  1. On Monday, a couple of hours before the final list of India's top 15 cricketers who will be representing the nation in the greatest contest of the cricketing world, was declared, former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh shared his thoughts on the decision to select one of two players in particular. In an interview with India Today, Bhajji spoke about the lack of need of a secondary or backup wicket-keeper to the current man behind the stumps, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Showing his utmost faith in the former skipper, he believes that the Indian squad are more than good enough to be successful at the 2019 ICC World Cup with just a single wicket-keeping maestro, thereby also announced his apprehensions about both Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant being selected. “It's not that Dhoni does not have niggles. Playing cricket with him I know he has some back issues but with his experience, he knows how to play with all that,” Singh told India Today. © Reuters Not to let his devotion toward Dhoni get the better of him, Harbhajan also spoke of how KL Rahul is well qualified and experienced to fill in Mahi's shoes if the 37-year-old suffered a serious injury. “I don't think you need any backup for Dhoni unless he suffers from any major injury during the World Cup. In case of any minor niggle, you do have KL Rahul in the squad who can keep.” Singh also showed some love for the Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer, Navdeep Saini, who's fresh bowling style and raw pace has not only impressed cricketers like Sourav Ganguly and himself during 2019 season of the Indian Premier League but also in the domestic circuit. “You need a fourth specialist seamer in England too and Navdeep Saini would be my pick. Not just because he has bowled well in IPL which in itself is credible in Bangalore's batting friendly wickets but also because he has won Ranji matches in the past, so he comes with domestic experience,” he said.
  2. The twelfth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) brought two heavyweights Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) facing each other at a packed MA Chidambaram stadium on 23rd March. To set the hearts racing, the opening match also pitted two of the biggest names in international cricket - MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli - against each other. But, in a contest that had star players including the likes of Kohli, Dhoni and AB de Villiers, an unlikely candidate managed to steal the spotlight. © Twitter/IPL Harbhajan Singh stunned the RCB and left every cricket fan in awe with a brilliant bowling spell that ended with impressive figures of 3-20. The inclusion of Harbhajan, who took just seven wickets in 13 games last season, in the Chennai line-up had surprised cricket pundits and fans alike. But, the off-spinner repaid the faith of his captain and team management with a brilliant outing. For someone who took his last T20 wicket against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on 11th May last year, Bhajji appeared to be a class of his own as he claimed the prized wickets of Kohli, De Villiers and Moeen Ali. Thanks to his bowling effort, Chennai managed to restrict RCB to a mere 70-run total - the sixth-lowest total in IPL history. © Twitter/IPL In reply, Chennai chased the paltry total with seven wickets and 14 deliveries to spare. Harbhajan was also adjudged the 'Man of the Match' for his pivotal bowling effort. "This is a special award for me. It goes to my wife and family. You cannot ask for a better start. Since they have a lot of left-handers, Fleming came and told me I will be playing. It was nice to get a wicket up front and once you have it, your confidence level grows up. Imran bowled really well and it's always nice to get wickets of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. How often an off-spinner gets their wickets," Harbhajan said at the post-match press conference.
