from India to score a Test hundred in Australia, England and South Africa. Pant's knock was laced with six boundaries and four big hits that went over the ropes. It was not the first time when Pant came to the party in a crucial Test match for the team. View this post on Instagram He was the wrecker-in-chief when India managed to get the better of Australia in Gabba last year. Known for his unorthodox approach to batting, this is what you expect from someone like Pant -- counter-attack cricket. With this knock, Pant helped India set South Africa a target of 211 in the series decider. We believe the cricket pundits will leave him alone for some time now after one of the best innings that an Indian batter has played in South Africa. View the full article
  2. With 40 matches already played in the tournament so far, the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed almost everything. From the controversial 'Mankading' episode, brilliant batting performances to majestic bowling spells, there has been no shortage of excitement or entertainment in the ongoing season. But, while many players have garnered praise for their exploits on the field, some have been laughed upon for their mediocre show. The likes of Stuart Binny and Ben Stokes became the latest addition to the latter list. During Delhi Capitals' six-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals, both Binny and Stokes found themselves entangled in a comedy of errors which, in turn, made them the butt of all jokes on the social media. Chasing a tricky total of 191 runs, Delhi needed 17 runs off 12 balls with Rishabh Pant and Colin Ingram at the crease. On the fourth delivery of Jofra Archer's over, Pant went for a tennis-like cross-court swat by could only manage to lob the ball in the air towards square leg. With the ball landing safely, Pant surely got away with his erratic shot, but what followed later was nothing short of a comedy show. https://t.co/xAp3LHNNmg — Cricket Junkie (@JunkieCricket) April 23, 2019 Guarding the square-leg boundary, Binny came running in to field the ball, but rather than collecting it, he ended up misjudging the spin on it before getting wrong-footed. With Binny down on the ground, Stokes tried to save his side the blushes by chasing the ball and sliding to collect it. But the Englishman couldn't control it in his hands as the ball wriggled free of his grasp right at the moment he was positioning himself to fire in a throw. What ideally should have been a single, eventually resulted in three key runs for Delhi. Following the comedy of errors, Stokes was seen slapping his leg in disappointment and sporting a sheepish smile. The incident attracted all sorts of reactions from the cricket fans on the social media, with many labelling Binny and Stokes as the "original comedy duo". pmsl Stuart Binny and Ben Stokes. the original comedy duo — The Big Show (@ravi_layer) April 22, 2019 Stuart Binny: Yeh karke dikhao. 3. Ever since the advent of cricket, slip cordon is one of the most traditional and important fielding positions in the game. The name 'slip' is supposedly derived from the time when the fielders started standing next to the wicket-keeper in anticipation of any slip (mistake) from the batsman. Whether it's a Test match, an ODI or even a T20, slip fielders can always be seen stationed during the passages of play. One of the most-important wicket-fetching regions, it is an attacking position where the fielding side rather than saving runs, aims to force an error from the batsman at the crease. While it has served as a great medium to get consistent breakthroughs in the game, the placement of slips (floating slip) and the number of fielders have also left the fans and experts in splits in the past. Depending on the format and, more importantly, the situation in the game, a fielding side is generally seen deploying three or four fielders in the slip cordon. But, with the option of having as much as nine fielders in the slip cordon, there have been occasions when the teams have been seen using more than just four players in the said position. A similar incident was recorded back in 1977 when Dennis Lillee used all nine players in the slips during Australia's clash against New Zealand. And then, in 1999 during the ODI between Australia and Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club, Steve Waugh decided to try his mental disintegration by packing the slips with nine fielders - a classic case of ruthless extermination. Those incidents marked a rare sight in cricket, not just for the fans, but also for the cricket pundits. Now, fast-forward to 17 October, and the rare, but no longer unknown, sight is back in cricket. In a Group D encounter of the Ranji Trophy, Bengal crushed Chhattisgarh by an innings and 160 runs. From Bengal seamer Ashok Dinda's 100th first-class game to Mohammad Shami's majestic spell, there were a lot of memorable moments in the game. But, nothing managed to excite the fans as much as the portrait of nine fielders in Bengal's slip cordon did. What a treat to watch Dinda & Shami bowl in tandem pic.twitter.com/caWabOOnnb — JOYDEEP MUKHERJEE (@joydeepfive) October 17, 2017 With Bengal just one wicket away from victory, skipper Manoj Tiwary placed nine fielder in the slips with Dinda and Shami bowling in tandem. The unique sight brought back the memories of 1977 and 1999 games where the Aussies did the same. And, after Joydeep Mukherjee (Cricket Association of Bengal's director for cricket) tweeted an image of the unique sight, some fans just couldn't contain their excitement before sharing their views.
