  7. New Zealand, a small country with a population of just over 51 lakh, has always been known to punch above their weight but never had nothing to show for all their efforts. They came close to conquering the world twice in the last two editions of the ODI World Cup but fell short in the final on both occasions, losing out to Australia and England in 2015 and 2019 respectively. Despite major heartbreaks, one thing that this small island nation always had in abundance was belief -- belief in their individual skill-sets and belief in each other’s abilities -- and with this belief they took on the star-studded Indian team in the World Test Championship final and etched their name in history books, becoming the first-ever World Test champions. © Twitter ICC In the last two years, the Kiwis were one of the most consistent sides in world cricket and were the first ones to qualify for the WTC final. For a nation like New Zealand, a powerhouse in rugby, qualifying for the final was a no mean feat. But the players knew deep down that a mere final appearance was not enough for them to inspire the next generation to pick cricket over rugby and establish themselves as a major force to reckon with. Hence, the Kane Williamson-led side was ready to do whatever it took to materialize its dream of conquering the world and there were several instances in the last two years which proved the players were ready to cross the final hurdle this time around. Who better to hit the winning runs than the @BLACKCAPS’ greatest ever Test run-scorer, Ross Taylor? Inside the winning moment and trophy presentation #WTC21 pic.twitter.com/mvu5Ed5MaC — ICC (@ICC) June 23, 2021 The players knew what was on the line and they always stood up to help their team, even if it meant giving their blood and sweat on the field. In December last year, the Blackcaps were playing a home Test series against Pakistan. Riding on Williamson’s gritty hundred, the hosts won the game quite comfortably but more than his knock it was Neil Wagner who stole all the limelight and he deserved every bit of praise that came his way. © Reuters During the first innings, Wagner faced a heavy blow and was left with two broken toes and it’s a well-known fact that it’s very difficult for a bowler, that too a pacer, to bowl with an injury to his leg because the pain involved is just too much. But Wagner didn’t care about his injury, all he cared about was his team and bowled with great grit and determination and picked up four wickets, battling excruciating pain. In the first innings he bowled 21 overs, while in the second innings he bowled 28 overs -- most by any bowler in his team. He also bowled a marathon 11-over spell in which he dismissed Pakistan’s centurion Fawad Alam, paving a way to their 101-run win. © Twitter Delhi Capitals Another instance that became symbolic of New Zealand players’ resilience occurred in the WTC final itself, when wicketkeeper BJ Watling, playing the last Test match of his career, dislocated his right ring finger during India’s first innings but still kept wickets throughout the match and took five important catches in the game. BJ Watling dislocated his right ring finger in the first session and has received medical treatment during the lunch break before returning to the field. #WTC21 pic.twitter.com/740pwb8MVs — BLACKCAPS (@BLACKCAPS) June 23, 2021 New Zealand, regarded as the ‘good guys’ of the game, stuck to their popular tag but also showed that it is possible to be aggressive and humble at the same time. In this day and age when cricket is becoming more about flamboyance, watching the Kiwis go about their business always feels like a breath of fresh air and we all hope that this WTC title is just the beginning of a new era and long may it continue. 8. After playing in the first innings of the fourth Test between India and England at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, opener Rohit Sharma became the highest scoring batsman of the ongoing series. Finding himself in great form throughout the red-ball series at home, Sharma managed to stick to the crease for the first 50 overs of the Indian innings despite losing one partner after the other on the other side of the pitch. View this post on Instagram Playing a bit slower than his usual aggressive self, Sharma was standing at 49 runs off 143 deliveries and was looking to sneak a single against Ben Stokes when an LBW appeal was made against him on the final delivery of the 50th over. At this point of time, fans of the Indian cricket team and those of the ‘Hitman’, were holding their breath, hoping that umpire Nitin Menon would somehow resist himself from raising his index to show the way out to the Indian batsman. Rohit Sharma was unlucky, two of them were based on umpires call - A classic patient knock from Hitman when things were difficult. — Johns. (@CricCrazyJohns) March 5, 2021 However, Menon did nod to the appeal and declare Sharma out. The only thing that could help Sharma keep his wish of getting the half-ton alive was the option of going for a DRS review - something that has proven to be virtually useless against the officiating brilliance of Menon in this series. Nonetheless, Sharma chose to review the decision and even came close to keeping his wicket but since the umpire had already declared him out, the benefit of the doubt went to the bowling side and the Indian batsman’s 50 remained unfulfilled. Nitin Menon lvdkbl.. Control thatt finger — What's in a name? (@Hramblings) March 5, 2021Nitin menon is like old Steve Buckner..raising his finger whenever there is appeal against india batsman. When same decisions against india bowlers he was hesitant to give out n it turned to be