  1. The thing about our country is that it is knee-deep in a pool of stereotypes, orthodox traditions and customs most of which pull it decades back when it comes to being progressive. Which is why, on the rare occasion that someone tries to break past them and normalize what the society may have termed taboo, we are more than happy to cheer them on. © Emaar Films International And even though the film at hand here, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, promised to help educate as well normalize the society towards surrogacy, it ended up doing something else entirely. Which was to misinform and reduce women to baby-making machines. © Emaar Films International You see, back in 2001, the concept of using a surrogate mother in cases where the woman can’t conceive, would neither be understood nor entertained. But after the movie was released, nothing changed apart from the fact that people hated surrogacy more. Why, you ask? Read on... © Emaar Films International The movie starts with a basic introduction to Raj and Priya’s characters played by Salman Khan and Rani Mukherjee, respectively. The two are happily married and living in a joint family, one which inhabits a grandson-obsessed grandfather who can’t stop pestering Priya for a kid. © Emaar Films International Being the ideal daughter in-law she is, she complies, gets pregnant, only to have a miscarriage and find out she cannot conceive. © Emaar Films International The doctor advises the couple to opt for surrogacy and not tell the family about Priya not being able to conceive. Why? Because apparently an infertile woman = bad wife = bad daughter in law = shame on the family. © Emaar Films International Now at this point, you’d assume that the couple would go through a procedure of sorts to opt for surrogacy. But nope, not even caring to get their facts right about what it actually means - an assisted birth where the intended parents work with another woman who agrees to carry their child in her womb through means of artificial insemination, Raj and Priya assume it requires forming sexual relations instead and shake on it. How, or why? It’s beyond us... © Emaar Films International After Raj inappropriately asks every other woman he meets to become the surrogate, the desperate couple settles on a prostitute to become their surrogate because this movie is all about feeding into existing stereotypes anyway. Madhu aka Priety Zinta agrees to do it in exchange for money and is flown to Switzerland with the couple to be “groomed” which is code for being impregnated by Raj. © Emaar Films International After several failed attempts, Priya finally manages to isolate both Madhu and Raj in a room, drugs her own husband and leads him to have *** with Madhu in order to get her pregnant. Now, while the movie may call this surrogacy, we can only it a very weird fetish of wanting your husband to have *** with a woman of your choosing. © Emaar Films International Madhu gets pregnant, Raj and Priya lie to their family to say Priya has gotten pregnant again and everything is going according to plan. At one point, Raj’s perverted friend nearly molests Madhu because he knows she was a prostitute and assumes that *** workers are DTF any second of any day, consent be damned. Of course Raj steps in, beats the friend, saves Madhu and in turn, Madhu falls in love with Raj. © Emaar Films International Raj and Priya’s family, in the meantime, surprise them by coming to Switzerland and also finding a very pregnant Madhu living with them, who is introduced as their friend. The family decides to take care of Madhu as well as Priya, since both are pregnant and even decides to throw a baby shower for Priya back in India. © Emaar Films International Things hit the fan when Priya decides to send Madhu to the baby shower as herself by covering her face with a ghoonghat. The entire experience, hospitality, love, care and attention makes Madhu emotional, as she realises she can’t give up her baby anymore for she’s grown attached to it. The only emotion that ACTUALLY does occur during a lot of surrogacies and was shown right in the film. © Emaar Films International Madhu flees from the house, dumping all of the money offered to her on the bed, only to be confronted by a very frantic Priya at a train station, where the climax takes place. As the women argue where Priya begs for the baby and Madhu refuses to give it up, Priya slaps Madhu as soon as she admits to having fallen in love with Raj. Because apparently, that was inappropriate and not forcing your husband to sleep with a hooker. © Emaar Films International By the time Raj arrives for damage control, Madhu has gone into labour and taken to the hospital where the doctor says only one out of the two can be saved - either the child or the mother. Priya chooses to save Madhu. But because it is a Bollywood film where happy endings are as important as having an item number, both the mother and the baby survive. © Emaar Films International Madhu is touched by Priya’s kindness and gives up her child to the couple, while the extended family is lied to again as they’re told Madhu’s child was stillborn. Madhu promises to not go back to prostitution and bids a happy goodbye to Raj, who sensed that she loved him. © Emaar Films International All in all, people would call this movie an emotional roller-coaster and a crash course in surrogacy. But only in the way that it actually crashed and burned on the concept, because whatever the f**k it was, it wasn’t surrogacy. If anything, it was a rather weird and unusual case of throupling. © Emaar Films International Not to forget the entire plot that furthered the problematic stereotype of deeming women good and ideal ONLY if they’re able to give the family a child. The End. View the full article
