  1. The 2019-2020 season was full of misery and agony for an NBA fan. First, we lost one of the greatest men to have ever run the league in David Stern on the first day of the new year, the league got disrupted because of the coronavirus outbreak, and of course, the legendary Kobe Bryant lost with life in a horrible helicopter crash along with his baby girl Gianna and seven other people. View this post on InstagramA post shared by (@nbadab_) The team Bryant had played religiously for 20 straight years, the Los Angeles Lakers had held a massive ceremony to bid their idol adieu. Some of the biggest names of the business including Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal gave some heartwarming speeches. However, Lakers fans knew that the farewell wasn’t complete unless they won the title this season. Jump to nine months later, the Lakers not only finished the regular season being the best team in the Western Conference, they are now the NBA Champions as well. View this post on InstagramA post shared by (@nbadab_) LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers dominated the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the NBA Finals to win the record-tying 17th title in the history of the franchise. James who won his fourth title in 17 years, also became the Most Valuable Player of the NBA Finals. One of the most loved yet highly criticised players of all time, LeBron James spoke directly to all those who don’t acknowledge his greatness when he said: “Coach (Frank) Vogel wants his respect, the organisation want their respect, Laker nation want their respect… I want my damn respect, too.” View this post on InstagramA post shared by (@nbadab_) People might say that this championship was the easiest for the Lakers, that the Bubble made it simpler, that the long break before the Playoffs gave them enough time to heal, but what about the losses they incurred that can't be returned? Yes, we’re talking about Kobe Bryant. He was the royalty of LA. He was the past, present and future of the city. He was supposed to live his life and love the people around him, especially this team. We wish he was here today. To see what his team had done. He'd be proud. He'd be the happiest person in the building. He'd be at peace, even if it meant cheering for his team from the sidelines. 2. Today, Kobe ‘Bean’ Bryant would have turned 42-years-old had he not lost his life in the unfortunate helicopter crash earlier this year. Retiring after having one of the most iconic careers in all of sports, the Los Angeles Lakers legend was supposed to spend happy days with his lovely wife and three daughters. He was supposed to make some more Oscar-worthy movies, travel all around the world and enjoy the spoils of his countless victories and train his girls to achieve greatness in whatever field they’d wish to choose. Kobe belonged to that rare category of people who’d dedicated their lives to perfecting any one skill. Anything else other than that and they simply did not have the time for it. On numerous occasions, Kobe spoke about how he wanted to become the best basketball player in the world and considering the kind of legacy he left behind, it would be an understatement to say that he is one of the greatest of all time. View this post on InstagramA post shared by (@nbadab_) Sure, he might not have the most number of championships in the history of the league, he didn’t win multiple ‘Most Valuable Player’ awards during the regular season and he wasn’t the most athletically gifted player to step on the wooden court. Even then, the greatest of ballers were afraid to go toe-to-toe with the Black Mamba. People who wanted to be truly welcomed to Kobe’s team, they had to prove their worth, it was only then that they were a true LA Lakers member. One of the greatest pieces of advice he’d ever given to his fans was “failure doesn’t exist”. Kobe believed that “failure” was just a figment of one’s imagination. If you are unable to achieve something on any given day, the story goes on. You learn something from that experience and use it to your advantage the next day and the day after that. His obsession with becoming the best version of himself forced him to do the kind of things nobody in their sane minds would do. Be it showing up for practice at 5 AM and leaving at 7 PM, or not going away from the court unless he’s made 400 shots, that is the ‘Mamba Mentality’. View this post on InstagramA post shared by (@vilas_nayak) It is maybe because of this reason that Kobe somehow managed to inspire millions of Indian basketball fans to keep practising and keep working on their craft of choice, without even visiting the country even once. That’s why when the horrible news of the Mamba’s demise reached India, we did everything to honour him and the story he told the world through his actions. From speed-painting to drawing murals on the court, from candlelight vigils to 24 seconds of silence, the Indian basketball community did everything in their power to let the man know that he was and will forever be loved. Happy birthday, Kobe. You are here with us in our hearts and in all the work we put in every single day while trying to be as great as you. View the full article
