  2. Summer is finally here and with summer comes heat, humidity and excessive sweating. The result? Your skin takes a beating. The harsh UV rays from the sun make your skin lose its natural lustre and make it tanned. The trapped sweat in your pores and beard makes your skin greasy, itchy and irritated, causing buildup that leads to problems like acne, dry skin and breakouts. But just because it's summer does not mean you should be stuck with ‘bad skin’ for months. All you need to do is alter your skincare routine to suit the warmer months. Summer Skincare For Men © iStock While women are more open to changing their skincare routine as per what the season demands, many men still choose to stick to the slapdash approach of just dabbing in some moisturizer and finishing it with sunscreen. But your skin needs more than just sunscreen in the summer months. In fact, men are more prone to breakouts and clogged pores since they have larger pores on their skin. But don’t sweat it, we have got you covered. Here are Vedaearth’s top 5 summer skincare products that will help you maintain a healthy glow this season. 1. Tea Tree Face & Hair Mist You can’t control the urge to wash your face every time you start sweating more in the summer. This practice saps the natural oil from your skin making it look dull, lifeless and dehydrated. Use a tea tree face mist to breathe life into your dull skin, keep it hydrated and treat active acne. Tea tree also has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that help calm redness and inflammation. The best part about this face mist is that it doubles up as a hair mist as well and will help keep the buildup of dead and flaky skin in check that often leads to dandruff. __ECOMPRODUCT__3144__ 2. Anti-Acne Face Pack Combo The trapped sweat in your skin pores leads to breakouts in summer. This Anti-Acne Face Pack and Facial Oil Combo will work as your daily essential therapy for glowing, flawless acne-free skin. Infused with the healing goodness of Juniper berry, Lemongrass, Neem, Turmeric and more, this specialized combo is a preventive to fight pimples, lighten scars and provide aftercare by reducing pigmentation. __ECOMPRODUCT__3145__ 3. Under Eye Oil with Lotus & Saffron Long sun exposure in summer worsens the puffiness around the eyes and makes the dark circles more obvious. Get rid of the stubborn dark circles and wrinkles around the eyes with this product. The under-eye oil comes with a roller that helps massage and stimulate the skin cells around the eyes and revives the sensitive skin. Aloe Vera Gel For Dry Skin, Scalp & HairAnother multipurpose hero skincare product that would be the perfect addition to men’s summer skincare routine is this all-natural Aloe Vera Gel For Dry Skin, Scalp & Hair. 10. All of us men want to ace that date with the woman we find attractive. In fact, we are even working out through the week to make sure that our biceps, no matter how they appear, are bulging out of our shirts so that we look as attractive as possible on date night. However, despite many preparations, some things can go overlooked and could very well be the difference between the date being an absolute success or a sad failure. So, to make sure that you give yourself the best possible shot, here are a few quick things you need to check 15 minutes before heading out on a date. 1. Use That Perfume Well © iStock It goes without saying that smelling good is a key factor in an attraction, and this is the main reason why you should keep this at the top of your priority list. Make sure you use that perfume, deodorant, aftershave, or attar in the right quantity before heading out, because trust me, she will want you to smell good 2. Brush Once, Rinse And Use A Mint-Based Mouth Freshener © iStock The worst thing on a date could be that you are trying to smile at her and she notices the palak ki sabzi from last night stuck between your teeth. In order for you to take care of that, just brush once more before heading out as a mandate and even use Listerine or a mint-based mouth freshener for her to know you take good care of your basic hygiene. 3. Make Sure Your Sneakers Or Boots Are Spotless © iStock As men, we might not notice everything that the girl might be wearing on the date, but trust me when I say this. She sure will. And if she sees your converse shoes or formal boots are dirty, it's not a great first impression. Not that you should cater to everything that a woman wants from you, but it sort of comes as a basic responsibility of you taking care of your own possessions. I mean, just look at it this way. If she thinks you can't even take care of this, how will she expect you to take care of her? 4. Apply Proper Lip Care © iStock Chapped lips never look nice. So, no matter the weather, ensure that you try applying a bit of lip care to make sure your lips look great when you head out on that date. Also, just in case you end up kissing after the date, it's always good to be completely prepared. 5. Make Sure Your Nails Are As Clean As Your Teeth © iStock Nothing is worse than picking up that sandwich on the date and she notices you have some dirt stuck in between your fingernails. I know we all work hard at the gym, and sometimes don't get the time to trim our nails when we should, but trust me. This goes a long way to ensure that she knows you are very particular about cleanliness. Also, there are other reasons for keeping your nails clean and if you're with someone in the future, she'll tell you that anyhow. 6. Trim That Beard Or Shave Again If You Like To Give Your Face All The Right Edges © iStock Okay! Important. We know that we shouldn't try to change a lot of things about ourselves just because of someone else. But in order to ensure that you do your best on the date, it is crucial that you take proper care of your facial hair. If you like to have a clean-shaven look, then make sure you shave before the date, or if you keep a beard, try trimming the edges to give yourself the edgiest look possible. Having sharp features is a good way to go about things. 7. Map Up A Fun Date Idea That You Can Pursue After The Date © iStock This is one thing that you need to mentally prepare yourself. Sometimes, planning for a date- What you're going to do, where you're going to eat, which movie you can watch, or which museum you can go to, could be the difference between having a fun date or a date to forget. So, open up Google on the fun things to do in your city, and make sure you take her to a place where you can dine as well as have a good experience together. It's okay to also be casual if you want to, but plans do have a higher chance of working well. View the full article