  2. Shahid Kapoor’s debut film in the industry, Ishq Vishq was released back in 2003 when both - the moral compass and a woman’s consent were lost concepts in society, made for an utterly unflattering, sexist and problematic film of its time. Of course, when it was released I was only 7-years-old and didn’t understand much (or at all), but over the years as I have watched this college romance again and again, I’ve come to realise this movie was not as much about ‘Ishq’ as we were made to believe... © Tips Industrries The movie starts with a scene at Rajiv aka Shahid Kapoor’s home where his father is busy getting distracted by the over-sexualised maid ‘Kamla’ who is obviously mopping the floor with a visible cleavage while Rajiv’s father conveniently blames women and their parents for letting girls wear short or revealing clothes, which according to him, is what distracts men in the first place. And that right there sets the tone for the entire film - sexist and problematic. It’s surprising how consistent they were with the theme all throughout the movie. © Tips Industrries Rajiv, on the other hand, is busy reading porn magazines in the washroom, while his best friend Mambo is hitting on the maid with jingles that are as cheap and lame as the plot of the movie is going to be. © Tips Industrries Soon we’re taken to the ‘Spencer College’, where we establish that the only way you earn a good social reputation is by having a girlfriend if you’re a boy, or by putting out if you’re a girl. © Tips Industrries Hence, the behen ji status for Miss Payal aka Amrita Rao, who is looked down upon because she doesn’t date. Such a sinner, this one! © Tips Industrries Payal is madly in love with Rajiv, but the little porn addict is too busy pining over other girls in the college, you know, the ones wear shorter clothes and are simply presumed to date and put out easily. © Tips Industrries By this time, it is clear that the sole purpose of making this film was to be able to objectify women on the big screen. And another element that does it well is the entry of a crass and cringy ‘love guru’ Rocky who is here to give all sorts of f**ked up and misogynistic advice to guys for being able to get into women’s pants. And by advice, I mean suggesting to lie. #AllTheCoolKidsDoIt © Tips Industrries An offer that Rajiv soon takes up, when the ‘cool guys gang’ invite him and his friend Mambo to a road trip *provided* that they both get girls with them. Seriously, the obsession that this movie had with girls is annoying and borderline disturbing. © Tips Industrries Since loser Rajiv cannot possibly get any girl, he decides to take a safe bet with Payal, the one girl who has been in love with him since school. Because if we are touching base on all stereotypes why not on the old and classic ‘good girls love bad boys’ cliche too? After a very minimal struggle, in fact after just saying one very non-convincing ‘I love you’, Payal agrees to date Rajiv. © Tips Industrries After a few songs and panoramic shots, Rajiv and Payal’s equation starts escalating. In fact, at one point, Rajiv self-invites himself to her house and makes her deeply uncomfortable with his physical advances. Yet another red flag that the blinded-by-love-Payal fails to see. Maybe because she is too busy seeing the moon from a channi on Karvachauth, a fast she keeps for her 2-minute-old boyfriend... The time for the much-awaited road trip comes. 9 people ride in one open jeep, and both logic and plot start taking a hike from here on... © Tips Industrries They arrive, they party, they chill and everything is fairly decent until horny Romeo Rajiv tries to force himself on Payal who has made it clear she doesn’t want to do anything but hold hands and sing songs with him. Obviously, the guy doesn’t listen, crosses the line into emotionally blackmailing her and nearly molesting her. And when Payal slaps him, it unleashes the misogynist within Rajiv as he proves himself to be the wannabe insensitive f**kboi we always presumed he was. The trip ends, but sadly the movie goes on. © Tips Industrries Everyone bumps into each other again at the cafeteria, Rajiv’s friends stand in support of Payal and Rajiv, on the other hand, stands knee-deep in the pool of his self-inflated ego. Which he would only put aside if Payal kissed him in front of everyone. Because horniness has no time or place or decency. Payal naturally, doesn’t, and our protagonist Rajiv turns into the antagonist, vowing to date the hottest girl on campus. © Tips Industrries Enters Alisha aka Shehnaz Treasury, who makes waves in the college with her fake accent and short skirts. Because that is all you need to have as a woman to be looked at with desire. © Tips Industrries With some b-grade advice from the love guru to again lie, Rajiv manages to lure Alisha into a relationship that is as taxing as Shehnaz’s overacting. © Tips Industrries Things take a toxic turn when Rajiv, just like his father, blames Alisha for her choice of clothes after she is eve teased by a bunch of kids on the road. © Tips