  1. Photo: FileISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence has been summoned again today to discuss the amendments to the Army Act, Air Force Act, and Navy Act, a few days after it approved the bill aimed at regularizing the tenure of service chiefs. The meeting of the standing committee was called after it was established that the rules and regulations of the parliament were violated during the January 3 session of the committee. The parliament will vote on the bill after the go-ahead of the defence committee. Sources said that parliamentary secretary Captain Jamil Ahmed presided over the session, which was against the parliamentary procedures. Also read: Defence standing committee to meet again to discuss amendment bills Sources further said that Ahmed did not call for a vote when the time came to approve the bills, violating the rules and regulations of the lower house. Hence, Amjad Khan Niazi will chair the session of the standing committee when it meets today to discuss the amendment bills and approve them by a vote. In the previous meeting, members of the upper house had also been called to discuss the bills. However, senators have not been asked to attend Monday meeting, suggest reports. Opposition's supportThe Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have already given their assent to the amendment bills. The PML-N has announced it will support the bill 'unconditionally' while the PPP has called for the 'democratic legislative process' to be followed. Also read: NA to vote on bill formalising services chiefs' tenure These laws will set the maximum age limit of the three services chiefs — chief of army staff, chief of air staff and chief of naval staff-- at 64 years. If the bills get passed, the prime minister will have the power to extend the tenure of any service chief and the president will give his final nod to the extension or reappointment. Under the clause 8B of the bill, the president, on the advice of the prime minister, may “reappoint the Chief of the Army Staff for additional tenure of three (03) years, on such terms and conditions, as may be determined by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister, in the national security interest or exigencies, from time to time”. “Notwithstanding anything contained in this Act or any other law, or any order or judgement of any Court, the appointment, reappointment or extension of the Chief of the Army Staff, or the exercise of discretion by the appointing authority in this regard, shall not be called into question before any court on any ground whatsoever.” Also read: ECP issues list of lawmakers failing to disclose asset detailsSC directs govt to legislate on COAS tenureBack in November, the apex court had asked the government to legislate on an extension in the COAS's services within six months, allowing General Bajwa to stay in office until then, after briefly suspending the notification of the extension in his tenure. Prior to that, PM Imran in August had approved the extension in the COAS's services through an executive order. Former chief justice Asif Saeed Khosa had in late November taken up a petition 'in public interest', challenging the extension in service of the COAS. Last month, after the top court issued the detailed verdict in the COAS case, the government had filed a review petition in the SC, pleading the court to form a larger bench to hear the case, and requesting it to keep the proceedings in-camera.
  2. TEHRAN: Air pollution forced schools to close on Sunday in parts of Iran including Tehran, as the capital lay under a thick cloud of smog considered hazardous to health. The pollution level in the capital was "unhealthy for sensitive groups" and officials warned the young, elderly and people with respiratory illnesses to stay indoors, with sporting activities suspended. The decision to shut schools in the capital was announced late Saturday by deputy governor Mohammad Taghizadeh, after a meeting of an emergency committee on air pollution."All of (Tehran) province´s schools except for Firuzkuh and Damavand counties are closed for Sunday," he said, quoted by state news agency IRNA.Schools in the capital will close on Monday, the third day of the Iranian working week, he added later in a state TV interview. An "odd-even" traffic scheme based on vehicles´ registration numbers was imposed to restrict traffic in the capital, IRNA reported.Trucks were banned outright in Tehran province.Taghizadeh added that all activities at Tehran province´s numerous sand quarries would also be halted.Schools were also closed in the northern province of Alborz and in the central cities of Qom and Arak, IRNA reported.A grey cloud hung over Tehran on Sunday, obstructing the view of the mountains overlooking the city to the north.Average airborne concentration of the finest and most hazardous particles (PM2.5) was at 145 microgrammes per cubic metre for the 24 hours until Sunday noon, according to government website air.tehran.ir.That is close to six times the World Health Organization´s recommended maximum of 25 microgrammes per m3.The problem worsens in Tehran during winter, when cold air and a lack of wind traps hazardous smog over the city for days on end, a phenomenon known as thermal inversion. Most of the city´s pollution is caused by heavy vehicles, motorbikes, refineries and power plants, according to a World Bank report released last year."We can´t do anything but wait for wind to blow or rain to fall," said student Bardia Danaie.