  3. Arguably one of most impressive off-spinners of his generation, Harbhajan Singh ruled the bowling charts during his stint with Team India in international cricket. Making full use of his whiplash action, Bhajji managed to alter the length and pace of his deliveries with relative ease, which, in turn, spelled doom for opposition batsmen. But, a lack of form and rise of young spinners has pretty much restricted him to domestic cricket now. While he might not have featured for Team India in almost three years, Bhajji continues to be a vital cog in Chennai Super Kings' bowling unit in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While cricket remains his first love, the 38-year-old is a self-proclaimed fan of wrestling. He was earlier seen arm-wrestling prominent WWE superstar Dalip Singh aka the Great Khali. And, now the 'Turbanator' has backed it up by stepping in the ring himself. View this post on Instagram Panja with great khali @dalipsinghcwe #bigfella #Awesomeguy #bigman A post shared by Harbhajan Turbanator Singh (@harbhajan3) on Jun 8, 2018 at 8:51am PDT Invited to Khali's wrestling academy - Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE) - in Jalandhar, Harbhajan stepped in the ring and gave a motivational speech to the youngsters. The Indian spinner was urging them to work on the area of their interest irrespective of the sport they chose to pursue. But, before he could finish, Harbhajan's motivational speech was cut short by a local wrestler. The wrestler, whose ring name is 'Dubey-ji', entered the ring to interrupt the Indian cricketer's speech. Confronting Bhajji, the local wrestler introduced himself as the Singham of CWE wrestling. To which, Harbhajan broke down laughing before mocking him by saying: "What kind of a Singham are you because the Singham's that I've heard of, have strong personality, unlike you". View this post on Instagram Some CWE time at @dalipsinghcwe Khali academy jalandhar ððªð A post shared by Harbhajan Turbanator Singh (@harbhajan3) on Feb 2, 2019 at 8:41pm PST In response, the irate wrestler said: "You may be a superstar but you don't know the first thing about making any sort of motivational speeches". The confrontation went on before 'Dubey-ji' challenged Bhajji to a fight. But, he soon regretted his decision as Harbhajan landed a tight slap on his cheek that saw the local wrestler running out of the ring. To make a point, Bhajji, then, also dropped the mic in the middle of the ring. While it pretty much looked like a publicity stunt, Bhajji's latest antics surely reminded us of the infamous slap he landed on the cheek of S Sreesanth following an encounter between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab in the IPL in 2008.
  4. Bros… They fight and then they make up. While some fights are short-lived and can be overcome over a couple of cold ones, some are rather ghastly and leave a scar on the relationship. It may last for years, sometimes even decades but if they are true to their friendship, things do end on a happy note. Such is the case with the two Indian bowlers who used to be best buddies before one day, India's top spinner Harbhajan Singh decided to get one across S Sreesanth's face after the end of an Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). More than a decade ago, during IPL's 2008 series, Singh's Mumbai Indians were going through a bad run and were on a losing streak. Things were hostile inside the locker room and the frustration showed on the faces and in the actions of the team members. So, when the then 24-year-old Sreesanth led Punjab to victory against Singh's MI, the Kerala-born pacer ended up with a red face and tears in his eyes. Why, you ask? Well, because after an over enthusiastic Sreesanth, who was known for mocking the batsmen after he got them out, did the same to Bhajji's men, Singh ended up slapping his fellow Man in Blue. Of course, we are going on the words of the people who witnessed this live, as there is no footage of the incident taking place. However, 11 years later, in an interview with BehindWoods Air, Singh has finally given his apology in front of everyone and believes that it should not have happened. “Whatever happened with Sreesanth.. me and him on the field… a lot of people talk about that incident now. If I have to go back and rectify something in my life, I would correct that. I shouldn't have done that,” he said. Now it is up to Sreesanth, who has been desperate to get another chance of playing with Team India after being accused of match fixing, to let go of the incident and forgive Bhajji. Could this be the beginning of another bromance? After all, time heals all wounds.
