ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has promised to take stern action against hoarders and profiteers responsible for the wheat flour crisis in the country, said Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan on Sunday. “Prime minister will defeat profiteers and those who are hoarding flour,” she said, adding that the premier had made a promise to take stern action against those responsible for the wheat crisis and he will ensure that that promise is fulfilled. Awan said Prime Minister Imran had allocated Rs6 billion for utility stores via a special package due to which flour, pulses, and rice will be available for the common man at low rates. The statement from the prime minister’s aide comes at a time when the flour crisis has gripped the nation, making life difficult for masses around the country. Read more: Food security ministry rejects reports of wheat shortage in Pakistan Flour prices have skyrocketed across the country in recent days, selling for as high as Rs62 per kilogram at several retail stores. The PPP and the PML-N have blamed the government for the crisis. The price of the flour has increased by five rupees in just the last week due to a shortage of wheat supply. “Fine flour is available for Rs62/kg while the price of mill flour increased by five to six rupees and is being sold between Rs 62/kg to Rs70/kg,” the president of the flour retailers association had told Geo News. In Karachi, a sack of flour was being sold for Rs500 a couple of days ago. In some parts of the city, a bag of 10kg flour which cost Rs450 before the crisis was being sold for Rs700 after an increase of Rs250. In Lahore, the Punjab Flour Mill Association increased the price of flour by Rs6 per kg, after which it was being sold at Rs70 per kg across the province. KARACHI: Sindh government has procured 300,000 tonnes of wheat from the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) — of which 70,000 had been brought to the metropolis, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said Sunday. In a statement from the CM House, it was confirmed that the provincial government had procured the PASSCO wheat from Balochistan and Punjab. The delay was caused due to the transporters' strike. The CM said his government had hired the National Logistic Cell's (NLC) services, which mobilised a 200-vehicle fleet to transport the wheat from Punjab and Balochistan to Karachi and Hyderabad. He added that 70,000 bags had arrived in the city so far and that another 30,000 bags were to be brought in by Monday evening. Shah directed the food department secretary, Laiq Ahmed, to personally monitor wheat-lifting from Punjab and Balochistan and start issuing wheat to the flour mills in line with the government policy. Shah also directed the Bureau of Supply & Prices to play their due role to stabilise flour prices all over Sindh, particularly in Karachi and Hyderabad. Further, through his chief secretary, he also directed all deputy commissioners to control the artificial price hike in their respective areas, particularly of the flour. The CM directed the food department to avert the wheat crisis within the next two days.

Flour mill boiler explodes into fireball in Karachi's Nazimabad: authorities

Emergency services respond to a fire that erupted at a flour mill in the Nazimabad locale of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, November 21, 2017. Geo.tv/Qamar Ali KARACHI: Fire erupted at a flour factory late Monday night here in the metropolis' Nazmiabad area when a boiler exploded, engulfing the building's entire top floor in flames. There was no labourer inside the building ? a two-storey structure ? at the time of the blaze, emergency services explained, adding that the boiler is located on its rooftop. Six fire tenders and at least 18 firefighters are currently engaged in trying to bring under control and douse the fire. The fire spread through the top floor when the boiler exploded at around 2:45 AM PST local time, prompting emergency services authorities to be called to the scene immediately. While the flames rage on an hour later, the fire is expected to be brought under control shortly.
