  1. Ever since the first trailer for the live-action remake of the Disney classic and my all-time favourite movie, 'The Lion King' dropped, I have been literally counting the days until its release. I'm going to be honest, the wait is killing me! If you think this is another post that is going to give you a 'not-my-fault' card and blame carbs, hormones, sugar, junk, insulin, etc. for you being overweight, pay twice the amount of attention. Let me first put out the most important fact on the table. Who do you think is responsible for you being fat? YOU. Nothing and no one else. So firstly, stop with the blame game. You may still be thinking that "no, it is the hormones. I eat healthy all the time. How can it be?" Read through and you will realize how it is still you. The very basic of weight loss or weight gain is calorie balance. Eat more and expend less, you gain weight. Eat less and expend more, you lose weight. As simple as that. So the ONLY rule to lose weight is to burn more calories and eat fewer calories. Simply put, 'Eat less move more.' So, how do you figure that you are getting fat even if though you are eating healthy? 1. You Indulge In Mindless Eating Humans have evolved with survival instincts and this survival has one main food instinct which says 'see food, eat food.' I am not lying. You can try this experiment yourself. In your working space, fill a bowl up with chocolates and keep it someplace where people often visit, ideally by the printer or the water dispenser. © Unsplash Now check the same bowl towards the end of the day. There is a good chance that there would be little to no chocolates in there. Then, ask your co-workers casually what have they eaten all day. Almost nobody will mention chocolates on that list. Not that they want to lie to you, their brain simply does not register the food they eat subconsciously. The same translates to portion sizes and eating while not paying attention. Look at the computer screen or TV while eating and you might as well finish off an entire pizza, as your brain does not respond to the fullness signal as your attention is elsewhere. 2. Under-Reporting & Over-Estimation There is research which shows that people who keep food journals are terrible at reporting their food intakes and even worse at estimating their energy expenditure. © Unsplash A 1992 study showed that people under-reported food intake by 47% and over-reported energy expenditure by 51%. Considering that you eat as per the normal food guidelines and do around an hour of activity per day, your intake would come to around 2200 kcals and expenditure would be 400 kcals. But as per the study, the same example above meant people reported that they ate around 1200 kcals and had an expenditure of around 800 kcals. That is a huge margin of error and now you can see where you might be going wrong too. 3. Cheat Days Do Not Count This is usually the norm that even though you may be eating well or mindfully during the week, every weekend ends up being a deserved cheat day. © Unsplash Firstly, if you are dieting in the first place and you are above the normal range of body fat%, i.e. 10 to 15%, nothing about your cheat day is 'deserved'. And more often than not, these unaccounted cheat days are a shit ton of calories down your throat that needs to be stored somewhere. They are not going to magically disappear into thin air. So, the next time you think that it is the hormones making you fat, always remember this: It is ALWAYS you! A new leak of a prototype shows that the OnePlus 7 will use the Pro moniker and will also be borrowing features we've seen on previous Samsung smartphones. © Weibo The leak also confirmed a few features on the upcoming OnePlus 7 Pro as it will be using a curved edge screen, seen before on Samsung flagship smartphones. The smartphone is said to have a notch-less display which could only mean that it will have a pop-up selfie camera. This is exactly what happened at South Africa's Kruger National Park a few days ago, when a poacher was poached by the animals of the wildlife reserve. A suspected Rhino poacher was believed to have been 'suddenly' attacked by elephants where he died and later his remains were eaten by lions. The police said the man was suddenly attacked by an elephant, after which his accomplices claimed to have left his body on the road so that passers-by could find it, while they ran away from the park. When his family found out about his death, they urged the park to carry forth a search for him. While they'd been searching a few days, they didn't find his body but with the help of some additional field rangers, they discovered what was left of the man. By the looks of it, a pride of lions had devoured the man and left just his skull and his trousers as evidence. There have been many instances of Rhino poaching before. Forcing yourself to be happy and cheerful all the time serves no purpose. Who are we being fake and putting on an act for? Feeling negative emotions isn't wrong. But after a point, identify it, recognize it and refuse to let it control your life. It takes an immense amount of self-care to get out of that zone.   14. All of us have struggled with soreness, joint aches & high level of fatigue as an athlete. We constantly keep juggling, handling multiple external life stressors which affect our performance in the gym. We constantly keep finding ways in which we can improve our recovery and keep switching between new methods to improve our recovery. Are you someone who does all the above things? If yes, then in today's article, you will find immediate and actionable things which you can do to improve your recovery from any type of training. 