In the times of despair and negativity all around the world owing to the Coronavirus outbreak, John Abrahamâs poem Mera Bharat Mahaan is no less than a confidence booster and will fill your heart with positivity and hope. 2. In a career spanning across almost 4 decades now, Irrfan Khan has been a part of some of the finest films that India has ever produced. And in those films, we have seen how, time and again, the man has sort of redefined what Indian actors are actually capable of. Make no mistake, there is no one in Bollywood that can hold a candle to the manâs raw talent and the manner in which he has honed his craft over the years. © Instagram/irrfan Whether they are big-ticket films, with a spectacular star cast or a small indie film, where the legend of an actor is surrounded by relatively unknown names, Irrfan has gone on to cultivate an on-screen persona that is simply mesmerising. Youâre welcome Hollywood. Here are 6 indie films that show why we simply canât have enough of the man: 1. The Namesake © Fox Searchlight Pictures The Namesake is based on a novel by the same name, written by Jhumpa Lahiri. The film revolves around the struggles of an immigrant family that is trying to find its place in a post 9/11 America. The film beautifully depicts the tussle between appropriating new cultures and trying to hold on to oneâs heritage. And of course, there is Irrfanâs performance to go all gaga over. 2. Life in a... Metro © UTV Motion Pictures A film that is actually quite well made and well written, Life in a... Metro actually has a lot of things going on in its plot. With that being said, the entire film, which for some reason is listed as a musical, is very cohesively put together. Because of the nature of the storytelling, and the way it had to be filmed, Irrfan cannot be considered to be the lead of the film - in fact, there are no lead roles. However, the moments when he is on the screen, are simply a joy to watch. His dialogues, especially in spite of being very simple and mundane, are another reason to watch the film. 3. Slumdog Millionaire © Fox Star Studios Yes, Slumdog Millionaire is actually, an indie film. Although it had Danny Boyle at the helm, who was a fairly reputable director back then, the film had no solid backers. Although Dev Patel was the lead of the film, and Anil Kapoor, simply stole the show with his menacing performance, it was actually Irrfan, who in spite of a very limited role, added a very distinct, Irrfan-esque characteristic to the film. 4. Maqbool © Kaleidoscope Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. Of course, we have to talk about Maqbool. Even though the film had pretty strong and notable names associated with it, it failed to attract big-ticket production houses. Luckily, it did find some really great distributors who gave it the release that it deserved. Written and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, Maqbool is based on Shakespeareâs Macbeth and has power-packed performances by Tabu, Pankaj Kapur, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah and of course, Irrfan Khan. Need we say more? 5. The Song of Scorpions © Agora Films A film that somehow managed to slip under the radar, The Song of Scorpions is a film that only the most ardent of cinephiles, who regularly keep a track of film festivals around the globe, will know about. The film did exceptionally well in every film festival where it was shown; the foreign press, including some of the most credible film critics, were all praises for the film. Beautifully shot, the film shows the Thar desert and the city of Jaisalmer in a light that very few of us have seen. 6. The Lunchbox © UTV Motion Pictures Okay, we just had to include The Lunchbox in the list. The film was poignant, to say the least, and to this day, is considered to be the film that could have won us an Academy Award, had we entered this, rather than The Good Road. The Lunchbox was beautifully shot, had a very solidly written plot, and was a visual masterpiece to watch. And of course, how can we not mention the performances of Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui? This should sort your binge-watching list for the weekend, right? View the full article
