  1. Benjamin Netanyahu holding what he said was a piece of the Iranian drone shot down by Israel. Photo: MSC MUNICH: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel would act against Iran, not just its allies in the Middle East, if needed, reiterating that Tehran was the world?s greatest threat. Holding a piece of what he said was an Iranian drone after its incursion into Israeli airspace earlier this month, Netanyahu told the Munich Security Conference: ?Israel will not allow the regime to put a noose of terror around our neck. We will act if necessary not just against Iran?s proxies but against Iran itself?. Addressing the Munich event for the first time, Netanyahu urged gathered US and European officials and diplomats to counter Iran immediately, displaying a map showing what he said was Iran?s growing presence in the Middle East. He said Iran was increasing its power as the US-led coalition against Daesh in Iraq and Syria regains territory from militants. ?The unfortunate thing is that as ISIS compresses and Iran moves in, it is trying to establish this continuous empire surrounding the Middle East from the south in Yemen but also trying to create a land bridge from Iran to Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Gaza,? Netanyahu said. ?This is a very dangerous development for our region.? Tensions surged on February 10 when anti-aircraft fire downed an Israeli warplane returning from a bombing raid on Iran-backed positions in Syria. That was the most serious confrontation yet between Israel and Iranian-backed forces based across the border.
  2. Defence Minister Khurram Dastagir ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khurram Dastagir, in response to US President Donald Trump?s tweet, has said that Pakistan is fully capable of defending its motherland. The jawans of Pakistan Armed Forces and civilians have given great sacrifices in the war against terrorism, he told a private news channel after Trump lashed out at Pakistan with threats to cut aid over "lies" about militancy. Commenting on the tweet, Dastagir said Pakistan had extended unprecedented cooperation to the United States for eliminating Al-Qaeda from its soil and Afghanistan, besides fighting the war against terrorism. Pakistan does not have any safe havens for terrorists, he said. The terrorists from Afghanistan have targeted our armed forces and civilians due to which Pakistan has had to suffer a lot, the Defence Minister said. He made it clear that Afghanistan's war would not be fought from the soil of Pakistan. To a question, he said that Pakistan had started fencing to secure its border. Replying to a query, he said it was Pakistan?s mistake to provide bases to the US. Dastagir said that Pakistan could gain nothing from the US. Pakistan has had to face huge economic losses due to fighting the war against terrorism, he added. Trump on Monday threatened to cut aid to Pakistan after accusing the country of giving nothing in return except for "lies and deceit". In a tweet on New Year?s Day, he claimed that the United States had foolishly given Pakistan over $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years. Trump also accused Pakistan of thinking US leaders to be fools. ?They give safe havens to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!? Trump?s ?no more? holds no importance: Khawaja Asif 'Already told US we will not do more, so Trump?s ?no more? does not hold any importance,' foreign minister says Trump?s tweet drew a strong reaction from Pakistan. Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said Pakistan has already refused to ?do more? for the United States. ?We have already told the US that we will not do more, so Trump?s ?no more? does not hold any importance,? Asif told Geo News. ?Pakistan is ready to publicly provide every detail of the US aid that it has received,? Asif added.
  3. Leader of Opposition in NA Khursheed Shah/ file photo ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah said on Wednesday that the arrest of former Sindh information minister Sharjeel Memon tarnished the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) itself. The veteran Pakistan Peoples Party member and opposition leader, while criticising the arrest, said that those who have non-bailable arrest warrants get bail within an hour. ?Memon was not charged by the NAB, he returned to the country to face courts, yet he was arrested in a shameful manner,? said Shah. Shah has also questioned why the arrest was carried out in that way and whether this was meant to be a message. He called on the NAB chairman to take notice of the way the arrest was carried out. The opposition leader added that in some institutions there was discrimination on the basis of Lahore and Larkana and it was essential to stop this way of thinking. Shah emphasised that history is a witness that parties were forced to change overnight, but the PPP was safe in this regard because it brought forward old party workers. Sharjeel Memon arrested by NAB in corruption case Memon, 12 others accused of Rs5.76 billion corruption in award of government advertising contracts He stressed that there are ups and downs in politics, but it is essential to ensure that democracy is not derailed. On October 24, an accountability court sent Memon, along with 11 other suspects, to jail till November 4 in a Rs5.7bn corruption case. On Monday, after being holed up for hours in the Sindh High Court following his bail dismissal in a corruption case. Memon was taken into custody by the NAB along with the other suspects. The former minister was escorted from the court premises by Rangers and NAB personnel and was surrounded by his lawyers and other supporters. As he was leaving the court, resistance was offered by his supporters leading to an exchange of hot words with NAB officials.