  6. Usually, when the police are going to arrest someone, they just go and do it, right? Well, it gets a little more complicated when it comes to someone related to El Chapo, and this time, it was his son Ovidio Guzman Lopez. When Mexican federal troops managed to detain Ovidio, they were ultimately forced to let him go soon. Why? Because heavily armed suspected members of the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel made sure of that. The security forces were overpowered by the cartel members who opened fire and caused a lot of damage. Security Minister Alfonso Durazo told Reuters that he was later released, saying the decision was taken to protect lives. The shootout also caused a lot of panic among the residents of the city of Culiacan and some fled from the scene while the rest remained locked inside their homes. Reportedly, residents have been asked to stay inside and schools have been closed until further notice. © Reuters It all started when the Mexican National Guard was doing a routine patrol in the area, when they ended up getting attacked by people inside one of the houses in the afternoon. After fighting back and taking control of the house, they found four people in the house, one of them being Ovidio. While this small showdown was going on, other cartel members reached the scene with way more firepower. As if that wasn't enough, more violent attacks erupted at different parts of the city, causing everyone to panic. © Reuters With the "purpose of safeguarding the security and tranquillity of the Culiacan society, the officials of the Cabinet of Security agreed to suspend said actions," said Alfonso Durazo.
  7. Labelled as one of the most unpredictable sides in the tournament, West Indies looked at their menacing best during a seven-wicket triumph over Pakistan in their ICC World Cup opener. The Windies pace attack turned out to be the nemesis for the Pakistani batsmen who were hurried on by the pace and bounce of the opposition bowlers. Amongst the multiple pace options in their armoury, Sheldon Cottrell is arguably the one that stands out. The left-arm seamer can not only generate serious pace, but his searing bouncers and control on length make him more lethal. But, Cottrell isn't just famous for his bowling capabilities, in fact, if anyone has seen this man bowl, they'd have found his unique and animated wicket celebration just too hard to go unnoticed. The Windies speedster's short march and a salute to the pavilion is a mark of respect and tribute to the Jamaican Armed Forces, where he was earlier employed as a soldier. “It's a military-style salute. I'm a soldier by profession. Me saluting is just to show my respect to the Jamaica Defence Force,” he was quoted as saying by the BBC earlier this year. 8. Amidst the heat of elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been accused of stealing a template for its party's new website. A start-up, W3Layouts, has alleged that the party used their template but deliberately removed the backlink. W3Layouts also alleged that the party had removed the code wherever W3Layouts' name was mentioned as soon as the matter was brought to light. The company published a blog post explaining the matter and even posted a series of tweets exposing the whole debacle. Why Removed author information from css ?? But it is available at https://t.co/PyHj2HymCG pic.twitter.com/Nih9cFJe85 — W3layouts (@W3layouts) March 22, 2019 “While the visible backlinks were removed, it was clear that BJP was still using the W3Layouts code as it was evident in the source code of the page,” one of the tweets said. After a few days of back-and-forth banter, BJP decided to take down the code from their website. In response, the party said, “It was a free-to-use application. Their code was dropped after they insisted on a backlink, as it is not something we do in the normal course. We had in fact offered to mention their name but since it didn't find favour, we preferred to work with the alternate solution. We are not using their template.” © Twitter Although the matter has been settled with BJP dropping W3Layouts' template, the start-up founder stressed that the license agreement was clear. He said, “You are not allowed to remove back-link to W3Layouts in a template unless you have paid for the template.” Both the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have decided to remain tight-lipped on this matter. In fact, the PM has found himself facing flak for using selling #MainBhiChowkidar merchandise on his Twitter handle.