  3. The tales of Indian soldiers and the brave souls who have served the country echo throughout the pages of our history. One of the most valiant, celebrated and decorated army officers this country saw was Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw aka Sam Manekshaw, who had a spectacular four-decade-long career in the Indian Army and his tales of valour and bravery gave him the name âSam Bahadurâ. He was born into a Parsi family and served as Indiaâs first Field Marshal. Known for his exceptional courage and wit, he fought five major wars. In fact, he is especially known for his heroics during the 1971 Indo-Pak War when he was the Chief of Army Staff. On his birth anniversary today, here are some lesser-known facts about the most badass Army General ever: 1. He was one of the âPioneersâIn October 1932, Sam became a part of the first batch of cadets for a military academy in India which was then recommended by Field Marshal Sir Philip Chetwood in a bid to train Indians for officer commissions in the army. Since it was the first batch, it was called âthe Pioneersâ. © Instagram/ Reclaiming Bharat 2. His role in winning the 1971 WarIn an exceptional career spanning across four decades, Manekshaw fought five major wars including World War II in 1942, the Indo-Pak partition war in 1947, Sino-Indian War in 1962, Indo-Pak War in 1965 and the 1971 war of Bangladesh Liberation. After becoming the Chief of Staff, Manekshaw motivated the Indian forces and devised a war strategy that forced Pakistan to surrender in 1971 to give birth to Bangladesh. © Instagram/Indian Defence Club 3. His role in making Of 90000 Pakistani Soldiers surrenderThe Indo-Pak 1971 war lasted less than a fortnight and saw more than 90000 Pakistani soldiers surrendering and becoming prisoners. It ended with the unconditional surrender of Pakistan's eastern half and resulted in the birth of Bangladesh as a new nation. After the war, Sam came to be known for his compassion towards the POWs and would have private conversations with them over a cup of tea. He also ensured that they were treated well and would arrange for their parcels from their families and a copy of the Quran. © facebook/indian army 4. He was known for his exceptional wit and sense of humourDuring World War II, while fighting around the Pagoda Hill, Manekshaw was hit by a burst of light machine gun fire and he was severely wounded in the stomach. He was rescued and taken to an Australian surgeon who operated upon him and took out a total of seven bullets from his lungs, liver and kidneys. Along with that, a big part of his intestines also had to be removed. However, initially the surgeon was not ready to treat him as the chances of survival were really low. When the surgeon asked him how he got injured, he said he was âkicked by a muleâ. The surgeon was really impressed by his wit and thereby agreed to operate upon him. âNothing happened, I was kicked by a donkey,â Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw said after being shot 9 times in the stomach during WW-2.He was brain behind Indiaâs victory over Pak in the 71 War.We remember one of Indiaâs greatest soldier on his birth anniversary. Tribute pic.twitter.com/dMRRG7DZYM â Soldierathon (@Soldierathon) April 3, 2020 5. He outsmarted Indira GandhiWhen he was questioned by Indira Gandhi about rumours of a planned coup by the army chief, Manekshaw replied in his sassy style, âYou mind your own business, Iâll mind mine. You kiss your own sweetheart, Iâll kiss mine. I donât interfere politically, as long as nobody interferes with me in the Army.â © rediff 6. He was Indiaâs first Field MarshalHe was Indiaâs first army officer who was promoted to being first Field marshal, which is the highest attainable rank in the Indian army. Even though he was set to retire in June 1972, his term was extended by six months to facilitate him with a promotion to the rank of a Field Marshal. Therefore, in recognition of his outstanding services to the Armed Forces and the nation, on January 1, 1973, he was promoted to a Field Marshal. © Facebook/AGDP 7. He humiliated Pakistani General Yahya KhanDuring Indiaâs independence in 1947, Sam Manekshaw and Yahya Khan, the future president of Pakistan served together in the British Army. At that time Manekshaw owned a red James motorcycle which Yahya Khan fancied. Yahya bought the motorcycle from Sam for Rs 1,000 and promised to send the amount from Pakistan. But the money was never returned. After 24 years in 1971, when India won the war against Pakistan, Manekshaw was heard saying, âYahya never paid me the Rs. 1000 for my motorbike, but now he has paid with half his country.â © Facebook The legends that surround him and the stories from his life continue to leave people in awe of his bravery and valour. 