Since the last decade or so, YouTube, apart from being a dynamic search engine for video content, has turned out to be a platform for actually earning a pretty decent livelihood. People like PewDiePie, Jake Paul, Carry Minati, and Bhuvan Bam have really gone on to make very successful careers out of it. © Youtube/CarryMinati Even if many YouTubers chose to move on or at least migrate from it, later on, YouTube certainly gave them that internet presence to try their luck elsewhere. In short, YouTube certainly has been a life-changer for millions! And the latest one to be added to that list is Isak Munda, a tribal youth from Babupali in the Sambalpur district of Odisha, who used to work as a daily wage laborer. © Youtube/Isak Munda As per reports, when there wasn't any work during the 2020 lockdown, Isak would often watch YouTube videos on his friend’s cellphone. It was then when he got Inspired by the YouTube bloggers and decided to make a self video and even went on to take a loan of Rs 3000 to record himself eating a full plate of boiled rice without enough curry. Hours after uploading the video, there were thousands of views and comments, and it did not stop there. There were many positive responses to his videos that led him to upload more on his YouTube channel, ‘Isak Munda Eating’, making him very popular within the span of a few months. Now, Isak is earning lakhs of rupees through his videos and no longer needs to look for labor work. “I had taken a loan of Rs 3,000 to buy my first little smartphone to make videos. My first video has been viewed by more than 4.99 lakh people. I make videos about life in my poor household and village, showing what and how we eat. I am happy my videos are received so well by many. I am making a decent income now,” said Isak. While the 35-year-old YouTuber's first video was titled, ‘Rice and Indian Sambar Fast Eating’, his subsequent videos focus on his community’s traditions and food preparation methods, and also feature his wife, Sabita Munda, and four daughters. “I’ve studied only up to the seventh standard. So, I thought I could make videos on my own community, culture, and lifestyle in my village. I also show how we collect wild mushrooms and eat bamboo shoots so that people in India and abroad get to know of the simple life we live,” said Isak. His wife explained how YouTube has also been a source of financial help from different people. “He once uploaded a video of the decrepit mud house we live in. Many people viewed it, and it brought us financial support from an organization in Bhubaneswar to build a brick-and-cement house,” said Sabita. Despite the success, however, Isak says that his ultimate goal is not just to make money, but to create awareness. “I want to create awareness among people about our local traditions and also the negative influences it is battling. I am happy to be no longer seeking daily-wage work as a laborer,” he said. View the full article

Nike and Adidas on Thursday joined various western brands that are under fire in Chinese social media for comments they’ve made on the Chinese region, Xinjiang. Home to a vast number of Muslim Uyghurs, Xinjiang has come under scrutiny for allegations of human rights abuse and forcing Muslim minorities into work camps. However, the Chinese government has denied these allegations and is calling for these companies to “correct wrong practices”. According to Global Times, Gao Feng, a Commerce Ministry spokesman, said, “The so-called existence of forced labor in the Xinjiang region is totally fictitious.” © Getty Images The heat towards foreign brands began with Swedish fashion company H&M, when the ruling party’s Youth League called attention to the company’s statement from March 2020, where it had said that it did not source products from Xinjiang and was concerned over the reports of forced labour. Besides H&M, Nike, and Adidas, brands like GAP, UNIQLO, Inditex, and New Balance have also made statements on Xinjiang, which go as far back as two years ago. © Shutterstock Chinese celebrities, actors, and idols are now dropping their contracts with these brands, including Wang Yibo, Eason Chan, among many others. Meanwhile, the shares for H&M, Adidas, and Inditex fell on Thursday as those of local Chinese companies such as Anta Sports Products and Li Ning Co’s surged. © SCMP Though H&M released a statement on Wednesday stating it respected its Chinese customers, it was nowhere to be found on Baidu Maps and Chinese e-commerce platforms by the next day. With the social media heat from China and the pressure from activists in the west, it’s unsure what the next step will be for these brands. View the full article
