  3. Last month, Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia was left disheartened after being ignored for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, which was eventually awarded to Virat Kohli and Mirabai Chanu. Punia had won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games earlier this year, but still, he was snubbed by the selection panel. Thus, there was no surprise to see a disappointed Punia threatening to take legal action against the move. For an athlete who worked day in and day out to eventually bring laurels for the country, Punia's misfortune to somehow miss out on India's highest sporting honour was quite shocking. The failure of a country to acknowledge the hardships of their sportspersons surely sets a bad precedent, often leaving the athletes demotivated. But, Punia is an athlete of a different breed - one that believes in responding where it matters the most. Channelling all his disappointment and aggression, Punia gave a befitting reply to the Indian selection committee - who ignored him for the Khel Ratna - with a historic performance in the 2018 World Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The Indian wrestler secured a hard-fought silver medal in the men's 65kg freestyle category. © Twitter/@wrestling Continuing his fine run this year, the 24-year-old had his eyes set on the gold after staving off a late threat from Cuba's Alejandro Valdes Tobier in the semis, to secure his berth in the 65kg summit clash. However, the Indian wrestler couldn't get the better of his Japanese counterpart Takuto Otoguro before losing the final bout 9-16. The coveted final saw Punia trailing 0-5 early on, but the Indian wrestler made a commendable comeback to improve the scoreline 6-7 at the end of the first period. But, it was eventually Punia's 19-year-old opponent who held his nerve with a couple of telling moves. Otoguro continued to attack Punia's legs in the second period and extended his lead to secure a comfortable win in the end. © Twitter/@wrestling A gold-medal finish also made Otoguro Japan's youngest world champion. He surpassed the legendary Yuji Takada who had become the youngest world champion for Japan at the age of 20 in 1974. While the Japanese wrestler made his mark on the international stage, Punia, too, etched his name in the history books despite missing out on the gold. Owing to his silver-medal performance, Punia became the first Indian wrestler to win two medals at the World Championships. He had previously won a bronze medal in the 2013 edition of the same tournament while plying his trade in the 60kg category. He is also only the fourth Indian ever to make it to the World Championships' gold-medal bout. I want to dedicate this silver medal at World Wrestling Championships to the people died in the tragic Amritsar train accident. My deep condolences to their families. pic.twitter.com/oSsg3ABA2c — Bajrang Punia (@BajrangPunia) October 22, 2018 If his historic performance wasn't enough, Punia's heartfelt gesture to dedicate his silver medal to the victims of the tragic train accident in Amritsar, further enhanced his reputation, not only as an athlete, but also as a great human being.
  4. Cricket is not a sport in India, it is a religion (I have said and heard this statement so many times that I have lost count now.) And the religious followers aka Cricket fans aren't just limited to India, they are spread across the world. Talking about fans, Indian skipper Virat Kohli enjoys a crazy fan following and is one of the most followed and loved cricketers in the world. In fact, Virat Kohli's fans loved him and lauded his gesture when he invited his Sri Lankan fan to his reception last year. However, this 5-year-old girl was left disheartened and upset, when her favourite cricketer Virat Kohli ignored her and walked away without meeting her. © Reuters Team India, which is currently prepping up for the five-match Test series against England that starts from August 1, recently finished the three-day practice session with Essex in Chelmsford. It was there that his youngest fan was eagerly waiting to meet him. In fact, she waited for hours trying to get close to him, not once but twice and the security officers too tried to help her in the quest to meet her hero. Divided loyalties from my Daughter. Essex is her team, Virat is her hero, hence the RCB top (although Essex shorts!) Can't wait to see her face when she sees him Wednesday @imVkohli pic.twitter.com/w1hjPZx5cC — Cricket tweets (@_stavros1) July 23, 2018 In a series of tweets shared by the kid's father, it was explained how the entire story panned out. This young fan of RCB waited for hours just to say 'Hello' to Kohli, but he ignored her and walked away. But Jasprit Bumrah noticed the dejected girl and brought a smile on her face by meeting her in person and clicking pictures with her. In fact, when he got to know that her father is a huge fan of Mumbai Indians, Bumrah gifted him an MI cap. Daughter waited twice for over an hour to meet @imVkohli her hero and he just walked passed even when your security politely asked him to stop for her. Can't fault your security persons who were fantastic with her. But she'll never get a better chance to see her hero. Real shame pic.twitter.com/0UDBVpR0XH — Cricket tweets (@_stavros1) July 25, 2018 Had Virat Kohli met her, the narrative would have been totally different, but the fact that he totally ignored her presence and walked away without greeting her made someone else the much-deserved hero of this story. And he is none other than Jasprit Bumrah. Virat is her hero but this great man made time for her @Jaspritbumrah93 and as a big Mumbai Indians fan myself I couldn't be prouder @mipaltan thank you BOOM BOOM BUMRAH pic.twitter.com/zLyqGVQNWx — Cricket tweets (@_stavros1) July 25, 2018 Thank you kindly @Jaspritbumrah93 this cap will be forever cherished @mipaltan #ESSvIND #India #Mumbai pic.twitter.com/cy12u21bWZ — Cricket tweets (@_stavros1) July 25, 2018 From travelling miles on a bicycle to attend a match, breaking security and entering the field to touch their feet, queuing outside their house just to catch a glimpse of their idol, to getting their names or faces tattooed on their bodies; our cricketers enjoy some crazy and insane fan following. But that moment is priceless when their idols acknowledge, appreciate and reciprocate to their sweet gestures.