1) Sleep The underdog which we all at a certain point of time compromise and neglect is sleep. Sleep has an immense magnitude of effect on one's recovery. Setting up a structured sleeping time helps us keep in check our Circadian rhythm which helps optimize our daily sleep pattern and hormones. If you are already doing the best you can to improve your sleep, try adding in supplements such as ZMA and melatonin for a short period of time. Optimal sleep intake for maximizing recovery: 6-8 hours / Not waking up to an alarm © Thinkstock Images 2) Nutrition Necessary calories, macronutrients and RDA of micronutrient requirements should be met in order to sustain training progress and recovery. Protein should be of utmost importance after your total daily calorie intake has been set up to help build and adapt to changes in the body caused by resistance training. Supplements such as whey protein, various vitamins, and minerals can come in handy if you are not able to meet these daily requirements. Calories may be increased for a brief period to maintenance level for someone in a fat loss phase and having major recovery issues. Optimal protein intake: 2-2.5gm per kg of bodyweight Micronutrients: 150% of RDA 3) Active Recovery Day Adding in light workouts or less intense training sessions between your hard sessions will help you alleviate some fatigue, reduce soreness by improving blood flow to target muscle group and manage weekly training fatigue. Simple low-intensity steady pace cardio can be done or similar lifts at lower intensity can be done on recovery days 4) Increase Work Capacity Increasing your total work done over time will help you recover and adapt better. This happens when the body gets accustomed to increased workload. To increase work capacity, aerobic cardio can be utilized 2-3 days a week at 60-70% HRM or at the start of a training block lower intensity & higher repetitions sets with reduced rest intervals can be useful. © Thinkstock Images 5) Soft Tissue Mobilization Use methods such as foam rolling and sports massages to release unwanted fascia buildup, elevate mood, reduce muscle soreness and decrease the sense of fatigue. 6) Fun-Based Activities Fun-based activities include activities apart from training which you enjoy (movies, parks, leisure) that can help deviate your mind from training on off days which will help reduce elevated cortisol levels. 7) Meditation And Mindfulness Our attitude on how we react to external stressors which can increase parameters such as heart rate and alert the body to switch between flight or fight mode add to total additional fatigue which can be avoided by being calm and handling situations well. To manage the same, engage in daily meditation or similar practices. If you are new to meditation, feel free to use guided meditation apps such as Headspace. 8) Training Check your training plan or consult with your coach about your training. Too often, beginners and intermediates make the mistake of going heavy and high volume all the time which leaves them injured or fatigued for the next training session. A training plan should be optimized for fatigue management and if you intend to make long-term progress consider periodizing your training plan. In the end, it's all about micromanaging every recovery tool and incorporating it to help reduce fatigue as much as possible to perform 1% better every session to accumulate progress That's it my fellow lifters. An extension of this Biblical gospel is the emergence of having a particular hobby as the central tenet for human survival. In biological terms, a hobby is the new kidney. You need a couple for proper survival! This article looks at the rise in the number of people trying to manufacture a fake kidney, sorry a fake hobby! 1. The DSLR Addict! The most common group of hobbyists are 'the DSLR addicts' who try to find natural beauty in everything; ranging from domesticated cockroaches to pig poop. This is followed up by a 300-word commentary on each picture on Instagram and personalised messages on WhatsApp. While this is bearable, it becomes creepy when 'the DSLR addict' starts taking pictures of young women in the name of candid camera, salivating over 'such a pataka'. Creep alert! 2. The Metrosexual Farmer After decades of struggling in cities, the countryside and farming seem to be making a comeback. Getting closer to mother nature is the epitome for this breed of hobbyists. Their social media feeds are filled up with pictures of cute puppies in clean looking agrarian fields with tags comprising of natural, organic, green, clean, fulfilment amidst other passion dosed phrases. Some of them are often caught trying to spot potato on the plant stem and gur on sugarcane. Wonder where the North Indian heat, the pesticides, the buffalos and the ugly tractors go? 3. The Palika Bazaar Of Cult Fit Do you have a friend who always poses with medals of having finished half marathons? Their captions tend to hover around, 'finished this race in record time' accompanied with a dozen selfies during the race. Quick question, how did you manage to finish your race in record time and manage to take so many selfies during that time? Also, why aren't you physically active on the remaining 364 days as indicated by your generous flab! A sister profile of this breed is the fake yoga guru! Beware! 