However, while it's much more hassle-free than joining a gym, it still requires more than a pair of running shoes and a willingness to sweat. To really get the most out of running regularly, there are a few things you need to know about before you even take your first stride. So, to help you adopt and stick to this healthy lifestyle change, here are a few basic tips that will help you kick-start your journey the right way, stay on track, and reap the rewards when you do get out there: 1. It could be a race you want to participate in, such as a marathon or a sprint. It could even be a specific time you want to beat or a particular distance you want to master. However, you would agree with me that majority of the people who follow fitness religiously, prefer winters to bulk up and for summers to cut down. So, today let me tell you the only 3 tips that you need to follow for 'The Winter Bulk'. 1) Count Your Macros © Pinterest Yes, you can't get away with this. Just because you are bulking, it doesn't mean that you will add any random food item that comes your way into your diet. People who do so, are the ones who complain of adding too much fat during their bulk. The purpose is to gain muscle mass with minimum fat gain. Now, there are various methods to calculate your calorie intake, but this time, I will give you a very simple formula. Take your weight in pounds and multiply it with 18. For example, if you weight 70Kgs which is approximately 154lb, then your calorie intake will be 154 multiplied by 18 which is equal to 2772. Now, I am not saying that this is the most scientific way to calculate the required calories but I know that a majority of you won't make any efforts to make the calculation, if I gave you a complicated equation. You will atleast get a rough idea of your calorie intake through this simple method. 2) Choose Your Macros Wisely © Thinkstock Now, when have you the calorie calculations in your hand, you need to find out how much of each macro you need to have and what will be the source of each macro. First, let's talk about protein, as protein is the macronutrient that's going to help you build muscles. I am going to take an upper limit here which would be taking per gram protein per pound of body weight. So that would come down to approximately 154gms of protein. The calories that will come from protein will be 154x4=616. Now let's calculate the fat intake. Take one gram of fat per kg of weight. In our example, that would come down to 70gms of fat. Calories from fat will be 70x9=630. Now, the left over calories 2772(Total) – 616(Protein)+630(Fat)=1526 will come from carbs. Since a gram of carb has 4 calories, the total grams of carbs will be 1526/4= 381. The overall macro ratio of carbs, protein and fat will be approx 55:22:22, which is a good ratio for gaining muscles. A good source of carbs will be the ones that have a low GI and are carb-dense like sweet potato, oats, brown rice, chapati, quinoa, beans, whole wheat bread and pasta. Lean source of protein include chicken, eggs, tofu, whey protein, milk etc. Fat can come from nuts, nuts butter, olive oil and coconut oil, cheese etc. 3) Progressive Overload Training © Pixabay You will hear lots of stuff about the reps that you should be performing in a set to gain muscles. I am not going to get into the details of those, but I am just going to suggest you a rep range that will help you to gain muscles. You can't measure the exact number or reps that will give you the best results, but you can definitely follow a rep range to gain muscles. I recommend a rep range of 6 to 8 reps with progression overload. Progression overload means that you add certain amount of weight every week in your lifts to create that stimulus in your muscles for growth. The body will only build new muscle fibers when they are constantly put against an increased resistance. Thus, try to follow a rep range of 6 to 8 and try increasing the resistance every week as the rep range increases.   15. You go to the gym and tell the trainer that you want to get in shape. Maybe even get lean or ripped. They will say that you need to go on a diet. This part is correct. But the misery they put you through is one of the worst things that can happen to anyone. These things are: 1. A boiled food diet. Your taste buds will die a slow death. All you get to eat are foods like boiled chicken, steamed fish, oats, etc. You justify it by saying you eat food for function and not for taste. You also find stupid fitness quotes like 'No pain, No gain' motivating and relatable to your situation. 