Or should we say a message from her grandmother's side? Dipali wrote that her grandmother, who turned 107 yesterday, has one birthday wish. AFP/NASA/Handout MIAMI: The Greenland ice sheet is likely to melt faster in the years to come, despite a recent slowdown, researchers said Wednesday after making a new discovery about the way glaciers move. Greenland contains enough ice to make the sea level mount 23 feet (seven meters) if it were to melt completely. The findings in the journal Science Advances show that ice in Greenland moves more quickly over sediment than hard rock. That means that as the world warms due to climate change, ice flow will likely speed up because the sediment beneath Greenland will become weaker, wetter, and more slippery. "Greenland's margin has many outlet glaciers that act as fast conveyor belts of ice. Thousands of surface lakes act as taps that deliver meltwater to the ice base, turning it into a slippery bathtub," said lead researcher Bernd Kulessa of the College of Science at Swansea University. "This discovery leaves us concerned because we have so far accepted the exact opposite ? that Greenland's icy conveyor would slow down." Researchers based their findings on seismic surveys that send acoustic waves through the ice to gain insights on the sediment underneath. A previous theory held that glacier melt would slow down at the end of the summer "because large networks of channels drain water away at the base, increasing frictional resistance to ice flow," said the report. But the seismic surveys showed that sediment played the key role in controlling ice sheet flow, and weakened sub glacial sediment "leads to accelerated ice flow". Ice is melting across the Arctic, as the polar region warms about twice as fast as the rest of the planet.

For some reason, issues like global warming and climate change are still a matter of debate. We prefer to not care about the larger issues when we’re busy trying to make short-term profits off everyone’s arses. And yes, there are elaborate summits and meets held around the world with agendas to control the climate change, reduce global warming… whatever that means. And yes, there are those who go about living their lives like they don’t care. Its one thing to live and let live; but, we’re not kidding anyone with our garb of saving the planet. © Penn State We boast about being organic, vegan and absolutely natural—we avoid the use of plastic, extra paper, non-renewable resources, harmful fuels, we avoid bursting firecrackers and say ‘no’ to fur. But, that’s just 1 to 2 per cent of the population that amounts to about 7 billion and counting. Sure, I’m being idealistic, utopian, stupid and naïve. Don’t listen to me. How about you watch, instead, these time lapse videos of glaciers, across various different regions of the world, melting? And I’m not talking about ever since the start of life on this planet. I’m actually, only talking about a duration of about 8 years. In 8 years, spanning across 2007 to 2015 this is how the state of glaciers has changed; how they’ve melted. Why it’s bothersome? I’ll start small. In case you haven’t noticed, the temperatures are rising with every revolution that the earth completes. The amount of toxic waste and gases being emitted into our atmosphere is increasing whether or not we choose to ignore it; the fact is not going away anytime soon, Hon. So, you can keep burning up your money on firecrackers trying to compete in the who can be the loudest and smokiest of ‘em all during Diwali; you can go on using synthetic material, plastic and paper for all your daily staples; after all, you’re life would not go on without these. You can go on to drive cars that sound manly because of the revving engine that emits that wicked nitrous oxide. And you can also go on to watch these glaciers melting over a span of just 8 simple years. It’s not changing the fact that global warming IS happening whether or not you choose to live your bubble and it’s clearly not affecting your life, in anyway, either since you go on to waste water and electricity like it’s available in surplus for everyone. Keep at it. We’ll just give you the slow applause that you don’t need a time lapse to speed up.