  11. You almost certainly have a toiletry bag with you. But do you have the greatest toiletry bag for men? How happy are you with the results of your kit? Although the pandemic has cancelled most of your travel plans, if you're the type of guy who has spent any part of this homebound year scouting the coolest locations, swankiest hotels, and possibly even taking advantage of some great suitcase sales, you'll want to invest in a high-quality toiletry kit. Sure, it's a place to keep your essential grooming, skincare, and hygiene goods, but it's also a mobile home for your entire grooming routine. © MelodySusie The most basic kit is simply a large interior pocket with closing, but there are various distinct versions that vary in shape, material, number of supplementary pockets, and other features. A high-quality kit should, at the very least, have lots of storage space (enough to fit several travel-size containers and long enough for grooming essentials like a toothbrush and a shaving kit). It should also be easy to clean (spills happen!) and water-resistant, with a good zipper and pass the “would I be ashamed if this was out on my counter” test. The following are a few of our favourite brands' toiletry bags and kits. We can ensure that at least one of them is the best men's toiletry bag for you after neatly packing them in suitcases or tossing them in the bottom of backpacks. Oh, and after you have your toiletry bag, make sure you pack it well. The Basic Bag:__ECOMPRODUCT__962__ These are the kits for you if you're more of a toss everything into a bucket and see where life takes me a type of guy. They have less internal organisation, which means you can possibly cram more of your numerous small stuff into them. And sometimes, it's all about the space. Bag With Some Bulk:__ECOMPRODUCT__2405__ Many people believe that unpacking your suitcase as soon as you get to your destination, regardless of how long you plan to remain, is the ultimate travel hack. This type of kit, which easily fit in your bathroom for quick access to all of your amenities, will assist you in doing so. Light It Up With Some Leather__ECOMPRODUCT__2406__ Leather is a durable material that will age gracefully in a kit's outer shell. Like a collection of passport stamps, you can preserve your hard-earned kit patina. However, because the inside of these leather travel packs is a little tougher to clean, you'll have to be more careful with spills. Some Canvas Goodness:__ECOMPRODUCT__2407__ A canvas bag is not only long-lasting but when you choose a colourful design, it adds a little quirk to your travel as well. This pouch can be your perfect companion to work as well as to all your journeys. It is spacious enough to hold all your toiletries in one place. Waterproof All The Way:__ECOMPRODUCT__2408__ While most toiletry bags are water-resistant in some of the other ways, if you are heading out on an outdoor adventure then opt for a full-on waterproof kit. This pouch can be your perfect companion to work as well as to all your journeys. Plus, the design is pretty dope! To Wrap UpThe best kits offer a least a little internal organization, hearty and durable exteriors, and at minimum, some internal waterproofing. So, when it comes to travelling with your precious grooming products, only choose a pouch that can handle it all with care. Explore More View the full article

  14. In over a decade of being a therapist, I've worked across generations and socio-economic divides. From millennials to senior citizens and common people to celebrities, I've engaged with human emotion in its many forms. This ring-side seat to India and her people has allowed me to watch many a social-cultural themes take shape. The most significant among them has been changing face of the Indian man, a solid indicator of our evolution as a society. I've noted, with great satisfaction, the heightened conversation around mental health for men and the improved gender ratio when it comes to therapy. As a mental health professional, I can testify that more men are now equating mental health with health itself and gradually embracing therapy, a change long overdue. More men are now vocal about matters related to mental health publicly and are proud to evangelize the 'mard ko dard hota hai' gospel. © Unsplash This is a significant move away from a generation of men that has been wired to suppress feelings, expected to maintain an armor of emotional hardness, and is led to believe that mental strength is their defining quality. A conditioning of this kind has kept men in isolation for decades, enabling patriarchy and toxicity within our cultural fabric. It has fostered socially constructed boxes in which men have tucked away conversations around their mental health. They've trained themselves to portray a steely resolve, afraid to experience emotions that could brand them as 'weak'. This social construct, often described as 'toxic masculinity', has in fact had a severe impact on men themselves. It has cut men off from the need for connection, empathy and emotional expression, the consequence of which has seen many men struggle to form healthy relationships of all kinds or to develop relational intelligence. This is a among the main reasons why men are less likely to ask for help when dealing with mental health issues. According to research, this kind of self imposed isolation leads to not just depression and but a host of mental health problems that go undetected and often lead to high suicidal ideation. It also prohibits the human need of vulnerability to come to par. I'm still called on by men that are firmly entrenched into the role of the 'alpha male'. Sadly, what they don’t realize is that they carry unprocessed trauma passed on from generation to generation. These are wounded boys posing as men, having internalized a problematic message that says it is not ok to cry and seek help. © Unsplash I listen to all their stories with compassion. Emerging from them is a narrative of pain, hurt, rejection and abuse, often harbored since their childhood. Most of their problems are disguised as symptoms but the root cause lies elsewhere. They've never really had compassionate role models in their fathers. They've never witnessed men who led their families with vulnerability and empathy. These stories have given me a deeper understanding of what these internalized toxic messages have done to a generation of men. As a therapist, my compassion for men has grown, professionally and personally, as I continue to learn about their worlds and how hard it is for them to live up to these arbitrary standards of hyper competitiveness, dominance, strength and sexual virility. 