Industrries Soon after a couple of awkward run-ins, Rajiv realises he is at fault and still in love with Payal. Could the plot be any more predictable? Rajiv’s jealousy to see Mambo and Payal together pushes him to confront his feelings for Payal, but in the worst way possible. © Tips Industrries Mambo and Rajiv get into an awkward duel over Payal and Alisha, where, once again, Payal is blamed for ruining everything whereas Alisha was the one who sparked the fire. But karma gets right back at her when Rajiv says ‘I love you’ to Alisha, followed by ‘Payal’s name instead of Alisha’s...Oops! © Tips Industrries Following the lead of all other Bollywood movies, the movie ends with Rajiv and Payal getting back together where once again, all it takes for Payal to take him back is one more unconvincing and rather offensive speech by Rajiv. © Tips Industrries Of course, Payal forgives him despite realising she is too good for him. Because, toxicity > everything else. The End. View the full article
  3. It was rather painful to watch the way Roger Federer was struggling to win points against Poland’s 24-year-old Hubert Hurkacz in the centre-court during the quarter-final of Wimbledon 2021. Losing the match in straight sets for the first time since an opening-round exit against Mario Ancic in 2002, but the Swiss Maestro took the 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-0 defeat in good stride. View this post on Instagram The questions around whether this defeat would lead to the end of the illustrious career of Federer, who will be turning 40 next month, have since been surrounding him. Normally, his smiling face and a cheeky answer are enough to get past the doubts of his return. However, this time around, it was the uncertainty in Roger’s voice that seemed worrisome for his fans. During the post-match press conference, Federer was asked the same question once again. While he ensured that he will not be rushed into retirement, whether or not he will return to the English grand slam, remains up in the air. Will Roger Federer Return To Wimbledon 2022? "I don't know. I really don't know. I've got to regroup," said Federer when asked if his Wimbledon career was over. "With everything that comes after Wimbledon, we were always going to sit down and talk about it because clearly now Wimbledon is over. I got to take a few days. Just see, Okay, what do I need to do to get in better shape so I can be more competitive." "Clearly there's still a lot of things missing in my game that maybe 10, 15, 20 years ago were very simple and very normal for me to do,' Federer added. "Of course I would like to play it again, but at my age you're just never sure what's around the corner." Will Roger Federer Retire After Wimbledon 2021?"I will take my time, not feel rushed by you guys or anybody else. I got to take my time, take the right decision, the one decision I want to take and where I feel most comfortable. The team and me were actually very happy I made it as far as the quarters here. That's how it goes. I'll be fine. I have perspective about it, so it's all good." His unsure reply created a certain sense of worry in the hearts of the millions of tennis fans from all over the world: That is the first time he's ever said it with that tone . Hope he comes back atleast for one last dance. With that being said, making the QFs in Wimbledon at the age of 39 is by itself a remarkable feat. He can hold his head high. What an ambassador for the game. — uhhrjun (@SezJuan_) July 7, 2021Never say goodbye @rogerfederer https://t.co/xWr8PesjgY — Miguel Jiménez (@MiguelJimenez84) July 7, 2021I really hope he does come back to @Wimbledon https://t.co/yTsBcoGA71 — LakshmiRamanath (@LakshmiRamanath) July 7, 2021I sincerely hope it's not the last match he's played at the centre court of #Wimbledon https://t.co/0NuIKWWQTO — Vivek Singh (@singhvivek83) July 7, 2021I’m… not okay https://t.co/BUxgeDhvCG pic.twitter.com/ArdbuEHgs2 — Alyson (@AlysonP7) July 7, 2021 View the full article
  4. When it comes to gender disparity in terms of wages, Bollywood definitely deserves a mention. It’s no secret that male actors are paid way more than female ones, thus Bollywood directors end up making movies focusing on the male characters. Truth be told, we are far from achieving the true goal of giving equal wages. It’s a bitter pill to swallow and even after actresses like Deepika Padukone shedding light on it, it continues to be the norm. Just recently, reports of Kareena Kapoor Khan demanding a hike in fee for playing Sita spread like wildfire and people were quick to tag her as a ‘selfish’ actor, and even demonized her. Taapsee Pannu recently shared her opinions on the pay disparity between male and female actors. She said that female actors who ask for more money are seen as ‘difficult’, while if a male actor hikes his fee, it is celebrated because he is climbing the ladders of success. View this post on InstagramSpeaking to The National Bulletin, Taapsee said, “If a female actor asks more, she is termed difficult and problematic and if a man asks more it’s a mark of his success. The difference is the men who started with me earn 3-5 times more than what I do. And the gap keeps increasing as we go in higher star category.” She added that the audience doesn’t celebrate female actors as much as male actors. “Even now we struggle with budgets. Everyone hears that since it’s a female-driven film budget