2. A ketogenic diet. The new blue-eyed baby of schmucks who say deluded stuff like 'I train your trainer.' Essentially, carbs are the reason two world wars happened, cancer happened, and the reason humans cannot fly. Carbs are the reason for all things wrong with the world. You must avoid it. Basically, these schools of thought are plain idiotic. You do not need to swing to any extremes if you want to get lean or shredded. Here are five things you should do instead: 1. Count Your Calories © Thinkstock The laws of thermodynamics dictate a change in your body weight. You eat more calories than you expend, you gain weight. You eat fewer calories than you expend and you lose weight. It all comes down to this. Any dietary pattern that you follow, any macro ratio you eat, whether you eat high carbs or high fat, in the end, it doesn't even matter if it does not put you in a caloric deficit. 2. Eat More Protein © YouTube Protein or amino acids are the building blocks of your muscle tissue. If you want more muscle, you need higher rates of muscle protein synthesis. Muscle protein synthesis is the process through which your body synthesizes more muscle tissue. Target anywhere between 1.8 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilo of your body weight. 3. Eat Your Fruits And Vegetables Your mom used to tell you this as a kid. Eat your greens and fruits. You did not back then. You don't even now. Fruits and veggies will ensure you are eating enough fiber for the day. It will keep you full, help you have good gut health, and provide you with micronutrients like vitamins and minerals. There is no downside to it. 4. Embrace Flexible Dieting © Thinkstock Flexible dieting, simply put, is a mindset. A mindset that helps you see food as it is, nutritious and helps you towards your goals or non-nutritious and takes you further away from your goal. You stop seeing food as good or bad. You do not swing into diet days and cheat days which is more harmful. Read this piece. You eat highly nutritious food most of the time with a little less nutritious food sometimes that helps you stay on track. 5. Stop Believing That You Need A Lot Of Supplements If you go to buy a supplement for a particular goal today, the industry has developed so much stupid stuff that they can sell you one for anything. A majority of these supplements are often useless. Supplements that can be beneficial for everyone are whey protein, caffeine, and creatine monohydrate. That's it. "I have a slow metabolism." "I cannot follow the GM diet." etc….. Well, fat loss is not easy to achieve. I get that. But it does not have to be as complicated as you make it with those statements above. Fun fact: You don't need to do anyting mentioned in the statements above if you want to lose weight. How Does Weight Loss Happen? Your body needs a certain number of calories to maintain its weight. You have to eat lesser than that number to start losing weight. How To Calculate This Number? © Thinksticok An easy way to calculate the fat loss calories is to multiply your body weight x 24. Or you can use any of the innumerable calculators available online. For example, an 80-kilo guy can start eating 80x24 = 1920 calories to start losing weight. Obviously, this number will change with time as you lose weight. You do not need to follow any specific special diet or eat 6 times a day to boost metabolism. All you need to focus on is eating this calorie number consistently. Install a calorie counting app and feed in what you eat throughout the day. If it is going above this, you need to cut back on food. How Many Meals Per Day? As many as you are comfortable with. Do you like eating 3 meals? Eat 3 meals. Do you like eating 6 meals? Eat 6 meals. As long as you stick to the calorie number, it is all that matters. © Pixabay How Do I Exercise? I Cannot Go To The Gym 6 Days A Week. You do not need to. Just take care of a few things if you want to look good after losing weight: 1. Lift weights over doing just cardio. 2. Select exercises that work your whole body or more muscle groups and not just stick to bicep curls. 3. Exercise each body part at least two times per week. 4. Get stronger at those exercises. Need a 3-day plan with which you can kickstart your journey? Read this article. I Do Not Want To Take Fat Burners Or Fat Loss Pills. Are They Needed? No. They are not. Most supplements in the fitness industry are a bust and pretty pointless. They just give out fake promises and take your money. Do I Need Any Supplements? No again. Are there some supplements that can benefit you? Yes. And they are: 1. Whey protein 2. Caffeine 3. Creatine Again, they do not do anything magical or help you achieve your goals overnight. They benefit you in a certain way which I have covered in detail in this article. Oh, and guess what? Even if you buy 3 of these and use it, it will not cost you over 100 Rupees per day. How Long Do I Need To Do This? Good question. The simplest answer would be; 'as long as it takes.' As a lot of factors play a role in this and it is a very subjective thing. This paints a very bland and depressing scene thousands of feet above the sea level. I have often sensed the inner urge of certain passengers to freely express themselves and endear their magnificent personalities on their neighbours. This article elaborates ten golden