  9. LOS ANGELES: Police in Los Angeles announced Tuesday they are investigating a rape allegation made against British "Gossip Girl" actor Ed Westwick. Los Angeles Police Department official Drake Madison told AFP there was an "ongoing investigation" taking place, after actress Kristina Cohen accused him of rape Monday in a Facebook post. "I do not know this woman. I have never forced myself in any manner, on any woman. I certainly have never committed rape," Westwick, 30, wrote on Twitter. Cohen alleged Westwick raped her three years ago at his house, shortly after propositioning her and a producer she was dating. "Ed insisted we stay for dinner. I said I was tired and wanted to leave, trying to get out of what was already an uncomfortable situation," she wrote, adding she was then persuaded to stay by the producer and went to rest in the guest room. "I eventually fell asleep, I was woken up abruptly by Ed on top of me, his fingers entering my body. I told him to stop, but he was strong," she said. "I was paralysed, terrified. I couldn´t speak, I could no longer move. He held me down and raped me." Cohen -- who has played roles in series such as "Californication" and "The Middle" -- added the producer blamed her and suggested accusing Westwick would ruin her career. The accusation is the latest in a string of allegations of sexual misconduct in Hollywood, which follow the publication of an expose on movie mogul Harvey Weinstein in early October.
  10. Pakistan's newest female superhero has vowed to battle venal officials and protect battered women, as her creator tries to inspire the next generation to fight injustice in a deeply patriarchal society. The new "Pakistan Girl" comic series is based on Sarah, a normal teenager with a pet cat who discovers she has superhuman powers after waking from a coma caused by a blast in her village. Donning a green cape, Pakistan's national colour, the protagonist whips a man beating a woman in a market and saves a young girl taken hostage by a bribe-seeking police officer in the series' first comic book released this summer. The creator of the English-language comic says he hopes the superhero will give young girls across Pakistan a role model and embolden them to fight corruption and violence in a country where crime is rife in major cities and corruption is the norm."There's a huge shortage of female role models and superheroes in the mainstream media here," author Hassan Siddiqui told AFP. "We wanted to create a strong female character for the girls in Pakistan and even the young boys in Pakistan that they can look up to." Women in Pakistan have fought for their rights for decades, where so-called "honour killings" and other violence against women remains commonplace. Netizens on social media have welcomed the comic, writing largely positive reviews online and calling for more superhero stories in the future. "Its a very brilliant step by you guys... I'm a big fan of Marvel and DC comics and looking forward for this too," wrote fan Syed Hassan Nasir on Facebook. The author said he now plans to work on an Urdu version of the comic with the aim of reaching millions of readers across the country. He is also mulling a possible animation adaption. New education But reaching the masses won't be easy. Pakistan's education system has been woefully underfunded for decades, exacerbating illiteracy with more than half of the country?s eight-year-olds unable to read. According to a 2016 government study, a staggering 24 million Pakistani children are out of school, with a larger share of girls staying home than boys -- 12.8 million compared to 11.2 million. But new fan and school principal Saadia Adnan hopes the comic will provide a new way to help educate children, while also steering them clear of gender stereotypes. "I think we should be teaching them through this kind of literature because that's actually the tender age when they are building their own images of their future life," said Adnan after browsing through a bookstore copy. Siddiqui's latest creation follows the success of his earlier comic series "Pakistan Man" -- a moustachioed hero who battles one nemesis named "The Corrupter" and another villain responsible for banning Youtube. "Siddiqui's first comic, 'Pakistan Man', sold like hot cakes and I hope this book, which is already doing good with sales, will follow suit," said Ahmad Saeed, owner of Islamabad's biggest bookstore Saeed Book Bank. Pakistan Girl also follows in the footsteps of the country?s hit 2013 comic "The Burka Avenger", which chronicled the adventures of a mild-mannered teacher who fights gangsters trying to close down the girls' school where she works.
  11. Miley Cyrus says she is steering away from her eccentric – often frowned-upon – shenanigans and rolling out a new sound that could help people take her more seriously after she was dubbed one of pop music's bad girls. Speaking to Billboard Magazine in an interview published late on Wednesday, the 24-year-old former Disney star said she wanted to be "super clear and sharp" and focus on a new collection of songs that takes her back to her country music roots. "I haven't smoked weed in three weeks, which is the longest I've ever [gone without it]. I'm not doing drugs, I'm not drinking, I'm completely clean right now! That was just something that I wanted to do," Cyrus said. The singer, whose father is country music singer Billy Ray Cyrus and whose godmother is Dolly Parton, will release new single Malibu on May 11. Billboard said it was a love song inspired by her fiance, actor Liam Hemsworth, with whom she reunited last year after a 2013 breakup. Read more: Did we see this coming when Miley said she wanted 'to be a hopeful hippie'? Cyrus, who rose to fame on the Disney Channel show Hannah Montana, ditched her innocent image in 2013, admitting to drug use and appearing scantily clad in public and in music videos. She grabbed headlines when she dressed in latex lingerie and twerked on stage with R&B singer Robin Thicke at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, in a performance that landed her the title of pop music's bad girl. Her upcoming new album will feature more acoustic songs and melodies written by Cyrus and will include a song for Hillary Clinton, whom she supported in last year's US presidential election, and another anthem dedicated to women in the workplace, Billboard said. Discussing politics, Cyrus, who will return as a judge on NBC reality singing show The Voice later this year, said she wanted to reach out to her more conservative fans. "I like talking to people that don't agree with me, but I don’t think I can do that in an aggressive way," the singer said.