will have to be slashed and that’s because our returns are always unfair in comparison to our male counterparts. And the audience is a big reason behind that,” she said. View this post on InstagramOn the work front, Taapsee Pannu’s Haseen Dillruba is now streaming on Netflix. In a statement, Taapsee had earlier said, “Haseen Dilruba was a film I had a very strong gut feeling about the day I heard the basic idea from Kanika. Unfortunately, I wasn’t the first choice for the film and it came to me after all their options were exhausted. The good old saying that, if it’s meant for you it will come to you stands true for this case. It’s not just a beautifully written mystery, it has such wonderful characters involved which is candy in an actor’s hands. I am glad I got to experiment with my look and performance with this one because I am definitely not the go-to person for this kind of character conventionally and we all love to take risks here.” View this post on InstagramHave you watched the film yet? 5. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, one of the highest-grossing Indian films in Indian cinema, has often been described as a story of unrequited love. But if we’re being reaaally honest, it is a lot more than that... © SLB Films In simple words - how some women back in the day could take a free Euro trip to meet their boyfriends while having their husbands pay for it. The movie is a clear cut love triangle between Salmaan Khan, Aishwarya Rai and a khatta nimbooda. While Ajay Devgn is also there. Enter Sameer, walking through the middle of a desert, accompanied by the spirit of his dad. After a pretty dramatic showdown between him and the thin air that he calls dad, he finally reaches the house of Pundit Darbar and is greeted by his family which is actually the size of an entire village. No really, it should be declared a zilla parishad. © SLB Films Meanwhile, Nandini is busy throwing a fit about giving up her room to Sameer for the duration of his stay. However, within the first 5 seconds of their meeting, Sameer manages to woo her with his pathetic Gujarati and indulges in what can only be called as some weird a** flirting. One that involved some nasty nimbooda talk. Pundit Darbaar puts Sameer to a random singing test at the dinner table, where he screams HEY till the audience goes deaf. Obviously, he passed the test. As the hormonally raging chemistry between Sameer and Nandini grows, at family functions of all places, Sameer even uses the Italy card to satisfy his foot fetish after reading Nanidini’s foot instead of her hand. Things go south when Sameer tries to grab Nandini in the middle of a celebration, despite her resisting it, and ends up getting slapped by her. Oh but, how dare she! © SLB Films Enter our second protagonist Vanraj aka Ajay Devgn who can’t stop drooling over Ash as she jams on nimbooda. Going by the ‘love at first sight’ logic, he asks his sister to send a rishta to Nandini’s parents. Little does he know, catfishing awaits. Meanwhile, a still butthurt Sameer in a desperate attempt to seek some attention, starts eating chillies. Guess who wouldn’t want to be the one using the washroom after he does? © SLB Films After Nandini fears getting pregnant merely after a kiss with Sameer, he promises to ask her hand. Which obviously doesn’t matter because all chattees gun have matched with Vanraj. At the same time, remember the cousin who had an affair but got married to someone else? Yeah, she comes back home and screws up the game for poor Nandini. A lot of drama, family politics and an unhealthy speech about how ‘women must get married according to their parents and once they do, become a slave to their husbands’ later, Nandini tragically gets married to Vanraj while Sameer is banished from the house. All this while, Nandini's father acts as the one whose life has been ruined, because #MisogynisticFatherComplex. © SLB Films Over at Vanraj’s house, he realises what big bag of poop he has stepped into. As he recovers from the hurt of KLPD he received on the wedding night, he walks in on Nandini reading Sameer’s love letters. Upon finding the truth about his wife and her Italian beau, being the nice and spineless guy he is, he decided to unite them. Because in Bhansali productions and Indian society alike, only sacrifice = true love. Nandini giddy’s up for her honeymoon/quest and arrives in Italy without so much as an ounce of remorse for Vanraj, or a picture of Sameer. Some effort she was putting into finding him. After a lot of awkward and near-miss encounters with Sameer, the couple that had better chances of coming across as brother and sister, find Sameer’s mother. An over-excited Helen greets them and invites Nandini to attend her son’s big show and profess her love. © SLB Films Nearing the end, as Vanraj realises he has no scope of even a pity hug from the woman, let alone anything else, he takes her to the show to unite her with Sameer. Before he could say anything, even a 'thanks' to her for ruining his life, she is hurried off by Helen. Now, after a 2-and-a-half-hour buildup for THIS very moment, while talking to Sameer, Nandini changes to declare that she loves Vanraj instead! Who is her one true meal-ticket through Europe and could probably take her to meet more of her lovers if need be. The final showdown takes place on a bridge where Nandini runs towards Vanraj and basically tells him how now that the chase is over, so is her interest and that she is ready to play wife again. © SLB Films Sameer is still talking to the sky he assumes to be his dad, blaming him yet again, for not being able to trap Nandini. The End. View the full article