16. Have you ever borrowed your sister’s concealer to cover a zit? If you have then you already know how powerful and instant makeup products are. The good news is that makeup for men has come a long way. Today, you can use cosmetics specifically formulated for a guy’s skin because men, too, get acne just before a date. And the creases and dark circles because 'one more episode of Mirzapur at 3:00 a.m. after working all-day-long won’t kill anyone'. Makeup Products For Men © MensXP The biggest difference between makeup for men and women is that this one is designed to be invisible. Bring in the debate about masculinity if you like but in our opinion, makeup for men is just an option that you can pick or leave based on what fine-tunes your appearance. If you choose to enter the world of cosmetics, remember that they’re already being used by your favourite actors, they’re here to assist you in extending your personality and they’re super easy to use. Moisturiser/ PrimerLet’s begin by prepping your skin. A primer prepares your skin for every step that follows. It makes the application process smoother, controls oil production, hydrates the skin and allows your makeup to stick for longer. How To Apply Wash your skin using a mild face wash. Allow your skin to dry before applying the primer. If you don’t want to use a primer, go for moisturiser based on your skin type. __ECOMPRODUCT__317__ BB Cream For MenBB cream is a more convenient alternative to foundation. It’s lightweight. It’s part moisturiser and part makeup which is why it’s ideal for daily use. Blemish balm works wonders for acne-prone skin and people who want to give a little boost to their skin tone. How To Apply Find a BB cream shade that’s closest to your natural skin tone. Take a pea-sized amount of it and gently dab and blend it into your skin. __ECOMPRODUCT__286__ Concealer For MenSudden breakout? Dark circles too deep to hide during a board meeting? That’s where a concealer will help you. Concealer is thicker than foundation or BB cream which is why it hides and blends imperfections into the surrounding skin more efficiently. How To Apply Choose a concealer that’s one shade lighter than your natural skin tone. Apply concealer under the eyes and on other problem areas. Tap it with the blender sponge for even application until it disappears into your skin. Say hello to even-toned, glowing skin! __ECOMPRODUCT__881__ Brow GelMen’s eyebrows are fuller and hairier than women’s, which is why it’s wise to maintain them. Applying a brow gel, fix or definer will keep unruly arches in check. How To Apply Use an applicator to brush your eyebrows upwards in the direction of hair growth. Then, use a flat brush to apply the gel to your brows. If you can’t find a brow gel immediately, stick to clear hair gels (and use a mascara applicator to comb the brows). __ECOMPRODUCT__904__ Lip BalmChapped and thin-skinned lips are no man’s fantasy. But as the wind gets colder, your lips become more prone to damage which is why a lip balm is as important as any other skincare or makeup product. How To Apply The best way to get the blood flowing in winters is through gentle scrubbing. It will not only remove the layer of dead skin cells but will also make your lips look younger and sun-kissed. You can use a lip scrub for this or a blend of sugar and honey. And then, moisturise your lips using a balm. This will not add too much shine but will hydrate and maintain a naturally-red look. __ECOMPRODUCT__905__ The BottomlineIf you are a sucker for natural-looking makeup, consider upping your skincare game before you even start investing in makeup products. The better the complexion, the less makeup you’ll need to achieve the desired results. Explore More View the full article

It is my belief that the Indian fashion industry is currently at its peak, creatively speaking. The more informed designers are, the more they can evolve their imagination and that is exactly what Indian designers are working towards. Tell us something about that, what were their requirements, how was the fitting process? The experience was really something special and we are really impressed with the way the styles turned out. For the winter wonderland themed occasion in St. Moritz, Switzerland, we created a bespoke sea-green checked suit with a custom cashmere turtleneck. We also crafted a kurta with a specially designed embroidery pattern with Akash and Shloka's initials. That is probably the first time we had to innovate with personalized embroidery but we wanted it to be wearable art and it came together beautifully. I think that it can get overwhelming only if the client's vision is not matching with the vision of the designer but Akash is always on the same page so it is always a great experience when designing for him. View this post on Instagram Designers Sarah and Sandeep Gonsalves manifest the art of encapsulating a personalised embroidery pattern by using the initials of the groom Akash Ambani and the bride Shloka Mehta. It's an ode to their journey of crafting spectacular garments with the constant need of innovation and creativity. #SSHOMME #SarahandSandeep #AkashAmbani #ShlokaMehta #akustoletheshlo #ambaniwedding #MensFashion A post shared by SARAH & SANDEEP (@sshomme) on Mar 22, 2019 at 6:15am PDT We've often seen Ayushmann Khurrana in your creations. What is it that catches his eye? Is there anything specific that he asks for? It has been a pleasure having Ayushmann Khurrana wear our creations over the years. It is always a great experience working with his stylist extraordinaire, Isha Bhansali. The synergy is always perfect and her vision for our looks on Ayushmann is always on point. Most of the creations that are selected for him are unique well-tailored western styles that have unique colour variations and patterns. © Instagram/sshomme What direction do you see the Indian fashion industry taking? I expect the Indian fashion industry to move toward a more future-forward approach in the coming years. Designers are moving towards a more contemporary approach towards fashion design and they are looking to experiment with minimalistic, clean designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also extremely functional. What is that one current trend that we see today on the ramp, that has the potential of making it big among common, regular people in the future? Experimental cuts on hems are by far the best example of a mass trend that has originated from the ramp. © Instagram/sshomme What creative and commercial directions do you envision? Creatively, I like to keep working on improving my designs of both western and Indian styles. I would like to work towards imagining the most contemporary