  5. Laptops in India have always been fairly expensive when compared to their counterparts in other markets. The government levies high import duty on computers being imported to India, and because the market here is a lot smaller, companies haven't set up manufacturing facilities in the country like it has been for mobiles. 7. India's varied and diverse culture does make it more ineffable to understand most of the cultural practices that take place, for most of the people residing here. We could call India a progressive society, but there are moments of weakness experienced by subservient people across the board, who use archaic ways to find and bring happiness into their lives. We are all emotional beings and if we didn't have a sane mind in place, we would always be driven by our emotions. Most times, we question logic but when logic fails to give us rational answers, we turn to other realms of reality, for stability and the satisfaction of our own ego. Once we turn the other way and defy logic, it's easier for external influences to seep through and justify our general inquisitiveness. All I am trying to say is, sometimes our emotions allow influences to mould us in ways which seem more comfortable and we get carried away with such things. © Twitter Black magic and occult practices are such things, that take us far away from reality to form a comfortable nest in our own mind. Black magic is an art that feeds on people's insecurities and leads them through blind faith, to find hope and allegiance with something, that is way beyond their realm of understanding. I am not here to criticise the practice in any way or form. I am here to give a third person's neutral perspective on what this art entails and if there is any science to justify these practices. In the recent Burari (New Delhi) case, we saw this practice unfold and take shape of a dark entity, which ultimately led to the death of the 11 members of a happy Delhi based family (or so what it seemed). But knowing the ground reality to such practices is a different thing altogether. The family indulged in dark art practices or black magic to attain salvation from 'worldly problems'. But that's the problem with society today; the fairly elaborate escapist view they have about life. What Is Black Magic? We live in a dual world. By that I mean, there is always a duality in everything we see, hear, understand and do. For instance, there is good and evil, happiness and sadness and, of course, light and dark. The understanding of all the negatives out of this duality and using that negativity to one's advantage to possibly cause others harm, through cultish practices is what black magic really is. Black magic is conducive to all negative forces, which become easier to control when you're practicing these dark arts. Lots of occult practices which delve into black magic, worship or believe in the existence of the devil and it's variants like demons, evil spirits, and dark entities. © Thinkstock The exuberant control of this form of magic is said to be phenomenal. If you're a victim of this practice or have it done to you, then it is believed, it takes a certain amount of time to rid the effect it can have on you. And most of the time, the effect is negative. The people who indulge in this vicarious form of darkness, usually do it to fix their own problems and pave a smoother way for themselves and for their future. Quick Fix? I met a woman once who used this practice often for her own good and welfare. I am not sure if she was harming any other being but she would worship a dark entity just to get ahead in her career. According to her, irrational thinking propels such people to opt for these practices and that's what she was doing. She would ritualistically do certain things daily to make small changes in her life. Sometimes they worked but she believed to never tamper with the art, if it didn't work, because chances are it can backfire miserably. © YouTube But we're a superstitious lot. We're afraid to face consequences emerging out of our own reality and we love to shield our problems through an alternative mean. For example, visiting a family pundit has become a norm in most families. The pundit will probably read your Janam Patri and ask you to do certain things differently, which are beneficial for the future. Maybe he'll ask you to wear particular stones to evade the grasp of darkness upon you. "I went to a family pundit when I came back from studying abroad. My mother forced me to go see him, to figure my future out job wise. He studied my kundli (birth chart) and said I would have some difficulties adjusting here but I will find a great job within 2 months and will be very comfortable. He also asked me to wear a topaz on my middle finger for prosperity. It's been almost 8 months now and I haven't found a decent job yet. It's all rubbish if you don't believe in it." - Rahul (name changed). © Thinkstock Well, not digressing from the main subject, but eventually it boils down to whether or not you believe in things like these, to even give them the fair benefit of the doubt. Only when times are tough, people opt for such alternatives, to get them out of their fallible misery. Psychological Manipulation? The two words may sound heavy and impactful but if you delve deeper into what they mean, you will understand the underlying crux of people easily falling