  6. uring the tea break of Day 3 of the ICC World Test Championship final, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan opened up about an incident early in his cricketing life when Sourav Ganguly decided to be honest with him at the absolute worst time possible. According to CricTracker Pathan explained that it was just before he was supposed to make his international debut against the Australians, the then team captain, Ganguly walked up to him and straightaway told him “I did not want you in the team.” “Dada thought that I was too young as a 19-year-old to be playing in Australia and that I would be challenged,” Pathan went on to explain the skipper’s reservations towards Pathan, who was just 19-years-old at the time but went on to dismiss Adam Gilchrist with a ripper of a yorker in just his second match. Heading into the series, Pathan was surrounded by doubts and insecurities but by the time the series debutant was back home, he was the fresh youngblood, everyone was ready to back with all their heart. In the two matches that he played, Pathan managed to pick four wickets, including a three-wicket haul at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The southpaw not only dealt with the demons in his own head but in fact went on to get an apology by his captain, who admitted to have wrongly assessed Pathan’s talents, skills and mental preparation. “He (Ganguly) came up to me and said how he was wrong in his views. That really shocked me, because very rarely does a skipper talk about the selection and then admits his mistake,” Pathan recalled. View this post on Instagram Pathan would go down the history of Indian cricketer as one of the most talented cricketers who had the skills to take the burden of the team on both sides of the field - with the ball and the bat, but not being able to live up to his own expectations due to overwork and a series of unfortunate and ill-timed injuries. Nonetheless, ever since he has made his transition as a cricket analyst and commentator, Pathan has received nothing but unconditional support from his fans and continues to be one of the most respected members of the Indian cricket community to date. 23. Suresh Raina retired from international cricket alongside one of his best friends and Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Independence Day 2020. And despite missing out on the 13th season of the Indian Premier League, the man does not seem to be out of touch. However, today, we’re going to talk about the one thing that makes Raina an extremely popular player in the tournament - his honesty. During the 16th over of the match between CSK and SunRisers’ Hyderabad, Raina attempted a catch to dismiss hitter Manish Pandey from the strike and curb the 2016 champions’ hopes of building a huge total at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi. Brilliant from Suresh Raina to straightway tell the ball reached him on bounce to avoid wasting time. pic.twitter.com/Tgcke3a0Z2 — Mufaddal Vohra (@mufaddal_vohra) April 28, 2021 But the southpaw quickly got on his feet and confessed that he did not make it to the ball in time and that he had captured it only after it had bounced on the surface once. Raina’s honesty not only showed the kind of athlete he is, but also helped to avoid a potential Rs 12 lakh fine on his captain’s head for causing a ‘delay in the game’. Raina fans were completely impressed but his truthfulness and expressed their admiration for the 34-year cricketer: How some hate this man — Sai Santhosh (@SaiSant14950528) April 28, 2021That is to save 12 lakhs of Dhoni — Dark Passenger (@tweet_umpire) April 28, 2021Defending his captain to get ban from slow over rate — Amit Ruturaj (@_REAL_AMiT_) April 28, 2021Dhoni k 12 lakh bacha diye — Pankaj Singh (@Newly_Awaken) April 28, 2021 And even though the catch was dropped, CSK went on to have a great match, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad’s best performance in the league so far (75 off 44). Completing the task of chasing 171 runs in nine balls and seven wickets to spare, the three-time champions once again found themselves at the top of the IPL Points Table with five consecutive victories. Such a high level of performance feels special for the Chennai franchise especially after missing out on the IPL Playoffs for the very first time ever back in 2020. Here’s what MS Dhoni had to say about the team’s brilliant bounce-back. View this post on Instagram "I think addressing the problem (on what's been different for CSK this year?)," Dhoni said at the post-match presentation. "Whenever you start the tournament, you may or may not face issues in playing XI. The earlier you settle the better. Another factor was 5-6 months we were out of cricket. Nothing was allowed. It's not that you could go on your own and practice. That also makes it difficult. Change of quarantine was slightly longer. A lot of factors." "Overall if I have to sum it up, the players have taken more responsibility this year. You will be facing adverse things but ultimately it boils down to how each individual rises to the occasion and gives the extra 10 per cent for the team," he explained. View the full article