5. Indian dance crew V Unbeatables who previously rose to fame after appearing on Americaâs Got Talent wowed the audience again when they participated in the second season of Americaâs Got Talent: The Champions which had some of the best participants coming together to compete for a grand title. Their performance on âMarana Mass' left the judges and the audience speechless. It was loved immensely on social media as well. After a long wait of all the votes pouring in, the heavily emotional finale saw the dance crew beat the other participants Duo Transcend and win the grand title of being the champions. The audience roared in chorus as the place was filled with cheers for the well deserved win. Give it up for your new #AGTChampion winners, @v_unbeatable! pic.twitter.com/Ov4gkqnaEm â America's Got Talent (@AGT) February 18, 2020 Before the results were announced though, all the finalists performed for one last time on the show and while for their fans they were already the winner, V Unbeatables danced to a wonderful choreography routine on âTattad Tattadâ from Raam Leela . In case you are wondering, they look unbeatable but what does the V in their name stand for, then let us tell you itâs not victory , even though they seem to be destined for it. The âVâ in their name stands for a team member named Vikas , who met with an accident while performing a stunt for a show and sadly succumbed to the tragic fate. This is a beautiful tribute and is a reflection of how united the team is. Well, Indians are born to take the world by a storm and an Indian dance crew winning a talent hunt in America proves India has truly got the real championship-winning talent. View the full article
  6. Indian film stars and cricketers wearing insanely expensive watches isnât exactly anything new. Quirky Patek Phillipes, zany Audemars Piguets, Rolexes with cases made of gold - these have, somehow, become the norm for Bollywood if they want to be taken seriously by Indian horologists. © Instagram/hardikpandya93 Having said that, every once in a while, someone, wears something so exquisite, that we just have to take a step back and take a good hard look. This time around, it was Ranveer Singh, who wore a watch so rare and exclusive, that even the 1 per cent-ers in India couldnât buy one. © Instagram/ranveersingh Ranveer was recently spotted outside the Mumbai airport with Deepika Padukone, wearing a rather simplistic and basic outfit. However, with Ranveer being Ranveer, there was bound to be a quirky element with that as well. © Viral Bhayani The light washed denim jeans that Ranveerâs wearing has a belt of sorts thatâs incredibly long, much like the one that Aparshakti wore. The manner the belt hangs out in a quirky manner from the side is quintessentially Ranveer. © Viral Bhayani However, as we said, it was his watch that caught our eye. Given that Ranveer endorses Franck Muller, the Geneva-based watchmakers, seeing wearing a piece from them, shouldnât be that surprising. © Viral Bhayani But this time around, Ranveer was spotted wearing their one of their rarest timepieces. Ranveer is wearing the Franck Muller Vanguard Yachting Watch Number 64716. What makes this watch so exclusive and rare, is the fact that the case, apart from being made of white gold, is also covered in tiny diamonds. Even the numbers on the dial are covered in diamonds. © Viral Bhayani Speaking of the dial, it is again made of precious metal and has a glossy finish to it. The band of the watch is made using finely quilted leather, which gives it an exquisite appeal. As for the technical aspects, it is a classic piece from Franck Mullerâs Yachting series. With a fair number of complications, the watch is a highly coveted collectorâs piece and already has a cult status among ardent horologists. © TraxNYC The reason why we say that even Indiaâs top one per cent couldnât buy one even if they wanted to, is again because of rarity. Some experts say that the watch is worth somewhere in the ballpark of $300,000, which converts to about Rs 2.1 crores. © TraxNYC However, considering how rare the watch actually is, and how difficult it gradually becomes to get your hands on legacy pieces as time flies by, if you were to try and buy this piece today, you would have to shell out at least Rs 2.6 crores. Add to that your regular import duties and taxes, and youâre looking at a figure thatâs ridiculously high. Almost as if it would cost you the Earth, all your bodily fluids, kidneys, lungs, and then some more. If you find someone who is willing to sell you this piece, that is. © TraxNYC Seriously, this just goes on to show that Ranveerâs operating in a different reality altogether. View the full article