for these practices and blind faiths, all around the world. Someone who is going through a tough time in life is mostly emotionally weak and vulnerable. It's because people tend to use their heart and their mind to resolve issues that surround them Occult practices prey on emotionally weak and psychologically withdrawn people to garner restoration of this particular faith. It's easier to seep into their psyche and drive them towards believing in practices that can help them recover from their suffering. The phenomena can loosely be termed as 'blind faith' and once you're in it, it's difficult to get out. "My friend is a cult follower of a sect that worships the dark arts. I know that because she took me to one of their gatherings once and everyone had to wear black and chant something rhythmic, which didn't sound good to the ears. I pretended to be interested but honestly, I was freaking out. But that's not all. I saw that people were blindly following a tantric baba there and doing whatever he asked them to do, in the name of faith. It seemed dark and unhealthy to me" - Sakshi (name changed) © Youtube The only solution is to strengthen your mind through various other means to not let negative practices influence you on a psychological or a physiological level! Where Is The Reasoning? A certain amount of logic and reasoning is required to carry on the day to day activities and deal with problems from all spheres, but when it comes to believing in black magic, all reasoning takes back seat and uncertainty circles the spheres. Why do I say that? For the simple reason that black magic or any occult practice reaffirms the fact that if a professional can't solve the problem, these practices will. “The practitioners of black magic are at times more trusted than a doctor. They treat jaundice, dog, snake or scorpion bites with chants, instead of medicine.” says the very qualified Dr. Singh, who works in a government hospital. © Twitter One must remember that there have been advancements made in science that define logic to overpower any cushioned belief, that are assumed to set your problems free. Most of these practices are unlawful and if they aren't monitored how they're supposed to, they can go terribly wrong. Is Black Magic Illegal In India? Yes, the practice of black magic is illegal in India and there is an anti-superstition & black magic act and it goes by the name of 'Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013', where practicing such arts is termed illegal and one can go to jail for it. The bill is criticised for being anti-religion but people also debate about how it's the other side to religion, which does more harm than good. That's why these practices are done behind closed doors, and very few people are privy to these happenings, which do occur on a daily basis. © Youtube I don't know if black magic really exists or if it's done for the betterment or harm or if it's even a trusted ritual to bank all our hopes on. But all I know is that, good and evil do exist and so does light and dark, and the human ability to determine the difference between the two is fairly clear and recognisable. We may delve into dark arts to find answers that we can't seek otherwise or to propel our own growth but everything comes at a cost, and sometimes it's difficult to pay the cost of something that's clearly misunderstood or ineffable. © Youtube I am not saying don't understand what black magic is, but try and see the better side to it, so you never have to tread into the dark. That is why wise people always said 'there is always light at the end of the tunnel'.

  9. PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari, in harsh criticism of his party member and outgoing Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani, has said that Rabbani ignored Nawaz Sharif's constitutional violations in the past three years. Photo: Geo News QUETTA: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari, in harsh criticism of party member and outgoing Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani, has said that Rabbani ignored Nawaz Sharif's constitutional violations in the past three years. Speaking to the media in Quetta, where he was meeting the Balochistan Chief Minister Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo, Zardari said that he did not want to badmouth the party's Senate chairman but Rabbani had not addressed the PPP's reservations regarding the 18th amendment. "He [Rabbani] ignored Nawaz's violations of the Constitution," he said, "and this may be the reason why Nawaz is seemingly close to the incumbent Senate chairman." Responding to a question about creating an alliance with rival Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Zardari said that politics takes such tests and that the 'test has just begun.' Balochistan CM Bizenjo told the journalists that he has requested the PPP-co chairman to support a candidate from Balochistan as the new Senate chairman. Zardari responded by saying that the party will hold consultations regarding the matter but the final decision will be made by the party's Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal, commenting on Bizenjo's meetings with Imran Khan and Zardari, said that it was a good sign. "Imran has handed over his party's senators to Zardari through the Balochistan CM which makes the game very clear," Iqbal said.