and clean ensembles that are not only functional but truly exhilarating to look at. I think Sarah & I have evolved drastically in the past few years and we will always attempt to create the most unique menswear styles possible. From a commercial perspective, we plan to expand our retail presence and turn the store into a one-stop destination for formal menswear solutions. Our goal has always been to provide the best possible quality of garments, shoes and accessories and we are devising new ways to make the in-store experience for our clients simply incredible. Just to give you an example, we have just recently invested in fragrancing the entire flagship store. © Instagram/sshomme Your creations tend to be very fluid and an amalgamation of classic silhouettes with contemporary and modern aesthetics. Where do you draw your inspiration from? I think we draw most of our inspiration from what we perceive as contemporary art and we add our touch of what may be a future-forward version of the same. Sometimes it may lead to us experimenting with the silhouettes whilst using pure Australian merino wool, and sometimes we may come up with a sherwani that displays the strategic use of beadwork. What is that one trend in men's fashion that you don't like, or don't agree with? I am not particularly a fan of over-accessorizing an ensemble just for the sake of it. I feel that menswear styles should be simple, clean and minimal. One should pick maybe one or two accessories that compliment the look fashionably instead of adding as many accessories as possible. © Instagram/sshomme How do you think the industry as a whole is dealing with this issue of sustainable and “eco-friendly” fashion? I feel that every successful fashion designer in India has considered going toward a sustainable direction by now. And that in itself is a great example of the power an informed consumer can have in shaping the future of designer retail. We at Sarah & Sandeep have also been working towards reducing our carbon footprint. For instance, our collaboration with Carlo Barbera comprised of business suits that were made using biodegradable Bemberg lining and instead of fusing, we turned towards only full or half-canvassed suits to reduce the use of polyester to a bare minimum. © Instagram/sshomme What are your views on the debate around Maximalism vis-a-vis Minimalism? I think Sarah & I have been promoting the concept of minimalism in fashion design since our brand's inception back in 2012. We do not argue against maximalism but we believe that minimal design is future-forward and as clients evolve, they care more about the quality of the fabric and less about the quantity of hand-work on it. © Filmfare In spite of its clear advantages and finesse, people tend to go for readymade suits over bespoke made and tailored suits. How do we change this? How can we make tailored suits more accessible for the masses? Traditional tailoring is not the way forward if you are looking to make tailored suits more accessible to the masses. In order to do so, we will have to rely on technology and some AI applications that have recently come out that considerably cut down the timeline for manufacturing a tailored suit. If the demand for instantly created tailored suits rises to a certain point, I can see the value in that business model. © Instagram/sshomme Tell us something about your creative process. My creative process is all about gathering information and using my imagination to depict what I can relate to. Sarah & I also tend to keep in mind trends and customer feedback, to ensure that the functionality of every garment is well thought of. Where do you think men's fashion in India is heading? Men's fashion in India is evolving spectacularly and with great promise. The category has seen a lot of growth in the past few years and we can see a bright future ahead. I see the growth shifting from workplace clothing to ceremonial clothing which would be great for Sarah & Sandeep because we are a designer label at the end of the day and most of our offerings are for special occasions. Our hope is that luxury menswear in India is driven by innovation and we expect to be at the forefront of that effort. © Instagram/sshomme Three words you'd use to describe your signature style. Clean, Contemporary, Geometric What is your favourite historical era in terms of menswear, and why? The 1960s was a great era of menswear to look back at because that is when experimental silhouettes came into play. Do you think traditional Indian menswear is evolving? Yes, of course. It will continue to evolve as men's tastes become more individualistic and personalized. © Instagram/sshomme One celebrity who can teach everyone else a lesson or two on how to pull off the Indian aesthetic elegantly, when it comes to menswear. Shahid Kapoor pulls off the Indian aesthetic beautifully. One thing men should never do while dressing up in traditional Indian wear. Overembellishment with accessories is not something I recommend to Sarah & Sandeep grooms. © Instagram/sshomme One traditional Indian menswear item you believe every Indian man should have in his wardrobe, and why. I think a classic bandhgala in a unique colour is an absolute necessity. It's the most versatile Indian style I can think of that can also be used for occasions that call for western wear. Men's fashion in India slipped through the cracks of the mainstream fashion scene and has stayed under the radar for far too long. 19. Ethnic menswear in India has evolved enormously and if there is one person who has pushed the envelope endlessly, it is Ujjawal Dubey, and his label, Antar-Agni. With creations that best exemplifies the copacetic co-existence of the traditional and the modern in this day and age, Antar-Agni has produced sartorial masterpieces that have been redefining Indian fashion on a global scale. © Ujjawal Dubey And yet, Ujjawal Dubey believes that the Indian fashion scene is still awaiting a major disruption. “We are evolving at a great pace,” says Ujjawal. “We have been trying our best to bring about that disruption, but we haven't had it yet. That being said, we will be pushing forward until we finally get it." © Ujjawal Dubey For someone who never wanted to be a fashion designer, and who for a better part of his career was uneasy with the idea of working with fabrics and textiles, Ujjawal has not just come a long way - he has made an indelible mark on the Indian fashion scene, and Indian menswear in particular, for epochs to come. © Antar - Agni Ujjawal sat down with MensXP for a chat and opened up about all things fashion, how his creations have found loyal customers in the likes of Ayushmann