commandments you can follow to be highly appreciated by your neighbours on a flight; especially the ones that depart before sunrise: Rule #1: Thou Shall Be The King Of All You Survey For generations, we have been programmed to control our territory. It is an insult to your manliness if a co-passenger invades your allocated territory. The best practice always suggests that you take complete control of armrests on either side without conceding an inch. If you are really in the mood, you should ensure your elbow pokes into your neighbour's soft protruding belly! Rule #2: Thou Shall Always Be On 911 Mode The world is progressing at a very fast pace. And for all of us, time is money! Hence it is imperative you manage every second onboard efficiently. I highly recommend that you start taking calls as soon as the aircraft lands and barge your way through to collect your luggage before everyone else. Even if it damages someone else's bag...or head, it is understandable. What if a Fortune 500 CEO ends up calling you in the 5 minutes you are on the aircraft after it lands? Rule #3: Thou Shall Use The Washroom The Way You Used It During Your Hostel Days Certain passengers seem very fond of the washroom on flights. They seem to not let go of the washroom. In light of this warrior spirit, it is advisable that you bang hard on the washroom door screaming, “jaldi karo bhai, kitna time lagega” and then lock your self up inside for the purpose of meditation. To fondly remember your college days, you should treat the washroom the way you maintained it during your hostel days! Rule #4: Thou Shall Repeatedly Call The Air-Hostess Most airlines pride themselves on providing best in class customer service. But airlines should not take this premium imagery for granted. Hence, as a responsible customer, you should repeatedly call the air-hostess to check if she is still up to the mark. Ask her for yesterday's newspaper, ask her for mouth freshener, ask her for cotton earbuds, ask her for tissue paper, ask her if she can explain the evacuation instructions in Bhojpuri. If nothing else, ask her for a selfie with you! Rule #5: Thou Shall Watch A Movie Without The Earphones On © Hope Productions Entertainment is best relished when it is enjoyed by all and sundry. Your co-passengers will be highly appreciative if you play the latest episode of 'CID' featuring ACP Pradyuman at full volume without speakers. After all, who doesn't like a little thrill early morning? Rule #6: Thou Shall Constantly Feel Lighter In Air After the gymnasium, the flight is the most appropriate place to feel lighter in the air. Repeatedly attempting to relieve gas accumulated in your alimentary canal is a great way to lose weight 35,000 feet above sea level. In addition, it has the added benefit of all your co-passengers knowing what you had for dinner - garlic, onion, radish, mutton! Rule #7: Thou Shall Burp, Belch & Yawn Repeatedly Actually, there are other ways to relieve yourself in addition to the above. With the right discipline of belching, burping and yawning every 90 seconds; your body is guaranteed to feel light by a couple of pounds before you arrive on land. It is advisable to burp and belch in a rhythmic pattern so that they resemble the latest Honey Singh blockbuster. After all, everyone would love to experience a live Honey Singh performance! Rule #8: Thou Shall Make Your Neighbours Smell Your Aromatic Socks A great anonymous writer once said, “A man is known by the stinky socks he keeps.” There is no better way for a man to express his personality on a flight other than by removing his shoes and making his co-passengers smell his aromatic socks. After all, who doesn't like the smell of rotting onion combined with dog poop? Who knows, if the stars are aligned, Calvin Klein might select it for its next line of perfumes! Rule #9: Thou Shall Peep Into Your Neighbour's Laptop Knowledge is omnipresent and everyone is a source of learning! With this gospel truth in mind, you should always peep into your neighbour's laptop repeatedly to understand the industry and the work they are up to. Who knows, your neighbour might have quality inside information which you are missing out on? Rule #10: Thou Shall Attempt To Play Agony Aunt To Your Neighbour The world is very depressed. Everyone should do their bit to make the world a better place. As a result, it is always advisable to lend an empathetic shoulder to your neighbour. If you see a lady in her late 20s without an engagement ring, she will always appreciate if you ask her “abhi tak bachche nahin huain?” In conclusion, it is not easy to be a difficult pesky co-passenger. But with the right amount of dedication and blind faith to the above commandments, it is only a matter of time before your inner dream is realised! There's No Space for Jealousy Irrespective of whether you're exclusively (but casually) involved or in an open relationship, there's no space for jealousy in such relationships.