  10. The purpose of a movie is not merely to entertain its audience. Sure, everyone loves a good adrenaline rush with a great action flick, we all like jiving to Bollywood masala movies, thrillers make for a great watch, but do you realise that movies are also a powerful tool to throw light on something is crying for attention? 'Kadvi Hawa' is one such movie that needs your dire attention. © Dhrishyam Films Starring Sanjay Mishra and Ranvir Shorey in lead roles, the movie talks about the bitter truth of climate change that is more than just being a 'first world problem'. It's the consequence of man's insatiable needs and desires for which our environment has been bearing the cost. The movie follows the tale of the villagers of Bundelkhand who are struggling with trivial environmental hazards including the absence of drinking water. While one side has no water, the other side is facing rising water level of the sea. The kids in the village think of monsoon as something that happened 'once upon a time'. The trailer is downright alarming! Directed by Nil Madhab Panda, this brilliantly made movie even got a special mention at the 64th National Awards. As the name of the movie suggests, 'Kadvi Hawa' is a bitter reflection of the reality and fate that awaits us. Climate change is a serious situation that is questioning the deafening silence of the people who still live in ignorance. Mishra's monologue is a powerful speech that will make you open your eyes and your mind and actually think.
  11. Social media has been fuming following the announcement of Pakistan Test squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. Fans took to Twitter to vent out their anger at the blatant omission, once again, of Fawad Alam, who failed to make it to the national squad despite consistent and impressive performance with the bat in domestic cricket. Here's how some of the cricket buffs reacted: Squad: Azhar Ali, Shan Masood, Sami Aslam, Babar Azam, Asad Shafiq, Haris Sohail, Sarfraz Ahmed (captain, wicketkeeper), Usman Salahuddin, Mohammad Amir, Hasan Ali, Yasir Shah, Mohammad Asghar, Mohammad Abbas, Bilal Asif, Mir Hamza and Wahab Riaz.
  12. Indian para-athlete Kanchanmala Pande, who is completely blind, was forced to beg in Berlin to take part in the Para-Swimming Championships. The Nagpur-based girl had to face extreme misery during her trip to Berlin because of alleged slip-ups by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI). © Facebook According to a report in India Today, Kanchanmala, along with five others participating in the Para Swimming Championships in the German capital from July 3-9, had an unforgettable time as the government money sanctioned for their tour did not reach them. In another case of government apathy, Pande had to beg and borrow money so that she could participate in the competition in Berlin. But the situation failed to deter the athletes' fierce determination. Despite all odds, Kanchanmala and Suyash Jadhav won silver medals and qualified for the World Championships. She said, “I never thought I would face such problems. I had to take a loan of Rs 5 lakh so that I could participate in the tournament….I had to qualify for the World Championships and I don't know why PCI didn't understand its importance.” Further while talking about her misery she added, “I was not given any official confirmation if I will receive a reimbursement for the expense I bore. I had to pay around Rs 70,000 for the hotel and more than Rs 40,000 for food.” She became the only female swimmer from India to qualify for the World Para Swimming Championships this year. Kanchanmala and her escort Jaimala Pande were part of the Berlin contingent that was granted sponsorship by the government. Ace Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra slammed the incident on Twitter and also sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Vijay Goel by tagging them in his post. This is UNACCEPTABLE. People must be held accountable. @VijayGoelBJP @narendramodi https://t.co/dBIrey8TYR — Abhinav Bindra (@Abhinav_Bindra) July 12, 2017 The swimmers were also asked to arrange their visas, which cost her an additional Rs 15000. To add to the misery, Kanchanmala, who won a bronze at the 2011 World Para Games, was shocked to see that the PCI had registered her in the 50m Backstroke event when she had actually applied for the 100m Backstroke. Goel was quick to reply back as he said, "I've instructed my Ministry to verify the facts of this epsiode and then comment on the matter."