4. The Great Lover Of Poverty After the rise in Xiaomi phones, philanthropy has really taken off! Everyone seems to be waking up nights trying to rake up ways to help undernourished children in sub-Saharan Africa. This breed of hobbyists loves to give back to society and hence start social media pages to garner donations for their funds. On a different note, did someone ask for a recommendation for philanthropic work for admission into an American business school? Such a kind-hearted soul! 5. The Nation Builder This group of nation builders can be summarised in a single neat sentence, 'my leader is more virile than yours'. This group of hobbyists can be characterised by excessive vitriolic, sorry passionate discussions on social media about their political leaders and their resultant nation building. This street fight multiplies disproportionately as seemingly sensible people start fighting like your mother and wife! 6. The Adventure Junkie Mankind has seen a massive adrenaline shift after the birth of Instagram. In terms of importance, the birth of Instagram has been chronicled in the annals of history along with the extinction of dinosaurs, the invention of the steam engine and World War 2. Adventures like rock climbing, para-gliding, rafting, bungee jumping, sky diving are so yesterday. The adventure junkie is always looking for the next high. The next in-thing on their list is to spend a night inside a coffin with a skeleton. Apparently, the Google Pixel phone takes excellent low light pictures! 7. The Motivator As you might be aware, India has fared very low on the happiness index. This has led to the birth of 'the motivator' whose single biggest mission is to make people realise their inner potential. To clarify, this is not the group of hobbyists that posts 'Good Morning,' 'I love you' and 'thank you' on all the family WhatsApp groups. The motivator genuinely believes in making people realise their potential; hence their social media feeds are filled up with, 'you can achieve', 'aim for the stars', 'follow your dreams', 'when the going gets tough, you get going' amidst other noble lines. As I write this, tears of gratitude are dripping down my face! 8. The Serial Entrepreneur Once seen as a huge deal breaker in securing matrimonial alliances, the tag of an entrepreneur has come a long way! In common parlance, throw a stone at someone on 100 feet road in Bangalore and you will spot a visionary entrepreneur. This group of hobbyists, who are under the inner torrential frenzy of adding value to everyone, are obsessed with changing the world and making humanity a better place! I am sorry, how many of your startups have ever made a dime in life? 9. The Cat Lover A cat has nine lives and hence it lands up on the ninth spot on this list. Once upon a time, cute pets were synonymous with the Vodafone pug. As the Indian economy has leapfrogged, cats seem to have taken centre stage. Screaming out, 'kitty kitty kitty' at restaurants is perceived to be extremely cool. This group of hobbyists indulges in putting up scintillating pictures of cat love, the success of their cats in a cat grooming race and pictures of cat manicure and pedicure! Please don't bark back at them in retaliation! 10. The Real Warren Buffett It is ironical that Warren Buffett made so much money while this group of hobbyists barely gets any publicity. This group is characterised by their know it all commentary on interest rates, stock market movement, hot picks, cool tips, lukewarm opportunities at dinner tables. It is unfortunate no one has ever asked them, 'mate, how much money have you made on your own?' In summary, there are many more such passionate groups of hobbyists; the enthusiastic historian, the artistic cake baker, the vintage dancer, the pseudo-intellectual educationist, the always right tarot card reader, etc. However, you should be careful while spilling your passion over to your immediate world. You don't want your circles to go, 'fake hobby alert'!

  19. Getting sore after an intense workout is common, but sometimes it may also become a reason to worry when you have to skip the gym the next day. A gradual increase in discomfort that occurs between 24 and 48 hours after an intense workout is referred to as the "delayed onset muscle soreness" or in other words DOMS. Mild muscle strain created by weight training creates microscopic tears to the muscle fibers, which in turn causes a bit of pain. The aches and pains should be minor and are simply indications that muscles are adapting to your fitness routine. Here are 5 tips that will help you in reducing soreness. 1) Try Moving Around I know that it would be the last thing you expect to do after an intense workout session. However, moving around will only ease off your soreness. If you keep on sitting around thinking that you are giving your body the 'relax' it is looking for, you are only going to get stiffer with time. Moving around like taking a walk and skipping the long hours on a chair will help in increasing the blood flow in your body and help you in reducing soreness in muscles. 2) Warming Up If you enter the gym and still feel sore from yesterday's workout session, getting a good warm-up before beginning your workout is a good idea. Warming up will help you with good blood supply to your muscles and also prepare your ligaments and tendons for an upcoming workout. © Breaking muscle 3) Post Workout Stretching I've rarely seen people performing static stretching after their workout. This is the biggest mistake you can make if you take your training seriously. Static stretching helps you with your post workout recovery. Even a ten minute of post workout static stretching can help you reduce soreness after your workout to a great extent. 