  14. TOKYO: Cryptocurrencies fell Friday after Japan-based digital exchange Coincheck suspended client deposits and withdrawals for virtual currencies except for bitcoin, saying it had been hacked. Coincheck said it was investigating "unauthorised access" of the exchange that appeared to result in a loss worth half a billion US dollars of NEM, the 10th biggest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation. "At 3 am today, 523 million NEMs were sent from the NEM address of Coincheck. It's worth 58 billion yen based on the calculation at the rate when detected," said Coincheck's chief operating officer Yusuke Otsuka late Friday. "We're still examining how many of our customers are affected," he said, adding that the exchange was trying to find out whether the breach was from Japan or another country. After the exchange suspended deposits and withdrawals, NEM plunged more than 16 percent in a 24-hour period, according to CoinMarketCap.com. Major virtual currencies had rebounded slightly by late Friday but were still down, with Bitcoin dropping 2.13 percent to $10,987.70, ripple sliding more than six percent and ethereum flat. Coincheck said it had discovered the breach at 11.25 am and announced it had suspended trading for all cryptocurrencies apart from bitcoin in a series of tweets. According to its website, which proclaims it is "the leading bitcoin and cryptocurrency exchange in Asia", Tokyo-based Coincheck was founded in 2012 and had 71 employees as of July last year. In 2014 major Tokyo-based bitcoin exchange MtGox collapsed after admitting that 850,000 coins - worth around $480 million at the time - had disappeared from its vaults. Bitcoin is recognised as legal tender in Japan and nearly one-third of global bitcoin transactions in December were denominated in yen, according to specialist website jpbitcoin.com. The virtual currency is well down from record highs approaching $20,000 in late December, having rocketed 25-fold last year, before being hit by concerns about a bubble and worries about crackdowns on trading it. Billionaire investor George Soros, known for his legendarily successful currency trading, has dismissed bitcoin as a "typical bubble". But speaking Thursday at the Davos summit, he said the cryptocurrency would likely avoid a full crash because authoritarians would still use it to make secret investments abroad.

Photo: Cindrella Academy TOKYO: Move over AKB48: Japan has a new all-girl "idol" band -- the Virtual Currency Girls -- on a mission to educate the public about bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Each of the eight girls in the band, known in Japanese as "Kasotsuka Shojo", plays a character representing a virtual currency such as bitcoin, ethereum or ripple. Promotional material shows the performers wearing character masks, frilly mini-skirts and "maid" aprons complete with knee-high socks. The Virtual Currency Girls are due to hold their debut live concert in Tokyo on Friday, according to their management company Cinderella Academy. In keeping with the theme, payment for merchandise will be accepted only in virtual currencies. "We want to promote the idea through entertainment that virtual currencies are not just a tool for speculation but are a wonderful technology that will shape the future," said the group´s leader Rara Naruse, 18, in an online statement. In their debut song, "The Moon and Virtual Currencies and Me", they warn against fraudulent operators and urge people to make sure of their online security. The group is tapping into a rich seam in Japan, where bitcoin is recognised as legal tender. Nearly one-third of global bitcoin transactions in December were denominated in yen, according to specialised website jpbitcoin.com. The group´s launch comes on the heels of a recent market frenzy which boosted bitcoin up to nearly $20,000.
  16. Subaru had uncertified staff conducting vehicle inspections at a pair of factories for decades, media reports said Friday, as it became the latest Japanese firm hit by scandal. An internal investigation found the practice has been going on for around 30 years in an apparent misconduct crisis similar to the one at bigger rival Nissan, according to Kyodo News agency and other Japanese media, which cited a company insider and other unnamed sources. The reports dented Subaru shares, which fell more than 3.0 percent in early trading before ending the morning session at 1,996 yen ($17.50), down 1.93 percent. A Subaru spokesman in Tokyo declined to comment on the reports and said the carmaker is "still conducting an internal investigation" into the matter. A Subaru executive said some inspections at the two plants northwest of Tokyo were being performed by workers who were still being trained for the job and had not yet been certified, Kyodo said. "This practice has been carried out for more than 30 years," the executive was quoted as saying. Up to 300,000 vehicles could be affected, the Nikkei business daily said. Subaru trails far behind larger rivals Toyota, Nissan and Honda, selling about one million vehicles annually. The news comes after Nissan said earlier this month it would recall 1.21 million cars in its home market after it emerged that unqualified staff were performing final checks on vehicles before they were shipped to dealers and consumers. That admission came as major Japanese steelmaker Kobe Steel said it has systematically fabricated strength and quality data on some products shipped to hundreds of clients.