  5. In what was a rather surprising and unpleasant reality check for the Indian cricket team, the Aussies beat them by 34 runs yesterday at the Sydney Cricket Ground. While the Australian bowlers deserve a lot of credit for their attack, it can be agreed that it wasn't the brightest of days for the Indian batting side. Despite Rohit Sharma's phenomenal 133 in the first match since the cricketer became a father, the team could not get over their long daunting woes of a good opening partnership as Shikhar Dhawan quickly went back to the locker room on duck after the umpire raised the finger to Aussie bowler Jason Behrendorff's LBW appeal. Jhye Richardson goes BANG, BANG in a stunning start with the ball from the Aussies!#AUSvIND | @bet365_aus pic.twitter.com/IsNq1ALGoh — cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) January 12, 2019 After skipper Virat Kohli and Ambati Rayudu were unable to make good on their time at the pitch, MS Dhoni's 51 run performance led to him scoring 10,000 ODI runs for team India. But in an unfortunate series of events, Dhoni had to leave the pitch on a questionable LBW call made by the umpire which the former captain could not challenge as they were out of reviews. India are out of reviews and Dhoni has to go... #CloseMatters#AUSvIND | @GilletteAU pic.twitter.com/WRYVQPxwIM — cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) January 12, 2019 “When it rains, it pours.” Dhoni's departure was a sign that this match was out of reach for Kohli's boys as there was no other batsman that was aware of the conditions in Sydney or had enough experience in India's recent trips Down Under against an almost new Australian side. Or, was there? After Kohli's middle order failed to provide during the first ODI, former Man in Blue, and top spinner, Harbhajan Singh raised his support for the in-form batsman and Australia's new mascot for sledging, Rishabh Pant, who's not only had an exceptional game in the last Test at SCG, but is also hungry to prove his worth in the 50-over format in order to get selected for the 2019 ICC World Cup, to be included in the roster for the next match at the Adelaide Oval. “Rishabh Pant has that X-factor in him, which Adam Gilchrist had. He has the potential to hit six sixes…I am not talking about six sixes in an over but if he plays 30 balls he has the ability to hit at least six sixes, which can be game-changing,” Harbhajan advocated Pant's role to India Today. In the recent occurrences during which Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have been suspended for two games, it would be an option worth considering taking up Rishabh Pant instead of adding new players like Vijay Shankar and Shubman Gill.
  6. Ever since the so-called 'special' episode of 'Koffee With Karan' aired last Sunday, the lives of Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul have turned around for all the wrong reasons. Owing to their misogynist and sexist comments on the show, the two Indian cricketers have already faced a lot of backlash as they await fitting punishment for their actions on national TV. After the Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai's recommendation of a two-ODI ban, the duo was charged with misconduct and indiscipline before being suspended from all forms of cricket pending a detailed inquiry into the controversy. The two cricketers were later forced to return home from Australia where the Indian cricket team is currently engrossed with the ODI series. Amid the uproar on social media, Virat Kohli made his stand clear and stated that the comments made by Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul are not are not acceptable and the personal opinions are not the view of the India team. "We, definitely, as the Indian cricket team do not support views like that and that has been communicated. I can definitely say that as the Indian cricket team and responsible cricketers we definitely don't align with those views and those are purely individual views," Kohli had said ahead of India's first ODI against the Aussies at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). BCCL Following Kohli's strong stance on the demeanour of the two cricketers, Harbhajan Singh, too, came out all guns blazing against Pandya and Rahul for tarnishing the image of the game and those who play it. even went on to add that he won't be comfortable having Pandya and Rahul around his wife and daughter. "I will not travel with these two guys in the bus if my daughter or my wife are travelling in the team bus with me. How would they feel? You are looking at women in only one angle and that is not right," Harbhajan told India Today. The veteran Indian spinner also pointed out that the duo's comments have now put every cricketer's reputation on the line. "We don't talk about all this even with our friends and they were talking on public television. Now people might think was Harbhajan Singh like this, was Anil Kumble like this and was Sachin Tendulkar," Harbhajan added. Instagram/@hardikpandya93 "Pandya has been in the team for how long to talk of the team culture in the manner he did. I think this is the way to go," the 38-year-old said, when asked about the suspension. "The BCCI did the right thing, and this is also the way forward. This was expected and I am not surprised," Bhajji said. Following the nation-wide outrage, Pandya and Rahul, in response to the BCCI's showcause notice demanding an explanation from the two cricketers, had regretted their actions and apologised for hurting the sentiments of people. However, the BCCI officials unanimously decided to suspend the Pandya and Rahul while ordering an inquiry into the row.