Umpires call. @BCCI pls don't take him in india matches ever. #INDvENG @bhogleharsha — Sree (@coolsreez) March 5, 2021Nitin Menon doesn't even take a second before raising the finger for Indian batters @BCCI In close umpire calls, his decision is always against Indian team @imVkohli @SrBachchan — B.Saubhik (@Saubhik27) March 5, 2021@englandcricket have been so lucky with Umpires Call through out this series. When Batting, not given out on Umpires Call and while bowling, the umpire raises the finger on Umpires Call.Should thank Indian Umpires specially Nitin Menon @BCCI #INDvsENG @bhogleharsha @MichaelVaughan — Apoorv Johri (@ApoorvJohri2) March 5, 2021Barring a few questionable decisions with very small margin of error, Nitin Menon has been on-point in his calls, especially when it comes to the spinners and that too on a pitch as tricky as the Motera turf. Nitin Menon gets one wrong & the batsman who reviews correctly is @ashwinravi99 #INDvsENG — Shankar Ram Annur (@arshankarram) March 5, 2021 In the fourth and final match of the series, the only review that has gone against the official so far was when he declared Ravichandran Ashwin out in the 54th over when Stokes appealed for a caught-behind. Menon thought that the ball had hit the bat on the top edge but an immediate (and rather angry) review by Ashwin cleared that that was not the case. View the full article
  9. The final day of the Gabba Test at the Brisbane Cricket Ground continues to be ruthless to the limping Team India and this time around, it is the top order red-ball specialist, Cheteshwar Pujara who’ll have the bruises to show off at the end of the series. By the second session of Day 5 of the final Test alone, the veteran has already suffered at least three nasty blows to his head, including a bouncer by pacer Josh Hazlewood that ended up knocking off a piece of the batsman’s helmet. The ball after Pujara pulls away at the final second because of a butterfly, Hazlewood asks if his vision was still impaired. Caring stuff from the big quick pic.twitter.com/e48z1xd6dd — Nick Toovey (@OneTooves) January 19, 2021 This injury came only a couple of overs after Pujara found himself in agonising pain as yet another Hazlewood delivery struck him on the gloves and bounced off as if it had impacted against concrete. The 32-year-old instantly knew that something was wrong with his hand as he turned around, threw the bat on the ground, removed his helmet and gloves and crashed on the ground. Ouch! Pujara rips his glove off after copping one flush on the glove! Live #AUSvIND: https://t.co/qvYTMSiZsl pic.twitter.com/xXLuC0jcEa — cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) January 19, 2021 It is also being speculated that the injury could have been on the very same finger Pujara had hurt in the nets ahead of the Sydney Test that had fueled the conversation over his fitness to keep playing for the rest of the series. To be fair, the Australian bowlers are not a hundred percent to be blamed for all the injuries that the Indian batsman is incurring. If one needs to point a finger at someone or something, it has to be towards the massive cracks filling the Gabba pitch causing extremely uneven bounce, making it difficult for Pujara to predict the trajectory of the ball. The only explanation for Pujara getting hit this often is that he doesn't trust the bounce and hence is trying not to play with his bat. — MJ (@freehit_mj) January 19, 2021 Despite all the pain and the obvious jitters that come along with the strike that his body takes, Pujara has been a pillar of strength for the Men in Blue in the first two sessions of the final day. After 58 overs, his individual score read 43 off an 160 deliveries and is the anchor that’s holding Team India’s hopes of maybe even winning the series for the second consecutive time. Fans have acknowledged the brave cricketer’s contribution towards the team’s grind in keeping the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with themselves. Ah Pujara! How the HELL is he still standing??? #AUSvIND — Melinda Farrell (@melindafarrell) January 19, 2021So plan is Crystal clear. Pujara is standing like strong wall of Ambuja cement and other player will go for win if there is any chance to. #AUSvIND — Lalit Thakur (@lalitthakur41) January 19, 2021Always thought Pujara plays too slow.. but today this man fighting like a Tiger. Ball continuously hitting the body but #CheteshwarPujara standing like a solid wall. Playing for country. That determination in his eyes. Well done #Pujara. #AUSvIND — Paresh Rawal fan (@Babu_Bhaiyaa) January 19, 2021Pujara ️ Standing still. #AUSvsIND — Abhigyan (@o7gyan) January 19, 2021 View the full article

  11. Throwing a memorable party is like doing a high-intensity workout. It’s exhausting but it’s also fun and rewarding. Watching your peeps enjoy conversations and your perfectly-set finger food with warming winter cocktails is a sight to behold. Isn’t it?! When we think of food and drinks during winter, our mind naturally turns to hot pakoras and chai. Makes sense. It’s cold outside. But at a fall party, this evergreen combo will go cold before your guests can sneak a taste. So we say go for the combination of finger food that can keep your body warm from the inside and a cocktail that feels like a fur jacket in a mug. __ECOMLOOKS__1970__ __ECOMLOOKS__1971__ __ECOMLOOKS__1972__ __ECOMLOOKS__1973__ __ECOMLOOKS__1974__ The BottomlineMake your finger food more flavourful by adding herbs like rosemary, oregano and garlic powder but watch the amount of salt and cayenne pepper you add to your snacks. Subtle flavours will keep your food from overpowering the taste of cocktails. Explore More View the full article
