Days after winning the rights to own the Ahmedabad franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the US-based private equity firm CVC Capital Partners has come under scanner after it emerged that it had invested heavily in betting and gambling companies. Taking to the micro-blogging site, the former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, who brought the IPL to life back in 2008, slammed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for awarding the rights to a firm that owns a “big betting company”. i guess betting companies can buy a @ipl team. must be a new rule. apparently one qualified bidder also owns a big betting company. what next - does @BCCI not do there homework. what can Anti corruption do in such a case ? #cricket — Lalit Kumar Modi (@LalitKModi) October 26, 2021 “I guess betting companies can buy a @ipl team. must be a new rule. apparently one qualified bidder also owns a big betting company. what next - does @BCCI not do their homework. what can Anti corruption do in such a case?” Modi tweeted. The CVC Capitals is a major player in international sport and has made huge investments all over the globe. The firm owned Formula 1 between 2006 and 2017. In August this year, it paid a staggering $3 billion to buy a 10 percent stake in Spanish top-flight football league La Liga, which is home to two of the biggest clubs in the world Real Madrid and Barcelona. © Twitter IPL The IPL has been marred by betting and match-fixing controversy in the past and this kind of negative coverage will only spoil its effort to restore its clean image. According to a report published in Outlook, the BCCI has already taken cognizance of the matter and have reached out to the private equity firm to find out if their association with the betting companies would lead to any conflict of interest issue later on. © Adani Group The same report also claimed that this development has put Adani Group on alert and they are already weighing their options and will be the front-runners to bag the rights if the CVC is shown the exit door. Submitting a bid of Rs 5,625 crore, the CVC outbid the local favourites Adani, who had placed a bid of Rs 5,100 crore. The highest bid was made by the Sanjiv Gokenka’s RPSG Group but they chose to own the Lucknow-based outfit, leaving Ahmedabad for the second-highest bidder. The RPSG Group, which previously owned the Rising Pune Supergiant, committed to pay Rs 7,090 crore over the next 10 years. © Reuters As this news made its way to the social media, the fans started praising the Adanis, who could make a backdoor entry, for playing smartly and bringing Shah Rukh Khan’s famous dialogue from Baazigar -- Haar Ke Jeetne Vale To Baazigar Kehte Hai-- to life. Some people even pointed out the BCCI’s hypocrisy (). One one hand, the Indian board has brought in several fantasy platforms on board as sponsors and is making money, on the other hand they are targeting the international firm for investing in betting companies. That is going to Adani the next highest bidder. Well played modi ji — Baked (@Baked34575207) October 26, 2021Khel gya Adani — Akshans¹⁷࿗ (@Rp17Akshans) October 26, 2021waah Modiji waah... Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan’s son Aryan Khan has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons after he was detained by the NCB in regards to possession of drugs at a rave party on a luxury cruise. The NCB has extended Aryan’s custody till 7th October. View this post on Instagram NCB Zonal Director Sameer Wankhede, who carried out the drug bust, spoke to ETimes about the case. When asked why the NCB sought further custody, Wankhede said, “We asked for custody of Aryan Khan because there’s still a lot more left to investigate in the case. A lot of new arrests have happened, where we have caught drug peddlers who used to supply illegal substances to parties. During these arrests, we’ve found links to the dark web and Bitcoin as well. We have recovered drugs in commercial quantities. The quantum of the case has become more serious, therefore we need to investigate further." View this post on Instagram Wankhede was also asked whether Aryan is directly involved in the drug cartel. On this, he said, “I cannot make any claims prematurely. I need to first investigate and once we conclude our investigations, we’ll be able to address these matters. That’s precisely why we requested the honourable court for custody and the court granted us four days' custody." There were many people on social media who have pointed out that NCB is deliberately doing all of this to target Shah Rukh Khan and Aryan. On this, Sameer said, “We are not targeting anyone at all. We have nothing against him. We have arrested more than 300 people in the last 10 months. Out of those, at the most, there would be about 4 to 5 known people. How can you say that we are targeting anyone? Most of those arrested in the last one year are hard-core, drug-related criminals.” View this post on Instagram A lot of people are defending Aryan’s case and saying that he was just a special invitee as a guest. Seeking bail on behalf of Aryan, advocate Satish Maneshinde argued in court, "Khan was a special invitee as a member of Bollywood. The party organizers have also been intercepted. They are all connected with each other." View this post on Instagram Apart from Aryan, the NCB has also detained Arbaaz Merchantt, Munmun Dhamecha, Nupur Sarika, Ismeet Singh, Mohak Jaswal, Vikrant Chhoker and Gomit Chopra. The two leading toothpaste brands Colgate and Patanjali have nothing in common, except the fact that both are household names in India. While Colgate has established its name in the market, its rival brand Patanjali has managed to create its own customer base. © iStock However, a recent report titled, ‘Toothpaste firm's numbers show India Inc profits won't survive costs, Covid’ published by Business Insider found that the numbers haven't looked good for Colgate-Palmolive Co in the past six years, which also happens to be the tenure of PM Modi’s government in India. “For the full year, the U.S. multinational’s India unit recorded a little over 7% jump in net sales, but since that came atop a 1.2% increase in the previous 12 months, the two-year average works out to less than 5%,” it said. © iStock The report subtly blames the Modi government and the competitor Patanjali for the plummeting sales of the Indian unit of the American brand. It says, “This is a company that only once expanded annual revenue by less than 13% in the nine years before 2015. But then came the challenge to its dominance from a yoga guru and his homegrown Ayurveda company, followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bizarre ban on 86% of cash in 2016, a banking crisis, a brutal economic slowdown, and finally two waves of Covid-19. Colgate hasn’t once managed double-digit growth in the last six years under Modi.” The report was shared on Twitter from Business Insider’s account and it promptly sparked a meme fest. The users cannot make sense of the fact that a toothpaste brand not being able to generate profits in the last six years could be PM Modi’s fault. © Instagram/Narendra Modi The author of the report cites demonetisation, crumbling economy and the pandemic situation witnessed under the tenure of PM Modi as the reasons for Colgate’s bad sales. He argues that Indian consumers would prefer spending less, pertaining to the financial crisis and would look for cheaper options like the homegrown brand Patanjali. While some users found it hilarious and mocked the report, others made memes about Patanjali being a game-changer in a few years.