4) Foam Rollers Foam rollers are the best way for self-myofascial release. When you perform foam rolling, the foam roller applies gentle sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue to eliminate pain and restore motion. The best way is to perform foam rolling before as well as after your workout. 5) Deep Tissue Massage Getting a deep tissue massage once in two weeks is also an effective way to reduce your soreness. Deep tissue massage is also helpful in getting rid of chronic pain. While the reasons you hear the trainers give are that your metabolism is too high or you are an ectomorph (does not really matter), the main reason for you struggling to gain weight is that you are NOT eating enough calories. So, it is time to ditch the oats and start including these foods in your diet- 1. Dates © Thinkstock A 100 gram serving of dates comes down to consuming 6-7 dates which are an easy task to do. The abundance of cricket players is a problem every nation would love to have, but it also means that a cricketer needs to slug it out to rise through the ranks before eventually realising the dream of playing for the national team. While many chase the elusive dream throughout their respective careers, only a handful manage to don the iconic blue jersey. But, it doesn't end there. Playing for the country is undeniably a matter of great pride for any sportsperson, but donning national colours and then delivering the goods on the international circuit are two different things. And, in November 2016, Shaw had his first taste of glory in Indian colours as part of the India U-19 team that won the youth Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. But, despite some impressive performances, not many were convinced about the youngster owing to his inexperience and tender age. And, that's exactly why Mumbai chief selector Milind Rege consulted Rahul Dravid - the India U-19 and India A coach - before drafting Shaw into the Mumbai squad for the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy semifinal against Tamil Nadu. Handed a debut in Ranji Trophy, Shaw, playing as an opener, repaid the faith of Rege and Dravid by slamming a second-innings that paved way for Mumbai's emphatic victory in the crucial tie. If his Ranji performance established him in the domestic circuit, Shaw's sensational debut in the 2017-18 Duleep Trophy earned him comparisons with great Sachin Tendulkar. Playing in his maiden Duleep Trophy game, the right-hander, at the age of 17, smashed a brilliant hundred for 'India Red' in the final to become the youngest player to score a debut ton in the tournament. © BCCL His majestic performances then earned him the India U-19 captaincy for the 2018 World Cup. And, once again, the right-hander didn't disappoint. His U-19 success was followed by an impressive Indian Premier League (IPL) stint with Delhi Daredevils (DD) earlier this year. The next opportunity for Shaw came in the form of India A call-up for the much-anticipated tour of England in July. This was the same time when Virat Kohli-led India were fighting it out against the Englishmen in the five-match Test series. With India's proven openers - Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay and KL Rahul - struggling to get going for their side, Shaw was expected to make his international debut in England. But, that didn't happen. © BCCL Shaw must have felt a bit disappointed, but the youngster knew he was closer to realising his dream of playing with the big boys. After patiently waiting for a while, Shaw was eventually handed his Test cap when he was included in India's playing XI against West Indies for the Rajkot Test. And, just like in the past, the 18-year-old grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Opening the innings for Team India, Shaw clobbered 134 off 154 balls in a strokeful innings that included 19 fours. The right-hander looked eager to make a mark from the word go. It was a crisp back-foot punch through the covers that saw him getting off the mark, while a cracking cut shot past point earned him his first boundary. The young prodigy notched up his fifty in 56 deliveries to become the youngest Indian to score a half-century on debut. But, he wasn't done. Shaw's hunger to make the day his own saw him reaching the three-figure mark in the 33rd over. In the process, the Mumbai lad etched his name in the history books as the youngest Indian to score a Test ton on debut. © BCCL His majestic innings eventually came to an end in the 51st over after a caught and bowled dismissal inflicted by Devendra Bishoo. But, by then, Shaw had wowed all with his wide array of strokes, thoroughly complimented by great temperament - the makings of a valuable Test batsman. On Thursday, the whole country knew that Shaw was going to make his international debut in Rajkot. The stage was set and the cameras were rolling as everyone anxiously waited to see India's most exciting young prospect in action. And, knowing Shaw, it was quite obvious to see the young gun up to the task. While his masterful innings established his reputation in international cricket, it also gave Team India and the selectors an extra option at the top of the order. But, most importantly, Shaw's knock - derived on the back of hard work and perseverance - served as a great precedent for all the budding cricketers who must learn the importance of making the limited opportunities count.