Khurrana, Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, among others, and how, Indian men, in general, are becoming more fashionable without them realising it. © Antar - Agni â As a fairly young member of the Indian Fashion industry, how would you say has the industry grown over the years? Fashion has definitely grown as an industry. Now we are getting more eyes, more attention and more acceptance than ever before. â From not wanting to be a designer to being one of the most established faces of the industry, how has your journey been thus far? The journey so far has been completely unexpected and very intriguing. The way our alternative aesthetic has been received is simply overwhelming. © Antar - Agni â Tell us something about Antar-Agni. How did you come up with the name? Antar - Agni means 'the fire within'. Its all about the human self and the expression of emotions, psyche, behaviour and experience. I chose this name as an ode to the years of complexities and ordeals I went through before I found myself and the drive I had. â What creative and commercial directions do you envision to take? We are trying to evolve at every moment. We have had our good and bad times but have managed to stick to the idea of re-inventing ourselves in a way where we can include more human interactions and loads of self-involvement through collaborations in art and commerce. © Antar - Agni â Your creations tend to be very fluid and an amalgamation of classic silhouettes with contemporary and modern aesthetics. Where do you draw your inspiration from? Throughout the years, I have made it a point to follow whatever my state of mind is. I'm a moody person. The fabric has been and remains to be our hero. Layers and drapes along with the graphic compositions that form a colour block while making the garments, helps us get closer to our mood. The key remains to connect with our audience as much as it possible to do so, from the tiniest detail of skin exposure to the neckline and to the way the layers fall on the body. We have always focused on making clothes that enhances one's personality. Wearability has been our rule and we have always worked around that and tried to interpret it in our clothing. © Antar - Agni â How do you think the industry as a whole is dealing with this issue of sustainable and “eco-friendly” fashion? Sustainability has become a fashionable word that is being overused without delving into its meaning. I feel sustainability is not a choice and definitely not something to brag about, it has to be innate. We as a brand would rather use 'conscious' as a part of our effort. We need to be conscious about everything that involves us, be it at the grassroots level at which we deal, to the amount of consumption, the use of resources, the treatment we have towards the people we are involved with, and to the little things around us at home our at work which makes our DNA. The fashion industry is the second most polluting industries in the world and it is important for us to analyse the reasons why. The number of products that go to the dump through big retail chains needs to be questioned. Terminologies like eco-fashion, green clothing, etc don't always mean what they say. The idea of producing large quantities in third world countries and then shipped across the globe increases the carbon footprint of a product manyfold. Most importantly, customer education is important. People should know what they are wearing and how that affects them and their surroundings. They need to be made aware of how to reuse and reengage their garments. © Ujjawal Dubey All of this being said, I do believe we have come too far, in today's economic and political situation. No product can be produced in a purely sustainable manner. â What are your views on the debate around Maximalism vis-a-vis Minimalism? Some times most maximalist things can have a minimalist appeal and aesthetic, and vice versa. Both have their own beauty and impact on art and fashion. Both of them can co-exist together and leave a similar impact. © Ujjawal Dubey â Where do you think men's fashion in India is heading? Men's fashion has been on the move and is constantly changing. The acceptance has gone up and the belief in sensible and smart clothing has made more impact than before. Androgyny and gender-fluid fashion are seen now more than ever before. This has been one of the major shifts in the menswear fashion in today's times. Also, we can see men coming out of the basic T-shirts and shirts pattern and moving more towards experimenting in terms of silhouettes and drapes, be it formal or casual wear. â Three words you'd use to describe your signature style. Non-conforming, maximalist yet minimalist, disruptive â One thing men should never do while dressing up in traditional Indian wear. There's no restriction as such because we don't see it this way of wrong or right. If the person can pull it off and is confident and comfortable then nothing else matters © Ujjawal Dubey â One traditional Indian menswear item you believe every Indian man should have in his wardrobe, and why. An unstitched dhoti, the one you can drape yourself because it's simply beautiful and never loses the charm. 20. Unapologetic and unconventional - these two words, as insufficient as they might be, best describe the genius that Manish Arora is. He is one of the few veterans of the Indian fashion industry who has been showcasing his sartorial creations in fashion weeks all over the world, for well over two decades now. © Manish Arora To get an idea of his prowess as a designer and more importantly as one of the luminaries of the global fashion scene, one needs to look at the accolades he has collected over the years. The most notable of these accolades will have to be the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur or the Knight of The Legion of Honour, the highest honour that the French bestow on any individual. © Manish Arora Known for trademark use of a pallet that consists of the colour pink and gold, Manish's creations are a perfect amalgamation of fantasy and contemporary realism, and often are often considered to be kitsch. We sat down with Manish for a candid chat over the Indian fashion scene, the state of men's fashion in India, and how, e-commmerce is changing the way designers think and create. As a veteran designer of the Indian Fashion industry, how would you say have we grown over the years? The Indian fashion industry is now a recognised trendsetter in the global market and has a name for itself. Indian textiles and craftsmanship is now applauded and recognised all around the world and is also being showcased on an international front. © Manish Arora There is now a