  9. When life becomes dull, it's not easy to find your spunk and fight back. In order to succeed in life, one has to make it fun, positive, and full of motivation! If you find your life boring and unmotivated, you simply won't be able to make any progress. There are many reasons why you might not be feeling any enthusiasm in your life. And there are even more ways to overcome it. Following are 4 such reasons why you might not be feeling motivated and ways to overcome it: 1. Lack Of Purpose It's very important to have a goal, to have a purpose in life. Following it keeps you sane and sorted. If you don't have a purpose, you won't find any reason to move forward in life. Set a goal, fix a target! When you wake up, you should have a goal in your head, and if you are able to successfully create one, you'll be automatically motivated to achieve it. 2. Procrastination This is the worst thing you can do to yourself. When you start postponing your affairs & chores, your mind adapts to procrastination. You won't be doing any work on time and would always feel too tired and lethargic to do so. Procrastination kills the motivation to do anything. Luckily, it's not difficult to come out of this state. Remember two things – 'the 5-minute rule' & 'schedule'. Apply the 5-minute rule in your life. Whatever task can be done under 5 minutes, don't postpone it. Do it as soon as it comes to your mind. You will see a big change in your life by applying this small rule. Small chores will be done, your mind will be happy after completing a task, and slowly, it will start to procrastinate the procrastination. Next is, schedule. Fix a schedule and strictly follow it. Decide at what time you're going to wake up, have breakfast, leave for the office, and every other thing in your everyday life. Give some time for light exercise. Sticking to a schedule would make you punctual, as you would be completing all the tasks within the deadline and this would eventually push you to aim for higher goals. 3. Lack of Money Believe it or not but lack of money can also be de-motivating. If you have gotten accustomed to a lower salary or lower returns, then you won't need the feel to work hard. You would trick yourself into thinking that two square meals & a roof above your head are good enough for you. If that has happened to you, you should become a little materialistic. Set your eye on something, something out of your budget. Convince yourself that you should buy it. You'll see yourself wanting to work harder to be able to buy it. And you would have it eventually. When that happens and you get your motivation back, work smart. Set another milestone, and in your free time, look for other sources to earn. Pick a hobby and try to turn into a profession. You would not only be enjoying your time but would be utilizing it in the most perfect way. A little extra cash would be great for your savings account or for the latest Play Station. Leave the TV Shows and booze for the weekend. On weekdays, focus on improving your income. It is not that hard to find a hobby and become good enough in it that it starts paying you. You just need to be determined. 4. Social Circle Your social circle makes a huge impact on your life. If you surround yourself with positive & happy people, you would also feel happy and motivated. However, if your friends and colleagues are unmotivated and have negative opinions on everything, then this would impact you on a great level. Their constant criticism of the world would make you look at the world the same way. You would start finding fault in everything which would give your brain a great excuse to become slothful. This is when your motivation to do anything would die and you would just spend your time doing nothing. If this is happening to you, you need to get out of such a company. Join some activities like trekking, or dance classes, or yoga classes, basically anything which would help you meet new people. This change will bring a positive impact on your life as you would not only be interacting with new people but will also be joining an activity. This will bring back the motivation you need in your life. Now that we have told you every major reason why you might be becoming an always tired – demotivated person, you should start doing the aforementioned things to achieve greatness in life. Everyone can be a hero, you just need to fight your battle and come as a winner! May the force be with you!
  10. Even though 2018 was marked as the year of love when the Supreme Court decriminalised homosexuality and made it possible for everyone to chose and live by the sexual orientation of their choice, we still have archaic waves of despair following us. General Bipin Rawat, the Chief of Army Staff suggested that that the Supreme Court's decision on gay *** marriage will not be implemented in the Army and any such actions pertaining to that are forbidden. However, at the same time, he also emphasised on the fact that the Army is not above the law. But because any Supreme Court verdict can be challenged, the law is definitely not being implemented in the forces for now, according to General Rawat. (c)Pintrest "We are not above the country's law but when you join the Indian Army, some of the rights and privileges you enjoy are not what we have. Some things are different for us, but we are certainly not above the Supreme Court," he said. "We will have to see how we take a call, let us also see how it comes into the society, whether it's accepted or not... I can't say what will happen 20 years down the line." We agree that the Army follows a certain decree of taking away certain fundamental rights from its personnel due to security reasons like the right to freedom of expression etc., which can fit in because it can create belligerent situations if the right is practised within the forces, but taking away the right to decide one's sexual orientation is a daunting proposition and is legally incorrect to oppose, anywhere. (c)Twitter The fact that women were allowed in combat in 2017 after a long haul indicates the barriers the Army has against giving equal opportunities to all the sexes. Women can now enter the Army and train to combat on the field. But this wasn't allowed before 2017 because of safety issues that posed as a threat for women who wanted to join the Armed Forces. Now, we are witnessing another restriction in the forces that is definitely denting the very fabric of individuality and the right to liberty, in general. "Aap logon me chalega to chalne do. Humare yahan nahi chalega (We will not allow this to happen in the Army) In the army LGBT issues... are not unacceptable. We will still be dealing with them under various sections of the Army Act," said General Rawat, addressing his annual press conference. The callous references made towards the LGBT movement by the General, which won a fair space in the country last year is edging on the narrow-minded thought process of a few people who do not understand it. Which is fair I agree, but to take the basic right away from men and women alike, who give up their lives for the country is absolutely unfair and this is something which General Rawat may never understand. (c)Twitter According to him, the Army is 'very conservative' and anything that probes the very archaic fabric of the forces will be disqualified. He also backed his claim by saying 'we are neither modem or westernised' which is an absolutely fair statement to make amidst the very opaque fragment of patriotism we serve our country with, but in all fairness, being a particular way and choosing your sexual orientation really has nothing to do with being modern or being westernised. It's something one's born with. We're hopelessly disappointed by statements made by General Bipin Rawat on the LGBT movement and its application in the Indian Army, especially after a gruelling time the entire movement went through for many years in the country. (c)Pintrest It took a five-bench constitution bench of the SC to finally rule out section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which banned 'consensual unnatural ***'. But unfortunately, we're still fighting the cause fundamentally, within the most pristine forces of our country and we hope this too changes someday.