  7. 'Bigg Boss 12' is undoubtedly one of the most entertaining and controversial reality shows on the Indian television right now. Just when we think that there's nothing that can surprise us anymore, the inmates come around and prove us wrong. In case you missed the recent episode, this time Surbhi Rana and Deepak Thakur were the two contenders for the captaincy, and Bigg Boss gave the task of 'Breaking News' to them where the two players had to report the best breaking news in the house to win the task. .@sreesanth36 is uncovering the story behind the fight between @harbhajan_singh and him. Watch what's happening now! #BB12 #BiggBoss12 pic.twitter.com/Ls1wWsoSKN — COLORS (@ColorsTV) November 22, 2018 While talking to Surbhi, Sreesanth revealed details about his controversy with Harbhajan Singh and confessed that both Harbhajan and he has committed mistakes. He started out with how he was selected in Preity Zinta's Kings XI Punjab and Harbhajan was shortlisted by Mumbai Indians for the IPL. After Mumbai Indians lost the match, Sreesanth went to wish him 'hard luck' and Harbhajan then hit him with the back of his hand that cannot be considered a slap. #BiggBoss12 ke ghar mein pehli baar, famous cricketer @sreesanth36 ne kiya ek hairatangez khulaasa! Bhajji didn't like it as he got defeated at his home ground. It was a volcanic eruption. I was angry in the beginning but then I cried because I felt helpless." After sharing his side of the story, he further said that he respects Harbhajan and considers him like his elder brother and that there was nothing between them. He concluded the conversation saying that he loves him and his family and gets equal amount of love in return. Thanks to Sreesanth and his shocking revelation about the 2008 Slapgate controversy, Surbhi won an extra point.
  8. Ever since its advent in 2008, The Indian Premier League (IPL) has established itself as one of the most exciting and lucrative Twenty20 (T20) tournaments in the world. The cash-rich league, over the years, has served as a great platform for the upcoming stars to prove their mettle and rake in big bucks during the high-profile auctions. With the twelfth edition of the IPL raring to begin in March next year, Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has already revealed the next "Million Dollar Baby" for the upcoming auctions. Impressed by his blistering batting performance, Bhajji has tipped West Indies' Shimron Hetmyer to spark a bidding war amongst the IPL franchises and eventually secure a big-bucks contract. What an inn by #Hetmyer..he is gonna be a next million dollar baby in the @IPL 2019 #INDvsWI 1st ODI — Harbhajan Turbanator (@harbhajan_singh) October 21, 2018 Harbhajan's comments came in the wake of Hetmyer's spectacular show with the willow during the first One-Day International (ODI) between India and West Indies in Guwahati. The left-hander looked in ominous form, taking the Indian bowling attack to the cleaners during his blazing 78-ball knock of 106 runs which included six fours and as many sixes. Coming in to bat with his side reeling at 86/3, Hetmyer played a mature innings that was thoroughly decorated with clinical strokes. Carrying the baton for his side, he stitched a 74-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Rovman Powell to stabilise the innings. After Powell's dismissal, the Windies star continued to bat on, stitching another crucial 60-run partnership for the sixth wicket with skipper Jason Holder to ensure his side remained poised for a competitive total. Congratulations to Shimron Hetmyer for making his third century in just 13 ODIs for the Windies! ð¯ He reaches his ton off just 74 balls, brought up in style with a six! ð #INDvWI pic.twitter.com/U57lw4L6TB — ICC (@ICC) October 21, 2018 His fine knock eventually came to an end when Ravindra Jadeja got him out caught at long leg in the 39th over. But, by then, Hetmyer had done his part in setting up a pivotal platform for Windies to finish their innings. And, the fact that he has now slammed three hundreds (each scored with a strike-rate around 135) in 13 ODI innings, surely makes this 21-year-old batsman an exciting prospect. Despite posting a mammoth total of 322 runs, while West Indies couldn't negate the batting geniuses of Virat Kohli (140) and Rohit Sharma (152*) before eventually losing the match by eight wickets, Hetmyer undoubtedly won hearts with his brilliant batting performance - one that instigated Bhajji to tip him as the next 'Million Dollar Baby' in the upcoming IPL season.