demand for Indian designer wear as our contemporaries are now recognising the individuality that we offer to the global market. Going back to Indian roots, it's a proud feeling to see the recognition that India is getting. What direction do you see the industry taking? The Indian fashion industry is now an established one and we see it proudly growing in a positive direction. Globalisation has helped the world become an easily connected and more accessible place where fashion is no longer an alien concept. © Manish Arora Today the Indian consumer is a discerning one who is conscious about what he is wearing and what the garment is made of. He no longer blindly follows trends but is committed to making fashion work for him. How big of an impact has e-commerce or online shopping made on couture? It is often said that every action has an equal reaction and in the same way e-commerce has impacted the couture industry in an acceptable way. Ready to wear has obviously become more accessible much to the joy of patrons all over the world. Couture is classic and reserved for runways where the designers get to have the liberty of thought and expression. Translation of thoughts in a fashionable way, that's what couture encapsulates. © Instagram/manisharorafashion Tell us something about your collaboration with Koovs. This is our second collaboration. Based on the theme of 'Love' it has some of our classic archived pieces which we are sharing with KOOVS to spread it across the entire country. It is a 40 piece collection which includes some exciting accessories, like shoes, passport holders, bum bags beside clothing. © Manish Arora What is that one trend in men's fashion that you don't like, or don't agree with? A simple pair of blue jeans. They're too simple for my taste. © Instagram/manisharorafashion What are your views on the debate around Maximalism Vs Minimalism? Believing that all elements work in synergy, my style revolves around using elements to the best of their ability. I believe that nothing is ever too much, but there is always a way of looking at things. Appreciative of the more is less theory, bigger and brighter is always better and that's why my style is individualistic and is a medium for many to express their emotions via fashion. © Instagram/manisharorafashion Where do you think men's fashion in India is heading? It is changing a lot, in terms of fashion, men are getting more aware of what works for them and they have their own personal style. It is only going to become a bigger market in the next 5 years. Three words you'd use to describe your signature style. Bizarre, Whimsical, Kitsch. © Instagram/manisharorafashion Do you think traditional Indian menswear is evolving? 21. As a designer, Amit Aggarwal can be seen as a luminary who has been pushing the sartorial envelope by using rather unconventional materials. © Amit Aggarwal Imagine seeing a groom or groomsmen in a pret outfit made using recycled plastic, and industrial materials. A decade ago, something like this would have been considered blasphemous. Today, however, such creations have not only been normalised, it seems they are the need of the hour. We sit down with Amit for a candid conversation over men's couture, sustainable clothing and all things fashion. © Amit Aggarwal Q. As a veteran designer of the Indian Fashion industry, how would you say have we grown over the years? I think the entire community has grown to be more responsible and aware in terms of what it is creating. An increased number of unique voices has added to diversity within the industry and how Indian fashion is received world over. The new wave of designers is very exploratory and sincere in everything they are doing. © Amit Aggarwal There are definitely more names that are representing the country at international platforms. A label may not be at international fashion weeks but you will find them retailing at the most exclusive concept stores worldwide, that is the kind of presence the country has, where designers are known for their craftsmanship. We are not just a production hub anymore, we have stories to tell and the world is watching us. Q. What direction do you think the industry is taking? As a fashion community, we are much more experimental and vocal than we used to be. There is an active discussion on responsible fashion, which is so commendable. We may be a younger industry but the opportunities available within and outside the country are by no means behind our western counterparts. © Amit Aggarwal Q. What is that one current trend that we see today on the ramp, that has the potential of making it big among common, regular people in the future? I think power dressing is a trend that is dominating this season and really has that potential to become the norm. A structured suit is something that has so much impact but at the same time can be worn by just about anyone. Whether it's work or an outing, I feel garments with a certain sense of versatility are the way forward. Q. Tell us something about your label AM.IT, and your fascination with man-made textiles. AM.IT happened to satiate my urge to ensure natural and manmade textiles co-exist. As a brand, it envisions organic resources to comply with technological advancements. It shares a lot of nuances with our main couture line, and yet is designed for a different occasion I would say. © Amit Aggarwal Q. How big of an impact has e-commerce or online shopping made in high fashion? The fact that one can browse a collection online with full details regarding its fabric, price, fit etc. has definitely enticed a community of online shoppers. An internet query may translate into a store visit but it is something that gives many people a reason to indulge with brands. Although I believe that any kind of clothing should be bought in person, I'm quite encouraging towards all online shoppers around me. © Amit Aggarwal Q. What is that one trend in men's fashion that you don't like, or don't agree with? The one trend that I do not agree with, is that of men playing too safe when it comes to how to dress. Fashion to me, is the biggest way to express myself, so I particularly appreciate it when men are experimental and want to push the envelope with their dressing. Q. How do you think the industry as a whole is in dealing with this issue of sustainable and “eco-friendly” fashion? Even if sustainable fashion has become a fad these days, I'm glad more brands are pushing for a common cause. There is not one but multiple blueprints around which designers are practising sustainability. I think the conversation has moved forward from utilising waste or handloom. All this effort has impacted people to be more mindful