  11. For a team that arrived in UAE as one of the tournament's favourites, the Pakistan cricket team looked like a shadow of the side that won the ICC Champions Trophy last year in the 2018 Asia Cup. The performance of the Sarfraz Ahmed-led side was so miserable that it beggared belief. Beginning their campaign against Hong Kong, Pakistan produced a dominating performance on their way to an eight-wicket win. Their next game against India was expected to be a livewire, but Pakistan just couldn't negate the opposition bowlers before succumbing to an eight-wicket loss. Their clash against Afghanistan, too, was far from what their expected as Pakistan survived a scare against the minnows. Already under pressure for their mediocre performances in the tournament, Pakistan didn't learn from their previous mistakes as they once again got steamrolled by India in the Super Four clash. Requiring a win to stay alive in the competition, Pakistan's worst outing came against Bangladesh who caused a major upset in the tournament with their emphatic 37-run win. © BCCL The loss against Bangladesh pushed Pakistan out of the tournament which caused a massive backlash on the social media. From the former cricketers to the cricket fans, Sarfraz and his team attracted a lot of criticism for their shambolic showing in the Asia Cup. While some blamed Sarfraz's captaincy, others targeted the Pakistani batsmen for their debacle in UAE. Amid all the criticism, a Pakistani journalist tried to troll Shoaib Malik by pinning the blame on the Pakistani batsman for their poor showing against Bangladesh which, in turn, led to their ouster from the Asia Cup. Taking to Twitter, the journo wrote: "Someone should ask Shoaib Malik if he has impressed Sania Mirza, can he play for the team in the next tournament? After pleasing his wife, can he do what the nation expects from him?". Arre bechaara.. clearly the poor guy has been watching a different Asia Cup!! https://t.co/c6JV6IHE8Y — Sania Mirza (@MirzaSania) September 26, 2018 The tweet attracted a lot of heat which eventually saw the journalist deleting it. But, not before, Sania Mirza - wife of Malik - had her say on the tweet. Coming to the aid of her husband, the Indian tennis sensation said: "Arre bechaara..clearly the poor guy has been watching a different Asia Cup". Ofcourse he did !! ðð½‍âï¸ https://t.co/gHjWXhgm8H — Sania Mirza (@MirzaSania) September 26, 2018 After being told that the Pakistani journalist had deleted his tweet, Sania said: "Ofcourse he did!!". For those who didn't know, Malik was arguably one of the top performers for Pakistan in the Asia Cup. With 211 runs in five games to his name, he was the second highest run-getter for his side after opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq (225 runs). Malik's unbeaten fifty was the reason why Pakistan managed to survive a scare against Afghanistan in the group stage. © Reuters Unfortunately, in the Super Four clash against Bangladesh, Malik was looking to build on his innings to aid Pakistan when he got dismissed to a blinder of a catch pulled off by Mashrafe Mortaza. The right-hander was sent back into the hut for 30 runs. But, it was clearly not his fault. The reason Pakistan lost the match and eventually crashed out of the tournament was probably because their batsmen failed to apply themselves. It's needless to say that it was a collective failure and not Malik's fault - something Sania highlighted sarcastically in her tweet.