  3. One of the most prestigious franchises of the National Basketball Association, the Los Angeles Lakers organised The âCelebration of Lifeâ ceremony at the Staples Center stadium to pay homage to basketball legend Kobe Bryant, his baby girl, Gianna and seven other people who lost their lives in a horrible helicopter crash last month. It was one of those rare moments when people from all over the world, competitors from within the league, celebrities and common folk, came together and mourned the loss of one of the greatest men not just in the world of basketball, but outside of it as well. View this post on InstagramThe basketball world gathered to honor the Mamba and Mambacita.A post shared by (@bleacherreport) While Beyonce sang Bryantâs favourite songs, Alicia Keys performed Beethovanâs âMoonlight Sonata,â one of the most difficult piano routines ever, that Kobe learnt within a week to dedicate to his highschool sweetheart, wife and now widow, Vanessa Bryant. Vanessaâs message for her daughter and husband consisted of some of the fondest memories they had shared together as family and how they will continue to be a team as she has three other daughters to now take care of, while Kobe will look after Gianna in heaven. Nobody can foresee something like what took the lives of Kobe and Gianna, nobody can âprepareâ for it. From talk show host, Jimmy Kimmelâs initial speech to Shaquille OâNealâs short, simple and hilarious adieu to the âBlack Mambaâ, you could see that nothing was scripted and whatever these guys were speaking was straight from the heart and with a lot of emotion. However, when Michael Jordan was asked to make a speech, the whole stadium went silent. After years and years of sacrificing his body on the basketball court, an older, heavier Michael Jordan climbed the stage with a limp. With his eyes, already filled with tears, Jordan addressed the gathering. âNow heâs got me â Iâm going to have to look at another crying meme for the next â¦,â he said as the audience erupted in laughter. âI told my wife I wasnât going to do this,â Jordan continued, âbecause I didnât want to see that for the next three or four years. That is what Kobe Bryant does to me.â âHe wanted to be the best basketball player that he could be,â Jordan said. âAs I got to know him, I wanted to be the best big brother that I could be.â âIn the game of basketball, in life, as a parent, Kobe left nothing in the tank,â Jordan said. âHe left it all on the floor.â Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan were like two peas in a pod. The way the two played the game of basketball, the killer instincts they shared, the unbelievable work ethic they had, even the way the two stuck out their tongues while dunking on their opponents, were unbelivably similar. They were competitors for a very small period of time as Jordan was in the twilight of his career but nonetheless, their contests were a treat for viewers. Kobe adored Michael and Michael gave back the love equally. They would talk about the game, family, and everything else in the world there was to talk about. Jordan had transitioned from being an opponent to being an older brother. âWhen Kobe Bryant died, a piece of me died,â Jordan said, moments before walking off the stage and disappearing into the crowd. 14. Former basketball player Kobe Bryant attends the 90th Annual Academy Awards Governors Ball at the Hollywood & Highland Center on March 4, 2018, in Hollywood, California Retired basketball superstar Kobe Bryant -- once the toast of Los Angeles for the Lakers -- is now a Hollywood A-lister with an Oscar. Yes, you read that correctly. Nearly two years after leaving the NBA, the 39-year-old Bryant won the Academy Award for best animated short on Sunday for "Dear Basketball," a collaboration with artist Glen Keane and legendary composer John Williams. "Thank you, Academy, for this amazing honour. Thank you, John Williams, for a wonderful piece of music," Bryant said. In a sardonic reference to an attack by Fox News presenter Laura Ingraham against basketballers expressing their political opinions, he said he thought NBA stars were "really supposed to shut up and dribble." "I'm glad we do a little bit more than that," he added. Awards prediction website Gold Derby had Bryant as the odds-on favourite to win the Oscar for best animated short, but his triumph is unlikely to please everyone.