of their buying habits, the choices and the little changes they make in their personal lives. © Amit Aggarwal Q. What are your views on the debate around Maximalism vis-a-vis Minimalism? Our history is full of maximalism in arts & crafts. As a culture, we are the epitome of extravagance and there is no way we can deny it. It is bound to repeat itself like any other creative movement. A creator has a choice to utilise a concept in their work. As for minimalism, it is an aftereffect of maximalism, derived from the stress, expense and near-religious commitment of overindulgence. In my work, I try to explore all of these concepts with an active awareness of how it will affect society and ecology at large. © Amit Aggarwal Q. Tell us something about your creative process. How do you come up with themes, motifs and images for your creations? Materials and surfaces are an important aspect of my creative process. Each season is dedicated to a selection of materials that are explored in every way possible in accordance with a set of visual components that help give shape to the mood of the collection. It is a non-linear process where ideas can emerge from my recent travels, books that I happen to read, movies or even what I am going through in my personal life. I tend to get inspired by nature so that becomes a recurring element in most of our collections. © MensXP Q. Where do you think men's fashion in India is heading? I think we are at a place where various factors have enabled men to experiment with their looks without any inhibitions regarding how they are required to dress. Many designers are creating one-off collections that are primarily for men. This relationship is crucial for the men's fashion scene to thrive in any community and we are more than excited to explore this when we did. Through the years, we received continuous feedback from our clients that it was high time we designed something for men. So, our decision to create menswear was really the growing interest from customers who wanted something curated for them. Creating a collection for men is not the same as it is for women, for obvious reasons. But we are loving it so far! I look forward to men sporting the most daring and extravagant of silhouettes and colours. © Amit Aggarwal Q. Three words you'd use to describe your signature style. Experimental. Eloquent. Exploratory Q. What is your favourite historical era in terms of menswear, and why? Egyptian men were the first to adopt clothing as an expression or a sense of style. Until then the purpose of clothing was merely functional. © Amit Aggarwal Q. Do you think traditional Indian menswear is evolving? What is traditional will remain so. Yes, menswear is evolving. As designers, we try and create a contemporary outlook, building upon tradition as inspiration. Q. One celebrity who can teach everyone else a lesson or two on how to pull off the Indian aesthetic elegantly, when it comes to menswear. Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. I think they sport a traditional look exceptionally well. Q. One thing men should never do while dressing up in traditional Indian wear. Never say never! Men can always own what they wear, I would personally say experiment as much and have fun with your clothing. © Amit Aggarwal Q. One traditional Indian menswear item you believe every Indian man should have in his wardrobe, and why. A well-tailored suit, in a neutral colour. I think it's a great way to build a traditional or formal look. Men's fashion in India slipped through the cracks of the mainstream fashion scene and has stayed under the radar for far too long. 22. They say a true man is shaped not only by his success, or his wealth but also by the goodness that's in his heart. It's not determined by his possessions but only if he shares them with the world for the betterment of mankind. Hollywood, for one, is blessed with philanthropists who have gone the extra mile to give back to the society to be remembered for their goodness. Here are five Hollywood icons who continue their efforts of making the world a better place, one good thing at a time: George Clooney George Clooney is well known for his engagement to stop the human rights atrocities in the Darfur region of Sudan. Clooney founded the Not On Our Watch with his 'Ocean's 11' co-stars Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, and Brad Pitt, and producer Jerry Weintraub, which works to uplift the suffering populations of Sudan. His charity has donated millions of dollars to help those suffering in the region. Clooney was named the United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2008, to help raise public awareness, and support for the U.N's peacekeeping efforts around the world. Hugh Jackman The Wolverine star started The Laughing Man Foundation, which through its chain of coffee shops, supports coffee farming communities across the world by investing in programs that focus on health, growth, and success for coffee farmers and their families. Started after a promise made by the star to his friend, an Ethiopian coffee farmer, Dukale and his family, the Foundation works for supporting the production of sustainable coffee and communities associated with it. Leonardo DiCaprio Since 1998 The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has been working to protect threatened ecosystems with a focus on Wildlands Conservation, Oceans Conservation and Climate Change. With over 50 million followers, the star's impactful work was recognized when he was designated as the United Nations Messenger of Peace for Climate Change and received the 2014 Clinton Global Citizen Award. Following the notion of great deeds, here's a striking video by Seagram's 100 Pipers Music CDs, that reminds us that the greatest legacy one can leave behind, is an act of goodness – an act that makes the world a better place. Matt Damon Actor-producer-screenwriter, Matt Damon started H2O Africa in an attempt to mitigate the water crisis in Africa and gather support for clean water programs in critical areas. His organization merged later with Water.org that focuses on providing clean water to underprivileged across the world. He is also an ambassador for ONEXONE, a non-profit foundation committed to supporting, preserving and improving the lives of children. Will Smith The MIB star with his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, founded the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation to benefit inner-city community development, youth educational projects and underprivileged children and their families. He has also supported several charitable organizations that work in South Africa. Heartwarming, isn't it?