  24. A majority of the bros who lift have one single goal that is to be as swole as possible and have a bicep bigger than the other bros in the gym. Okay, that may be a bit exaggerated (or not) but the goal for most dudes is to build muscle and look buff. It is hardly ever that some dudes end up achieving this as they focus on all the wrong stuff and burn themselves to the ground. The mistakes these guys often do is to try to 'confuse' the muscle or buy some 'magical' supplements etc. © Thinksock None of this will work and for your muscle building agenda to work, you need to have a few things in place: 1. Eat The most overlooked aspect of muscle-building phase. For building muscle, you need to eat in a calorie surplus. Doing this will ensure your body performs its daily functions and still has some calories left to build muscle. If you are not eating in a calorie surplus consistently, you are simply wasting your time. And again, by calorie surplus, it does not mean you eat as many calories as possible. Even that works, but you would be bulky in a way you do not like. Start with a 10% surplus and slowly add calories to it as and when needed. 2. Work Out Using A Full Range Of Motion Jerk bicep curls or half squats will not really do much. To gain muscle, you need to load and then overload your muscle progressively. To ensure that you are properly recruiting muscle when lifting and want to grow maximally, a full range of motion is paramount. It may initially even mean lowering weights and if that is needed, do so. 3. Get Strong A wrong notion that bodybuilders need to only workout in the hypertrophy range and keep the pump on exists. There is nothing wrong with working out in that range but just that range, it is a mistake. Think of it logically, if you get stronger, you can lift more weights and you can later lift heavier in the hypertrophy range as well. 4. Vary Your Rep Ranges For Different Exercises Your body has different types of muscle fibers that respond to different stimuli. Do some strength work in the 4 to 8 rep range, some hypertrophy work in the 12 to 15 rep range and even some high rep training in the 20+ rep ranges for isolation exercises. And when you do this, ensure that you are training heavy. If you set out for an exercise with 12 reps, you should not end the set with enough strength to push 6 more reps. If that happens, you are not lifting heavy enough. © Thinksock 5. Train With A Higher Frequency Do not waste your time doing one body part once a week. Studies have shown that your muscle protein synthesis rates drop to baseline after 48 hours of training them. If your goal is maximal muscle growth, waiting whole 7 days before lifting again or training it again means lost opportunity for gains. Start with a 2x frequency for hitting every muscle per week and then slowly push it upwards as needed. Everyone might have seen the internet famous picture of The Rock's cheat meal after five to six months of strict dieting where he ate 12 pancakes, 4 double dough pizzas, an entire tray of brownies, and a jug of milk. Basically, all the junk food a mountain can stomach in a sitting. Just reduce the amount of food being eaten and insert every weekend instead of the five to six months and that is you. Every week, a majority of people on a diet do the deluded 'deserved cheat day' and wreck their progress and have average physiques all their life. Either they are constantly deviating between diet days and cheat days or they have totally given up on their physique goals. © YouTube Truth be told, the concept of cheat days is pretty shitty and it does not help anyone! Reason #1: You Start Labeling Food Items As 'Clean' Or 'Dirty' The concept of cheat days means you label certain foods as 'good' or 'clean' and certain foods as 'bad' or 'dirty' and this misses the entire picture. Any food in isolation does not have beneficial or harmful effects on your body composition. It will always come down to calories and macronutrients. Yes, some foods are less nutritious and some are more nutritious but by themselves alone, they do not mean anything. It is the entirety of your diet. You can still have an average physique or stay fat by just eating those 'clean' or 'good' foods if you are eating a lot of calories via them. And by this labeling of 'good' and 'bad', you can invite the creation of a terrible relationship with food in the long term. Reason #2: Cheat Days Make You Fat (Mostly) By having these so-called deserved cheat days every weekend, you are eating a shit load of calories and undoing your progress. Let's assume that your maintenance is close to 2200 kcals and to lose weight, you are eating 1700 kcals per day. You follow that strictly from Monday to Friday and then Saturday and Sunday are 4000 kcals each. By doing this, you are effectively eating calories over and above your maintenance calories for the entire week and those extra calories are going to be stored somewhere. In short, you are going to gain fat. Reason #3: You Can Incorporate These Treats Or Foods Into Your Routine If you get your basics about dieting right, i.e. understand calories and macronutrients at a basic level, this will change the entire dieting situation for you. Every food has a certain amount of calories coming from the grams of protein, fats and carbohydrates in it. Yes, it holds true for both of your 'clean' and 'dirty' foods. You can moderate the food that you like and tend to binge on into your routine regularly. Having majority (70 to 80%) of calories and macronutrients for the day from the more nutritious food items and the remaining calories (20 to 30%) coming from these less nutritious foods that you like binging on. © YouTube This way, you can have a better food relationship and enjoy the dieting process more instead of doing these shitty cheat days and staying average.