  23. Photo: File PARIS: Women are statistically far more likely to donate a kidney to a partner than receive one, according to a study released Thursday to coincide with World Kidney Day and International Women?s Day. Based on European data assessed, 36% of women donate a kidney to their husband in clinically suitable cases. That compares with just seven percent of clinically suitable men donating a kidney to their spouse, said the study by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations. It highlights how women are also liable to suffer from the most serious stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) as they tend to live longer than male sufferers and take longer to reach a stage requiring a transplant. ?Although it is hard to pinpoint a specific reason for higher numbers of wives being donors than husbands, the evidence suggests women are motivated by reasons such as altruism and the desire to help their family continue to survive,? said Adeera Levin, a Professor of Medicine at Canada?s University of British Colombia. The study data shows some two thirds of kidney transplant recipients are men although the gender difference was less pronounced for donations by deceased men and women. Worldwide, the study found 14% of women suffer from CKD compared with 12% of men. Although the data showed higher proportions of women live with advanced CKD, ?experts believe that systemic failures to detect or manage CKD in women leave women at a higher risk of progression and complications?. This year?s World Kidney Day is closely focusing on CKD sufferers who are either pregnant or wishing to conceive. ?In women who have had a successful kidney transplant, fertility can be at least partly restored and chances of successful birth increase,? said Dr Giorgina Piccoli of Italy?s University of Torino and the Centre Hospitalier Le Mans, France. ?However, complications in these women remain more common than in the general population, and preconception medical counselling should always be sought,? added Piccoli. She stressed the ?clear need for higher awareness of CKD in pregnancy, to timely identify CKD in pregnancy, and to follow-up women with CKD during and after pregnancy?. Dr Piccoli also indicated pregnancy-related complications can increase the risk of kidney disease. ?Women face unique issues in relation to kidney disease and donation, and since this year?s World Kidney Day coincides with International Women?s Day, we decided now was the time to highlight these issues,? said Professor Levin.
  24. Suicide, homicide, sexual assaults and war accounted for 208,179 deaths in 2015 in the Eastern Mediterranean region MIAMI: Suicide and murder are rising fast in the Middle East and nearby regions that are already grappling with war and conflict, creating a "lost generation," particularly among men, researchers said Monday. Suicide, homicide, sexual assaults and war accounted for 208,179 deaths in 2015 in the Eastern Mediterranean region, said a spokesman for the University of Washington, which issued a series of 15 reports published in the International Journal of Public Health. War took some 144,000 of those lives in a part of the world that is home to 600 million people and includes 22 nations such as Afghanistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and the United Arab Emirates. The rise in suicides and interpersonal violence in the Eastern Mediterranean has far outpaced the rest of the world over the past quarter century, said one of the findings. In 2015, nearly 30,000 people in the region committed suicide that year, and another 35,000 died from interpersonal violence, "representing increases of 100 percent and 152 percent, respectively, over the past 25 years," it said. Taliban, Daesh jointly massacred 50 civilians: Afghan officials The fighters killed more than 50 men, women and children in the remote Sayad district of northern Sar-e Pul province on Saturday "In other parts of the world during the same period, the number of deaths from suicide increased 19 percent and interpersonal violence by 12 percent." Researchers also found a "sharp increase" in mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia in the Eastern Mediterranean. "Intractable and endemic violence is creating a lost generation of children and young adults," said lead author Ali Mokdad, director for Middle Eastern Initiatives at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington. "The future of the Middle East is grim unless we can find a way to bring stability to the region." Meanwhile, experts such as counselors, psychiatrists and psychologists are in severe shortage. Countries such as Libya, Sudan and Yemen have just 0.5 psychiatrists per 100,000 people, said the report. In comparison, among European nations the ratio ranges from nine per 100,000 to more than 40. Researchers also found a 10-fold increase in deaths related to HIV/AIDS between 1990 and 2015. Most of the cases of death from HIV/AIDS occurred in Djibouti, Somalia, and Sudan. "In this region, individuals infected with HIV are dying faster than the rest of the world," said assistant professor at IHME, Charbel El Bcheraoui. "This is a sign that HIV patients are not receiving proper treatment in an era where HIV can be well controlled with the appropriate treatment regimens." The data comes from the most recent estimates from the annual Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors study (GBD). The GBD is put together by more than 2,300 collaborators in 132 countries, and looks at health loss from all major diseases, injuries, and risk factors by age, ***, and population.
